Kris from Rockville MD. Will certainly focus on this next time at the range. I am 81, have been playing for 60 years, have a 15.7 handicap index, so just an average duffer. But the driver is my favorite club. Key checkpoints for me are: (1) at the start of the backswing move my arms and core together, maintaining the triangle formed by the arms, keeping the club head a bit outside and not taking the club behind me; (2) be sure to turn fully, with my back to the target, which requires me to let my body relax so it is flexible and allow my mind to be calm so I take the time needed to turn back and not start the downswing prematurely out of anxiety to hit the ball); (3) keep my left arm pretty straight and get the left upper arm up pretty high under my chin (as one pro says, bite the bicep); (4) keep my left wrist bowed or flat (in flexion) and right wrist in extension, which keeps the shaft on plane; and (5) maintain my spine angle, resisting the tendency to stand up. Seems like a lot of things to think about but it's really not. As for the hooks you mention, yes they can come from overdoing the release. However, I find that the occasional dreaded big hook that takes my drive into the left rough, the woods, the lake or out of bounds is usually caused by failing to fully turn back on the backswing. That gets everything out of synch. I may be tired near the end of a round, or still thinking about a previous bad shot or distracted by thoughts of dangers to avoid on that drive. Any of those things can cause me to rush the downswing and my arms get ahead of the turn of my body, causing the club face to be closed. Arms can always go faster than your big thick core, so tempo and a full turn back are important.
Todd, this is Mike from Louisville. Seeing this makes perfect sense when paired with another video tip of yours which discusses hitting in to out instead of out to in with the driver to hit a draw. Oh, and add the staggered right foot to improve back swing rotation. BOOM! Talk about bombing drives and hitting fairways! The staggered right foot helps me develop a better club head path to get the club head moving in to out at contact. I search for that feel and motion on practice swings. Then I step up and rip it... Well really I try to maintain a calm swing and not get anything out of sync. It's like good tasting food. Take the ingredients and put them together per the recipe and the results are fantastic. Same with the ingredients I've picked up from your RUclips channel. Well executed drives are going 20-30 yards longer... In the fairway! These tips are similarly applicable to irons. Those, too, are going longer and on the line to a heavy draw. I'm still working on technique for trustable execution. But after playing golf for 35 years and to FINALLY card your first EAGLE, something's going right!
Mike, this is the post of the week! The food analogy is perfect. Good coaching is a mixture of information and timing of that information. Appreciate you posting and sharing....let’s keep improving 👊

Pretty good, but never touched on what powers the swing. Does the left shoulder pull the club through while the body turns? Are the hands soft all the way through and past contact? Does the right hand actually hit at or add power to make the release happen or does it simply happen in the hands by centrifugal force? Good morning. my family got me the VLS for c-mas!!! Yeah for me! I’ve changed my grip to a strong grip… I am REALLY struggling with my weight shift… thin shots/ fat shots…I have been terrible! I like what I see in the program.. it’s early still.. Harley’s 67 from SD..
Randy, 68, from Hillsboro, Or and Waipahu, Hi. I think you have hit on what is causing me to continually slice. I’ve pretty much gotten the VLS down pretty good. But I believe that I’ve been concentrating too much on maintaining the strong grip all the way through the swing, hence never releasing as you describe. Also, I may be trying to stay too vertical in the downswing and not coming in under the “red line.” I anticipate that my timing for the release will be the most difficult part. I’m going to try and incorporate these aspects of the drive but I do anticipate that it will take some time to transition from exaggerating the parts to actually getting a decent swing. Obviously more to follow…

Hey Todd, I'm from Columbus, Ohio and I'm what you would call( aged 72) an experienced golfer. Now did that lesson fit the Vertical Line Swing? Because when I do the vertical swing I'm going back more to get more speed. I'm so glad for the vertical swing I had a stroke 6 years ago and I'm now getting back to playing golf. It did help me get rid of my slice and I'm getting a few more yards. Thank you for your instruction. Bob K

Yes Todd my hand is up as my “miss” now is no longer the infamous slice but a nasty snap hook! BUT most of the time its straight or a baby fade with the big stick
My miss is a low smothered hook from releasing too fast, so I am actually working with my instructor to delay the release (similar to your example for people with a ton of clubhead speed). I am working on speed training in addition to swing instruction. I occasionally hit a slight push, but I never slice. I used to slice when I was younger but literally can't remember the last time I did.

