when u hear families members say "oh she lucky she got that good hair" and apparently yours doesn't look like what they call "good hair", hearing the insult nappy headed, always seeing dry tangled 4c hair in slave movies (which can lead to a negative association), never seeing 4b/4c hair when curly hair is being talked about or shown...these things can influence a person to hate their 4c hair. glad there's more ppl showing the beauty of 4c hair like Chizi!

Gift Chima I mean its no doubt that 4c hair gets your arms toned 😂 but every hair type has it's difficulties: limpness, excessive dryness, breakage(i remember all my straight hair friends whose jackets would be covered in their hair😬),etc but that's why its great that there's more 4c girls showing how to simplify routines, and showing simple hairstyles that can be achieved. There's sort of a stigma that being natural means u don't have to do anything to your hair..but just as you(not you specifically but in general) made sure to keep track of when to get another perm, remembered to wrap at night, use the right shampoo...that same dedication applies to natural hair. The good thing tho is that you can have a lazy day(or more) with natural hair (incl 4c) and get away with it.

This right here.... I'm going to start by stating the obvious (as evidenced by my profile pic) that I am not black. I do not have 4c natural hair and yet this video has had a profound impact on me. I have a mixed race daughter who has 4c natural hair and there is nothing that I can say to her that she views as substantial in regards to her hair since I have very long straight hair. Since I dont understand. Since society doesn't tell me my hair is unruly or out of control when I wear it natural. My heart is broken that she hates her 4c natural hair. I know its beauty. I kept it chemical free moisturized and in protective styles 12 years of her life and then I started letting her manage it on her own. Her father (who is African American) and the women in his family have been largely responsible for making her feel insecure about her hair. They would see her fro and say "What is your Mama doing with your hair? You look wild and crazy. Your mama needs to do something with that wig...its because she aint black she don't know how to take care of it." Last year she was with her dad's mother and they permed her without my permission. Needless to say I was furious. None of the women in his family have natural hair....it's all permed, short and unhealthy looking. Since then she has flat ironed it a few times and kept it in a tight ponytail and it is all but completely broken off. Her hair was soooo long. If not for the shrinkage it was to the middle of her back. We are now at the point where I have to get it cut into a very short style to be healthy and she is dreading it. We have to start all over with her hair. My biggest obstacle is trying to instill confidence in her. How can I teach her to love her hair for what it is, accept its appearance in its natural state and stop expecting it to look like the media portrays "mixed hair" should be. How do I counter her black family telling her she wasnt blessed with "good hair" . I love her hair more than she does. But again in her eyes since my hair is exactly what society says pretty hair is, I don't know the struggle, and my appreciation and pride for her hair doesn't mean anything. I guess it's just going to be work. But I'm going to let her watch this video and read the comments and I hope it impacts her as much as it has me. Additionally, going to subscribe and seek out advice on starting over with 4C natural hair. What products to use to promote growth and healthy hair etc. Thank you for this. You are absolutely stunning and I hope my daughter has the confidence you do in her hair one day soon.

Dezarae Murguia looks like ur doing a great job, just find RUclips video of 4c ppl with kids . There natural4c she great with tips. Also yes family is being mean but they also know how she will be treated by non black ppl. Yes Work place An school discriminate against natural hair. So be prepared for that too.
But also wait too see what ur daughter wants to be . If she light An can pass as white she might want to keep her hair relax to be considered pretty ( white women are still at the top pedestal the. Asians women) good luck :)

Big props to you for doing your best for keeping the chemicals out of her hair as long as you did. I would be beyond furious if my in laws permed my kids hair without my permission! That was completely out of line and I probably would have cursed them out! You probably know more about natural hair than those women! It is a complete shame for her own father and other family members to shame her for what God placed on her head. The self-hate is REAL with a lot of black folks sadly! I do NOT suggest relaxing her hair as the other comment suggested, hell no. All you can do is continue telling her how beautiful her coils and curls are. Buy products that will enhance the natural beauty of her hair. Your hair can do things her hair can't do, but her hair can do things your hair can't do! Straight hair is EASY to take care of but that doesn't make it BETTER! I have two daughters and all 3 of us are natural. You can see my older daughter (TL) and her friend here: ruclips.net/video/gP2vWSE1cIQ/видео.html
She absolutely LOVES her hair! I've told her that her hair was beautiful since she was a child and she embraces it. She has 4c natural hair and it is one of her best features! I was natural in 2008 and relaxed my hair again, and currently back to natural. Not gonna lie, our hair is high maintenance hair...water, oil, moisture is necessary on a daily basis. Just keep working with your daughter, have her subscribe to a bunch of natural hair care channels and watch them for tips and encouragement religiously! Teach her that God does not make mistakes and he created her hair that way because He thought it was beautiful. Who is anyone to say that it's not! Screw the status quo and rock that natural hair with pride! Her confidence will grow over time :D

