Used it for 25 years with Average 7 deer a year. Never had an issue and all were pass through other than one large fallow I hit with a 95 SST which hit the shoulder rather than behind and blew apart. That said deer still dropped with 30 yards dead
Good video the 243win is an outstanding cartridge that 100 grain Nosler partition with reloader 26 at 3160fps is just flat out deer medicine come on nosler let’s see that 100gr Accubond let’s go
Yes please share Reloader 26 is no place to be found, you would think Alliant would be producing it by the semi loads as many people that are wanting it
For my first big game rifle I wanted good value and a caliber that could handle just about everything North America could offer. I bought a Savage package gun in 30-06 and never looked back.. I've taken most of my many deer and one Maine moose with that gun, and although there were misses (few), any time I found blood, I found my deer. I still use this rifle and it still drives tacks. I acquired a 243 along the way, and I have taken some deer with it, including my first ever legal buck, but I'm sorry to say I have also hit deer with it (well, only one that I can think of) and lost blood and never found the deer. I hope he/she recovered.
Please check your facts . The 244 Remington came out with a 1 in12 twist , a few years later they reintroduced it as the 6mm Remington with a 1 in 9 twist . The 243 win was so far ahead in sales that the 6mm Remington never caught up & is now a reloaders cartridge. Nothing wrong with either of them but I've got a 25-06 sporter weight rifle that shoots 1/2 inch groups , so I sold my 6mm to a high school buddy way back in the early 80s . For varmints , predators and medium-sized game it's hard to beat the 25-06 . I've also had 250savage , 257 Roberts and a 257wby . They all do a good job on deer . Enjoy your 243win there's nothing wrong with it ! Cheers man
244 Remington is a 6mm Remington. Just because I talked positively about the 243 Win... doesn't mean I'm a fan of it. I will always pick my 257 Weatherby over the 243 Win
The 243 is fine for those little South Texas Whitetail Bucks and Pronghorn. But, it’ll just bounce off those big Alberta bucks that have black eyes and missing teeth and play hockey for the Oilers. Just kidding! The 243 is a great choice for Whitetails big and small.
Remington actually came out with the .244 that had a slower twist. Winchester came out with the 243 and I agree it's a great cartridge. When Remington found out the .244 wouldn't stabilize lighter bullets they came out with the faster twist 6mm.
.243 is a good one. Some companies are finally putting 1-7.5 twist barrels on them to shoot some of the heavy monos and target bullets. I like the AI version myself, no point in having that long shoulder anymore. .243 AI beats the 6mm creed with the heavier bullets. I think the 243 lost in the modern world is because people went to the 260 then to the creed for target shooting. Then slowed the 6mm down to fall in line with PRS rules, that’s where the dasher, Br, and GT come in. Also the .243 and .243 ai have bad barrel life compared to the parent of the .308 for target shooting. Still a great hunting cartridge, but like a 1-7.5 twist.
I would argue that the 243 is the ultmate coyote rifle but it isn't the best choice for a youth deer rifle, it is more of an experts gun, I concider it a scalpel where as larger diameter bullets are more of a hammer. You can kill quickly with a scaplel but you have to know exactly where to cut, where as a hammer is going to impose massive peripheraI damage allowing some degree of leanincy. I recomend the 7mm-08 to everone who asks me what cartridge to get their kid for a first deer gun. It has been my experiance that I have recovered more first deer shot with a 7mm-08 or bigger than I have with the 243 dont take it wrong its a fine cartridge, just not the ultimate whitetail cartridge.
@ReloadingWeatherby no problem bud, in the future maybe you should consult with me before publishing such embarrising content, after all, that's what i'm here for....😉🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@ReloadingWeatherby it was a joke not a dong, dont take it so hard... i dont expect you to agree with me. I simply appreciate your willingness to interact with your followers. While I mostly agree with you I thought you might appreciate knowing the experiance of someone who has taken over 50 deer with over 20 calibers and hosted over 10 first time hunters shooting their first deer.
