The Silent Heroism of INDIANA JONES
Просмотров 10 тыс.2 года назад
It's common knowledge that Indiana Jones is a tribute to the adventure movies and serials of the 30s and 40s, developed as America's answer to James Bond. But at the core of his character is an older influence, one taken from the slapstick heroes of silent cinema. The Church of Jazz | John and Alice Coltrane

Jazz has had inextricable links with religion since it first blossomed in New Orleans. As one of the fastest evolving genres in music, each variation of its style can quickly develop its own conventions that end up restricting the human, spiritual expression of the centre of it. In this video, we take a look at one of the most influential couples in the Western canon, John and Alice Coltrane: j...

The Weirdest Comedy Show You'll Ever Hear
I hate the modem click bait RUclips titles. I mean, it definitly worked on me but it's just gross. You should definitely read Burroughs. And although most will know him for naked lunch and the incoherent literary porn that he's synonymous with, his other writings are completely coherent and well formed. Interzone is my favorite.
I tend to agree with you but as you say you’ve proved the point!
steve reviews?
Everyone knows and love Burroughs! I am a recovering junkie. I used to love reading his books
'that's what they want, a god damned show' ... he used a contaflex, so he was a good man.
fascinating
What an interesting topic to cover. Thank you!
Recently, I've been listening and discovering her performance, and I truly enjoy her work
I thoroughly enjoyed this! Thank you, too, for introducing me to Nico Muhly's 'Hudson Preludes: Take Care' (and thence to James McVinnie's Cycles album) - sublime!
My pleasure! So glad you've found the 'Cycles' album, it's a favourite of mine. I've got to shout out @adamchlebek7505 for his wonderful performance!
Naked Lunch caused me to relapse on heroin many years ago, because of the way he described the "orchid" of blood shooting into a needle.
I read Naked Lunch in high school, and I could literally feel it messing with my brain's wiring. I often compare it to the feeling you get sometimes after reading a page in a book, and thinking to yourself "Wait, what did I just read?" Only that's how the whole book feels.
When I was younger I liked his work because as teenagers we are subtly taught to rebel and push the envelope so- naturally, you’re drawn to those who push boundaries. Two decades later, I find his work unreadable and a lame attempt to push his sordid world upon normalcy.
3:30 I'm gonna take him up on this. Time to cut up the audiobook into a bunch of chapters and give it a listen.
Junkie
Burroughs cut and paste method is highly influential.
I just saw Titane the other day, finally, and I have to say didn’t hate it but also didn’t love it, well, yeah it was disturbing, but I think it fell into a more exploitive nature. I saw raw during the pandemic and man, not only was it shocking but also engrossing, it really captured this young woman’s transformation to I guess I’d describe self awareness or self conceptualization, the woman in titane had those elements but I just didn’t experience the same connection to the character and ended up seeing the movie as a series of jump scared and bombastic imagery. Interesting you mentioned crash, had the same problem with it, where the book captured the mindset of sexualizing the relationship between man and machine, the movie just seemed almost ridiculous and the characters one dimensional and if I hadn’t read the book I would have had no idea how these people got to that perversion, titane does a much better job of relating a backstory but it seemed to go astray when she goes on that rampage, idk, maybe I’m comparing it too much to raw on the surface they are similar coming of age stories, I just really liked raw. Btw, the yt algorithm sent your vid on William Burroughs to me and now I’ve ended staying up all night watching your channel so thanks for that.
Titane’s definitely demanding - you’re right, it’s quite hard to get on with if you don’t connect with her in the first place, which I think Raw is better at managing. I really appreciate you watching my other videos, especially this one which seems to have stagnated… Hope you stick around!
Idk how you could even touch the subject of wb and make such a short but concise evaluation, nice job. And yes, the naked lunch is s great, a truly great book, written by an absolutely horrible, Immoral person, but that’s the only type of person who could have written it. It’s in a way the great American novel, offensive not because of its language, depravity, violence, but because it questions thd validity of every form of social conformity, be it religion, politics, family, even just personal relationships. I would only caution all those artist and celebs and generations of reverent followers that they should separate their reverence for the art, the work, from the artist, who in creating deserves the platitudes but in life outside the pages did/ does not.
Good video. Yeah, I feel like I want to continue to stay clear of him. I might read something of his 15 years ago. I don't like the murder part and I guess I honestly think he's more for young men who are curious and like fashionably adventurous stuff in black.
The cut up method was designed by Ben Franklin. Come on, you have to know this
It’s not wrong to say Gysin discovered it for himself, given how it was a chance event.
He was a pedophile to. When he lived in Morocco, he pimped his own son out.
What this man did to his Son is criminal. Opiates detach you from Ur feelings and the feelings of others. He firs Still on methadone. He NEVER quit opiates.
Meme. Was invented as a term when they discovered the higgs boson. Because it contains enough information in it self to be considered a memnetic entity. As in memnetics. Memory. Richard dawkins never did shit on his own. Cern on the other hand did.
Could you link a source for that? I'd love to have a look if so
I once went to a lecture by Susan Blackmore who was credited as coming up with memetics. See her book The Meme Machine (1999)
Brilliant video and love how you relate Burroughs writing and behavior to viruses
Thanks so much!
Obnoxious sax music makea this unwatchable.
If you can’t take that then I guess you needn’t bother reading Burroughs
Genius, he’s been there for me on multiple occasions in my life….some passages from naked lunch are just incredible, Junky is like a documentary, still utterly fascinating & totally believable
Burroughs was a degenerate. You can see his influence all around in this disgusting modern world.
2:29 "all consuming influence" 😂
Who doesn’t love a bit of hyperbole ;)
William Burroughs was the first man, that i know of, to come out and say injecting h*roin longterm, as long as it is done sanitarily cuz thise infections are pesky, really does no damage to your health. I totally understand why people hated him back then. And im very glad cronenberg got ahold of Naked Lunch before Lynch 😂
Burrows has had a lot of weird artistic collaborations and connections but some intresting spoken word stuff was done at ZBS run by Meatball Fulton in the 60's and I believe it was the beginning of his random thoughts style recordings. He also had a number of audio tracks like "free energy" released on the John Giorno samplers and video segments on Giorno's video collections. They both were involved in alot of punk related media projects through the 80's as well so you can find random bits in the most unexpected places alot of them filmed or recorded at public places like one of Burroughs filmed at the dive bar the Frolic Room on Wilcox in Hollywood. I think it was when Giorno was doing the "John Giorno Band" 3 poems performance videos with "I would crawl through a mile of sh!t.." as the first track.
Though not the same as the "book" the movie had a really good scene I thought when his friends find him under the bridge. The part where he tells them his writing machine is broken then when he opens the pillow case that holds the peices it is all used needles and empty drug containers. Edited to remove a stray word.
Thank you for this - yes, Language Is A Virus. I love his work, especially "The Third Mind" - done with Gysin. Also, his book, "The Cat Inside" is a beautiful, reverent, holy book. I read it at least 2 or 3 times a year. In my opinion, his love of cats was redemptive.
I do want to read, have read, and encouraged others to read, Burroughs. Terrible video title.
If only the pronoun ‘you’ could refer to more than one specific person…
What a horrible man
"The Priest, they called him..." w/ K. Cobain.
Whaddya mean? I love Uncle Bill! I started reading his works in 9th grade way back in the 80s. 9:37-Our brain is a fungus. Now I'm jonesing for some Laurie Anderson.
Great video, I really enjoyed reading all the comments aswell, got some ministry fans in the house which is awesome. William Burroughs gets so much admiration for the cut up method but no one ever gives any credit to his friend the artist Brion Gysin . If anyones checking out the comments and hasn't heard of him before you're in for a treat if you like this sort of stuff.
The junkie on the cover of Junkie is injecting in the wrong direction!
As a Brit, I feel that you are physically incapable of truly understanding Burroughs at fundamental level. For one thing, you lack the basic American appreciation for gun violence.
It's definitely part of our culture
Having met old Bill, mid 1970,s..I found him to be a git, although a brilliant writer.
Wow! How and where, if you don't mind me asking?
DISSOLUTE HOMICIDAL TRUST FUND BABY HIPSTER ICON
As someone who was familiar with the man’s name and with the existence of Naked Lunch but not much beyond that, the murder was a plot twist
Should point out it was ruled as manslaughter!
Is it really that he was going viral, or that all these people were sucking up to one of their higher ups? This has The Cult written all over it
Burroughs is definitely one author that’s been on my backlog of authors I need to read. Kathy Acker also did an interview with Burroughs and was inspired by him as well! She is definitely another author you should definitely make a video on. She doesn’t really get talked about much.
"I can think of at least two things wrong with that title"
To each his own!

