- Partly because of a leak and partly because I never liked the tiles anyway, I have refurbished my shower cubicle with shower panels, stuck over the old tiles. This is the tale of how I did it.

In order to avoid having the glue continuing to come out after you finish squeezing, you have to trip the lever, or twist the plunger, or whatever it takes to release the pressure -- depends on your particular glue gun how this is done.
Cheers! Ha, I do (honestly!) know this really, I just didn't press it while holding the gun and waving it at the camera so it kept coming!
@@CruisingTheCut I figured SOMETHING like that - you've too much experience not to have discovered it. LOVE how the shower ended up -- very nice job indeed!
Or purchase a “dripless” caulk gun which for the most part release that pressure for you.
Well I have learnt something, had that problem when trying to seal my windows, thanks for at least educating me!
ive always watched your channel at 2x speed. unless you say a word that is uk'ed then i'll put it at a lower speed
Not too many DIY people can do an awkward and difficult job with such a sense of humour and make so many smile maybe even have a good laugh or two.
I'm amazed I kept my sense of humour too!!
"Several months ago when I was sitting here on the toilet in the bathroom..." That is how all good stories should start.
Well it is certainly different.
Hahaha, that's why I like this channel..
I have my best ideas on the loo. Lol
Much better than "once upon a time"
😂😂😂
I am unable to sit and watch most 1 hour Netflix shows, but I am able to sit for 1 hour to watch you refurbish your shower!! Your ability to tell a tale is absolutely amazing!!
Why. Why are you videos so compelling? I've just spent 49 minutes watching a grown man faff around inside his shower. And loved every minute of it. :)
Faff is the word
I'm one of the 90%. We simply enjoy watching anyone working. Anyone other than ourselves that is ;-)
Amen to that.
Well now, this is the first video from cruising the cut that I will not be looking at, l not only hate DIY but can't even bring myself to watch others do it. I'll pass on this and wait for the next one.
Dear dear man, it is so good to see you. Yes there are lots of narrorboat videos, but its YOU, that makes your videos so entertaining, and watchable. More, please
Aww, thank you :-)
Hear hear.
Loved watching that, if ever I have a shower cubicle to reline.... I will remember this and get someone else to do it.
😅🤣
Wise
There are those who can't read a tale off a book. And there are those who can make the analysis and restoration of a shower seem like the most epic saga in the history of mankind. Such charisma.
Hi David the reason 90% of people said yes is because we really enjoy watching your videos and you are great company! Thank so much. Cheers J
Aww, thanks :-)
Having 15,000 views in the first day on a video "...refurbishing my shower cubicle" just shows the power you have David due in no small part to your professional experiences. It really shows in every video you produce. Make what you like of course but I will keep holding out until your next canal travel video. Thanks and all the best sir.
Oh my goodness!!!! My husband and I are big DIY people and we absolutely adored this video. We howled with laughter! Hubby thinks you're a very lucky man because you can take time to consider a problem without a wife telling you HOW you should be doing it! We love David!!!!!
I enjoyed watching this. Your DIY project went exactly the same as most of my own, where I start off positive and am then reduced to passive aggressive mutterings coupled with exaggerated metaphors whilst doing my level best not to swear. Very funny to watch when it's someone else doing it. You've also achieved a nice looking finish. Well done.
I was impressed that a big rubber mallet didn't get involved, always my go-to when things don't quite fit together square
You have a rare talent to make me watch almost anything and with a smile on my face
It might be a bit disconcerting to an introvert like you David, but all your fans (including me) feel like they know you and like you very much. From our point of view you are our friend. Feeling that way isn’t unusual for us Internet denizens and you should be quite proud of your quite huge number of friends. We all genuinely find you nice and funny, a quite exceptional fellow. Cheers from Alberta, Canada and thanks for the videos.
Ah, thank you. I'm horribly unpleasant in real life ;-)
@@CruisingTheCut Your humble opinion of yourself is just part of your charm. Get over it, you are not an ordinary person. You are exceptional.