Im black and my kids are half Mexican. The baby girl and baby boy have loose curly 3a hair but their older brother has 3c/4a kinda hair. And my family is the SAME way with my eldest son like ur daughter's father's family. Calling his hair nappy and saying he got "nigga" hair (sorry for the bad word) & its really not nappy, just very frizzy. My eldest child is the reason I went natural these past 2 years. Im 4c and its so hard to grow it out and its breaks and dries so much i HATE it but I'm trying to love it. My son loves playing in my hair and pulling on it (he's autistic). I went natural so he can love his hair too no matter what my ignorant family says. But its so cute my daughter says she loves my hair and she makes me try to love it too. She says her 3a hair is too long and gets in her face too much lol but she says mine looks like a crown and that ima queen lol so i know she will encourage her bubba to love his hair too.

You arw doing an amazing job on raising and teaching your beautiful your daughter is my showing her to embrace her natural hair. Now as far as her dad's side of the family, they were dead wrong to begin with. Not only they put a harsh hydrogen ion with sulfur in her hair, but to have to give her the big chop to have her hair healthy again had me in tears. If you want any tips on how to style your daughter's hair or products to use, you can hit me up on Instagram. My Instagram name is DaRadiant1 ( pronounced The Radiant One) or just like the ladies said up here. Find some videos who have ladies that embraced their 4c hair. Show your daughter these self taught videos on how to maintain and style her. Again, if you have any questions, don't never be afraid to ask for help okay. ❤ ya! P.S. You are doing an amazing job with your daughter and I am so proud of you! ❤

I currently hate my 4c hair because despite all my efforts, I can’t find styles with my 4c hair that make me feel beautiful. I’d be so willing to put in all the time and energy if I actually liked the outcome, but I don’t. I feel like it limits me in looking how I want. It’s a real conflict because I want to embrace my natural beauty but my natural hair also makes me feel deeply insecure.

I understand completely. I’ve been trying to grow my hair since last fall and I put it away recently so I won’t have to manipulate it so much (since I’m remote).
It’s difficult to say that every time I take off my silk scarf, bonnet whatever you want to call it, I feel...ugly. I feel like I probably will never see my hair at it’s full potential because for so long I’ve been trying to figure it out. Some say to leave it alone others say to wash it every week. I’ve tried so many products, I tried to not look at it, I don’t even know if what I’m doing now is helping it. And don’t get started on the other things I’m insecure about on top of my hair not doing what I want it to.
It’s difficult for sure, I’m learning to love it everyday and I don’t want to give up on it. So...I just keep going

I think having type 4 hair in a society where Type 1-3 hair is celebrated is the issue. I'm an older woman who grew up in the 60's and 70's and the natural movement was full force among women and men. Everyone was growing their natural hair. We didn't have all the products you have today and yet our hair kept growing. We did braid our hair mostly every night. That was just something you did, like brushing your teeth. We didn't consider it a chore because we were in love with our hair. We didn't have all the fancy styles they have now(I wish we had that would have been fly) but we enjoyed the freedom from the straightning comb. It's important to know who you are and not compare yourself to anyone else. Love the skin you're in and the hair you wear and keep it simple.

I love hearing from our more seasoned or older sisters about how natural hair in the context of the 60s and 70s. I'm a little younger, born in the 80s so my generation seems to have a different approach to natural hair. I could be wrong but back then, it didn't seem like there was as much of an emphasis on curl pattern and silky loose textures. Back then it almost seemed like kinkier hair was more desirable because that's the texture that would form the nicest Afro. It just seems like there was more unity and I wish we had more of that now.

    • @AfriPrincess411
      @AfriPrincess411 7 лет назад +11

If there was so much unity back then, why did those same people go back to relaxers and weaves, then?

