I just bought an M2 16” air about 2 months ago. It’s the first laptop I’ve owned in over 10 years. I hardly even use it, whereas I use my desktop and iPad far more often. The laptop just takes up too much space. It doesn’t fit well on the desk and I was trying to use it laying on the couch last night while my iPad was on the charger…it wasn’t working out very well.
I did use it for a zoom call earlier in the day, that was working good. I just like the desktops for doing work, and holding a tablet in my hands for casual.

The best way to decide is to go in the Apple store and get a feel for either one. I was pretty set on getting a Mac Studio until I went into the store. I tried the studio first and then went over to the MacBook. The second I started typing using the space black MacBook I instantly knew it was the one. I was surprised at how obvious the decision was when I actually went into the store. My favorite thing about laptops is if you ever need to go back to reference an old computer you can simply open it up and start using it, but if you have an old desktop you need to have a monitor, keyboard, power supply, and mouse to plug into before you can even look for an old file or do anything.

It’s known now that the MBP 14” will suffer from thermal throttling after a period of time and you will hear the fan spin up. Whereas this is not an issue with the Mac Studio. It will perform better over an extended period of time and it will do so quietly.

What an outstanding video, KE. I know I'm late to the party, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Your broadcast skills on camera are so apparent; it is quite a talent. I'm guessing RUclips is not your first time doing this; if it is then it is even more impressive. It's just nice to get a professional, informative broadcast about Apple products. You would think there are plenty of channels that do that, and certainly plenty of channels cover Apple, but there is always some twist to those channels that make them less desirable to watch, IMO. Your channel has no such issues. Have a great week man.

I bought a 16 inch MBP with 12 core M3 Pro chip, 18 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. I chose it over a base model M2 Max Studio. Considering that the MBP came with a keyboard, a larger track pad than the 14” MBP, and Touch ID, (none of which comes with the Mac Studio), I figured that the price for both computers was about the same if I added a trackball and keyboard with Touch ID. I don’t plan on using the MBP away from my desk at home, but the portability might be useful in the future. And based on multiple reviews, the larger chassis on the 16” seems to run cooler with less fan noise than the 14”model.
As far as the display is concerned, it is awesome. It gives me a super high resolution monitor for my recording studio apps. It isn’t the size of an Apple Studio Display, but it does have about the same display quality. And it came with the MBP. Free.

I love my mac mini from 2012 (4core intel, 16Gb, 1T drive), use it for software development; coding, running a debugger, virtualization and docker - its really good. I prefer it to my mac book pro - given to me as a work machine, on paper the pro should run circles around the mini but does not. Ive been looking to replace my mini and trying to justify $2300 for the specs I want on the new mini vs. 2800 for the 14" pro (spec w/ 32 GB, 1T SSD, +1 cpu). It comes down to portability, do I need it? I have other laptops... So, thanks for this video!

I've got a 16" M1 MBP and love it. But when working at my desk I still prefer using a desktop Mac like an iMac. Right now I'm still using a 2013 21.5" iMac for stuff like browsing, emails, discord, ect. An Apple reseller had a 2020 27" iMac i5, 8GB ram, 512GB SSD new for $999 the other day. I know it's an intel Mac but for what I do it would be plenty fast and a big step up from my current iMac. And those 5K displays are so good. I wish Apple sold either a standalone 24" display or a cheaper 27" without all the extra junk most people don't care about.

This is great! I’m thinking of upgrading because I’m starting to do more video work, and my 2019 MacBook Pro is not cutting it (overheating and pretty simple videos are crashing premier pro). I was thinking I would get the m2 studio to avoid these types of headaches, but it sounds like the m3 MacBook Pro is capable of editing 4K video without noticeable difference? I’d prefer to stay on one computer for portability reasons.

  • @tarantula23

i think it would really depend on whether you had a good laptop already, in that case you may want to have a solid home base machine, you can always keep them both synced, instead of getting another laptop only slightly better, as with most apple stuff, than the previous models (which you may not even notice any performance gain despite the figures on paper). i would go with what allowed me to have the most amount of memory for the buck, as if you do any large file work, that will be very important - not having to have to use a hub is also nice... (sd card readers are always iffy as basically when you get one built in, it is just a usb device internally connected and the problem with that is most card readers prefer the sd card to be inserted before they are plugged in to a a usb port - the issue with apples built in studio one is likely a software-hardware issue (port does not initiate the mount or reset after use) which may require a firmware fix if possible (when you use an sd card in the camera, you power off the camera, insert card, and power back on). anyway, whenever i get a new macbook pro, it is always a performance disappointment from what i expected over what i already had - keep in mind when laptops get hot, they throttle so the performance will likely degrade when you start using the gpu, ssd, and ram quite a bit - it will add enough extra heat to cause the cpu to run in low performance mode... so there is you argument for the studio with it's great ventilation for continuous heavy use.