David, I'll apologize in advance here, but I laughed and laughed at this video!! Especially when you took a break to scream. I love your sense of humor! You ARE improving your DIY skills with each project. The reason I appreciate your DIY videos so much is that they are so reminiscent of the projects my husband and I do together. We never have all the parts we need....there is always SOME aspect that makes the project unlike the straightforward directions....the directions vastly underestimate the time it will take for the project.
Paradoxically, this is one of the most memorable videos I have ever seen on RUclips. Just an ‘ordinary’ bloke ,who’s not very good at DIY, taking on a job that nearly breaks him, but somehow prevailing. Done with self effacing honesty and humour. All of life is here. 🙏
I am a simple man. I see a Cruising the Cut notification, I click.
Brother, we just like you. Your lifestyle, your content, your dry yet warm sense of humor makes pretty much everything you post is worth watching. You dont take yourself too seriously but you have the guts to put yourself out there. I never thought I would find narrow boating this interesting. I am so glad I was wrong.
Thank you, that's very kind :-)
Yes. David is just the kind of guy that you would like for a neighbor, and his videos are like enjoyable little chats with your neighbor- if your neighbor was Bob Ross, and lived on a boat..
I have netflix ,prime and now tv...its 21.50 on a Saturday and watching you sorting your shower out is better viewing than everything on TV tonight.
Haha that doesn't say much for the state of the streaming channels!!
your frustration and annoyance with the every day DIY hiccups we all face is probably recognized by everyone watching your VLOG, i don't know anyone that has been to a DIY store and got al the correct fixtures and fittings in one visit, your honest video of the project is a brilliant watch and thoroughly entertaining thank you
Like an episode of Miss marple meets physco, welcome back mate.
This is like the Bob Ross of boat repair.
Happy little repairs
Maybe a list of different grout shades ? Prussian blue ? Post office red ? Mmm ?
Not sure if it was intentional, but this episode was hilarious! Great deadpan humor!
We have just spent several years totally renovating a 120 year old French longere, which now has 4 shower rooms, so i absolutely understand your frustration, screaming, use of great British expletives and need for alcohol. We also used "plastic panel" at an angle, but only cut the back and honeycomb leaving the thin front cover intact, then bent to to required angle, filled the open V shape in the rear with gunge and fixed into place. It negated the need to try and join half cut panels. Maybe you could try this when you next upgrade your shower.....lol. Anyway, great vid, loved your comments and the job looks perfectly acceptable. Stay safe, all the best/
Haha. David you can even make DIY funny!🤣. Honestly it does look much better than the old tiles. Well done. Enjoy that G&T you earned it👍🏻
Honestly - sitting here laughing out loud - you are hysterical no matter what! Thoroughly enjoyed this!!
I don't know if you could hear me. But as I was watching your video, I was right behind you as your assistant shouting advice to you each step of the way. Ha!
Through all your frustrations your dry sense of humour shone like a beacon. Utter brilliant video, made me laugh like an episode from ‘Fawlty Towers’. Now when you sit on the throne, you will only be able visually imagine those old sea shell tiles creaking & cracking under variable temperature fluctuations. 👏
I’m no longer a twit who tweets. Birds Tweet. I’m not a bird.
So I enjoyed this ramble, musings and fiddle fixing.
👍🏻✊🏻
I have just found this and not yet watched it. My anticipation is boundless. Rationing the viewing is a necessity, David is a real gem in video production, and I need to stretch it out.
Don't worry, Sidney - he stretched the prog out for you!
I don't watch this channel for the projects, I watch it for you, David, I'm sure I speak for many too - this is really the untold secret of RUclips - being yourself. What a wonderful 50 minutes of drama infused with humour. I think we had the full Hollywood story arc there. When you were in the depths of despair, I felt your shared pain and I rooted for you to see it through and you did!
Don't waste your time with Twitter polls regarding your content. We'd watch you read from the telephone book. You just have a pleasant personality. Thanks for the video. I hope for one every day!