    • @ForUsNaturals
      @ForUsNaturals 6 лет назад +2

I can't imagine that going from not having to braid your hair and then suddenly having to braid it every night was so effortless, especially for kinkier hair. Looser textured hair gains length faster than kinkier hair and I can say that people did still praise looser hair back then just like now. Bigger longer Afros were more coveted than the shorter ones or the kinkier ones that shrank or didn't stretch to ever even look long in the first place. It's all the same, people just use different lingo.

Kodama agreed i have 2 girls(and 2 sons but this isnt about them lol) ages 7&10 .they both have long healthy hair but the color and texture is different... we talk about hair care and the beauty of natural hair a lot... i dont do she has good/bad hair, your texture is better/worse than hers nonsense it will only breed division between them. We tell our girls they are beautiful and we love them. If we speak negatively over them we can destroy their self esteem.

Kodama My daughters and I are 16, 17 and 42 and all natural now We love it! We are all 4b and 4c texture. This is my second time big chopping as an adult. I had to stop relaxing my older daughters hair several years ago to about 2 inches and it was a struggle but I taught her what to do and eventually she did it LOL. Now she has big beautiful black hair! I've always told them how beautiful and unique they and their hair is that they even encourage me now! My mother struggles with acknowledging the beauty of natural hair and my kids and I have discussed this. I however have taught them better! We love and embrace the fro in our house!

For some people it's not that we hate our hair because we think 4c hair is ugly. Sometimes you just don't have the time, luxury, or attention span to deal with it!
It's honestly depressing when I think it's about time to wash my 4c hair, because I know it will literally take ALL DAY LONG. And yes I do envy my fellow sistas with looser curl patterns because they can take a shower, wash their hair, blow-dry it or even just let it air dry AND GO! And they look perfectly fine. They don't have to worry about their hair shriveling up, drying out and breaking off. They don't have to spend hours detangling and then trying to style it so that it doesn't look like an unkempt mess! Not to mention they can just run a brush through their hair without worrying it's going to set their hair growth back 2 years!
And yes I know you can just wear 4c hair in a fro, but that's not always acceptable in all work situations, and I don't always feel like being stared at or having people walk up to me with curiosity, wonder, and appreciation for the volume of my fro! I mean yes, it's nice, and I appreciate that you appreciate my boldness and my hair texture, but I don't want to hear it every time I walk into a room by EVERY PERSON IN THE DAMN ROOM!
So yes I do hate my 4c hair and I'm unapologetic for it. That doesn't mean I love myself any less.

Haikupixie Wooz I get where ur coming from, but it is ultimately a feeling of self hate. To hate ur god given texture and u wish u had somebody's else's hair texture. Yes it stems from the fact that 4c hair is hard to maintain and the frustration is very justified but Ik many naturals that get frustrated with their hair but still love it and wouldn't wish for it to be looser or straighter. It's a very thin line between justifiable frustration and hating for your hair texture/ having envy for a looser one. I'm a 4c chick and I definitely get frustrated and know the struggle but it becomes self hate when I start thinking mixed hair is superior to kinky hair even when I can take care of it, and seeing a mixed chick walk by me and wishing I had her hair. It can be a paper thin line sometimes. Which side are you on?

    • @leilanidru7506
      @leilanidru7506 6 лет назад +14

LadyJ2389 I don't think it should be automatically self hate, but just because it stems from frustrations doesn't mean it isn't self hate either. People honestly don't know the difference between genuine frustrations with their hair and wanting a break and genuinely hating their texture and envying others. If it isn't self hate, then it's something else that's just as disgusting. Because the next generation will watch that and they will grow up with relaxers on their hair (just like we did) because they think it's the worst hair texture to have because society genuinely thinks that. Can u imagine a world were certain hair textures are considered less than? What does that tell to the younger ones growing up? It's literally the same as hating ur skin and wanting to bleach it or hating any part of ur body and wanting to surgically alter it. (Extreme examples I know) but it's the way U we're born and it isn't right that some feel that they NEED sodium hydroxide to relax their hair and make it manageable

This topic is so important to talk about. I've been natural for 3 years and girl... OF COURSE there have been times where I got so annoyed with my hair and just wanted it gone, or wanted a different texture (who doesn't feel like that sometimes) but as I kept progressing through this hair journey I realized just how amazing 4c hair is. It's so liberating having 4c hair knowing that no one can even begin to emulate the same kinks and coils that we have. Our hair is SO unique it's almost unfair. And yes, 4c hair is difficult to take care of, but sis, would it really be a journey if it was easy? I hope that all the natural 4c girls, and all textures as well, grow to accept and love their hair. It takes WAY too much energy to hate the texture you were given, loving it is a much better option. Great video!