@@matthewbutcher203 My comment was not meant to offend either. You have an extremely solid argument for 7mm-08 being the best Whitetail cartridge. At the end of the day there are a lot of "best" deer cartridges. There are almost no wrong answers.
🤠 Austin, "Unknown Munitions" in Post Falls Idaho is Loading Their 270 Winchester Ammunition With The 165 Grain Nosler ABLR's! They Are Using IMR 4955 Enduron Powder and Getting 2,925 ft/s With Factory Ammunition! 🥳
The 6mm didn't come out with a slow twist rate. That cartridge was the 244 Remington with 1/12 twist rate, which later became the 6mm ater it was produced with a 1/10 twist rate.
It's many people's first deer rifle and last deer rifle.....people buy one for their kids with plans to use it later in life as they age. I've seen this first hand working behind the gun counter.
I don’t know if your going to read this but I just bought a 300 prc. I want to hunt with lighter grain weight for caliber aka 175 terminal ascent, 168 Berger, 168 TTSX. Could you build a load to see how it performs. There is no one that has information on it
Tried out the 100 gr. PPU 243 in my Ruger 243 and it is somewhat hotter load than the Remington factory ammunition as well as the winchester power points and it is the most accurate of the three. Extreme spread of 3 rounds was only 21 fps and doing 2880 fps from my 22 inch barrel. It's hotter than the USA top two loads and it is a little more accurate in my GO WILD 243.
I love how people bash the 243 and then hunt with a 223 Rem, 22 ARC, or even a 6.5 Creedmoor for deer. The 243 Win is a great cartridge for 50lb-200lb thin skinned game. I hear people talk about the higher BC 6.5 bullets and the better trajectory of a PRC, but if people were really honest, most casual deer hunters aren't shooting past 300 yards. Yes, a lot of people want to say that they hunt "long range", but I've also seen way too many wounded animals that never get recovered or suffer needlessly because someone didn't make the shot. People don't show those on RUclips or talk about them, but we know it happens. I've seen it on my ranch. If you can't take a whitetail with a 243, you need to seriously evaluate why you hunt. My suspicion is ego.
The 243 will always be a part of my life. I have burnt out 2 barrels so far and Im working on the third. The current rifle is a Winchester Model 670 with a wood stock that I sanded down and refinished. It has a magnum sporter (.670 muzzle) 24" X-Caliber Chrome-Moly barrel with 1:7" Twist - 5R rifling. It will comfortably shoot 105 class bullets over 3100fps or the 90gr CX over 3300fps with H4350. And like all my rifles, it hammers. I've killed more deer with a 243 with one shot than any other rifle I own. And my current longest confirmed prairie dog kill was actually a double, with my last 243 at 940 yards on the second shot. It's an amazing cartridge and gives nothing up to the other 6mm's in terms of long range performance. If you don't believe it, look up John Whidden. He won the 1000 yard High Power National Championship 6 times...with a 243 Winchester! Not an Ackley, not a Dasher, not a GT. Just a vanilla, plain Jane 243! It doesn't matter how many fancy high steppin 6mm's come out. The 243 Winchester will NEVER die.
243 is my favorite....but at 300 yards on a big Kansas buck....270 or similar is a better choice.....but everything my .243 has touched ends up in the freezer.....Im a meat hunter so usually does inside of 250.....
Never used a 243, ever. I have a lefty 243 still in box never seen daylight. Honestly I don't know what I'd use it for as I mainly use a 270win or 308win for hunting.
🤔 I Am Curious As To What GRT Says About Another "Compressed 270 Load" (Last Time We Talked About N570 powder)? According To Quickloads, 66.6 grains of Reloader 33 (112%) Will Push The 180 grain Nosler ABLR Out at 2,802 ft/s! And, A Non-Compressed Load of 57.9 grains of Reloader 26 Will Push That Bullet Out At 2,764 Ft/s! How Does That Compare To What GRT Says? 👀
@@ReloadingWeatherby 😂 You Need To "Pass That Information on To Alaskan Ballistics", As He Desperately Clings On To His "Short Lived" 6.5 prc Ever So Tightly! 😜
But you don't need a 300 wby just to kill a deer, and you sure don't need a 180 grain bullet that might not even expand on a light skinned deer due to the jacket thickness. You do have a great elk round though!