The shower on your boat shall forever be known to me as the Gungeon.
I love that!!
You: This is gonna be a long video, me: Instant pressing pause, and going to the kitchen to make some coffee.👍
Very wise.
I got snacks, too.
Don't berate yourself - that's transformed the appearance and no doubt banished the leaks. Mission accomplished! 😎😎👍
Well done DAVID, over 49000 people would sooner watch you tiling than actually watch someone boating. says a lot....
It certainly does!!
You are now a pro and can start a side business of doing the same thing for other boat owners :-)
Can't believe I just watched the whole thing. And enjoyed it! Learned a new word or two (hysteresis), and am firmly convinced my husband would have bailed on the project early on. He would have just resorted to duct tape. Kudos, great job, and terrific photography, editing, narration, humor, self-deprecation, all of it!
Duct tape rules!
As a seventy year old woman in Australia I have no clue about refurbishing a canal boat shower recess but as a sewer I understand your frustrations. The thumb of rule is you measure twice, cut once. I am constantly dismayed as to the depths of my stupidity while trying out something new or out of my comfort zone with sewing, however, if I hang on in there with it I usually have the job done. Your job looks terrific, glad there were no temper tantrums where you kicked the boards to bits (not while up against the tiles) and gave up. Now every time you have a shower you can feel a sense of accomplishment. Well done.
please dont tale offense of my comment but this is one of the funniest videos i seen in a while.love your channel.
At Last, A real DIY show. Kept my attention through the entire 49 minutes and 11 seconds. 10 out of 10. Nice to see you, once more, in your proper place, shining out from the corner of my little flat in Stroud.
Thank you!
This one is still my favorite. The descent into madness, the crazy hair - cracks me up. ❤️
The madness is so relatable!😅
Thank you for sharing.
I am 63 years old.
I have been sitting behind a computer for the last 35 years, so I myself am today functionally useless to society.
Before that?
I was very handy - DIY projects everywhere (mechanic, carpenter, cement, roofing, flooring, plumbing, landscaping - the works)
So I admire your grit!
And for what its worth - I think you did a brilliant job!
Thank you!
Of course I’m watching this video again because I really love listening to you explain the process. 😂😂👵🏻🇺🇸👍🏻
I hope you won't take this wrong: my husband and i laughed SO MUCH during this video -- but only because we've been there! We thought you showed commendable restraint in your choice of vocabulary.
David, whether you like it or not, most of us would probably watch you sip tea while sitting in your chair reading a book for 4hrs :)
See ruclips.net/user/DavidReadsStories 😀
The bagpipe reference is spot on. Because just as the bagpipe keeps playing after you've stopped blowing air, the glue gun keeps shooting out glue long after you've stopped squeezing the trigger.
Having done some home DIY in the bathroom, I really enjoyed this. Nothing, ever, is as simple as it seems to be in the beginning. Add a cramped space and every problem is compounded. Turned out great though so job well done.
You are hilarious! I kept thinking, I sure wish I was there to lend a hand. Well done you!
Thank you!
I sympathize with your frustration, but this is a gold mine of one liners and it really made my afternoon.
Don't kick yourself David, it looked absolutely great when you'd finished. A great video which we thoroughly enjoyed. We found your videos during the first lock down and binged on them till we were up to date, now you feel like part of the family and we look forward to every rendition. Keep it up.
Oh David, I've so missed your narrowboat DIY videos! The entertainment value didn't disappoint and the end result looks great, well worth the frustration that all DIY projects create.
I had a shot every time David said “gunge.” I am on my 3rd liver.
GUNGE
@@CruisingTheCut Oh my!!! The affable and polished exterior hides an absolute savage within!
Watched this tonight. Who knew shower renovation could be so entertaining! I can very much relate to the DIY rule that nothing ever goes perfectly as planned. My other DIY rule is to double the length of time I think I'll take! Good video. Nice job 👍
I had no idea at the outset it was going to be a comedy.......very entertaining, thoroughly enjoyed it
So good to see you again...
