As many previous comments said, this is the most complete video on RUclips about how good the 18-55mm is for macro photography ! This should be recommended to anyone who wants to get started with macro before buying an expensive lens.
Thank you so much! I need to say though that this video is mostly about magnification. It does show that the sharpness isn’t on par with other solutions and that you lose light with some tools. Plus: no doubt a dedicated lens is more convenient. But: it definitely can be done and not everyone wants to spend money on a dedicated macro lens.
Hey ! Just wanted to add something, you can keep your aperture control while reverse mounting your lens, you just need to get an adapter like the meike mk-c-up reverse mount adapter which basically passes the information from your camera to your lens through a cable, it also protects your contacts and you can add a clear filter at the very tip of your set up to protect the inside of the lens from dust.
I own one of these. Mine is a very cheap plastic thing from Aputure, and I have to say I don't like it for the very simple reason that it sticks out from the back of the reversed lens and limits how close I can get. It's possible to mount a ring flash to it, but at high magnification the flashlight won't reach the subject, because the flash sticks out beyond the subject. So I prefer the work-around.
Best video about shooting macro and/or the different macro tools I've ever seen, by far. I have an 85mm 1:2 lens and some extension tubes but never really bothered to truly figure out how to get good shots. I'm super motivated now!

The Laowa shot is also by far my favorite (and I'm hardly influenced by having picked up the same lens on a different mount). There are two additional options for setting the aperture - one is a quite expensive connector from Novoflex, the other is using an older lens with a manual macro ring on it.
For my Nikon I bought the Fotodiox reverse ring aperture control so I can easily control the aperture on the fly as well as a reverse ring and reverse ring camera mount so I can use two lenses with one properly attached to the camera while the other is fitted in reverse to the end of the lens. This gives some electronic light metering and focus to the rig. Works great for me. I also have had no problem with focus stacking in Photoshop. Great video ... Cheers
Excellent video, and yes reversing was my choice when i started macro , Now I am experimenting with microscope objectives which is really more microscopy than macro. At around 24X I started seeing individual cells on a lattice leaf but focus and lighting are extremely difficult.

By far, the greatest explanation for macro photo, a lot of technical data... You became very fast my favourite youtube photo teacher! Thanks so much for all!!
Thanks for the comparisons and all of the information! Using just a 90mm macro lens and my Sony A7iv it sometimes seems that I get better looking images if I back up just a little for more depth of field and then crop the image afterwards for composition and to make the subject a little larger in the frame instead of getting as close as absolutely possible. Focus stacking takes care of this also but it's nice to get some great looking shots out in the field without having to go through that.
Hi and thanks for your feedback. That's totally valid and basically using your full frame camera like a crop sensor camera - that would create a larger depth of focus despite some people saying that's not correct (while it clearly is). If you want to up your game in regard to depth of focus, consider a flash and a diffuser. I've tested that in one of my other videos and it makes macro photography much easier.

Thanks for the work-around! I knew a different version of it, where you set the desired aperture and then press and hold the depth of field preview button while taking the lens off the camera. But that is extremely fiddly! I didn't know you can use live view instead - obviously much easier!
Thanks for your feedback. You’re probably like me from the pre-live-view-era 😁. Back then only higher end cameras had that button. Now luckily everyone can do it.

Thanks so much, Darwis. Theoretically it only depends on the front diameter of the lens. But the problem is, that with a wide angle you will see massive vignetting.
@@wolfamri Thanks for the answer, I see that's gonna be a big problem, I think I will stick with extension tubes. btw I have confused, example if we add 15mm extension tube on a 35mm f/1.2 lens , will it affect the focal length and aperture value?
That's really hard to say. Most convenient to use is a dedicated macro lens with a raynox. But the really high magnifications can't be achieved with such a combo. That requires an additional step, like the reverse mount or the extension tubes. Both will eat quite a bit of light and will require focus stacking for decent results. So when you say zooming out, your intention is to have one shot extremely close, and a second (or more in between) that show the complete subject. Wolf Thank you so much for this! This is incredibly dedicated and informative! You take all the guess work out for us and you’re an invaluable teacher to all of us! Proud to know you!!
Glad it was helpful! As a short tip: what brought the fun and the quality (well, at least I think it's quality 🤣) into my macros was a flash and a diffusor. They don't cost an arm and a leg, but make things easier and so much better looking.
Saw the thumbnail and had to click! I took a photo of this type of spider the other day. Only have extension tubes atm but going to try adding the Raynox this weekend.
I’m really glad I stayed until the end! The image stacking turned out quite spectacular. Will definitely be attempting this at some point with other subject matters. Thank you! The last one is nicer overall though.
@@wolfamri It definitely looked like a fun subject to be taking photos of. Personally I never had macro photography peak my interest. My auto accident from three years ago is forcing me to buy new equipment. The car started on fire with all of my gear in the backseat! I held off for so many years just using a cell phone, which is nice for traveling light. I have several collectible coins stored away just waiting to be photographed… An example would be “The divine comedy Paradiso 5 Oz coin” I would like to get some macro shots but haven’t decided how I’ll set it up. I’m not sure if you use Instagram but my thought is to post the photo in sections. When you go to my profile you would see 1 photo taking up 9 tiles. Then I would post a photo with the coin by itself including the reverse. If you catch my drift anyways…Might be something to make a video on if you haven’t already. Take care
Wow, I just googled that coin. That looks fantastic. But with that size it wouldn’t require extreme macro. For instagram you can easily crop. Most important will be the lighting 😉.
@@wolfamri lighting is definitely key, I need a more controlled environment before I mess with it. I’m going to be extremely careful taking photos. Then I will ship it to NGC and have it graded/encapsulated. Makes it easier to sell and it will be better protected. Just won’t have the option to take it outside the capsule after I go that route.
This is amazing. I'd tried a reverse mount with some old glass but was using the 50mm. I"m going to have to try to go back now and use the 28mm w/rings to see if that's any better. Excellent video in every single way. Headed to the diffuser video now!
Glad it was helpful, Nik! Thank you for your feedback! A small tip: the biggest jump in macro photography is probably using a speedlight with a diffusor. That will lift your photography by a few levels. In case you don't know what that is, here is a video: ruclips.net/video/bDC1aqNSOgQ/видео.html Enjoy macro, and plant some mint or lavender to attract lots of insects.

