  • Jazz has had inextricable links with religion since it first blossomed in New Orleans. As one of the fastest evolving genres in music, each variation of its style can quickly develop its own conventions that end up restricting the human, spiritual expression of the centre of it. In this video, we take a look at one of the most influential couples in the Western canon, John and Alice Coltrane: jazz musicians who pushed the boundaries of style and instrumentation, and used the medium as a way of furthering their own spiritual pursuits.

I had a ticket to see Alice Coltrane in London, but she died about six weeks before the concert was due to take place. Sigh.

Thanks for this and especially for celebrating Alice Coltrane. I've been a fan of Jazz for decades and LOVE John Coltrane's music. I'm embarrassed to say, I hadn't even heard of Alice Coltrane, let alone listened to her music until two weeks ago. She was a remarkable spiritual and creative force and has deepened significantly my appreciation for creative takes on jazz and other forms of music that wander further and further from the mainstream.

alice coltrane made some music that had me questioning my own complete rejection of spirituality and all things supernatural. i like music that takes me out of my comfort zone.

Thank you so much for making this. Alice deserves to be just as widely beloved and celebrated as her late husband. Can't believe this video doesn't have a million views. Bravo!

Ugh, thank you so much for this video. So perfect. Jazz has always been spiritual to me, but ever since I've gone through a spiritual crisis it has become more and more like a religion to me but with Black people as my congregation and Hinduism as its doctrine.

Just as Interesting as all of your other videos. Prior to it I had little to no knowledge about Jazz and Spirituality and after watching this it feels as if I have been immersed into a whole new world. Love it and keep up the good work!
