@@jhamelin119 ..for my part, it’s 130’s for the .270 OR a good 150 round, USUALLY 130’s; as for the .308 Win,: 168’s-175’s (ALSO for the SCAR 17 specifically:175 gr mainly). .30-06:150’s. Edited to add: the M1A really seems to like the 150’s more than anything else..
Great choice. My 270 shoots 1/2” groups with 130 Accubonds leaving the barrel a touch under 3000 FPS. Obviously this is a great mulie and antelope load. Especially antelope.
A 130 grain 270 kicks the same as a 130 grain 30-06. Same bullet weight at the same velocity equals the same recoil. But I agree that 130 grain is a great weight for the 270 as well as the 30-06. I shoot 130 grain Barnes TSX out of both for deer and pigs. And I've never noticed a difference in either recoil, trajectory or terminal performance. Both work.
The .270 has been my calibre of choice since 1963 as a 16 year old New Zealand Forestry deer culler. Now 73, I still use that calibre as my main rifle, a 1970 Carl Gustaf.

Tried a bunch from 22-250 to 300 whenever I hunt I always reach for my .270 or 7mm mag 7mm is a lot heavier but my .270 is just right never needed more than 1 shot on any great round.
270win was my 1st hunting rifle. I have several other calibers I enjoy hunting with, but when I’m going after “That Deer” I still grab my 270. I trust it more than any other caliber out there…

You couldn't have took the words out of my mouth anymore it was my first gun as well it's my choice first choice when it comes to deer hunting and I have dropped many deer in their tracks with it and mine is very accurate even with factory ammo
Ron, you can never talk too much about any round that's made. And, speaking of the old girls, I always preferred older babes. They may have lost some sexiness, but they still know how to make a guy happy. Long live the sweet .270 Win.
Rounds and rifles do not age anything like women (or men for that matter). A great round in 1925 is just as pretty as a eighteen year old cheerleader today as it was in 1925. A 270 in the hands of a shooter brings home the venison just as good today as it did on day one.
I took my once in a lifetime Arizona desert bighorn sheep last November at 525 yds with a 270 WIN shooting 136gr Federal Terminal Ascent ammunition. I love the 270 Winchester.
My Grandfather loved this round and reloaded for it. I can see why he really liked this round. With today's modern bullets and low Bc's its even better.
I got my Winchester Model 70 .270 as a graduation present in 1986. It shoots 1 inch 100 yard groups with factory Remington ammo. I have killed dozens of deer with it. She is still my baby.
I'm going for antelope this October and I'm shooting a 1955 Remington 721. I finally worked up a load with a 130gr Berger. I shot a 3/8" group at 100yds. Long live the 270 Winchester!

It’s amazing how Bullets evolved. Every time I hear .270 I think of 130gr bullets. My first rifle I purchased out of college in 1978 was a Remington 700 ADL in .270 with a 3x9 Redfield Widefield. Great cartridge. Thanks Ron, as always your videos are excellent.
My Remington 700 ADL 270Win with a 3×9 Lynx Professional with 150gr for large game as more killing power than the 130gr and it's working better for me with the correct bullet placement for less meat damage.Smaller game like Springbok ,the 130gr is great here in Namibia
Purchased my .270 as my one-gun, do-all cartridge. Loading 110gr bullets for varmints, 140gr ballistic tips for darn near everything else. It's amazing how many people will brush aside the .270 for anything larger muleys, despite it's massive backlog of historical data. .270 Winchester. It takes everything in North America without tearing your shoulder off.
I used my 270 in africa using 140 gr accubonds for kudu, blesbok, golden wildebeest, and even roan. It’s is, in my opinion, the best all around cartridge

The 270 Win is very popular in South Africa, especially in the Eastern Cape. Guided hunter today on the Escarpment of Mpumalanga with 270 Win loaded with 130gr bullets and it had no problems putting a blesbok down.
When I decided to get a new rifle it was because my hunting conditions changed . I did a lot of woods hunting and never really had a need for anything that could do the job out past 100yds . So I hunted with Marlin 336 , I have one in 30-30 and one in 35 Rem, But then I bought a old farm and every time I seen a deer it was some 250 to 300yrds away . Not wanting to just bruise a deer badly I decided to get a new Rifle. So off to the local gun shop I went .This was in 1996 or 97 , The shop owner showed me something that I just fell in love with , A Marlin MR 7 in 270 Win . And I have taking a lot of deer with that rifle , It is great for coydogs too when the need arose and I have gotten quite a few of those out to 500yrds .
Truth is we've had all the cartridges we ever actually "NEEDED" for a hundred years. But it's always fun to see new stuff and yak about the differences. And as long as guys keep it light and in good fun then no problem. Where the issue comes in, and it's usually from younger guys or those that read a lot more than they shoot, is when folks get upset that their favorite round isn't viewed by everyone else as the ultimate cartrdige ever invented. The Creedmore is merely the flavor of the month. A good round, especially for target shooting but nothing special in the hunting world. It's works but so does the .270 and a few dozen more very much like it. No cartridge is going to make a master marksman out of a guy who doesn't practice. No cartridge kills instantly on the first shot every time and no cartridge hits the target every time even when an expert is behind the trigger. There's no magic bullet so to speak just good setup and practice. The Creedmore is just another choice among many. But don't get too upset because that applies to other fanboy favorites like the .300 Blackout as well as long proven vets like the .30-06.
Dave P.. I agree with you .Our bullets have come along g ways with b entertaining tools to make and study them and understand them with ouradvances in our engineering and electronics. Higher BC's allow them to fly farther superer sonic. The 6.5 Creedmoor probably isn't any better or as good as our old Remington 7mm Mag... Except the 6 5 CM doesn't kick as bad..lol But they both shoot real FLAT for a long ways
There IS a giant problem with both the 270 and 7mm Mag. They are both long action cartridges that will not fit in AR10 pattern rifles, and the .270 does not have high BC bullets for long range PRS guys. Why is that important? Because hunters probably shoot less than 200 rounds per year out of their 270s. AR10 guys and PRS guys might shoot thousands of rounds per year. Ergo, 6.5 sells more. As 6.5 sells more, other cartridges will fall by the wayside. Yeah, a 6.5 CM might not do anything for you that a .270 can't, but the opposite is also true. Why worry with antique niche cartridges that offer nothing over the ubiquitous 6.5?

