    Thank you. My Rwandan friend said that their traditional diet was vegetarian before colonialism. People also had long life spans. I also heard that the Bantu and Dinka were vegetarian as well. The Coptics in Egypt believe they were originally vegetarian and this is the reason for their vegan fasting traditions. There is probably so much more that we don't know.

      @@AmandaFromWisconsin Egypt is Africa and many Egyptians are Black. The Copts are an example of people who believe themselves to have been vegetarian in ancient times. Coptics are descendants of ancient Egyptians - the language is derived from Hieroglyphics. Nubians ruled Egypt. The Zanj Uprising integrated East Africans into Iraq. There is so much more unknown Black history throughout the Middle East. Colonization has brainwashed us. If you really know Egypt, you will know the people have Africa in their blood.

      Egypt is a very mixed country with European, Berber, Arab and other ethnic groups mixed up in there, which isn't surprising given its location. Egypt is not a "black" nation... whatever "black" actually means... the Egyptians don't look particularly "black" to me, more varying shades of brown...
      Furthermore the ancient Egyptians were more like the Armenians and people of the Levant...
      "So it turns out that modern Egyptians share more genetic ancestry with Sub-Saharan Africans than ancient Egyptians did, while the ancient Egyptians show a closer genetic affinity with ancient people from the Near East and the Levant like Armenians... Looking back however, with the recent study in mind, it is highly possible that the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs had European or Armenian ancestry." @@pantha4pantera You obviously have never been to Egypt, especially Southern Egypt - it borders Sudan. Southern Egypt is where the ancient part of Egypt still exists. Yes Egyptians are mixed with Europeans (this is especially true in the North and in the big cities) but that came much later in history. Did you know that old European paintings from the 19th century depicting the Middle East were commercials for colonialism? Did you know that they lightened people’s skin and made them look more European? People have been brainwashed for a long time to believe lies. Even Egyptians have been brainwashed to hate their own Blackness - skin lighteners and hair straightening are huge industries. Many of them will even be happy that you have been fooled to think they are white. And it’s so easy to fool you when all you know is an Orwellian lie. All over the Middle East there is a history of African Ancestry that people like you have zero knowledge of. You also don’t know how much people hide what they really look like. Many Egyptians purposely stay out if the sun to make their skin as white as possible. It’s a survival instinct. Colonialism was incredibly brutal and terrorized people in a permanent way. And your ridiculous idea that ancient Egyptians were white is a continuation of this big huge LIE. It is an erasure of our history as human beings on this planet. Your source admits that Egyptians have African DNA. Egypt was ruled by Nubian Pharos too. Egypt is in Africa and borders other African countries. Egypt has been multicultural for thousands of years. That doesn’t change the fact that Egypt is Africa and Egypt is also Black.

      @@theartofbellydance blah blah blah you are so indoctrinated full of sh1t. Egypt is not "black" it is a mixed country, as one would expect given its location. European DNA is NOT new to Egypt, there used to be significant European populations throughout the Levant and North Africa, just those genetics are less prominent now they have been mixed with so many Arabs and in some regions sub-saharan africans.... That does not make them "black".

    The reason it's important to highlight Black folks here is because of toxic stigmas and stereotypes like veggie burgers being "white people food" when Black folks and Natives were forced on to poor quality meat/flour/processed foods ect. Veganism is a philosophy distinct from eating plant-based. And it's pretty telling that you would confuse and conflate those two concepts. While it's true that many cultures throughout history have subsisted on mostly or fully plant-based diets, that's not the same as saying they were VEGAN. Veganism implies seeing animals as individuals we should refrain from exploiting/harming/abusing for ANY purpose (including, but not limited to, entertainment or labor).