Hope you survived the storm and are doing ok....scary stuff! Yes, when we hit up on the ball, all things being equal, the ball will travel further. Here is a good video to help ruclips.net/video/Vm7m1v_bDt4/видео.html
Hi Todd, thanks for the video. I'm a 76 year old experienced golfer from the mountains of western NC. I've been chasing some additional clubhead speed to help with the loss of distance as I get more experienced. Carry a 12.3 handicap, 87 mph swing speed, average drive 210-215. Any tips or help that you can offer will be appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks Todd. From one of your previous videos regarding a swing for experienced golfers, I've been flaring my back foot with a slightly closed stance and that tip helped my rotation. Haven't tried flaring both feet, but I will this afternoon at the range. Just ordered the Kindle version of your book and will start that this afternoon before the range. Thanks for your quick reply and your appreciation for the senior golfers. Have a great and blessed day.
I AM tuning into this video because I'm hooking the ball too much. I try to come more across the ball and over that line, and I end up double crossing it pretty bad a lot of the time. Controlling the club face has become difficult for me (2 handicap) with driver lately and it seems my trail hand overtakes my lead hand and the face becomes VERY shut. How can one release the club (need it to generate speed like you said... ball speed is ~160-165 mph) without shutting the face so hard? This video was posted two years ago and I'm sure you won't see this comment but I would love some feedback on this or a video made for people who hook the ball and how to NOT close the clubface when you are releasing the club.
@@SqueezerFadeGolf thanks for posting. We have a couple great videos on our channel regarding the hook. Check them out. I would also suggest reading this www.badliegolfbook.com
Hi Todd ; I love your lessons. Thank you for what you are doing to make easier this wonderful sport. My question is : do you suggest the same release (supination of the left hand after the impact) for the other clubs ( irons, hybrids, woods)? Guy from france
Chad from upstate NY Hi Todd, I've added alot of your tips to my game and love your lessons! Just wondering how far you typically hit your driver? You have a very effortlessly smooth swing and I definitely think people would benefit from seeing your ball flight and distance on a shot tracer during your lessons. I know it definitely helps me when I see effortless swings getting good distance purely on proper ball striking and club path.
Chad, thanks for the nice compliment. My average drive is around 265 to 285 depending on the conditions and how I am swinging. Biggest challenge for me is keeping the tee ball in play on a consistent basis...when I do this, good things happen. How is the driver for you?
Good question, there is more release and rotation of the forearms for a driver for most golfers. The other area to focus on is the set up as it is different for a driver. We cover this in detail in my book The Bad Lie www.badliegolfbook.com/
@@USGOLFTVshow But here's the conundrum. Even though it means giving-up some driving distance, is it better for us high-handicappers to first have a single swing that we can come to rely on (and find the fairway), rather than try to have a different swing for the driver vs. the other clubs? That is, is it better to have a driver swing that produces drives in the range of awful to really good, vs. a swing that produces dependable drives in the mediocre to good range?
@@markliquorman9349 we are on the same page. It is a cornerstone of our VLS System where we teach one swing with variations to the set up based on the club. Have you read our book, The Bad Lie? We cover this in detail www.badliegolfbook.com/
Hi, shouldn't the clubhead go up and down the red line to stay on plane? Coming from the inside AND closing/releasing the club will surely create a big hook, won't it?
Solid post, yes if you do drop the club way inside and rotate the face the ball will tend to hook. However, most golfers do the opposite so we are trying to help them get a different feel.
This is Michael from Alabama and wondering if I'm doing more of the vertical swing do I still want the head to come under? I do alot of pull hooks due to my left arm being in a sling/ brace so I REALLY have to do your right-left 3 times cause if I rush the swing it's definitely pulling left but otherwise 200-215 down the middle
Yes it is on the heel, one of those that jars your hand but if I try and stay vertical and not rush downswing the every shot is straight and great trajectory
I really really have to practice 7 days a week rain or shine. When the power should be left arm but everything period is having to come from my right it Makes it a challenge for even ball placement
Tod! I tried to shallow the club but have tendency to hit the ground. If I hold on to the angle to avoid the fat shot, I slide the ball. What do I do wrong?
What part of TX is Silsbee? Not so much lag as releasing speed and face squaring. Keep in mind if you over do this move, you may start hitting hooks. Like many things in golf, moderation is KEY
Hi from Paris, Ontario, Canada. As a lefty on my last round I was pulling many drives to the right but going very long. It was difficult to make par from the trees. I think my left elbow was not tucked into the ribs as I was making centre contact on the club face.