My plane ol factory Rem 700 with a boat paddle stock out shoots every other “higher end” rifle I own. I do not reload. Maybe someday I will, but mine loves the factory federal premium 130 grain ballistic tip round. I hunt white tails and the occasional hog and it’s never let me down. It may not be sexy anymore. “Sexy” sells guns, but the 270 just kills stuff and always will.
There's a reason why the 700 is such a popular rifle. I'll never be able to outshoot mine. It's nice to have 100% confidence in your rifle so you know if you do your part it will get done.
When you have rifle that shoots great, kills game right, stick to it. I have a Rem 700 30-06 just like you described. For years it has been right as rain. Nothing fancy, just a work horse.
I have a Parker Hale 270 for 50 years. It has taken everything from prairie dogs to elk. Lots of Pronghorn. Love it and will pass it down to my grandson when I quit hunting at 90 years old (20 years from now).
I have had a 308 Remington pump I bought in 1959. Super accurate. Kicked like a Blue Mule. Arthritis and age caught up, muzzle brake and recoil pad, recoil like 243.
I’ve come full circle.I started out with my first rifle, a .270, back in 1989. I’ve shot .300 wby, .300 win mag, 7 mm mag, 450 marlin, and .35 whelen( which I love) I’ve picked the Ol war horse .270 back up again, and also purchased a new browning bar safari in .270… it kills just as good as I remember . Pulled it up to my number 1 spot in the gun safe….. .270 Winchester killing stuff since 1925….. 💪
Soon as you mentioned the BAR being a good gun i knew you know absolutely nothing about guns beyond saying some buzzwords. The BAR is a huge piece of crap, a rifle that feels like a shotgun that has 35lb trigger that feels like its dragging a boat anchor through sand

The BAR, which I have two head shots to it’s credit one whitetail and one axis ,and an A bolt that shoots .75 MOA. No need for BUZZ WORDS here pal. @@whiteyfisk9769 man you must really hate a browning bar. I know there are crappy ones out there , my dad and brother both have the new bar hells canyon. They might shoot a 6” group at 100. Mine is a safari , and seems to be better than those . I find them handy while hunting axis deer ,because they run in herds shots are usually 100 or less. You can have fast follow up shots to get a couple on the ground for freezer meat, I do not use them for long range . 300 is about max on what I would feel comfortable with on it. I have other rifles for long range shots. You are entitled to your opinions as I am entitled to mine . Sorry we don’t see eye to eye. And yes I’ve killed my fair share of wild game .I’m not one of those inexperienced hunters who pop off on here, that’s what pi$$ed me off. You assumed something about me that you have no idea of. That's what is so great about the 270, it can hold its own, if not out perform in some way, against almost every other cartridge. It is the very definition of a "venerable cartridge". It can perform as a varmint gun along with a 25.06 but can step up to bigger game. It can take about anything a 30.06 can with less recoil. My Elk buddies take a 270 hunting every year and it works every year they see one. My friend kills deer every year with a 30.06 and every year he complains about how much damage it does to the meat, but he doesn't step down in loads or caliber because he "wants enough gun". Give me the 270. I've never had or heard about accuracy issues with the 270. My Remington Sendero and my old Weatherby Vanguard both shoot sub-m.o.a. with factory loads at 200 yards. Clover leaf's at 100 if the shooter holds steady. I have a number of other rifles in other calibers and when we go hunting, my son grabs that old, second-hand 270 Vanguard every single time, regardless of game, because "it doesn't miss". If they built target 270 rifles with higher twist rates for higher b.c. bullets, imagine what the 270 could do...
@@fedup3582 That's a short action magnum. Same caliber bullet, everything else is different. The .270 is great because it's a necked down 30.06. Be cool to have a high twist barrel put on a .270 action and handload the 6.8 Western bullets. 170 grain bullets in a .270 long action cartridge would be... a 30.06. Nevermind.
My .270 Win in my Remington 700 that I bought in 1983, is a deer-slaying machine. There is no school like "Old School." As my younger friends pull out theri 6.5 Creedmores and other "popular" guns at the range (with their synthetic stocks), they always gawk with respect and wonder when I pull out my venerable walnut-stocked .270 and proceed to school them on the paper targets.