Biggest buck i ever seen alive fell over instantly to a 100 gr rem corlokt out of a 243 i dont use one but i own some the kids have killed alot of deer with em even with the 80 gr psp
I've got a .243, but when it comes to Midwestern and Texas whitetails, they get a healthy dose of '06 handloaded with Speer SP bullets and IMR 4350, administered from my Remington 7400 Woodsmaster semiautomatic rifle. Never met one yet that scoffed at that medicine. Instead, they all wind up as steaks, chops, and burger. 😅
@ wouldn’t the seating depth of the high bc bullets reduce case capacity in the 243 or am I misunderstanding something? Bullet intrusion of the longer high bc bullets reduces usable case capacity to 52-53gr, the same as the 6CM.
And Remington didnt learn their lesson. They created the .260 Rem, and the twist rates were too slow. By the time they figured it out, 6.5 CM became king
;Reloading Weatherby, "...also, no recoil to the .243 Winchester..." Well, not LITERALLY . My pelletgun has recoil. And so does my slingshot. Low recoil may be more accurate. Or a little recoil . . . ☆
243 is the smallest legal cartridge we are allowed to use down here on deer. Lots of guys and girls and young hunters use it, from my experience it’s a beautiful cartridge to use on the doe, however a mature fallow buck is a complete different beast and the 243 is mediocre at best.
@@kdean8129 lights out on all big game! That’s a big call, all hunting situations are different and distances vary by a lot in some areas, yes you can sometimes get real close in some situations, hence people using spears and bows! The 243 Winchester is far from a big game cartridge.
You said that it’s been a popular cartridge for years. Reason is people push it. First kids deer gun 243. Don’t like recoil 243. Don’t want a heavy gun 243. Want ammunition everywhere 243. Bahhh I’ve watched many videos for best deer cartridges and the 243 makes the list a lot. The only difference between them talking about all the cartridges is that the 243 always and I mean always gets a disclaimer great round out to 300 yards BUT make sure it’s a broadside and DO NOT hit the shoulder. Quartering away is good NOT quartering towards to at 200 yards. frontal shots is a NO go. These are the comments I have heard on the videos. When you start adding in all the donts and do nots it’s no longer a good option. When you are shooting deer that weight 350+ on the hoof it’s no longer viable. Antelope and smaller 200 lbs or small it’s feasible.
FYI, Do a little research, and you will find 243 win has taken as much game as the 30-30 ,30-06 & 270 on pronghorn , whitetail , mule deer , pigs and Elk . My girls every year take Elk with 243 101gr hammer hunters . Most of the time we get a complete pass through on Elk believe it or not . Now we don't shoot past 150-200yrds. To be honest maybe 50% of hunters shoot past 300yrds and 20% shoot 400-600yrds and 5% shoot beyond 600-1000yrds. People really under estimate the power of the 243 win and 25-06 . I have shot Buffalo cows with one shot run less that 100yrds . Here's the key shot placement is everything. You take out the heart or lungs it's over. Fred Bear took a 12 ton bull elephant with a recurve bow first in history in the 70's . Shot placement matter's . Look at all the hunters using PCP air rifles with less than 400 Foot pounds taking deer . God bless you and your family God-bless America 🇺🇸 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱
I wish you RUclipsrs/GunTubers would stop with the comparisons using apples and oranges. Use the same grain weight projectile for each of the cartridges in your comparisons. 55 gr across the board. The 22-250 uses it and is legal for deer in some states. There is a 55 gr bullet for the 204, but not sure if it’s legal because of bullet diameter. This comparison is total BS.
I did a comparison exactly as you requested when I compared 30-06 vs 270 Win with both 130 gr bullets. People hated it... because of you're going to compare cartridges of different caliber you need to go off of b.c. or sectional density.
@ the “use of bc and sectional density” comment must be coming from paper puncher crowd. If you are going to compare rounds for hunting application (ie deer hunting) then the comparison should be made with rounds that are legal (caliber, bullet weight) to use. Comparing varmint rounds and deer rounds is apples and oranges. Bc if that is what “the internet” wants why not compare a 22 short with 50 BMG. They both will kill squirrels but not elk. I don’t know why everyone, lot of RUclipsrs included, are hung up on all the numbers, data, and super fast velocity. I’m a hand loader and have been for 35 years. I know my load velocities, and more importantly how rifles shoot at actual distances. I don’t use a chart. I believe a “slow hit” is better than a “fast miss” any day.
@@jamesdaniel6081 I was never comparing the 243 Win vs 22-250 Rem for deer. Why on earth would I use a 55 gr bullet in 243 Win on deer? They are almost all varmint bullets at that weight. I know you are focused on what the 22-250 Rem can do with a 55 gr. But according to you we have to use a 55 gr bullet in the 243 Win.
@ actually a 55 to 58 gr 6mm projectile is wonderful on whitetail. (I use 50 gr 22-250 on hogs) I digress. What I’m saying is if you compare cartridges, compare them with the same weight projectiles across the board. Don’t compare a 55 gr to a 50 gr or a 32 gr. Dont compare cartridges that won’t or were not designed to shoot the weight class projectiles. That is where the apples to oranges is. To me a better comparison would have been 243, 22-250,223 varmints using 55 gr, 243, 308, 7-08, 6.5 creed for deer using 100 gr. (Just my opinion. Good debate/discussion)