I'm a photographer and used the M1 Max Studio for a couple of weeks while my 2020 Intel i5 MacBook Pro was in the shop. I have this torture test that is from a client project. To export several hundred images in different sizes.
The Intel machine takes about 25 minutes to finish the project on the Intel machine. The Mac Studio took LESS THAN 5 minutes! Which is even more impressive as the test has several 100MB+ TIFF files. And even better, takes just a little longer over a 10Gb/s network connection than if all the files were local.
I could never find the memory bandwidth specs for my Intel laptop. But I'm sure it's less than what you stated in your video. I was using an M1 MacBook Air for another project and with a measly 8GB of RAM, could run circles around my 2x more expensive Intel MacBook Pro. Amazing little machine and probably just fine for most office needs. Except maybe if you need dual-monitors....
Right now, at this level, it's really all about preference. I love the Mac Studio because it keeps things tidy on the desktop. I hate cables and docks like what I'm using now. And there is a cost to that and potential compatibility issues. It happens. Even with reputable companies. And I'll get a heavily discounted, M1 Max laptop... It's totally fine for remote, creative needs....
    Great video!

The Studio wouldn't be the only Apple product to have ports that work intermittently. The MagPort on my old 2012 MacBook Pro still works fine, but the one on my M1 MacBook Pro worked only four times before it began not working most of the time. Fortunately, the charger still works fine when using a USB-C cable/port.

At the time I couldn’t afford the M1 Mac Studio so I have bypassed it, but I did get the Studio display which is expensive but great quality. That replaces my 27inch iMac but in a more expensive but more flexible way.

realistically for most dev's even a base mac air metal is fine especially if you're not running compiles. for most general FE web dev you're not going to be doing much more than a transpile since you're really only dealing with JS. For some of us "lucky" few who are building DL models, it's completely different, your question is mainly how big a model can i fit and train at any sort of reasonable time, then also inference with different size models. Even here base mac metals are ok, for up to 7b models if 4 bit quantized (barely ok). The very temporary goal for NLP/LLM tasks, because it can all change in the AI world in a day, is what mac would fit a 70b non quantized model which is something I'd like to see too. Full size vision models, I just basically give up, they're far too big to do anything realistic on consumer hw. you jsut have to go to the cloud and that's the basic point. is it even worth trying to get a machine that can do some DL tasks locally or just completely give up and do it on a cloud GPU.

I’m wondering if I should return the Mac mini and just use the MacBook as a desktop computer in clamshell mode , as it would also give me portability when I take pictures out of town , as I can download my Sd cards and review my photos also .

This will kill the battery that could be a reason to go for the MAc studio. I have this experience with my 15" 2,9 Quad core 2017 model. Too bad you didn't address the obvious : fans and noise.
I would like to get the macBook for portability but I feel like, since I'm mostly working on a desk, I would benefit more from the Studio in terms of noise.
I often put my computer to intense workload and I need it to remain as quiet as possible, as long as possible.
But, so far, all comparisons are focusing on performance and rare are the videos tackling the fan noise problem.

I went with the 16" M3 Pro with 36 GB unified memory, mainly for my web development tasks (managing tons of Chrome tabs, Docker, VS Code, Figma, iOS Simulators, and other browsers for testing). Additionally, I'll use it occasionally for photo and video editing. In my use case, I believe it's the best choice over the M3 Max. While the power of the M3 Max looks impressive, I doubt it will make a noticeable difference for my workflow. Hoping I made the right choice: 16" M3 Pro instead of the 16" M3 Max Base.

It does not matter to most people. Hyped fictional benchmarks gives you an idea like you said. One should not decide from thouse numbers. Many other say if you know you nedd it - you know. And then they are not watching this video. They know. I think you are right with your assumptions that ports portability color battery should be the becaons. I would go for the M3 Pro 18GB and 512 GB storrage. That is not overkill - and you will not run out of anyting anytime soon. Most say that just owing a M-series you are alreadt on the winning team. Im om a i9 2 months before the M1 was released. I might go for a M3 AIR right now. The M3 Pro is probalby doulbe the price... but my i9 does what it need to. Warning my hands and simulate a jet-take off for no reason ;). The fans are soooo loud hahah - great video.

If you buy a new machine fairly regularly, within about 5 years, then this isn't such an issue, but another factor is the OS support for the hardwares lifespan. I still have some great Macbooks that run well but the latest OS versions are not supported on the hardware. So if the specs and price are super close, factor in how long it'll be supported.

    • @KyleErickson
      @KyleErickson  5 месяцев назад +1

That really depends on how you use your machine, and it's really hard to answer. I will say that Macs have gotten much battery at power management over the last 3-4 years, especially when plugged in. It used to be that if you'd left your Mac plugged in all the time at a desk, you'd kill the battery in a relatively short amount of time, but now they're really good at keeping the levels at a point where that never happens. If you're running off of battery power if you try and keep your battery between 20-80% charge, these should last you a very long time.