I worked up a hand load years ago for my Sako AIII using a 130 grain AB. Got is down to 5 shots inside .65”. I have tried that same load in (4) other 270’s and they all shoot it under an inch. In my limited experience, I have found the 270 to be very accurate for my needs. I am no professional long range shooter and I try to shoot under 400 yards at game because that is the limit of my expertise but the old 270 works fantastic for me. BTW, i have a couple 6.5’s and so far, they haven’t impressed me enough to replace my 270’s.
I think the 6.5 is getting popular mainly because long distance shooters lighter recoil and the slightly better BC. Though within hunting ranges I would always pick the 270. The only round that has peaked my interest outside the calibers I own is the 277 fury. Will have to see how that goes, will it disappear into obscurity or stay relavent.
I have several 270 that I love.. 260 too (not as common).. I am going to build a precision 270 in a free-floated AR platform now after watching this. Thank you for your wisdom.. I am a 40 year old "old school" gunsmith that is still (and will ever be) soaking up every bit of wisdom and knowledge I can find. Keep it coming Sir.. ballistics are my shortcomings. Edit: I have built several 243s in AR platforms that were superb.. sub moa all day.. but the 270 has my attention.
How'd this turn out? I've got a 20+ year old Savage .270 that I'd love to nestle in one of those Oryx stocks. Just don't want to be "putting lipstick on a pig". LOL!
I had my pick of cartridges when I bought my first hunting rifle five years ago. Considering it’s ballistics, availability, and practicality, I went with the .270 and I still smile at the range when I put the first round through the bullseye every time :-)
The second 270 Winchester I bought myself was a Winchester M-70 XTR. It was around 1978. I put a fixed Leupold M-8 4x scope on it. My uncle said right off the bat when I brought it home that it was a piece of junk and the cartridge was even worst. Yeah, I sighted it in with some 130 gr Norma Loads, it shot well out of the box and even better once I had a bedding job is done and some trigger work. Five shots would fit fine under a quarter, I took that rifle to Newfoundland that fall for Woodland Caribou! I would in time have six rifles so chambered. My uncle was wrong as he was on a lot of things, I would not even go hunting with him anymore after that trip. Those Winchester M-70 XTRs were really very well-made rifles. Over the years I figured out that a 270 really needs a 24-inch barrel. In a 24 inch barrel, I have gotten 3, 200 fps with 130 gr bullets and 3/4 inch groups. If I was going to buy a new one today- I think I would go with a ULA M-24 with a 24" barrel topped with a 2.5 to 8 power Leupold on it and call it good for the rest of my big game hunting days.

I just bought my son a 700 adl in 270. Something a bit more than the 243 hes been using past few years after starting with a 223. After watching this maybe I should keep it myself lol!
24" barrel (700ADL) with RL23, 150 grain Sierra 2960 fps. RL17 with 130 grain bullet 3150fps. Great cartridge. I have killed more with a 270 than any other cartridge. Everything from groundhogs (woodchucks) to coyotes to deer and Pronghorn.
Many yrs ago (19710 I bought a Mannlicher-Schönauer in 270. This featured a full length stock with the butter knife bolt handle It came with a factory target shooting under 1 MOA @100 meters. And that rifle never really changed no matter the weather A truly wonderful little gun
Nice thing about 6.5cm it's very close in performance to a larger caliber like 270 and it fits your semiautos giving you commonality so you don't have to fool around with that old glue horse 308.

You raise a good point: The venerable 6.5x55 "Swedish Mauser" - which has been around even longer than the 270 Winchester (it was first produced in the 1890s) - has been a popular hunting cartridge in Europe (especially Scandinavia) for a very long time, and remains so today. But it has never caught on here in the same way, and that's probably due to the long-standing success of the .270, which does everything the old Swede does, and as well or better, with the exception of having more felt-recoil. The Norwegians, Finns and Swedes use 6.5x55 on medium game and on up to moose, reindeer and caribou, but North American hunters have no need of it, since the 270 already fills that niche so well. About the only time I'd recommend a 6.5mm (.264-cal.) cartridge, is if the kick on the 270 is a bit much for the user. In such cases, one of the 6.5mm cartridges can serve well, or just get some of those reduced recoil loads for the .270 and you are back in business.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 In a country where there are no supplies and having cast 3 cannons of 6.5 x 300 wm (2 schultz larsen and 1 hamerly), it would take 270 that reloading supplies can always be obtained, at one time there were more supplies for 270 than for 7 rem magnum, today there are almost no reloading supplies. I will keep my 270, while there recharge supplies, when I run out of supplies, I will continue with 06/30, there is always that, although sometimes they cost more, anyway. With respect to creedmore, until there are not many supplies in my country and a variety of tips I will put it aside
Nice gun man, my first rifle was a CZ 550 lux in 270 shooting PMP Proamm 130 grain soft nose bullet. Once I learned the gun it was wonderfully accurate. Thanks for the content Ron from South Africa.
My dad shot a Winchester mdl.70 in 270 in the early 50s and he felt it was the best shooting round for hunting deer. Every deer season he always filled his tag with very accurate and ethical kills. Also, this was with iron sights.

I love my .270 remington. Farthest shot on a spanish goat was 700 yards. Goat ran about 20 yards n fell over. Loved it ever since. It was topped with a bushnell 4x12 x 45
I have two 270 rifles, one bolt and one automatic. I have Bushnell scopes on both of them also. Really like both guns , you don't hear much about Bushnell scopes in gun shops or sporting goods stores. Everybody is pushing the "latest & greatest" in scopes also ! But for the money, and clarity I'll take a Bushnell!
Thanks Ron for ANOTHER great video. I studied for a full year before buying my "all around" North American game rifle. It boiled down to 7mm rem mag or the venerable .270. I chose .270 and have been in love with my Rem Mod 7600, 22" barrel with a 1-in-9 twist. I ONLY use 150gr Rem Core Lokt. I have made head shots on groundhog out to 450 yds because I know from years of practice where that pill is going at range. Not bragging, just saying. Latest is not always greatest.
Soon after the .270 came out, Jack O'Connor said it was the best cartridge for Western big game hunts. An awful lot of people today would agree with Jack.

