FREE TO BE...YOU AND ME continues to be one of the most remarkable achievements of children's media. Even if it were only just a collection of great stories and music told and sung by some of my favorite celebrities, it would be enough, but it is also a cornerstone of free-thinking. This excerpt is a perfect example of such. Atalanta might be the first time I ever saw a story where the princess wasn't the prize (and sadly, continues to be one of the few that has challenges this device). Both of the winners come away with agency and freedom. "Perhaps some day they will be married, and perhaps they will not. In any case, it is certain that they are both living happily ever after." Brilliant.
Nice rewrite of classical Greek mythology

This movie is one of the BEST examples you could set for any younger child. It has life lessons but in a way they can understand and enjoy it: music. Not only is it a great lesson for younger children, but also enjoyable to listen to eh stories and music, child or adult. I watched this when I was about 5 or 6 and I did t understand the importance of the lessons until I was older. This movie still stands to be one of my absolute favorites.
Atalanta taught me I could have dreams and go after them, and at 45 I still want to be her. Thank you so, so, so much for this story.
I had this on vinyl when I was a kid in the 70s. Hearing the outcome of this story blew my mind that there was an alternative option to the typical princess, happily ever after story. Now I'm 54 and happily never been married. 🚫💍 🙂
I love this!!!! We used to listen to the cassette of free to be ALL THE TIME. Thank you for uploading all these clips. I really, really appreciate such wonderful memories that helped shape me as a kid and an adult.
I bought the CD as an adult and now that my niblings are reaching the age where their aunt started listening to the album, their aunt will be playing it for them in the car.
I wish that my childless, single, forty-something female friends had paid more attention to this story. I love being single in my 40s, but I am not too happy when my friends start changing their entire lives when the slightest suggestion of a relationship enters their lives.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU AS A KID?
For those who knew me during my serious athletic endeavors, I was a sprinter at heart. Since the age of 9, all I wanted to do was run, and run I did, right through college and beyond. This record story/cartoon (with Marlo Thomas and Alan Alda) was a heavy inspiration in my developing brain, and yes, I traveled the world too.
Reminds me of the archery contest scene in Brave. When I first saw that years ago I thought of this
this brings back so many childhood memories
I listened to this on my iPod 😢 I miss this!
I remember this story best of all from Free to be You and Me. It was a great lesson that there are more options than just marriage as happily ever after-for both boys and girls!
What a brilliant piece of story-telling combined with voicing a simple but important message!
After all these years, I finally found it
yes, alan alda is the male voice. Free To Be... is a huge part of my child hood memories. The book fascinated me for years, dog-eared and loved. If I had it now, I think I would still read it.
Thanks Marlo for posting these... of course there are some stuff from the album that'd be cool too.
its a shame that this kind of story is not a Disney kind of film. It should be
Too busy getting woke.
Because Brave is nothing like this at all.
Watch Brave. I'm pretty sure Brenda watched Free to be You and Me when she was a kid!
Nice to hear the talented Alan Alda (of "M*A*S*H") fame providing the narration.
There are so many hidden things in this story. As a child I never thought about what this all meant. It was just a cartoon, but as an adult i see so clearly now the agenda behind this series. WOW.
Beautifully done and empowering.
Marcus Barton-Sconiers Ahh yes- maybe they will marry and maybe they will not- but they will be both live happily ever after! Right? Well, let’s say one wants to marry and the other does not, does that sound happily ever after? I think not! That sounds like misery! If they truly cared for kids, why didn’t they teach them REALITY rather than fantasy!
You people are confusing the original, untainted form of progressivism with the modern evil that's ground its name into dust.
This cartoon was meant to teach people that you don't HAVE to get married jusr because society tells you to, you can find happiness elsewhere if that's where life takes you, that's why they use the word "perhaps" at the end.
You in the replies are correct in pointing out that this doesn't address when two parties don't agree on whether they should get married, but thinking through that makes it obvious just how unrelated that discussion is to the topic of the animation. The animation is about deciding for yourself whether you should pursue a relationship, not about what to do when you are already in one and have to decode whether to get married. You are taking the marriage metaphor too literally.
Look I know know this is not the right answer but I remember watching this as a 7 yr old kid and being utterly perplexed as to why Atalantis would give up a catch like John just to travel the world. He was such a great guy, I guess I was extremely “boy-crazy” from a very early age! 😂
oh my god, this is back in the day....
As an asexual woman, I approve of this cartoon greatly!
