After watching over 100 videos and taking about 20 lessons with 5 different coaches, his is the first time I recall being exposed to the idea of pausing the hips like this. I have always turned my body exactly as you say not to and have always had problems with distance. This video is an eye-opener for me. Thanks, Jonathan.
This was so good. I’m working with an instructor right now and I wish he would have focused on this more for me right now. I’m smacking a 7 iron 150 by muscling it. Soon as I get this down, I’m in the 170s for sure. This whipping motion is how these guys hit so damn far. Thanks for the great explanation.
Wow, sometimes I unintentionally do this and hit clean strikes but most times, I was always taught to keep the body turning, which never worked for me. Finally, someone clearing up this misconception. Thank you
This channel is the most informative of all golf channels on RUclips backed by technical and practical facts. I have learnt a few techniques from you Jonathan, keep doing the good work and God will give you the recognition you deserve
This is so helpful! I just started getting lessons and learned how to properly use my hips to shift weight and use all that energy to increase my speed and distance. But I had trouble understanding what my coach meant by braking earlier to throw the club with max force. This video explains it perfectly! Will be practicing this drill thank you so much. Keep up the great content!!
I think the good thing about this breakdown is that I can finally make my swing look like the pros. The “incorrect” clips mirror my swing so it helps to have something to contrast the two ways. I can hit well with the incorrect way, probably due to habit, but I want to change my swing to match your “correct” way
This is an excellent video, Jonathan. The pause moment allowing my hip to move first then my upper body then shoulder is a sensation I get with my driver. For some reason, it’s harder to repeat with irons. I can’t wait to put it into practice at the range. Thanks for the good work. Keep those videos coming. Dave Western Australia

This tip is fresh to me and fully on point. This is exactly what I'm seeing with my swing that's missing. I'm very glad to have chanced upon this video. Subbed!
Great explanation as always and great exercise on swing sequence and body/wrist release. Have already been working on this and am finding it is also great for keeping my body (center) from swaying and keeping my head down and back through impact. Heading for the range. Many thanks!
Regardless how many golf coach I have, I still return here! Still my only go-to for summary & reminders. I will send u my golf swing Jonathan. Thank u for another excellent teaching! This I will add to my drills
100 per cent useful. Nothing is right if not EVERYTHING is right. That is the real challenge in golf… you cannot do things « a little bit » right or wrong. Either every single detail is correct or the swing is wrong…
I like the whip analogy. If you throw a whip out and keep the handle moving forward, there is no energy transfer. So how do you transfer the energy? Stop/Pull the handle back. Most sport movements are about energy transfer. In golf I think of my legs as the handle and that leg extension on the downswing is that stop/pull back. If my wrists are loose, I should have good energy transfer.
Thank you so much, this is exactly how I felt, physically, the golf swing being the most efficient. But curiously my coach tells me to do the opposite!
I used to release my club just how you instructed, but several coaches changed it to the body release method that you told us how not to do, because they said it's handsy. If you or someone else can provide more clarity, I would appreciate it.
Its a balance between both and you can do one without the other. I would have to see your swing in order to give you more specific advise but depending on your tendencies you may have been over utilising your hands and arms and underutilising the body
@wordupmybrotha I can, as this guy hasn't explained it properly. The term release is gone from golf now days. As a korean born immigrant myself, 99% koreans will teach this releasing with hands method. Yet the longest hitters from the korean arsenal of players will prefer the body release swing, like min Woo lee. Most of the teaching professionals in korea cater to 50 plus year Olds and women who can't swing past 70miles an hour clubhead speed. They promote the massive into out club path philosophy, thus they cannot have any tension within their forearms through the ball to prevent snap hooks. The 'body release' takes a vision of 'delivery is more important than speed' with introduction of technology like trackman, etc. Once the leading coaches around the world, ie usa and UK, realized without delivery, u cannot achieve the optimum ball launching mechanics, the clubspeed became a 2nd important factor, as the most important factor now is the ball speed which combines the benefit of having a fast swing speed at impact and an ideal delivery position as well. Thus the delivery became more important and the techniques became about less clubface rotation and dynamic loft and lie, coaches realized that it's simply not as effective to use the traditional wrist movement. In fact it was redeemed as not to use any and just use the body turn to complete the swing, in a short and left finish position compared to the old high finish. That's kind of a short explanation, but yeah to explain it detail.. I really need to start my golf channel..