Amen! I have different textures (which is nerve racking) but I'm 4b/4c. I do have those moments where I'm like...I want a relaxer..but what keeps me going is the desire to learn my hair and understand what works and what doesn't...I want to see my hair at its optimum health in its natural state. I feel like learning yourself is the best way to love yourself and learning your hair is a great accomplishment. it definitely is challenging but I just think about how I will feel when I've mastered and understood my hair.

I JUST finished reading "The Bluest Eye" by my fairy Godmutha Toni Morrison and the overwhelming theme of the book coincides perfectly with what you're discussing. The disillusionment of beauty and beauty standards in America are especially poisonous to black women because we are at the opposite end of the spectrum. The negative feelings we have towards or hair and skin are not our own and because we live and participate in culture that glorifies ,what it seems to be, everything we are not we are constantly in a state of contentment and dissatisfaction with our physical selves. It does take a strong mind to break away from all the noise telling us that we are not good enough because there are so many voices that speak to the contrary. For me it was realizing that I saw beauty in my fellow black sister who had kinky, thick, coarse hair, no matter what anyone else said they were beautiful because they were who they are organically. There ain't nothing wrong with our beauty. The issue lies in people's reaction to it.

Briana Janae i am sooo proud to be a black woman with kinky hair there is no better feeling than when i see my sisters rocking there natural hair with pride and confidence. I've also md many friends as we conversate on ways to take care of our hair and exchanging style ideas . I'm jus so overwhelmed with the versatility of our hair and how we were taught it wasn't acceptable. CHANGES 😍😘😘

Before I met you at Curl fest, I was hating the way my hair looked. To me, it wasn't flourishing. It looked dull and when i compared it to other naturals I saw, I felt even worse. When I met you and you said "I love your hair" I felt a little better about it because you have the same hair texture as me which meant even more to me since you know the exact struggles. That simple compliment you gave really reassured me that my hair is beautiful and I should learn to embrace it even more. Thank you so much :)

At first I worried about how I would be perceived. Especially by men! For some reason I thought I'd never be desired by a man if I rocked my 4C hair. But I took the plunge and it really was a freeing experience. In a world where women are constantly trying to alter their appearance I feel so bold to be able to embrace my looks in this way. I'm also the mom of two biracial boys with what people consider to be "good hair". But at my house, healthy hair is the only kind of good hair! They hear me speak positively about my hair. They see the pride I take in caring for it. They compliment it. They love to dig their little hands in my fro while telling me how soft it is. I'm realizing that I'm shaping their perception of beauty and I couldn't be more proud.

I just think that some people just won't accept their texture and they can't let go of social conditioning. Just the other day....my 4-year old niece told my daughter (6 years old) that her hair was nappy.... My daughter didn't even know what she was saying. That's how much of a difference it makes. Proof that hair hatred is taught. I think you get over it by accepting it and living with it all the time.

Today, I showed a picture of my daughter to a co worker, a man also looked at the picture and while flailing his hand above his head said, what's wrong with her hair, which was a luscious Afro. I think one of the reasons we struggle with our kinkiest hair texture is because the societal views of beauty affect how we see ourselves. I hate my natural hair sometimes, but I hated my permed hair sometimes too. I don't beat up on myself when I'm not feeling my hair, I usually just get a long term style and am always glad to see my hair again.

I have 4C hair, have been natural since 2014 and I am growing to dislike it more and more. It's now 2017 and I'm about to start my freshman year in college. I feel like it's just gonna be so much extra work that I don't have the time for. My hair is always shrunken and I never see any length in it. Braid outs are pointless because my hair just shrinks back up as soon as I step outside. Ugh, it's so annoying. I always resort to protective styles and I feel some kind of way when I don't have my braids in. I wear a puff almost everyday and even that shrinks up by night time. It's just so stressful, lol. I just needed to rant real quick

Ashthekween, first, congratulations on beginning your first year in college! Don’t forget to visit your college library, I’m a college librarian, and we got what you need boo! Second, if that is you in the profile pic, you are lovely, and your puff is on point! One thing that I just recently learned that helped combat shrinkage, especially in humid climates,is to use moisturizers that do NOT have humectants in them, like glycerine, honey, and propylene glycol. You will still shrink a bit, but not as much. Wishing you great success in all that you do!

