The Benoist Berthiot 70mm f1.8 is a very rare lens and it will be hard to find, but you can find many interesting projector lenses online.

so dreamy, I reckon a lens like this with a cinema housing would do really well in a rental house
For dream sequences or flash backs it would be great in a cinema housing, maybe someone could create a 3D printed protoype
Indeed, it really would be an excellent "dream sequence" or "flash-back" style lens. Just need a helicoid with low enough resistance for a follow-focus unit to cope with.
@@MathieuStern I was thinking; if only Villeneuve had used this lens for the "flashfowards" in 'Arrival'.
If you make them, you could sell them!!
I’ll be your first customer and advertiser!
This is amazing!!!
The big brands should create a special edition lens with swirly bokeh
I really liked the combo of visuals and music in this episode! Neeeat stuff!
I noticed the swirl is less obvious on non foliage objects. I like how it draws my eyes towards the center frame.
I think it has a lot to do with distance and contrast.
Words can not descrie how beautiful your cinematography is here! Thank you for making such beautiful art, and showing off a beautiful lens, but its not just the lens making it so special!
Nice to see the light of life from another side of this lens, in a reverse reality order.
Thanks, Weird Optical Master.
I can't wait for the course! So excited!
Will definitely buy that course when you're finished making it!!
I’m stoked about an upcoming course
Caption idea: “I brought a camera to my dream and made this”.
Probably the dreamiest lens ever
I am looking forward to your videos on adapting the projector lenses! Can't wait!
So so so excited for this projector lens course!
Im really deep in the photography rabbit hole after trying to find the best camera for my gf. now im thinking of going into that hobby as well
You always inspire me. thanks❤
I saw the short first and I thought "even more swirly than M42 Helios 80mm :) And my second thought was "very cinematic". Beautiful lense!
Nice!
Keep up the good work!
I think you have found the Rembrandt of lenses!
Its beautiful and always love your cinematography and how you use every lens
Thank you so much 😀
It must be extremely strange if it stands out among other lenses you have reviewed.
In the family of projector lenses this is the most swirly i tested
@@MathieuSternwhat is the swirliest you tested when anything goes? (ie. not only projector lenses)
It's the best.
It's cool and amazing.
Very warm lens
great work
Damn I dig your "way" of photography. You inspired me to finally cut off the rear housing to expose the rear element of my projector lens and generally determine infinity focus . . .then shoved it in a section of a Minolta extension ring with some black craft foam to take up the slop to "zoom focus". Gorgeous images; very high level of correction fer sure.
Very cool. it's similar to my Kodak Cine lens, but that has a huge vignette since it's for 16mm film. but the extra space you get on the edge has crazy swirls.
Fantastic!
Love the bird shots !
The Navistar 75mm f/1.3 C-mount has a similar picture. Try the Olympus F.Zuiko Auto-S 38 mm f/ 1.8 on full frame gives a very interesting Swirly Bokeh with good contrast and color
Hi Mathieu! Been a while since I was this early to a video. Still love your content (and still very open to getting adopted)
Blow my mind everytime..
Those f pulls ...❤
Fine lens!
Hi Mathieu, didn't you make a video about the Meyer Optik Biotar 58mm f/1.5 lens? I can't find it. Now I'm not sure if I only dreamt about it :')
Dream like, so impressive.
Amazing Mathieu, beautiful effect, draws the eye to subject in a very subtle way.
I'm surprised you haven't been poached by Hollywood!
Me too ! lol
So cool
how strong is the field curvature for the focus?
I have a 60s for 16mm motion picture. Meopta Openar (I have a full set) but the 40mm f/1.8 gives a bit of swirly as well. It covers mft and I haven't tried larger sensors.
It looks like a 35mm projector? What size image was it designed to project? I'm guessing 3 elements in the lens (maybe 2 no need for a relay), no f-stops, shooting wide open, zero depth of field because it didn't need any. 75-100 focal length? Would love to see some festival lighting in the background at night.
if wasn't so hazy, it would be nice. Thanks for the experimentation :)
Do 85mm f2.8 35mm slide protectors lenses swirl? I see so many different slide protectors with the same focal length & aperture
to swirly it needs to be a fast lens, so 2.8 will not swirl. you need to stay under F2
What makes it look like that?
J'ai vu passer un Benoist Berthiot 80mm f1,8. Savez-vous si, question bokeh, il donne la même chose que le vôtre ? Merci d'avance.
any proyector lens recomended for dslrs? since they have a longer flange distance u guess its bit harder to come by with lenses that can be used
Longer flange distances can be easier to cope with than ones that are too short. I obtained a nice looking Schneider Kreuznach Super Cinelux but it just falls short. Mirrorless users have an easier time in general as mirror-clash is limiting factor. For really long flange distances with lenses that have screw style barrels you can often re-purpose the original sleeve to give coarse focus and leave the fine setting to a dedicated helicoid unit.
@@TheSynthnut i found a small positive projector with a simple disassemble that fits perfectly with my extention tubes for my canon dslr, but when trying it without attaching it to it in any way, it doesnt bring out any distinct characteristics like other lens. Looking around it seems like a lot of projectors have that same lens. It is an ernolux 75mm f2.5.
I want to get more cool bokeh or flare lenses, but no idea how to find them, or at least what the names of them are.
Wow 3D PoP
thats a lot of swirl :)
That bokeh quality is so soft that it makes helios bokeh very ugly. Shame they didnt make more of these at the time. Feels closer to something hollywood would use than a helios or even petzval
Yummy
Another fail. No Nikon F-mount.
the real fail is to buy a Nikon camera