I so appreciate his information but I believe this is counter to what Hogan did as explained (and taught by Gregg McHatton). Worth further investigation, but essentially (the way I understand it) stopping anything during the swing is counter to obtaining full power and a consistent golf swing. Thank you again Jonathan.
I think golf if a game of contrary…if you hear for example Gary Player he says you should hit the ball with the force of your body especially ad impact …maybe you mean the same thing. In my case I can not feel my hip …but what I can feel is at the beginning of downswing I let my right arm kind of moving down (not rotate ) I believe this automatically move my hips as said here. Anyhow thanks your explanation is very clear .
This might be best video for me! I always dragging my body with same speed as downswing. The result? My shoot all tend to left and my back left area rhomboids are sore af last till 1 week eventho im 25
Excellent video, Would be good to follow up with the turning of the wrists and how the arms end up, For me I often feel they have gone wobbly after the follow through
Hi Jonathan, as far as i understand, there are like to different golf release techniques right now: the one you teach, and the release of golfers like Tommy Fleetwood, that he rotates the hip with the release, just as the opposite of what you teach. I assume both are correct, and probably according to your body type, works better. As far as I see, you technique probably feels more natural, less prone to back issues and effortless. The one similar to Fleetwood, probably the biggest advantage is that you get better performance, you have maybe more control of the direction of the ball? I am waiting for your opinion on this. Thanks in advance and amazing channel.
Nice progression...progressions are a missing element from many presentations. I do have a presentation suggestion, reduce qualifying language, "kinda", "like", "basically". It takes away from your natural confidence (w modesty- a difficult combination to master, and you have it naturally). Nice work and thank you!
JKM, Can you please do a video on hitting fades. ball placement. hitting down or up on the ball. what are common mistakes people make when practicing a fade? I have an instructor who wants me to hit fades and down on the ball. I'm getting a lot of different information and I don't know what actually works best for me.
In an effort to swing with hands ahead of clubhead at impact, I tend to BLOCK my shots to the right. Is this BLOCK to the right due to too much body? … or not enough release? I believe I don’t RELEASE the club as you describe (trying not to release too soon, or to not flip) Yesterday, I tried to SLING the club through impact, and struck the ball nicely. Impact happens so quick, it’s hard to feel it. So is letting go, and SLINGING it, a good way to release the club. Love your simple, easy to implement instruction. Great description of body position at impact. I’ve heard your hands should get to the ball before the right shoulder. True? I’m definitely going to try that slow motion release drill. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻
Man, your the best. Thank you for this. Question. I've been doing this drill, and I use a divot board - what causes me to hit the mat way ahead of the ball (like 6 inches)? I imagine i'd either completely whiff or top the ball if I hit a ball. The divot pattern is still in line with the initial target, does that mean my low point moved forward / ahead of the ball? At times the swing path can feel "out to in" but on video it isn't.
Hello Jonathan, Great video as always, I have always enjoyed your days with Golftec. I completely understand what you are saying and yes it produce a lot more speed but sometimes I have trouble with over doing it and the ball hooks left out of no where. I know I probably wasn't synced properly on that particular shot but is there something we can do to work on it not going to the left? ( You might be thinking about saying " Bro, you just need to practice more) hahahahaha Thanks
I would need to see your swing in order for me to give you specific advise but the best way to get a good understanding of any new movement is to do correct rehearsals and drills. However if you struggle with the ball going to the left then the most obvious reason would most likely be that the club face is too closed at impact. You can focus on grip and other things that can influence club face throughout the backswing and downswing
@@JKMGolf Thank you very much Jonathan, The grip is worth a look at and I will continue to work on it. Thanks for the reply. Wishing you endless success.
When I feel the sequence timed up correclty, the result is dead pulls left. Like out of bounds pulls. Do you have a suspected cause and fix for this shot shape? Excellent video.
Hi Jonathan, does the "stall" happen after impact or slightly before to whip the club into the ball? I would think it would be too late if it happens after impact. Can you please explain for me? Great videos, thank you!