I raise my hand. I hit or fight hooks with FW woods and hybrids. But with my driver I do hang on a bit creating a slight cut which I don't need as I'm a geezer and need distance. So if I'm afraid if I do what you suggest it may in fact help with my driver but I'm afraid it will bleed into the rest of my game which won't be good. I'm not a hater btw.
I’ve tried everything to keep from slicing the golf ball. I do pretty good for a few weeks, then i start back slicing. Norman G Page a coal miner from Eastern Kentucky
When you asked the "hooking the golf ball" question, my hand immediately went up; my problem is that I sometimes hit either a pull-hook or a pull-slice after I hit a few of these hooks (or severe draws) and try to "correct" it. I become TOO aware of the fact that I am turning it over too much because I "over release" the club ... and BOOM, here comes an OTT move with a closed clubface at impact. I'd love to know how to cure this! BTW, I am originally from Buffalo, NY and have lived in the Philadelphia, PA area for more than 36 years.
@@USGOLFTVshow - I am not the best person to ask about the 76ers, although I watch them and follow the team in the papers. Now, if you asked me about the Philadelphia Union (MLS soccer), or even the Phillies - or, better yet, my Buffalo Bills - I would have answers galore for you.
i was hooking so bad a formet pga tour player and also my pga instructor neighbour couldnt fix it...i fixef on my own.after seeing patrickntead hold off his driver to avoid a hook...switch to a very week grip and when you swing your driver have the driver head finish right of your target like moe norman..surprisingly t will go far because it will be straight...u kind of keep your wrists cocked in followthrough
Hey Todd, James from Colorado Springs, my issue is i tend to swing very hard, being a descendant of caveman, and it seems like the i out swing the flex on my stiff flex shaft. Unless i tee up very high and place ball ahead of my lead foot at address! This makes my aim very inconsistent! Need to figure out the gray area!
Colorado Springs is an amazing area, just drove through there a few weeks back. Here is a good video to watch that will help you ruclips.net/video/EBB0SoqzGbU/видео.html
In order to allow the clubface to close properly you MUST RESERVE that closing until AFTER impact. Amateurs tend to manually close the face prior to impact so they can never allow the proper release because they no longer have the ability because they didn't reserve that ability.
Hi Todd - Phil from the UK here. You are covering some really useful stuff but, as has been said before, I think you are really missing a trick and are lagging behind other coaches with online channels by not having a shot tracer. You continually talk about the benefits of Live View (alright as far as it goes but it's hardly revolutionary - it simply records / replays your swing) BUT you are completely missing out on useful data such as the clubface angle at impact, the swing direction relative to target, clubhead speed, distance etc. and critically, seeing where the ball ends up! Please, please start using a shot tracer because as things stand it is impossible for viewers to see the ball once it has left your clubface ... you regularly say "great shot, really solid" and of course we trust you but it would be SO much better to actually see a trace of the shot shape and where it ends up. Hope you will take these comments in the constructive manner in which they are intended!
Phil, appreciate your feedback and honest input...it is always welcome! We have plans to do more "tech" information in our content while also being true to our content in keeping the game simple. Far too often golf instructors complicate the game and provide too much information...we are striving to find the balance. Hope you are enjoying the channel!