try using a small application bottle and measure out the oils. i use a small spray bottle and use r oils. and measure them eith measuring spoons. the bottle is no more that a couple of ounces and what started as 1-2 uses i can get 3-4 uses out it. and i apply it by making chunky parts and appying it to my scalp or close to my roots (for moisturizers think applying a perm) and rub down the shaft vs when i use to rub products in my hands and my hair was not thouroghly moisturized or i have to use alot of product.
those have kelped me alot with keeping my hair moist and stretching the products

The only thing I did not like about my 4c hair is that even after five years; it was still not at my desired length. This caused me to not experiment with as much styles and as a result I relaxed again in July 2016. Since then I have transitioned and big chopped again for the umpteenth time. So my journey begins again.
All I need to do now is come to a mental place where I feel just as glam with my natural hair as I do with the wigs. (I want to look like an adult not a child when I wear my natural hair).

I've been in the "I HATE my 4C hair" stage ever since my big chop in October 2016. I watched RUclips videos before and after the chop to get a feel for how to nourish and style my hair, but it hasn't seemed to work for me. I've been feeling a lot of regret, if I'm being honest. But I'm going to stay the course and figure it out, because it IS a journey. And by the way, I LOVE the style you're rocking in this video!

TBH I've kind of given up with my hair😂 I have VERY THICK hair. I don't hate my hair, I just don't care much about it anymore. Every time that I grow out my hair, I will for some reason always have to cut it off because of very split ends. Now I just put my hair in cornrows and go lol. I've watched so many RUclips videos about how to moisturize my hair, what products to buy blah blah blah, but nothing seems to work so I just do protective styling pretty much all the time. Thanks for the video! Your hair is so pretty btw😍

It took me a month since my bigchop to start embrassing my 4c hair. I was kinda feeling confident when I cut all the relaxed hair. But then the female people that surounded me killed all of it specially my mom . The natural hair movement is nt well popular in where I leave. I remember 4 days after I went natural I was in the living room and then there was my mom who started to critisize the way my hair looked to her guest. I got so mad so before I beak in front of everyone I sudently went to my room and got eveyone's attention. Couple minutes ago my om came into my my room and started to scold me by saying how I was disrespectful and so weak whenever someone say something that I don't apreciate, thta I should accept people critics, that I'm acting like a white girl...etc. I was like REALLY? but I didn't dare to say anything cuz all my life I was taught to not respond back when adults talk to you for "respect" they say --". The relation between my mom and I wasn't even good before, I was like forcing myself to have at least a conversation with her. But after what she said to me, it was worst. I don't even try anymore.
Thank god now I'm proud of my hair and I seriously love it. Whenever I look at the mirror while doing my hair I always have a smile in my face thans to you and all the other youtubers who showed the good side of 4c hair. Now theonly thing that bothers me sometimes is just how short it is but I'll get over that 😂😂

I'm quite tender headed but my hair hasn't hurt me with combing since I was a kid and my mom used to yank my hair by combing when dry!
The comb doesn't glide through at all times obviously, but it never hurts me anymore now. Are you still coming your hair dry? You should be doing it when damp with product or oils. If you are maybe try detangling in the shower with slippery conditioner(even the cheap ones). I can't see how if you use proper technique that combing should hurt.

Recently I started cowashing with a mixture of raw apple cider vinegar and a detangling conditioner, and i love good deep conditioner.

I think it's time consuming. A real wash and go is not what a 4c person truly does. You can't just comb it. You have to be gentle with it. Any kind of breakage can set you back a whole years worth of growth and sometimes you don't even know why you got the breakage. Hours upon hours every week or so gets really tired. That's why people don't like 4c hair because a lower curl pattern is not a fragile and usually the growth pattern or cycle is better. When a woman says she gets 1/4 of growth a month you can believe it now retaining that growth is a whole other issue.