I use the 130 nosler and have yet to have a deer run Once I hit it. Anyway I did buy a 6.5 Creedmoor back before it became popular. I also like that caliber too. I also have the 270 wssm . I have been shooting at 270 since I was 14 years old I have < 1 minute of angle exclusively with a 130 grain bullets stepping up to a 150 grain for elk. I have dropped an elk at 200 yd with one shot with the nozzler partition out of my 270 running 2950' out of the muzzle. I've taken many mule beer and Columbian blacktail with my JC Higgins 270 which is an older ahe firearm both guns are averaged a less than a minute of angle At 100 yds......I just turned 70 and still going strong.....though I have had to adjust the powder and bullets as newer Items are brought to market.....though the rifles still remain sub 1 min. Angle at 100 yds.
My 22yo Remington 700 ADL will shoot Sub MOA all day and if I do my part even go 1/2 MOA. It had a few modifications over the years but it's still a factory action and barrel. My pet loads for our game in Northern Australia is the 130gn Nosler BT or the 150gn Nosler ABLR I get 3,075fps and 2,970fps respectively out of the 22" barrel.
I picked up a walmart special mossberg .270 in about 08 or 09 and have beat the snot out of that gun, and it still works. Took an elk with it in Montana at about 650 yards, and have taken many deer in NC in the 200-400 yard range. Shooting the cheapest 130 gr bullets I can get my hands on usually gets better accuracy than the spendy ballistic tipped bullets.
My moms bf bought one of those mossberg in 30-06 shoots lights out with his corelokts looking to handload some 165 swift Sirocco for him for deer/elk cartridge since he can't find his corelokts locally. Noticed some guns don't like the plastic tipped bullets hoping his likes them
@@jmyoung513 most of my loads are near or at max charges. I load for velocity after I get 1 moa groups for hunting loads. 130 for 270 does seem like sweet spot I am thinking about rebarreling my brothers 270 just so we can shoot 165 accubonds
My hunting buddies and I have shot 270 win for more than 30 years. Take elk with the 150 grains and deer or pronghorns with 130 grains. Use silver tips from Winchester. 👌🏼👌🏼
I have an older Ruger M77 that has shot into 1" at 200 yards, 140gr Sierra pushed by IMR4350. With a 170gr Speer I have broke both shoulders on a 5x5 bull elk, at 200 yards. Very versatile gun.
I was 16 years old on a Junction Texas deer hunt with a 270 Remington 700 an old RedField scope with my own hand loads of IMR 4350 and 130gr. Hornady. First day shot a jack rabbit at about 250yds. Split rabbit into. Good confidence in test with untride rifle. Following 2 days killed 2 deer fell in their tracks. Both shoulder shots. Thing I did not like was much blood shot meat. 270 is a fine accurate cartridge for open country on deer and varmints , As good as Jack said it was.
Wow, great vid! My first deer rifle was a 270. That Remington 700 w Federal ammo is sub moa when I do my part. It's a great round, but I never knew just how good until I watched this video.
I danced around getting a .270 until I found a perfect match to my .30-06. Didnt regret it either. Both those Remingtons are twins, as well as in performance. Factory Federals at approx 0.75" @ 100m. The 06 can put 150gr. sierra handloads into 0.3". Just plain awesome.
For varmints we shoot 204, AR223, deer 308. No looking to purchase a 270 but I couldn’t help but listen to you explain the 270. You really do an excellent job of explaining different cartridges vs. different loads vs. comparable cartridges as your doing in this video. Thanks for taking the time to put this information together and then talk about it. Love the .270. I’ve shot it for years. Love the 6.5 mm Cr, too, so keep the innovations coming. More new stuff, more fun for shooters . . . and more stuff for Ron to educate us on. :-)
You got me to thinking about the reality of "need" in these times of ammo and reloading component shortages. I managed a retail store that sold ammunition for years and came to accept that some cartridges are more relevant than others by virtue of their availability. My list of relevant rifle cartridges: .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, 7mm Remington Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, .30-30 Winchester and .45-70 Government. For carbines you can include the .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum. Anything else is of dubious worth unless you reload and have components for the caliber in question. If you think you "need" anything else you may have to wait a very long time to restock your ammunition supply.
Ron, I love my Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in .270. It is an a- kicker and name taker, if they ever decide to make bench rest rifles and special ammo, it will be damn hard to beat comparing apples to apples. Hope to see you at a show soon.

Ron, I’ve been handloading for my 1953 Model 70 in .270. The rifle is unmodified except for a modern 3-9x40 Burris scope, and a lightened trigger. I’ve worked up a load utilizing the 130 grain SST over IMR 4831 that has given me consistent 3-shot groups under 3/4” at 100 yards. That’s astounding performance from a 70 year old pre-64 M70 as far as I’m concerned. Thank you for your awesome videos. I learn more with every one you make.
I have a 270 in a TC Venture that shoots under a half inch all day. Absolutely love it!!!! Oh yeah factory Hornaday Superformance 130gr sst. I put my reloading dies back in the box.
My buddy and I have been hand loading for over 20 years and he is a .270 man. Trust me, the .270 is VERY accurate if you know how to hand load properly..
I bought a Browning A Bolt in 270 back in 1989. Love the rifle and cartridge. Some malign the 270, but I believe that Mr. Carmichael was right in promoting it. It works very well for everything from varmints to moose. Yes, I know, bullet choice and placement are very important. From my own experience and that of family and hunting friends, it’s very accurate and capable without excessive recoil. My best to all.
The 270 is awesome, flat trajectory, and less kick than a 30-06. I think the 130 grain is a sweet spot for the 270,

I still shoot 150's on the 06, but man, 130's in that .270 are wicked, best deer rifle in my opinion.