With all due respect Jonathan you have an amazing swing and grasp of the game and it is specific to your ideals. After watching the video I think you better be mindful who you are "preaching" to when you teach this technique. The skill factor required to release the forearms and not as you put it wrists is going to leave a lot of beginners confused unless you break down the body release as well. You prefer the forearm release and it was taught to you fairly young from my understanding but to a golfer picking this up later on in life will encourage "scooping". What I foresee is many beginners trying your technique with a body release scope and start hooking balls. In the short be mindful golf is not a one size fits all approach there is a different way of skinning the cat especially if the advice offered is not specific to skill factor of the golfer.
Do you use the same release woth wedge shots ? It seems when watching players on tour they use a kind of body release where the hands are really passive in order to keep the clubface square throughout the swing
it depends on the distance of the your shot with the wedge. The closer you are to the green you basically take away things in the swing that produce power so you would be using more of your body and quite the hands. But the further away you are the swing usually gets closer and closer to fulle swing mechanics
When do you feel like you're trying to pop your left knee straight? Some times I feel my left glute pop with the knee. I feel like you are straight at the deceleration point. Almost as though you are using your left leg going straight to create that left wall for your arms and club head to catch up. Do you focus on this knee position?
I got injured 3 years ago trying to swing all my body after impact since i have a ctmaped front leg that i didnt fund a way to heal even after a lot of osteo and physio
In terms of weight shift, pressuring into the ground and posting and stretching up on the left/lead side, it seems as if this motion sequence acts like a door hinge allowing a door to correctly swing on its hinges. In the downswing, during transition, the shoulders remain closed and the right shoulder (and head) remain back, which allows the club head to be “thrown” through impact in the release. Please reply!
Problem for me if I try to release or whip at the ball and not turning my body to the left I always flipped too early hitting it thin or fat. How to time when and where to whip especially in this release pattern the club feels really heavy early in the downswing and clubhead always race past my hands.
I don’t think there is enough discussion about this for those learning the golf swing through RUclips. I have tried to blend aspects of the body and wrist release. I think where I get in trouble though is my wrists doesn’t necessary work properly and I tend to shut the face (upper body stall leading to flip of hands) at impact causing the occasional hook or block if I’m holding off the face too much and not getting the proper release.
both the body, arms and wrist are all related to each other so unless the body does what it is suppose to then it is difficult for the arms to do the right thing. The sequence of the swing is very important
Jonathon, as a Hogan follower I found this video a little confusing as it is My understanding that Hogan was almost 40 degrees open at impact,NOT more or less facing the ball at impact with the hands and club releasing against a slowing chest rotation. If You could clarify would be much appreciated. Also,do You feel Your teaching mostly mirrors the Jim hardy one plane swing. Thanks Ray
How can we do this without getting flippy? I feel like I can’t compress the ball as well or have good control over the shape of the ball flight with the wrist method.
You are rolling your wrists that after hit that right wrist is above left one. I'm wondering because as I learned and saw at pros they are not rolling but bending so right wrist stays below all the time. Can you clarify on this?
The body release is or was called stable release some time ago. The problem with current instruction vis the body release is that very few people can actually do it the same way the pros do. Or at least do it and generate decent swing speed. Most all amateurs would fo better follow the advice of JKM.
Many people i play with (especially older people) always tells me to keep my head down, this is probably the best way to explain the meaning of “head down”
I have also been told this is the handsy version of the release, more popular in Asia. I’ve never really treated it seriously but seems like I should give it a go. The problem with “full” body rotation for me is bad timing will lead to me either leave the face open and block/slice to the right or turn too much and hook it a little bit. The method described here seems to keep the club head in the straight delivery zone for longer just by keeping the hips stable so the hands and club head can travel down the target line longer. I will give it a try. Any tips around equipment for this swing- does going lighter or heavier help with this swing or it doesn’t matter?
When I learned how to decelerate my downswing and whip the head my golf game was forever changed. Great instruction on this feeling
After watching over 100 videos and taking about 20 lessons with 5 different coaches, his is the first time I recall being exposed to the idea of pausing the hips like this.
Sort of hard to get a coach who doesn’t teach body release. Pretty grim for folk who learned in the 90s