When I was in high skl I use to get upset bcuz whenever I tried to wear my hair in a puff my Vice Principal wud tell me to do something with my hair bcuz it's looking untidy but the laid hair girls cud have their hair down but As I grew older I realize that there r other ppl out there with bigger struggles than I have with their hair won't grow but they cherish it. And with the whole natural hair movement it gave me the courage to appreciate my 4C hair more and give more attention to it in hair care. Now I'm loving my loving my hair and is loving me back. Reasons why I have disliked my 4c hair
-Seeing youtube and other forms of media (ex tv commercial of the new shea moisture #canceled) showcase natural hair mainly as curly hair even though most black people, as far as I know, have coily hair
-Additionally in the media, when black people are shown they tend to have type 3 or straight hair and its very rare to see coily hair that isn't shaved off or extremely short
-Hair not as accepted in society compared to other hair textures (especially in the job field)
    -SINGLE STRAND KNOTS
-Its more harder to find a salonist who know how to deal with your texture

I do have a strong dislike for my 4b/c hair that I'm not sure will ever go away. I've been natural for 17 years, years before the natural movement became popular. I've tried countless different methods and advice. I've been on hair forums, watched RUclips videos, blogs, read books, lived healthy, protective styling, you name it I've tried it. I've experienced my hair at it's healthiest and not so much. I just don't like this hair because it requires so much maintenance to be healthy, grow long, and stay on my head. I hate wearing false hair, but I feel it's so necessary at times because this hair just won't cooperate. I just want hair that grows fast, doesn't break, and requires little maintenance.

U don't need to pre-poo if u have a good shampoo, shampooing should literally take 50 secs coz u don't have to part in sections or detangle before it. Wash ur hair as is with something that cleans but doesn't strip ur hair. Then use a slippery Rinse out and wide tooth comb conditioner to detangle, in larger sections (about 4-6) that should take u about 10-20 mins. Then for deep conditioning u can rinse out the conditioner and just go deep condition you already detangled twisted up sections. Let the steam get in you hair while u shower. I take 15-20 min shower so it's perfect😂 and then for styling get a great moisturizer (I can recommend u some of u want) and it doesn't matter how great that moisturizer is if u don't seal. Seal. Seal. Seal all that good ness with a moisturizer. Then plait your hair in like four braids for an elongated moisturized fro. Then go about ur day. My ENTIRE wash day routine takes me 1 hour- 1hr and a half depending on the styling. This includes washing, conditioning, detangling, deep conditioning, and styling. (Doesn't include drying time which for me is overnight or air drying as I get work done) but yea it doesn't have to take forever and I swear it does get easier. Most of the things that I found that cut my hair time by like 80% were discovered on accident. Watch "the chic natural" wash day routine. She literally does everything in this long ass dissertation in a few mins and makes it easy to understand.

I love love love my 4c hair. I love the way it looks (i've gotten to the point where I prefer the way 4c hair looks over other textures). For me its easier to manage than my relaxed hair (but that could just be because I know more about taking care of my hair now than I did when I was relaxed).
A big thing for me is I will go outside with a fro. I'll wake up, pull it out a bit and go (i'm known for not giving a f*ck what other think about my hair/clothes/etc choices tho lol). I've stopped caring too much about twist outs and trying to "define" it. The cotton look is SO PRETTY!

For me, I'm trying to learn that everything that is said, I dont need to always take in. Its their opinion. That's all. I love me and my 4C hair and I feel sorry for those that don't. I was really curious about how my natural hair would look for the longest (my mom glorified me getting a relaxer and I got one at the age of 10 until I was 19). At 19 I started to transition until eventually.....i had a big ass fro lol. & the fro is sooooo dope. Feel like Pam Grier. & I should probably change my profile pic on here lol but what makes me appreciate the texture I have is knowing that it is unique to me. There is no other hair that grows from someone else's head the same way it does for mine. & also silencing naysayers because there are always people who won't appreciate Type 4 hair because they are jealous of your confidence & beauty. Having a strong sense of self and love for self is important with things like this (well all things lol)

One of the previous commenters was comparing the natural hair movement of today to that of the 60s and 70s. She mentioned that nowadays there are far more styling options and products to experiment with. That much is completely true. I'm telling my age here, but what made the previous natural hair movement more positive, was that it wasn't about length-retention or "curls-a-poppin'" or reaching "hair goals" or any of that. It was simply about being BLACK. The movement came at the height of the Civil Rights era and being Black was IT. So, as she said, some people braided their hair at night and picked it out in the morning to have a looser afro, but most people just slept on theirs, applied a little AfroSheen, picked it, patted it, and rocked it in a completely natural state. Now THAT was a REAL "wash-n-go". Many women wore short afros and never looked sexier and more feminine and beautiful. It wasn't about getting one's hair to look or behave a certain way, or to be like so-and-so's hair, or reach a certain length. It was about letting your hair be and look like YOUR hair. Black women with loose curls were trying to make their hair curlier so they could rock an afro too. People whose hair hung down were mad about it!!! Even White people were getting perms so they could flaunt a gravity-defying "fro". Hopefully, with time and continued discussion we can have a natural hair movement that grows and evolves and is more than just a trend. A movement not so aimed at achieving a certain 'look' or length that, for many of us, may be unattainable, unrealistic and, ultimately, unimportant. Seeing 75-85% of Black women and girls in weaves and wigs is disturbing and disheartening. All that pulling, stitching and those heavy wefts of hair are killing our follicles AND our self-image! I miss the days when we rocked what GOD gave us, short or long. Keep the videos coming, +Chizi Duru, and the dialog going . . .