Great choice. My 270 shoots 1/2” groups with 130 Accubonds leaving the barrel a touch under 3000 FPS. Obviously this is a great mulie and antelope load. Especially antelope.
A 130 grain 270 kicks the same as a 130 grain 30-06. Same bullet weight at the same velocity equals the same recoil. But I agree that 130 grain is a great weight for the 270 as well as the 30-06. I shoot 130 grain Barnes TSX out of both for deer and pigs. And I've never noticed a difference in either recoil, trajectory or terminal performance. Both work.
The .270 has been my calibre of choice since 1963 as a 16 year old New Zealand Forestry deer culler. Now 73, I still use that calibre as my main rifle, a 1970 Carl Gustaf.

Tried a bunch from 22-250 to 300 whenever I hunt I always reach for my .270 or 7mm mag 7mm is a lot heavier but my .270 is just right never needed more than 1 shot on any great round.

270win was my 1st hunting rifle. I have several other calibers I enjoy hunting with, but when I’m going after “That Deer” I still grab my 270. I trust it more than any other caliber out there…

You couldn't have took the words out of my mouth anymore it was my first gun as well it's my choice first choice when it comes to deer hunting and I have dropped many deer in their tracks with it and mine is very accurate even with factory ammo

Ron, you can never talk too much about any round that's made. And, speaking of the old girls, I always preferred older babes. They may have lost some sexiness, but they still know how to make a guy happy. Long live the sweet .270 Win.
Rounds and rifles do not age anything like women (or men for that matter). A great round in 1925 is just as pretty as a eighteen year old cheerleader today as it was in 1925. A 270 in the hands of a shooter brings home the venison just as good today as it did on day one.
I took my once in a lifetime Arizona desert bighorn sheep last November at 525 yds with a 270 WIN shooting 136gr Federal Terminal Ascent ammunition. I love the 270 Winchester.

My Grandfather loved this round and reloaded for it. I can see why he really liked this round. With today's modern bullets and low Bc's its even better.

I got my Winchester Model 70 .270 as a graduation present in 1986. It shoots 1 inch 100 yard groups with factory Remington ammo. I have killed dozens of deer with it. She is still my baby.

I'm going for antelope this October and I'm shooting a 1955 Remington 721. I finally worked up a load with a 130gr Berger. I shot a 3/8" group at 100yds. Long live the 270 Winchester!

It’s amazing how Bullets evolved. Every time I hear .270 I think of 130gr bullets. My first rifle I purchased out of college in 1978 was a Remington 700 ADL in .270 with a 3x9 Redfield Widefield. Great cartridge. Thanks Ron, as always your videos are excellent.

My Remington 700 ADL 270Win with a 3×9 Lynx Professional with 150gr for large game as more killing power than the 130gr and it's working better for me with the correct bullet placement for less meat damage.Smaller game like Springbok ,the 130gr is great here in Namibia
Purchased my .270 as my one-gun, do-all cartridge. Loading 110gr bullets for varmints, 140gr ballistic tips for darn near everything else. It's amazing how many people will brush aside the .270 for anything larger muleys, despite it's massive backlog of historical data.

I used my 270 in africa using 140 gr accubonds for kudu, blesbok, golden wildebeest, and even roan. It’s is, in my opinion, the best all around cartridge

The 270 Win is very popular in South Africa, especially in the Eastern Cape. Guided hunter today on the Escarpment of Mpumalanga with 270 Win loaded with 130gr bullets and it had no problems putting a blesbok down.

Just the pep talk I needed. I’ve been shooting my 270 for deer bear and elk for 30 years.
To me it’s fairly simple, if you want to shoot heavy bullets go 30-06, if you want to shoot light bullets go 270.
When I decided to get a new rifle it was because my hunting conditions changed . I did a lot of woods hunting and never really had a need for anything that could do the job out past 100yds . So I hunted with Marlin 336 , I have one in 30-30 and one in 35 Rem, But then I bought a old farm and every time I seen a deer it was some 250 to 300yrds away . Not wanting to just bruise a deer badly I decided to get a new Rifle. So off to the local gun shop I went .This was in 1996 or 97 , The shop owner showed me something that I just fell in love with , A Marlin MR 7 in 270 Win . And I have taking a lot of deer with that rifle , It is great for coydogs too when the need arose and I have gotten quite a few of those out to 500yrds .
To paraphrase Forest Gump, The 270 and 130 grain bullets for mulies and antelope go together like peas and carrots. Great video Ron!

Truth is we've had all the cartridges we ever actually "NEEDED" for a hundred years. But it's always fun to see new stuff and yak about the differences. And as long as guys keep it light and in good fun then no problem. Where the issue comes in, and it's usually from younger guys or those that read a lot more than they shoot, is when folks get upset that their favorite round isn't viewed by everyone else as the ultimate cartrdige ever invented. The Creedmore is merely the flavor of the month. A good round, especially for target shooting but nothing special in the hunting world. It's works but so does the .270 and a few dozen more very much like it. No cartridge is going to make a master marksman out of a guy who doesn't practice. No cartridge kills instantly on the first shot every time and no cartridge hits the target every time even when an expert is behind the trigger. There's no magic bullet so to speak just good setup and practice. The Creedmore is just another choice among many. But don't get too upset because that applies to other fanboy favorites like the .300 Blackout as well as long proven vets like the .30-06.

There IS a giant problem with both the 270 and 7mm Mag. They are both long action cartridges that will not fit in AR10 pattern rifles, and the .270 does not have high BC bullets for long range PRS guys. Why is that important? Because hunters probably shoot less than 200 rounds per year out of their 270s. AR10 guys and PRS guys might shoot thousands of rounds per year. Ergo, 6.5 sells more. As 6.5 sells more, other cartridges will fall by the wayside. Yeah, a 6.5 CM might not do anything for you that a .270 can't, but the opposite is also true. Why worry with antique niche cartridges that offer nothing over the ubiquitous 6.5?