Hope you are well...
You’ve been missed, I speak for many!!!
Perfect accompaniment to my evening meal. Gin poured, food ready .... here we go !
Gin! Sorted :-)
@@CruisingTheCut Cheers !
You are always entertaining David, whatever you do!!!😂 Good job looks good!👏
Thank you
He's that one uncle in the family that everyone just loves to be around
I have Never Enjoyed watching anybody repairing their life So Much as watching You! You are So Much FUN! Many Many Thanks for All the Laughs, Joy, & Learning!
Thank you
Hello David. I wanted to share my story with you. When Covid hit in the US early last year my husband came across your channel and he liked your video so we started to watch all the videos from the beginning. We were in lockdown. I did jigsaw puzzles and my husband drank tea while watching. We binged watched all your videos and we absolutely loved cruising the cut. Now we are re-watching it and now everytime we have it on I have this uncontrollable urge to take out my puzzles and we both drink tea while watching. It's now like a favorite series to watch. I just wanted to say thanks 😊
Ah, thank you so much!
For anyone who doesn't know, "a night on the tiles" is British for carousing. It's like the American "a night on the town", and might be based on cats up on the roof tiles, rejoicing. (I think if it's cats, the tiles referred to may actually be the toppers of brick walls.)
Wife, just seen the video, her comments was, "Well if he can do, you can do it", bang goes my fishing weekends for the next month.
Oops
I'm laughing so much, I almost fell off the couch.
I enjoy,. I like hearing your venting
Looks well David. Only 2 things I would have done differently.
Where you had to make the horizontal cut halfway down the wall, I would have scored the panel at the back and flexed it at the angle change. This would have left an unbroken surface. You could have possibly done the same for the corner moulding,
And I think I would just cut a few inches off the top of the vertical shower rail so it would fit the existing screw holes.
Regardless, it looks good and more importantly, should be very low maintenance.
….. and I’m so glad you went with s new rail lol…
Cheers. I didn't think of the scoring the panel back. As for the rail, it's such a cheap piece of plastic, it felt really brittle like it would shatter if I tried cutting it.
Good to see you again!
Hey, thanks!
Thank you for allowing us the privilege of joining you in your shower! What fun! Keep up the good work. You’ve made my day.💕🥰💕🥰💕🥰💕🥰💕🥰💕🥰💕
A short break and he’s back! You really have your mojo back! One of the most entertaining vids you’ve made! It may have been the degreaser mind you 🤪
Hubby and I finished watching all your current videos just yesterday, after binge watching for about 3 weeks. Thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining and informative. So much better than regular TV.
Incidentally I hope you had more than 1 G&T after finishing that shower! Was certainly well deserved.
We look forward to whatever happens next and wish you well. ☺️
"I'm fed up with this project, and I'm fed up with my own incompetence" - I feel your pain. Great work though, brilliant video. Looking forward to many more ;-)
Never thought I'd watch another person scrape old silicone out of a shower and be entertained. Well done chap. Hope it was worth the 2000 plus comments you're having to read through.
Haha thank you
David, I'm at the 45th minute watching you berate yourself. You're such a perfectionist. It looks great! Stop browbeating yourself. Something I do appreciate watching is how you manage to work it through in your mind ahead of time. I'd say you're a good example of how to do a DIY job.
You Englishmen are so polite and yet so funny 😆😂
I guess I was laughing at your expense, but honestly that’s what content is all about!!
Good job. Nice to see another video. Sit down and have a cup of tea for a job done.
DIY is interesting in prospect, wonderful in retrospect, but a complete pain in the neck, ar*e, back, etc while you're actually doing it. Especially when you do something new. Well done David, for the job and for the video. Parts of it were great fun to watch, so thanks also for the sacrifice :)
I'm sorry, it's not kind to laugh at the troubles of others but I confess I laughed out loud a couple of times whilst watching this DIY project of yours! So glad that I found this channel of yours, so glad in fact that I went back to video No.1 and look forward to many more.