Stumbled randomly upon this video and it turned out as such a treat! Awesome job! Makes me wanna experiment with macro again after many years.
So great to hear that. Enjoy macro, it is so amazing😉.
I would feel sorry if I didn't type thank you in the comments column, this is a very enlightening video for me. Thank you brothers
Awwwww! Thank you, that means a lot. Enjoy macro photography, it's so awesome!
Not even halfway through the video.. Subscribed! Just superb teaching style. So hard to find people with these skills. Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!
Awwww, thank you, Michael. Means a lot!
Wish more RUclips content around photography were this useful. Learned so much, thank you!
Thank you, James 🙏🙏
Best video ever about macro photography. All questions answered.
Awww, thanks so much, Ugur 🙏🙏
the image at 6:18 is so powerful with that sense of scale. even though it wasnt part of this experiment, that is my favorite image. bravo
Thank you, Noah 🤗🤗
I was looking at set up and cameras just barely getting into macro photography and man, this video helped me a lot!! Thank you
So great to hear that, thank you for your feedback 🙏🤗
@@wolfamri you’re welcome! And also can you please link the tokina 11-16 mm for canon? I am going to be ordering them soon and I don’t want to get anything wrong. Please and thank you in advance!!
With please. But the t7i seems a bit overpriced at the moment. What is your budget and what would you mainly like to photograph?
@@wolfamri I believe the 800D t7i is around 1000+ which is already in my add to cart. My budget is around 2k-2.5k. My goal is to make extremely close photograph then zooming out. I think the set up you have mentioned here is my go to.
So when you say zooming out, your intention is to have one shot extremely close, and a second (or more in between) that show the complete subject. I don't think the 11-16mm will give you that flexibility. Sorry for asking so many questions, but I don't want to give you a wrong recommendation. What exactly do you have in mind? If it is confidential, you can contact me in a different way. I swear I dont't have enough time to copy your idea 🤣.
First video of that kind that I enjoyed watching from first second to last. Bravo!
Thank you so much 🤗🤗
My favorite setup now is my 50mm ans extension tube. But the 100mm will definitely be in my shopping list, thanks for all the data !
Thank you for your feedback 😉. A dedicated macro lens is a bit easier to work with than extension tubes tbh.
Best of macro videos, cheers to you sir!
Thank youuuu 🙏🤗🙏
Very well explained !!! Great job !!!
Thank you, Michael! 🤗
Perfect review. Clear, informative, funny, and efficient. I can't wait for my next trials.
I have a reverse adapter, a Raynox lens, a camera and some lenses to try. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your continued support🙏🙏. Macro is just super fun. Enjoy your tools and if you don't mind, let me know which option you like most 😉.
Best macro comparison ever. Quality content, Sir
Awww, thanks so much! That means a lot!
Bro insane video, I knew nothing about macro and I'm now an expert
Thank you 🙏🙏
The final image is just super sick! Great job, that was 14 minutes of excitement!
Thanks, Jens. Ready for the macro challenge? I think I can go beyond that 🤣
@@wolfamri beyond 11:1? oh shit.... I need to buy stuf...:D
😂😂 I‘m sure if anyone can do it, it’s you 😁
Amazing video answered lots of my questions on macro photography and a very enjoyable watch- many thanks
Thank you, Mark 🙏
Thank you so much for this class!
Thanks for watching 😉
Exactly what i needed ! Thanks :)
Great to hear that. Enjoy macro 😉.
Wow man, this is fantastic. Instant sub, I haven’t even seen your other videos (yet), but this one was so good. I’m kinda upset that I haven’t found this earlier! Thanks for the super good content.
Thank you so much, Michael 🙏🙏🙏
Great work! I really enjoyed and learned a lot.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for your feedback!
I've started watching your video very recently and after watching your precious videos, I found that there are so many teeny tiny things that I ignored while taking photos. thank you very much indeed for making me a better photographer. 👍🙏
awwww, thanks so much for your feedback. I really appreciate that!
WOW, this was very useful thank you. I am just on my journey into MACRO and have ordered reverse rings and extension tubes. Looks like I am going to have some fun.
Ohhh yes, you will, Chris! Enjoy the fun!!!
Wolf
Thank you so much for this! This is incredibly dedicated and informative! You take all the guess work out for us and you’re an invaluable teacher to all of us! Proud to know you!!