My plane ol factory Rem 700 with a boat paddle stock out shoots every other “higher end” rifle I own. I do not reload. Maybe someday I will, but mine loves the factory federal premium 130 grain ballistic tip round. I hunt white tails and the occasional hog and it’s never let me down. It may not be sexy anymore. “Sexy” sells guns, but the 270 just kills stuff and always will.
There's a reason why the 700 is such a popular rifle. I'll never be able to outshoot mine. It's nice to have 100% confidence in your rifle so you know if you do your part it will get done.

When you have rifle that shoots great, kills game right, stick to it. I have a Rem 700 30-06 just like you described. For years it has been right as rain. Nothing fancy, just a work horse.
I have a Parker Hale 270 for 50 years. It has taken everything from prairie dogs to elk. Lots of Pronghorn. Love it and will pass it down to my grandson when I quit hunting at 90 years old (20 years from now).
My 270 served me well in Africa, taking all the plains game I came for, from impala to kudu. Used 150 grain bullets. I did use a 375 for Cape Buffalo!

I have had a 308 Remington pump I bought in 1959. Super accurate. Kicked like a Blue Mule. Arthritis and age caught up, muzzle brake and recoil pad, recoil like 243.

I’ve shot .300 wby, .300 win mag, 7 mm mag, 450 marlin, and .35 whelen( which I love) I’ve picked the Ol war horse .270 back up again, and also purchased a new browning bar safari in .270… it kills just as good as I remember . Pulled it up to my number 1 spot in the gun safe….. .270 Winchester killing stuff since 1925….. 💪
Soon as you mentioned the BAR being a good gun i knew you know absolutely nothing about guns beyond saying some buzzwords. The BAR is a huge piece of crap, a rifle that feels like a shotgun that has 35lb trigger that feels like its dragging a boat anchor through sand

Mine is a safari , and seems to be better than those . I find them handy while hunting axis deer ,because they run in herds shots are usually 100 or less. You can have fast follow up shots to get a couple on the ground for freezer meat, I do not use them for long range . 300 is about max on what I would feel comfortable with on it. I have other rifles for long range shots. You are entitled to your opinions as I am entitled to mine . Sorry we don’t see eye to eye. And yes I’ve killed my fair share of wild game .I’m not one of those inexperienced hunters who pop off on here, that’s what pi$$ed me off. You assumed something about me that you have no idea of. Sounds like you know your rifle and its strengths and weaknesses, and thats more than most hunters can say.
That's what is so great about the 270, it can hold its own, if not out perform in some way, against almost every other cartridge. It is the very definition of a "venerable cartridge". It can perform as a varmint gun along with a 25.06 but can step up to bigger game. It can take about anything a 30.06 can with less recoil. My Elk buddies take a 270 hunting every year and it works every year they see one. My friend kills deer every year with a 30.06 and every year he complains about how much damage it does to the meat, but he doesn't step down in loads or caliber because he "wants enough gun". Give me the 270. I've never had or heard about accuracy issues with the 270. My Remington Sendero and my old Weatherby Vanguard both shoot sub-m.o.a. with factory loads at 200 yards. Clover leaf's at 100 if the shooter holds steady. I have a number of other rifles in other calibers and when we go hunting, my son grabs that old, second-hand 270 Vanguard every single time, regardless of game, because "it doesn't miss". If they built target 270 rifles with higher twist rates for higher b.c. bullets, imagine what the 270 could do...

Be cool to have a high twist barrel put on a .270 action and handload the 6.8 Western bullets. 170 grain bullets in a .270 long action cartridge would be... a 30.06. Nevermind.
IF your friend would spend some time at the range he could take head shots , that don't damage meat , so he must be a meat hunter not a marksman !
My .270 Win in my Remington 700 that I bought in 1983, is a deer-slaying machine. There is no school like "Old School." As my younger friends pull out theri 6.5 Creedmores and other "popular" guns at the range (with their synthetic stocks), they always gawk with respect and wonder when I pull out my venerable walnut-stocked .270 and proceed to school them on the paper targets.
I have the same 270 I inherited from my dad it has a redfield scope on it from the same 1980s.

With guns and ammo, they've been trying to reinvent the wheel. Even the 30 06 which is over 100 years old is still king of the hill.
I worked up a hand load years ago for my Sako AIII using a 130 grain AB. Got is down to 5 shots inside .65”. I have tried that same load in (4) other 270’s and they all shoot it under an inch. In my limited experience, I have found the 270 to be very accurate for my needs. I am no professional long range shooter and I try to shoot under 400 yards at game because that is the limit of my expertise but the old 270 works fantastic for me. BTW, i have a couple 6.5’s and so far, they haven’t impressed me enough to replace my 270’s.

I think the 6.5 is getting popular mainly because long distance shooters lighter recoil and the slightly better BC. Though within hunting ranges I would always pick the 270. The only round that has peaked my interest outside the calibers I own is the 277 fury. Will have to see how that goes, will it disappear into obscurity or stay relavent.
I have several 270 that I love.. 260 too (not as common).. I am going to build a precision 270 in a free-floated AR platform now after watching this. Thank you for your wisdom.. I am a 40 year old "old school" gunsmith that is still (and will ever be) soaking up every bit of wisdom and knowledge I can find. Keep it coming Sir.. ballistics are my shortcomings.
Edit: I have built several 243s in AR platforms that were superb.. sub moa all day.. but the 270 has my attention.