    • @dontnoable
      @dontnoable 3 года назад +14

      While you're right about the distinction between vegan and plant based & I see the value in that these days but I think if we reduce conversations to vegan = good, plant based = bad, we can miss out of some nuance & history.
      The vegan movement - a philosophy that is in a sense a response to especially horrific European originated practices of farming & consuming animals & their secretions which was exported with colonialism & capitalism around the world, can also be seen culturally as having roots that go much further back.
      There is a reason the word 'vegan' didn't exist til the 20th century, and that's because capitalistic industrial agriculture (which was exported from Europe) was what prompted the movement.
      In Europe until relatively recently (middle of the 19c), one of the leaders of one of the most prominent Christian churches in Europe banned the creation of a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, as it was seen as implying humans had an obligation of welfare to non human animals. Meanwhile Buddhist philosophy taught universal compassion for all beings (including animals) & people ate more plant based diets, & places around other continents - Asia, Africa (as I've been learning) & countless Indigenous peoples lived on plant based or largely plant based diets.
      Keep in mind that veganism is a movement prompted in response to industrial age aggriculture (which had been exported also to places that had previously had a heritage of low or no animal based diets).
      But it is worth acknowledging that it was European cultural practices that were exported to places that were already doing (not to romanticise or anything, same as with Buddhism) OK with their philosophy or outlook on non human animals, or at least far better, prior to the intrusion/invasion of European colonisers with our culture of dominance over animals.
      The UK talking about a half ass law to acknowledge that animals, at last, can be seen as sentient (so beyond obvious), not even to do anything about it, banning cruel farrowing crates - which is why we can't rely on laws.. just more of us need to just go vegan 🌱 (& unbeknownst to most nonvegans & many vegans, it is a philosophy open to all & it is in fact antivegan takes on veganism that are classist & ableist!).

    • @Ilikefrogs..
      @Ilikefrogs.. 2 года назад +3

      I feel like the white introduced concept of separating veganism from being "plant-based" is rooted in racism and classism. From the group of people who actually invented veganism (mine) to the group of people who appropriated it (yours), let me INFORM you, there is no difference.
      Whether people are eating vegan because they see animals as individuals or because they feel that consuming animal products is unhealthy, at the end of the day, the animals still benefit.
      It's so shocking to me how often white vegans will talk about having respect for animals, but they have so much trouble showing basic respect for other human beings, especially when those human beings are from the culture you appropriated your veganism from.

      @maenad1231 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@wordivore because one is a true statement and one is revisionist history and it’s not good to assume the latter was intentional
      Africans (pre-colonialism/atlantic slave trade) Africans absolutely ate animal sourced foods.
      One Example was aquatic/seafood animals from rivers, streams, shores, lakes etc.
      Just because a group of people usually ate mostly plant based and were eating a notable portion size of any animal-sourced food between once a week -to- once a day doesn’t mean it’s historically accurate to call them pioneers of vegan diets / abstaining from animal sourced foods
      Saying “I think she meant” assumes innocence _(such as misspeaking, being misinformed, used a source she didn’t know perpetuates misconception, being confused about how much you can stretch the definition of a term before it’s untrue etc)_ otherwise we’d have to assume her as guilty _(such as intentionally lying for the sake of the video engagement, willingfully using the term ignorantly & apathetically, disinformation spreading for the sake of an agenda etc)_
      It’s unkind and unfair to assume guilt and malice when there is no evidence of such when someone makes an untrue statement. Politely correcting her and assuming innocence is the right thing to do

    Many African societies were MOSTLY as in 90% vegan. It was rare that they ate meat, unless they were a part of the elites. The overindulgence of meat we now see in Africa and also, for those of us in the States (abroad), plus the large amounts of dairy and eggs that we now consume, were NEVER a part of our initial diets pre-European presence. Too many us are sick because of over nutrition and the excessive amounts of meat and dairy foods we intake daily. Though there was some misinformation in that African societies were completely vegan, but the majority of their lifestyles were in fact vegan and as a result they were healthier, and lived fuller lives. We need to stop advocating for diets that do more to harm us just because we enjoy the taste and the release of immediate gratification. You can eat meat, but let's not forget that veggies and fruits, were some, if not fully, on our plates.

For Price, in fact, those who showed a healthier state among all the peoples who had the opportunity to study were the Dinka, who barely included some marine animals in a regime of plant predominance. 40 years later, Drs. Edward and Peter Williams discovered that the carnivorous tribes who had described the price "disappeared for the most part," the inhabitants of the region having become "peasant farmers" whose diet consisted mainly of "millet, cassava flour, lentils, peanuts, green leafy vegetables like spinach and cabbage, and bananas. I eat watercress, dandelion greens, cilantro, mustard greens, kale, spinach and arugula, I also eat pumkin seeds. I also eat quinoa and fonio. Lots of sweet potato. Lots of oatmeal, lots of bananas and avocados and beans. I have more energy than all my friends. I recommend everyone should try adding whole plant foods to their diet especially greens. We humans used to get our B12 direct from consuming bits of soil on our plants too. Vegans currently get their B12 in a more direct way than nonvegans.