To be clear, I am all for style versatility and growth-retention aims. And I am certainly all about healthy, moisturized, thriving hair. What I don't think the natural hair movement should generally be about are the ideals of super-defined, big, silky curls or having hair that is waist length or longer. I mean, that's cool if you can do all that without spending all your free time in the attempt. But the main goal should be to discover, appreciate, cultivate, love, and admire the beauty in you and your hair in all your GOD-given glory. And you, Black woman, ARE glorious and wonderfully made.

@didi you’re probably not retaining length…make sure you
trim your ends when they appear see through . make sure to keep your hair moisturizer. sleep with silk pillow case or silk bonnet. try to finger detangle before using comb or brush. i suggest using wide tooth comb and not brush because the bristles can be a little harsh on delicate afro hair, but you can use what you want. make sure you also
drink water .. make sure to be careful with your hair as afro hair is delicate. try to wash your hair more often and deep condition

After 2 weeks of the consistent failure (wash n go, twist out, flat twist, new products etc) I gave up. Ran to the beauty supply and finished another crochet style in 4 hours. Just don't need all the drama in my life these days. Need to keep it simple!

For me to get over it I stopped wearing hats, earrings and any type of make-up (I wasn't really into make-up at the time anyway) for weeks and here I am ~7yrs later going out with no shame in the hair or face that God gave me. Nowadays I even prefer to see myself with short hair!

Is it weird that as a 4b/4c girl that I have always loved my hair. And I don't think it happened by pick or chance, but just by the kind of environment my mother have me growing up. My 4b/4c, THICK (I mean NO mercy in the thick department), bra strap length hair has always been something my mother and father told me was the best thing about me. I NEVER had a relaxed but my grandmother did give me a texturizer and my mother nearly chocked her🤣🤣 But my parents always told me how beautiful my hair was even if society wasn't going to do it. My thing has always been length. I loved my hair but I've always had a lot of it and it was very long so have been contemplating big chopping in order to really gain more confidence in how I would look with no hair at all. Because when you big chop I notice my friends that have, first of all have BOMB FEATURES 😂😂😂, but most of all have a better understanding of themselves and almost hold up the middle finger to society's beauty standards. That their own standard of beauty is the one they make.

I told my mother and father this and they were actually more than supportive. I remember my father even telling me that a black woman's strength, courage, and passion is what makes her truly beautiful. That in the face of societal pressure to adhere to a more European standard that there still some of us that go against the grain and accept and love ourselves for who we really are.

4c hair is very pretty when its taken care of and styled right. However, having thin/fine 4c hair is another story, which is what I have, b/c no matter how I style it it just doesn't look right b/c it's not full which takes away from the look of it, and it breaks easily. But i guess I should be grateful as I'm not bald.

Sarah P. I also have fine 4c hair but ok let me help 1) get a water filter if you live in a state with hard water the minerals in the water will build up on your hair and break it off. It also effects shampoos and conditioners 2) don't mess in your hair too much our is is the most fragile hair type like thin glass 3) olive oil lol 4) alphgee protein treatments 1 a month 5) keep your scalp clear.. if you have scalp issue looking into onion and garlic shampoo 6) lco liquid/bottle water cream/any leave in and oil/olive oil 7) keep it down like I do the lco method every other night and braid it down put a scarf on and wear a wig. 8) no small combs only big tooth combs or finger comb 9) scalp message.... that all for breakage as far as thin hair for me it's genetic nothing I can do about that but find styles(braids or wigs lol) for thin hair.