Used it for 25 years with Average 7 deer a year. Never had an issue and all were pass through other than one large fallow I hit with a 95 SST which hit the shoulder rather than behind and blew apart. That said deer still dropped with 30 yards dead

Where do you find Reloder 26? Must have a stash, because the ammo companies and Uncle Sam pretty much use it all these days.
Yes please share Reloader 26 is no place to be found, you would think Alliant would be producing it by the semi loads as many people that are wanting it
Got my first buck with 243 100g hornady american whitetail. Deer went 10 yards double lung
I love the 243 win. Severely underrated cartridge in my opinion. From black bears to prairie dogs, the 243 can do it all.
Thanks for watching
I have two 243 win
One a model #11 1/9.25 twist
One a ruger rpr with a 1/7.5 twist
Love them both
The 243 is fine for those little South Texas Whitetail Bucks and Pronghorn. But, it’ll just bounce off those big Alberta bucks that have black eyes and missing teeth and play hockey for the Oilers. Just kidding! The 243 is a great choice for Whitetails big and small.
Excellent cartridge..
Remington actually came out with the .244 that had a slower twist. Winchester came out with the 243 and I agree it's a great cartridge. When Remington found out the .244 wouldn't stabilize lighter bullets they came out with the faster twist 6mm.
The 243 is my favorite deer cartridge puts um down every time under rated by many
Thanks for your comment
.243 is a good one.
Winchester 100gr soft points work well on south Texas deer never had one run
I didn't know you could get 120-grain 6mm bullets now, Where can I get them?
I might be wrong about a 120 gr... sometimes I ramble and say things I don't mean.

It was a rem 244 with the wrong twist 6mm has same twist as the 243 I'm not saying anything wrong with the 243 but the 6mm out shoots the 243 in mv
The 6mm didn't come out with a slow twist rate. That cartridge was the 244 Remington with 1/12 twist rate, which later became the 6mm ater it was produced with a 1/10 twist rate.

What bullets are those cartridges loaded with?

It's many people's first deer rifle and last deer rifle.....people buy one for their kids with plans to use it later in life as they age. I've seen this first hand working behind the gun counter.
I don’t know if your going to read this but I just bought a 300 prc. I want to hunt with lighter grain weight for caliber aka 175 terminal ascent, 168 Berger, 168 TTSX. Could you build a load to see how it performs. There is no one that has information on it
Download Gordon's Reloading Tool. It's free and it can really help you figure out where to start and stop.
Keep up the good work..................

Faster twist and longer distance to the lands would be awesome
Why are you holding a 243 round with the projectile sticking way out like it’s a 6.5CM?
Why not? Gotta load it the way the rifle likes it.

GRT says 67.5 gr of N570 would get you 3000 FPS with the 165 ABLR.

Ok let’s see 243 with a fast twist and an ABLR or ELD, that case capacity advantage will disappear, essentially just becoming an expensive 6CM
No it wouldn't... case capacity is case capacity. 243 Win has more, it will be faster than a 6mm Creed. Not saying it will be better... just faster
@ wouldn’t the seating depth of the high bc bullets reduce case capacity in the 243 or am I misunderstanding something? Bullet intrusion of the longer high bc bullets reduces usable case capacity to 52-53gr, the same as the 6CM.
People really sleep on this cartridge. It shoots as flat, if not flatter, than 7mm Rem Mag and .270 Win at 500 yards.
I don't understand the point of 6mmCM existence when fast twist 243's exist.
I could be wrong... but I think the 6mm CM came out before any fast twist 243 Winchester
And Remington didnt learn their lesson. They created the .260 Rem, and the twist rates were too slow. By the time they figured it out, 6.5 CM became king
243 Winchester vs 6mm Creedmoor!
I've done that video!
;Reloading Weatherby,
"...also, no recoil to the .243 Winchester..."
Well, not LITERALLY .
Thanks for sharing. 257 Weatherby I'm sure handles any deer from down under
Key word was hunting. If you get in close the 243 is like lights out on all big game.
@@kdean8129 lights out on all big game! That’s a big call, all hunting situations are different and distances vary by a lot in some areas, yes you can sometimes get real close in some situations, hence people using spears and bows! The 243 Winchester is far from a big game cartridge.

Bahhh
I’ve watched many videos for best deer cartridges and the 243 makes the list a lot.
Thanks for commenting
Just think about something , there always comparing the 243 to everything else , that sould tell you something

Too late for who?

@ The point is people call it 6.5“ needmore” while saying the 243 is a good deer cartridge.
6.5 Creedmoor is a better deer cartridge than the 243.