I’ve only just got the reference… my bad
@@ReframedYT 😂 Rated R
William S. Burroughs and most of The Beats were degenerate filthy lowlife scum. However, those irrevocably corrupt m-----f---ers could create beautiful prose and poetry.
Underrated channel, commwnt for algo. Keep on this was verY interesting and well made
Thanks, man! More on the way…
Love Burroughs. went through a crazy heavy phase in my 20s and i credit him w/ teaching me the elements of style in writing even better than Strunk and White ✨
Don't forget his post-apocalyptic tale, Wild Boys: A Tale of the Dead. It's actually the story that the song and music video, The Wild Boys by Duran Duran is loosely based upon.
Excellent, clear, cogent interpretation of a timely urgent warning. By chance, I heard again today Barry McGuire's classic "Eve of Destruction" which, like Koyaanisqatsi, seemed eerily contemporary.
Is their anyway of finding out for sure what the aspect ratio is for this movie..the 16:9 is always shown but their is also a 4:3 version that has far better composition..the 16:9 is heavily cropped top and bottom
That’s a really good question. Your best guess would be to check what it says in the Criterion edition, but that’s not too easily available…
@ReframedYT i have that version and even though it says its approved by the director i have my doubts..criterion have put out discs before approved by the director were colors andvthints have been added
A junkie could do anything good or have any contribution to society whatsoever, wait what??!! The real unfortunate news about boroughs was that he was stuck on methadone for the rest of his life poor guy. I wish you could have taken Sublocade back then it would have truly changed his life. Saved mine after 2 years of oxycontin addiction and eight surgeries than 18 years of heroin addiction 2 years of fentanyl addiction then 2 years of methadone and finally 4 months of Sublocade to nothing. Sublocade is a truly miracle drug that changes the wiring (for the better) in your brain and gets you off of opiates forever without ever having to use any more opiates for the rest of your life. Methadone sucks and is soul-sucking it will numb your soul to the very core. I was very spiritual and into art before even when I was on heroin but when I got on methadone all of that stopped. It all started coming back and I became the person I was before and I'm into art again I'm spiritual again I'm therapy you name it. God bless Sublocade ❤❤❤