There are indeed many more, having been making videos for eight years or so - most of them not DIY but there are a smattering, especially lately as you will see!
That was utterly delightful. My enjoyment of it has made me worried that I may have sadistic tendencies. I thought the finished job looked bloody good.
Well done! That is one sharp looking shower. Really like the marble patterning.👍💕
England expects every man to do his duty. you Sir deserve the sealant award with extra screw holes . Well done lad Rule Britannia. Regards from Alberta Canada.
My dad used to use a phrase when it came to discrepancies between your measurement and actual length, "close enough for government work." It looks like the leakage issue is resolved, and a more attractive shower has been gained. Good job, David.
This was hilarious to watch! Watching you do this reminds me why I hate DIY, I’d be making all the same mistakes and probably give up and call in the experts. Sorry I shouldn’t laugh, it just felt good to watch somebody else go through the pain I get during such projects. Rich
Great job David I admire your dogged determination.
Well.
I've never seen or heard of someone makin' such an intriguing plot from just a shower cubicle collapse.
It is Agatha Christie quality. My eyes and my mind were glued (!) to the screen!
And all the philosophy..!
Loved it!
Thanks & Keep it up!
Proving once again you are fearlessly willing to attack DIY projects of considerable scale. Thanks for sharing. This one was epic. Rest up & enjoy.
Why is watching you doing 49 minutes of DIY / borderline bodging so thoroughly entertaining? I guess it's because you include all the struggles, mistakes and solutions which we can all identify with. You simultaneously inspire me to want to get a narrowboat and to avoid it at all costs because of all the difficult maintenance. How you managed to work so effectively in such a confined space AND film it is a wonder. Good job!
Yes, they're awkward beasts, narrowboats
Mate, you got annoyed late in the video about your own incompetence. But just stop for a sec and look at the great job you did considering you’re not a carpenter, plumber, tiler, etc. None of those are your trade, but still you got stuck in and resolved your problems and the end result looks great and will last for years. I’d say it’s a job well done.
Nice, your perseverance has paid off. Looks much better than before, good work!
Thank you!
New shower room - brilliant! New cratch cover - done. Lockdown holiday in the car park - done. What’s next? Don’t tell me a conservatory on the stern?. I love you vlogs, you make me smile.
This was fun to watch, as my husband and I have tackled may DIY projects over the years. Your sense of humor kept us chuckling!
David, you made attempting baking bread quite a treat to watch. I'm quite convinced that you could make reading the phone book entertaining, and am quite looking forward to watching this.
It may yet happen...
@@CruisingTheCut Bring on your worst, sir!
Just finished watching you refitting your van and now this? What a treat!
What can I say David. This is honestly the Citizen Kane of narrowboat DIY shower cubicle refurbishment films. Bravo. Start writing your Oscar acceptance speech now!
Seriously, as always with your videos, inexplicably enjoyable.
We enjoyed it. I can’t imagine talking and trying to film while going through all the frustration of DIY. Thank you!
His thumbnails are some of the best non clickbait clickbait I’ve ever seen 💀
Ever so glad to see your still alive and putting out new videos!
He's on Vandemonium (YT Channel) with his camper-van exploits - eg Lockdown car parking.
Still here!
I had all sorts of advice about how you could have done it, but then I realized watching you futter through it is what makes watching you so entertaining. Thanks for a very enjoyable three quarters of an hour!
Honestly in tears. It's like watching a vicar, in a tiny space, doing somewhat risky comedy, do DIY. Hilarious.
Very nice! It looks much better than the tiles did. And no more grout lines to get grungy. A job well done! 👍
Thank you! Yes, the absence of grout is going to be heavenly hahaha
P.s you might want to continue to seal under the shower door where it meets the tray incase it finds another hole.
Cheers, there's no need to seal under there, the shower tray lip prevents any leakage
There was I thinking I was the world's worst at DIY. Thank you David you've made me feel so much better. I am looking forward to your next project.
You may still yet be the worst, of course 😂