Hi, actually our brain have been made so confused by the industries that we can't solve the easiest things. And land up at doctors (pros) spending money. Unless, if not pro, it’s better to keep things simple so that we can concentrate more on 'GOLF' -- recreation !!! Just basics with proper grammar / fundamental. We amateurs are done. In my case, I learned basic grammar and scores below 80 consistently. My only investment was to learn grammar without even RUclips in those days. Trust me...(if you want to). Humbly, golf is a journey until you are able to walk. And 'sustainably' at all ages is the key as amature. 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Lol I am here because my hook is terrible! I fixed my slice and now its a terrible hook. I was at the range this morning and felt like I was releasing to early causing an over the top swing? I guess I still don't know..
Yes and no. Lag is typically referenced to the downswing pre impact. It is the angle between the lead wrist and the clubshaft angle. Here is a good video to start ruclips.net/video/ZESLBpnOGAE/видео.html
I like the stay below the line thought. But, I'm not so sure about the glove hand turning down. Yeah, yeah, I know. That's what i does, but the club face always stays "square to the line" it's traveling. I started trying to roll the club closed maybe 5 or 6 years ago and became the worst pull hooker on the planet... I like the idea of a release more like a hockey player. The club head does go from somewhat open to closed, but don't forcefully do that. Let the club head pass the hands just after contact, by straightening that right arm...
Near me I'd recommend Royal Aberdeen, Trump International,Cruden Bay, Carnoustie, murcar links, montrose links and meldrum house golf course. Loads of good courses in the area but these are some of the 5* courses.

Looks like a somewhat less vertical backswing with the driver. Right?
Good idea, yes as the clubs get longer the swing is not as vertical...however, be careful to not get flat...that is a death move for many amateurs
Guy, thanks for asking. Yes, however the longer the club the more you will need to feel the rotation. Your area is on our bucket list. 👍
Hello from Denmark🇩🇰
How to choose New putter ?
Chad from upstate NY
Hi Todd, I've added alot of your tips to my game and love your lessons!
How different is the driver swing/release from that of the other clubs?
-- Mark from Land O Lakes, FL

Our pleasure, which part was most helpful?
Is your miss a low left shot?
Yes it is on the heel, one of those that jars your hand but if I try and stay vertical and not rush downswing the every shot is straight and great trajectory
I really really have to practice 7 days a week rain or shine. When the power should be left arm but everything period is having to come from my right it Makes it a challenge for even ball placement

I think my left elbow was not tucked into the ribs as I was making centre contact on the club face.

excellent tip..

Norman, appreciate you taking time to post and what you are doing to help our country...did this information help?
When you asked the "hooking the golf ball" question, my hand immediately went up; my problem is that I sometimes hit either a pull-hook or a pull-slice after I hit a few of these hooks (or severe draws) and try to "correct" it. I become TOO aware of the fact that I am turning it over too much because I "over release" the club ... and BOOM, here comes an OTT move with a closed clubface at impact. I'd love to know how to cure this! BTW, I am originally from Buffalo, NY and have lived in the Philadelphia, PA area for more than 36 years.
Great post...how are the 76’ers going to be this year?
@@USGOLFTVshow - I am not the best person to ask about the 76ers, although I watch them and follow the team in the papers. Now, if you asked me about the Philadelphia Union (MLS soccer), or even the Phillies - or, better yet, my Buffalo Bills - I would have answers galore for you.

Great area!
Solid points, the key is the timing of the release and the extend of the release...good post.