RebelAngelMist
You are defective, so it isn't surprising.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 I'm afraid your words are very harsh and cruel my friend. If you are religious, we are to judge not lest we be judged, but instead judge others by the fruits they produce. As for RebelAngelMist, you do not know her story, and whatever struggles she endured to come to terms with being asexual, calling her defective will not help her, as we are all deserving of God's love. And besides people like like RebelAngelMist would be among the people described by Jesus as "Eunochs who are Eunochs by birth, Eunochs made so by man, and Eunochs who choose to remain celibate in exchange for the Kingdom of Heaven, and for all who is able to accept that fact to do so." So we should accept the fact that RebelAngelMist is Asexual, whatever her reasons, and love thy neighbor as thyself.
So you think Princess Atalanta might be an ace too?
@@FoxyGal18
1) I am not religious - I am an atheist, so it was quite humorous for you to write all of that nonsense to try to guilt me as if I was a religious person.
2) I don’t think you know what a eunuch is.
3) What I wrote was _FACTUAL._
@@anti-ethniccleansing465I know very well what a Eunuch is, and your label of 'defective' is not fact at all. Sounds to me like you need to get right with God.
that sounds like Alan Alda doing some of the naration.
+TimberBlay It is.
it is. he provides all the male voices.
Did anyone else remember this when they saw Brave?
?
Yeah, brave pulls from this troupe a little, except brave focuses more on the bond between mother and daughter. Both tell a beautiful story nonetheless
Love this
This is so cool!
My childhood!
Awee this was awesome
My fav!
Hashtag feminism
Actually though, this story has always been my favorite.
Maybe they will decide to get married after all. But because they want to and not because it is what is expected of them.
EXACTLY!
Lovely.
They didn't show the part at the end where Princess Atalantis sank beneath the ocean, never to be seen again.
In the real myth of Atalanta (as I remember it from grade nine English class, anyway), the young man drops three golden apples on the ground, and Atalanta stops to pick them up, because her athletic prowess is overcome by her love for material things. However, I like this story much better than that one. :)
Indeed, as I recall, the golden apples even were provided BY A GODDESS -- what a jerk! This retelling is great.
Not only that, but in the myth, Atalanta would behead any suitors she beat in a race. This version is a lot nicer.
Omg is that Alan Alda's voice for the king?!
Yup! He was involved in other tracks on the original album, as well as the later TV special.
Nostalgasm
Is that Alan Alda on narration?
Yes - he was involved in various items on the original concept album, as well as on the subsequent TV special. Marlo Thomas is the other voice actor.
@@tejaswoman Is it just me, or does Alan Alda sound like Peter Fernandez. (Speed Racer)
Atalanta is one amazing princess and refuses to be married off like a piece of property by her father.
It's extremely weird to me that this is labeled "Princess Atalantis" - isn't her name "Atalanta" in the book???
Yes
"Atalanta," Not "Atalantis."
I won't bore ya with what I was doing selling retail records and tapes when I first sawe the LP version, but I will refer ya tp pg 245 Chapter 36 "Growing Up Free" in her autobioplus "Growing Up Laughing". Marlo Thomas is truly a unique person, as well as a shitty "spit take" ,,,I'm not into Dolls, vbut my grandboys dig Bumblebee and Optimus Prime and so...same stuff, and no reason for being put down.
I really need to know where the background music is from.
Atalanta sounds like Marlo Thomas.
It is!
Fairy tales have changed since Grimm's "Hansel & Gretel." Later, Atalanta will most likely stop running suddenly when she turns her ankle, and John will bump into her. Who knows what happens next??
The princess' name is "Atalanta" NOT "Atalantis". If you'd actually listened to the words, you'd have heard that.
You're tell Marlo Thomas?
HankSellars Check the listing for the album on Amazon and you'll see that Track 14 is called "Atalanta".
Jake Keplin Oh I know that. We have this on CD. What is very funny to me is that you are correcting the woman who made the album. Even if she has made the mistake of posting the name incorrectly, you are still correcting Marlo Thomas because she is the person who uploaded this as well. Should we write her?
yes
There's a bunch of old people on this I'm like 16
atalanta
@thaielephant
Especially since they call her Atalanta all throughout the video.
JAN3
Dude, the name is wrong. It's "Atalanta," not "Atalantis." Otherwise, thanks for posting.
I gotta find me a John 😔
AtalantA
Ugh, if only this were the real story of Atalanta...
Ha ha ha you WILL get married
That is what People DO
Freaky they had us watch this garbage in the children's house mankato Minnesota
Wow, this tale did not age well.
Why not? I think it has a great message. Not everyone needs to marry.