Thank you, again for your honesty and for having this conversation! There are many of us who feel or have felt this way and no one should be scrutinized for their feelings. Unless you have our hair...you don't know the struggle! lol The other side of this issue is something you've captioned and that's self acceptance. We have to know that even though we experience our own level of frustrations with managing our texture (as everyone does), proper care and truly embracing our mane gives our kinks and curl new life!
I personally like a more controlled look and with my active lifestyle, I tire of trying to maintain the look that I want daily, so I have heavily relied on Senegalese twists. Mai R. Now that's a bold faced lie. Even Latin Americans like Amara Le Negra have spoken up about being singled out or teased because of her dark skin and hair texture. In Latin America, the lighter the better and same goes for hair, the straighter the better. For example, in Brazil they don't accept darker women in the media. They didn't want a dark Brazilian to be Miss Brazil a few years ago and it was a whole media frenzy. In DR, there's a campaign to send dark and Haitian/Dominicans to Haiti. And Mexicans are flat out racist against Blacks and darker Mexicans. Please let me know which parts you are talking about so I know where to go when I visit.

Knowing what I know now and having grown out my hair to a decent length I can now look after my two daughters hair who both have different textures which echo my sister and i but now I know how to empower both my daughters who are still little to love their hair and each other's as well as my son to love and appreciate our type of hair and the women who own it! I proudly own my hair without the fuss of styling, but keep it healthy and lush, it's coily, thick and prone to tangles but love it still. Just own with pride and heads will turn on awe x

I come from Africa and in there most girls relax their hair because they want it to be straight. Growing up I started perming my hair when I was younger. I didn't hate my natural hair, I just didn't know about it because most girls straightened it. My mom and sister growing up had huge Afro,'s and Afro's were a thing in the 70's in Ghana but they straightened it not cause they hate it. I started doing natural because I just wanted to have the hair I was born with. Some children in Africa see straighter hair as better. And they grow up seeing white dolls (not hating on any race) instead of themselves so they feel self conscious about their skin and hair. And result to bleaching hitch leads to skin damage and over relaxing which damages the scalp. I wish people struggling can see this because I love my hair.

This actually made me cry because I’m struggling so much with loving and caring for my hair. I constantly am bombarded with appreciation for 3B-4B hair; that 4B seems to be the most kinky “acceptable” grades. I’ve been asking a lot, why don’t women with 4C hair get the same amount of appreciation and recognition, and when we do, why is it only when we stretch and manipulate our hair? What’s wrong with our hair in it’s completely natural state? It’s gotten to the point where I look at my hair when the Bantu knots fade and when it shrinks back after I’ve picked and detangled and be so unhappy with it that I want to curl in a ball and cry. Hearing you speak so positive about our hair really made me feel not only guilty about how I felt (I don’t mean this in a negative way) but you made me feel like I actually could do this and start learning to appreciate my hair. You’re literally the voice I need.

I'd just like to take a minute and say thank you so much for posting this video. EVERYTHING you said I could totally relate to. My mom and sister have looser curl patterns than me and I've always wished I had their hair and wondered why I was the oddball. I used to always hide my hair under "protective styles". If I had to take it out, I would only do so over the weekend and come in with a brand new "protective style on Monday. I never saw my hair as beautiful because I could never find someone around me with my hair texture. I just learned to let my hair do its own thing and to love it even when I wanted to pull it all out. This video was a reminder of where I was during that time and how far I've come. Though it may not always cooperate, I love my 4C hair.

I'm actually really glad I decided to look up things on natural hair today and that I found your videos. I love that you brought this topic up because it's one that I really needed to feel free enough to talk about. I started my natural hair journey 2 years ago because my friends started it too and encouraged me to join. Now while some of my friends had it easier and had their hair growing quickly, I and some other friends had ours grow slowly. Right now I feel like I'm the only one still behind on this journey (although I started later I guess). I expected mine to grow as fast and full and thick and luscious as theirs but over the last 6 months, I feel like my hair has been stagnant and so stubborn. To me it looks so dry and scanty (although I've had random people tell me my hair looks beautiful) I just feel like it could be fuller and thicker. I feel like my hair isn't at the length it should be after 2 years. My shrinkage is just ridiculous. Like if I stretch my hair it's fairly below my shoulders but when it shrinks it look like I just had a fresh cut. Asides the length I feel like my hair doesn't curl beautifully like other peoples do even when I put all the products in. I've come to understand that part of it is that I am still learning about my hair, and what works for it and what doesn't. I truly do love my hair. I love it so much but I'm just trying to navigate ways to better help my hair grow and flourish so that it can reach that level of beauty that I know it has potential to have :) It's a matter of patience and care right now