Thank you so much again, Claire. So much appreciated ;).
This was super helpful as i want to get into macro! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! As a short tip: what brought the fun and the quality (well, at least I think it's quality 🤣) into my macros was a flash and a diffusor. They don't cost an arm and a leg, but make things easier and so much better looking.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching🤗😉
What a wonderful video. I have been searching for exactly this info for years. Well done Wolf. 👌🏻
Thanks Jo. That's the best feedback one could wish for 😉
Great guide, thanks!
I found the same type of spider except more yellow and white, and got a cool action shot of it killing a fly.
Isn’t nature just amazing? I even think they change their colors.
So many years and I forgot about reverse mount. It gives a lot of fun and options. Especially with zoom lenses.
Oh yes, it does!
You presented quite a complex issue in a very simple easy to understandable way.
Thank you!
The amount of work, knowledge, and production quality you put into this video is astounding. My respects.
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Best macro video for begginers, you deserve a follow
Thank you so much, André 🙏🙏
Awesome stuff! I just purchased the tubes to try out with my 24 and my 50.
Thank you! Enjoy the fun 😉👍
Saw the thumbnail and had to click! I took a photo of this type of spider the other day. Only have extension tubes atm but going to try adding the Raynox this weekend.
Enjoy! They are the most amazing spiders to photograph because they sit still AND look in your direction AND look spectacular alienlike 😆.
I’m really glad I stayed until the end! The image stacking turned out quite spectacular. Will definitely be attempting this at some point with other subject matters. Thank you! The last one is nicer overall though.
Thanks for staying till the end. It was super fun and even I wouldn't have expected that outcome ;)
I clicked because i recognised the spider You photographed, it's a lady named Thomisus onustus, and now I'm into macro photography. Thank You
😂 That’s the best feedback one could ever wish for 🤗. Thank you and thanks for the identification 🙏🙏
Wow Wolf, such detailed information and fun stuff. Thanks a lot and keep posting those videos!
Thank you, Adel. Much appreciated feedback 😉🙏
Man, you're nothing but a genius. Amazing video, dude!
Wow, thanks, Christian 🤗🙏
Awsome video and the last image is by far the best great work and very well explained,
Thank you, Mark 🤗🙏🤗
The options are almost endless! Great comparison video!
Thank you, Hrishikesh. Yes they are 😉.
A beautiful goldenrod crab spider was a great subject.
Thank you for the identification. Yes, it was a beauty 😍
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen!! 👏🏻
Wow! Thank you so much for such a great feedback!!!
I really enjoyed this video. I love these technical info sessions about gear and products. Very informative and well made Thank you.
Thanks so much for your feedback 🙏🙏
This is amazing. I'd tried a reverse mount with some old glass but was using the 50mm. I"m going to have to try to go back now and use the 28mm w/rings to see if that's any better. Excellent video in every single way. Headed to the diffuser video now!
Thank you, Ryan! I hope you enjoy the diffuser video too.
Amazing Video. I am just about to start Macro Photography so this was great to watch.
Glad it was helpful, Nik! Thank you for your feedback! A small tip: the biggest jump in macro photography is probably using a speedlight with a diffusor. That will lift your photography by a few levels. In case you don't know what that is, here is a video: ruclips.net/video/bDC1aqNSOgQ/видео.html
Enjoy macro, and plant some mint or lavender to attract lots of insects.
Best comparison video ever. Thank you so much for this detailed and informative explanation. And I'm shocked that reverse lens with extension tubes is the most zoomed one. Maybe I should convert my 55-250mm + Raynox 250 kit to some reversed wide angle lens 😅
Thank you 🤗🤗🤗. I just saw Laowa announced a new lens. It’s a never ending story of needing different equipment 😂😂
I agree. Love your last photo
Fabulous video! I love the comparisons you made, and the way you made them. I don't have many RUclips subscriptions, but you are now one of mine!
Wow, thanks, Burt. I really appreciate that 🙏🙏
I just found your channel by chance and I love your style so far. You've earned a new follower my friend. Thank you!
Thanks for subscribing🙏🙏! I hope you find even more interesting stuff 😉