    So you claimed veganism has its roots in India and the Mediterranean and ive done extensive studies on there cultures and yes they have HIGH levels of vegation and fruit in there diets but they where not vegan,they still consumed milk and occasionally ate meat in the Mediterranean India on the other hand is probably the only culture in the world that has come close to a vegan diet but The ayurvedic system of health has included milk in their diets for thousands of years . AFRICA is not vegan either ,yes an ancient times the consumption of fruits and vegetables were much more abundant but this doesn't mean they only ate this way ,Kemet in ancient times consumed high amounts of vegetation and fruits but still consumed a lot of fish and occasionally ate red meat, Ethiopia probably the only place in Africa where you can find straight vegan dishes still eat meat better yet they consume raw meats . the koi ,the san ,the abatwa of the congo and other numerous nomadic hunter-gathering tribes consume meat raw and many of them like most tribes in the Americas during pre-colonial eras never consumed greens or vegetation of any kind and only consumed fruit seasonally .I've been a vegan for 5 years and it's ridiculous to see what people do in order to normalize new ageism , I don't eat meat only because I don't have to in today's society but living in the natural world as far as I've come to understand you will die being a vegan or at least be skin and bones due to the reality that most of the plant life throughout the natural world is poisonous and the body can't break down fiber and eventually would lead to constipation if it was are only source of food,WE ARE NOT GORILLAS ,ELEPHANTS ,TURNTLES ECT ,WE ARE HUMANS that have completely different stomach enzymes and digestive systems then these animals and through the millions of years we have been on this planet we have been omnivores and remain omnivores to this day biologically . I don't doubt at one time the planet was so massively resourceful that we didn't have to eat meat of any kind but in today's society this is not so and it's a world wide reality ,peace .

      What's your point? The point is that those African communities eat vastly less meat. Their natural lifestyle consisted of way less meat than the natural lifestyle of the Europeans, and it's because of what the landscapes required for adapting and surviving. Thriving in Europe necessitated all of the tightly-gripping, environmentally controlling and regimenting, systems that are being moderated today. They were necessary back then and were a blessing to spread to the world, and now it is time to use a different more kind, humane, and natural way of relating to nature and technology.

    Veganism is not Ancient but modern and it is not just a white thing, every race has been vegan in it's short history. Veganism is not for one race but ALL races. As a Vegan you dream of ALL people embracing veganism.
    Eating plants is not the same as veganism that is why people say they are eating more plant based instead of eating more vegan.
    Veganism isn't just about diet, it is about Animal welfare! Veganism started when we decided to put Animals in Factory farms and torture them. Someone who is 100 percent vegan doesn't just eat plants but they abstain from buying and using Animal products such as shoes, animal Entertainment such as, the circus.
    Yeah, so even if every African ate plants it does not mean they are vegan unless they stopped using feathers and animals skins in their clothes.
    There is a difference between eating a plant based diet and being vegan.
    Veganism is about Animal welfare
    Vegetarianism are the ones that don't eat meat but eat more plants. But they still use and eat some animal products.
    Plant based are people than only eat plants but still use or sometime consume animals products maybe, honey or leather.
    Maybe, these Africans were vegetarian or plant based like Indians but not Vegan because look at ancient African clothes, it is not vegan, they used animal skins, feathers and animal fur.

    • @alephmale3171
      @alephmale3171 9 месяцев назад

      That's not a universal fact. Plenty of them also wear/wore woven fabric. And traditionally when they did wear animal hide, it was to be an honoring mark of distinction, and not a normative fashion. You had to earn your lion, tiger, or otherwise-pelt, rendering the practice even more rare and even reverential to the animals. This was also true in America and other indigenous cultures.
      It's also not mysterious why. These cultures preferred to, and could afford to, live with less environmental control, than did people in other climates, and so while they did not have the opportunity to utilize animals as abundantly as Europeans might have, they also didn't need or want to, and morally and practically should not have, because that could practically mean the local extinction of those animals.
      So it's not about saying they were vegan and inherently better morally, but because of how and where they were prone to live, eating way less meat, and having a higher barrier against killing an abundance of animals, was a real practical difference between Southern Hemisphere life and Northern Hemisphere life.

You can still talk about black vegans and whatnot without comparing....like it's just so silly when what matters most is the lives of the animals humans play with. Environmental issues and health is all secondary.
    Sure it matters but you didn't even focus on the most important aspect, all the animals humans breed (artificially inseminate/rape) into existence just to use. How dairy cows are the beef industry, how egg laying chickens are the chicken industry...why vegetarianism is still fully supportive of such an abusive industry that uses and uses these animals until they are worn out, not even reaching their primes before getting sent to be slaughtered. Like okay im fine with you wanting to target a black audience but you need to explain what matters!