I had my pick of cartridges when I bought my first hunting rifle five years ago. Considering it’s ballistics, availability, and practicality, I went with the .270 and I still smile at the range when I put the first round through the bullseye every time :-)
If you can't kill it with a .270. RUN, run very fast. The .270 is the best thing that ever happened to the 30-06. The 25-06 is a very good one too.
The second 270 Winchester I bought myself was a Winchester M-70 XTR. It was around 1978. I put a fixed Leupold M-8 4x scope on it. My uncle said right off the bat when I brought it home that it was a piece of junk and the cartridge was even worst. Yeah, I sighted it in with some 130 gr Norma Loads, it shot well out of the box and even better once I had a bedding job is done and some trigger work. Five shots would fit fine under a quarter, I took that rifle to Newfoundland that fall for Woodland Caribou! I would in time have six rifles so chambered. My uncle was wrong as he was on a lot of things, I would not even go hunting with him anymore after that trip. Those Winchester M-70 XTRs were really very well-made rifles. Over the years I figured out that a 270 really needs a 24-inch barrel. In a 24 inch barrel, I have gotten 3, 200 fps with 130 gr bullets and 3/4 inch groups. If I was going to buy a new one today- I think I would go with a ULA M-24 with a 24" barrel topped with a 2.5 to 8 power Leupold on it and call it good for the rest of my big game hunting days.

I just bought my son a 700 adl in 270. Something a bit more than the 243 hes been using past few years after starting with a 223. After watching this maybe I should keep it myself lol!
24" barrel (700ADL) with RL23, 150 grain Sierra 2960 fps. RL17 with 130 grain bullet 3150fps. Great cartridge. I have killed more with a 270 than any other cartridge. Everything from groundhogs (woodchucks) to coyotes to deer and Pronghorn.
Many yrs ago (19710 I bought a Mannlicher-Schönauer in 270. This featured a full length stock with the butter knife bolt handle It came with a factory target shooting under 1 MOA @100 meters. And that rifle never really changed no matter the weather A truly wonderful little gun

Nice thing about 6.5cm it's very close in performance to a larger caliber like 270 and it fits your semiautos giving you commonality so you don't have to fool around with that old glue horse 308.

You raise a good point: The venerable 6.5x55 "Swedish Mauser" - which has been around even longer than the 270 Winchester (it was first produced in the 1890s) - has been a popular hunting cartridge in Europe (especially Scandinavia) for a very long time, and remains so today. But it has never caught on here in the same way, and that's probably due to the long-standing success of the .270, which does everything the old Swede does, and as well or better, with the exception of having more felt-recoil. The Norwegians, Finns and Swedes use 6.5x55 on medium game and on up to moose, reindeer and caribou, but North American hunters have no need of it, since the 270 already fills that niche so well. About the only time I'd recommend a 6.5mm (.264-cal.) cartridge, is if the kick on the 270 is a bit much for the user. In such cases, one of the 6.5mm cartridges can serve well, or just get some of those reduced recoil loads for the .270 and you are back in business.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 In a country where there are no supplies and having cast 3 cannons of 6.5 x 300 wm (2 schultz larsen and 1 hamerly), it would take 270 that reloading supplies can always be obtained, at one time there were more supplies for 270 than for 7 rem magnum, today there are almost no reloading supplies. I will keep my 270, while there recharge supplies, when I run out of supplies, I will continue with 06/30, there is always that, although sometimes they cost more, anyway. With respect to creedmore, until there are not many supplies in my country and a variety of tips I will put it aside

I love 270 it's the 1st cartridge I used to go hunting with.
My dad shot a Winchester mdl.70 in 270 in the early 50s and he felt it was the best shooting round for hunting deer. Every deer season he always filled his tag with very accurate and ethical kills. Also, this was with iron sights.
There's guys out there that have such eagle eyes that scopes aren't needed. Paul Harrell here on RUclips is one of them.

I have a custom built 270 that was built in 1950. Great rifle, great cartridge. Does everything I need to do. 130 grain is my favorite.
Some folks don't realize sometimes you just get it right in life and there's little to no room for improvement
I love my .270 remington. Farthest shot on a spanish goat was 700 yards. Goat ran about 20 yards n fell over. Loved it ever since. It was topped with a bushnell 4x12 x 45
I have two 270 rifles, one bolt and one automatic. I have Bushnell scopes on both of them also. Really like both guns , you don't hear much about Bushnell scopes in gun shops or sporting goods stores. Everybody is pushing the "latest & greatest" in scopes also !
But for the money, and clarity I'll take a Bushnell!

Thanks Ron for ANOTHER great video. I studied for a full year before buying my "all around" North American game rifle. It boiled down to 7mm rem mag or the venerable .270. I chose .270 and have been in love with my Rem Mod 7600, 22" barrel with a 1-in-9 twist. I ONLY use 150gr Rem Core Lokt. I have made head shots on groundhog out to 450 yds because I know from years of practice where that pill is going at range. Not bragging, just saying. Latest is not always greatest.

Soon after the .270 came out, Jack O'Connor said it was the best cartridge for Western big game hunts. An awful lot of people today would agree with Jack.

