I’m 54 and this show, album, and book shaped my life. I married much later in life because of “Atalanta,” felt empowered to earn a PhD, and spent over half of my career working with children to help them become free-thinkers…like this shoe did. I even got to thank Kris Kristofferson in person when I performed in a show with him for being a part of this production. I am so grateful for Marlo Thomas! I want to thank her in person too!
Free to be was so big in the community that I grew up in during the late 70's and early 80's that I thought everyone my age knew about it. However, in college, it was difficult to find someone who heard about it. It is a fantastic movie. Thank you for making this video.
I'm 50.....this was my soundtrack growing up, and I've lived by it pretty much my whole life. Love love love this.

I'm 15, so it came out a long time before I was born, but my mom used to show me all of the free to be you and me songs a lot when I was younger. I remember when I was like 3-5 years old and my dad would sometimes get mad at me for crying and then I told my mom and she played "It's Alright to Cry".

we had this on dvd and i remember watching it all the time when i was little (i’m in high school rn.) i keep getting the songs stuck in my head to this day, even though it’s been years since i’ve last heard them!
What I remember Marlo Thomas for is for her performance in the Rankin Bass adaptation of Cricket On The Hearth alongside her father, Danny Thomas.
I think "Ladies First" was based on a short story by Shel Silverstein. He's the guy who wrote "A Boy Named Sue", which Johnny Cash famously recorded live. If you read Silverstein's works and listen to the songs he wrote, you'll find that this dude was, well, something else! He also wrote "Put Another Log On The Fire", which outlaw country artist Tompall Glaser covered.
I think the notes say that Mary Rodgers (of Freaky Friday fame) collaborated with Shel on "Ladies First". He also wrote a poem based on the story--it's in A Light In The Attic. Shel also wrote "Helping" for the album, which shows up as a poem in either Where The Sidewalk Ends or A Light In The Attic.
Late 60s baby here. And yes, I remember this well in my childhood. Especially the fact that this was around the time I started crushing on Michael Jackson. And as for Marlo Thomas, you forgot to mention that she was the star of her own TV series sitcom, "That Girl". (C'mon... you HAD to have seen the "Family Guy" parody! lol!) XD.

Born in '64. My mother took us to a hippy cathar church and we kids performed this for the church. When we moved from the community to a really rural area in 1979 it was culture shock. It was like being shot back a hundred years and it's felt that way ever since.

Happy early birthday and I just want to say thank you for sharing your love for Free to Be You and Me. I was a 70's kid and grew up with listening to the record constantly, singing along with it. It really is timeless.
LOL, That guy is "Alan Alda". He played "Hawkeye" on MASH. He was to the 70's, what Tom Hanks was to the 90's. Yes, he was a big movie star also.

My Mom gkt me this album when i was little i always loved the messages that it had. The songs were great on this album . wish it could be reinvented today so the new generations could ejoy it and. Possibly learn its message to make it a better world out there

I will be 50 years old my next birthday and I clearly remember this film and while some of my classmates hated sitting there watching it, I was loving it!! I love the "baby" section where the two babies were debating on which sex the were.

I was born then. I was 10 when it came out, and it was a big deal. There were many ppl who had an issue with "Free To Be You And Me". It's a huge big deal!!!

I think every young person today should see this. A lot of people believe that everything progressive, whether it be gender neutrality, feminism, anti-racism or any open minded thought is ✨new✨
Sadly, it’s not. Progress is just very very slow. There was way less racism in the U.S., in the mid 70s than there was by the mid 80s. Progress is not linear either.

I'm 49 and my elementary school played it for us in music class and even put it on as a school play! Then I didn't hear it for years until we found it and bought the CD for my young sons. It's preachy on a "progressive" sort of way, but it's also sweet and nostalgic for me, so I didn't mind playing it while my fellas played in Room Time. So now it's nostalgic for them.
But how things have changed in fifty years. Then it was okay for William to want a doll because one day he'd be a Daddy. Now his parents would put him on puberty blockers and set him up for surgery. 😬😥

I loved seeing Free To Be You And Me back in the 1970s. I also enjoyed your video until your use of extreme foul language at the 17:05 mark. Although many swear words are (unfortunately) commonly used in this day and age, taking the Lord’s name in vain will always be deeply offensive to millions of people, including myself. It is particularly offensive when connected to children’s programming regardless of anyone’s personal choices regarding religion (or lack thereof).
Other than that, your praise of this movie is, in my personal opinion, spot on. Thank you for devoting some of your time to reviewing this wonderfully classic program.