Once again Ron thank you for your input on the 270. I have been shooting my 270 since I was 16 that was 40 years ago lol. I still have her and love her. I use the 130 nosler and have yet to have a deer run Once I hit it. Anyway I did buy a 6.5 Creedmoor back before it became popular. I also like that caliber too. I also have the 270 wssm . These days because of where I hunt I use my 358 . You are truly a great person and I appreciate your educational videos so cudos to you and keep the videos rolling
I have been shooting at 270 since I was 14 years old I have < 1 minute of angle exclusively with a 130 grain bullets stepping up to a 150 grain for elk. I have dropped an elk at 200 yd with one shot with the nozzler partition out of my 270 running 2950' out of the muzzle. I've taken many mule beer and Columbian blacktail with my JC Higgins 270 which is an older ahe firearm both guns are averaged a less than a minute of angle At 100 yds......I just turned 70 and still going strong.....though I have had to adjust the powder and bullets as newer Items are brought to market.....though the rifles still remain sub 1 min. Angle at 100 yds.
Love the 270! I and the hunters I know here in South Africa shoot sub min with our 270 as we reload for them. Its a great cartridge!
My .270 Win is still my favorite. Mine loves the 140g. bullets. Very accurate and always kills.
My 22yo Remington 700 ADL will shoot Sub MOA all day and if I do my part even go 1/2 MOA. It had a few modifications over the years but it's still a factory action and barrel. My pet loads for our game in Northern Australia is the 130gn Nosler BT or the 150gn Nosler ABLR I get 3,075fps and 2,970fps respectively out of the 22" barrel.

It is my got to for deer and elk the 130 gn has never let me down
I picked up a walmart special mossberg .270 in about 08 or 09 and have beat the snot out of that gun, and it still works. Took an elk with it in Montana at about 650 yards, and have taken many deer in NC in the 200-400 yard range. Shooting the cheapest 130 gr bullets I can get my hands on usually gets better accuracy than the spendy ballistic tipped bullets.
My moms bf bought one of those mossberg in 30-06 shoots lights out with his corelokts looking to handload some 165 swift Sirocco for him for deer/elk cartridge since he can't find his corelokts locally. Noticed some guns don't like the plastic tipped bullets hoping his likes them
@@tylarhaugan7908 I would load them up as slow as you can to begin with. The slow ones seem to group better.
@@jmyoung513 most of my loads are near or at max charges. I load for velocity after I get 1 moa groups for hunting loads. 130 for 270 does seem like sweet spot I am thinking about rebarreling my brothers 270 just so we can shoot 165 accubonds

I'm an '06 fanboy, but I have to give the .270 its due. Mr O'Connor did great work with it, and it's by no means irrelevant today.
I like the mid cal hunting rounds, .270, .308, 30-06. What else would you ever really need??
My hunting buddies and I have shot 270 win for more than 30 years. Take elk with the 150 grains and deer or pronghorns with 130 grains. Use silver tips from Winchester. 👌🏼👌🏼

I have an older Ruger M77 that has shot into 1" at 200 yards, 140gr Sierra pushed by IMR4350. With a 170gr Speer I have broke both shoulders on a 5x5 bull elk, at 200 yards. Very versatile gun.
I was 16 years old on a Junction Texas deer hunt with a 270 Remington 700 an old RedField scope with my own hand loads of IMR 4350 and 130gr. Hornady. First day shot a jack rabbit at about 250yds. Split rabbit into. Good confidence in test with untride rifle. Following 2 days killed 2 deer fell in their tracks. Both shoulder shots. Thing I did not like was much blood shot meat. 270 is a fine accurate cartridge for open country on deer and varmints , As good as Jack said it was.
Wow, great vid! My first deer rifle was a 270. That Remington 700 w Federal ammo is sub moa when I do my part. It's a great round, but I never knew just how good until I watched this video.

I danced around getting a .270 until I found a perfect match to my .30-06. Didnt regret it either. Both those Remingtons are twins, as well as in performance. Factory Federals at approx 0.75" @ 100m. The 06 can put 150gr. sierra handloads into 0.3". Just plain awesome.
I am in the same position as you, I use a 270 light barrel and assemble a bull rifle on 06/30 as I couldn't get bull on 270 winchester
For varmints we shoot 204, AR223, deer 308. No looking to purchase a 270 but I couldn’t help but listen to you explain the 270.
You really do an excellent job of explaining different cartridges vs. different loads vs. comparable cartridges as your doing in this video.

You got me to thinking about the reality of "need" in these times of ammo and reloading component shortages. I managed a retail store that sold ammunition for years and came to accept that some cartridges are more relevant than others by virtue of their availability. My list of relevant rifle cartridges: .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, 7mm Remington Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, .30-30 Winchester and .45-70 Government. For carbines you can include the .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum. Anything else is of dubious worth unless you reload and have components for the caliber in question. If you think you "need" anything else you may have to wait a very long time to restock your ammunition supply.

Ron, I love my Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in .270. It is an a- kicker and name taker, if they ever decide to make bench rest rifles and special ammo, it will be damn hard to beat comparing apples to apples. Hope to see you at a show soon.

Ron, I’ve been handloading for my 1953 Model 70 in .270. The rifle is unmodified except for a modern 3-9x40 Burris scope, and a lightened trigger. I’ve worked up a load utilizing the 130 grain SST over IMR 4831 that has given me consistent 3-shot groups under 3/4” at 100 yards. That’s astounding performance from a 70 year old pre-64 M70 as far as I’m concerned. Thank you for your awesome videos. I learn more with every one you make.
My favorite Deer hunting guns is the 30-30 and the 270, It just depends on where I am hunting.
I have a 270 in a TC Venture that shoots under a half inch all day. Absolutely love it!!!! Oh yeah factory Hornaday Superformance 130gr sst. I put my reloading dies back in the box.
My buddy and I have been hand loading for over 20 years and he is a .270 man. Trust me, the .270 is VERY accurate if you know how to hand load properly..

I bought a Browning A Bolt in 270 back in 1989. Love the rifle and cartridge. Some malign the 270, but I believe that Mr. Carmichael was right in promoting it. It works very well for everything from varmints to moose. Yes, I know, bullet choice and placement are very important. From my own experience and that of family and hunting friends, it’s very accurate and capable without excessive recoil. My best to all.
