    • @CameraBryan
      @CameraBryan 3 года назад +7

      The duct tape started during concert tours when Keith Moon couldn't keep the headphones on while playing on stage. He needed the headphones as monitors to hear the rest of the band. Bob Heil, who's company Heil Sound was doing the sound system, came up with the tape idea. (Bob Heil's also the one who made the talk boxes for Peter Frampton and Joe Walsh.)

      I was just 6 when I watched Top of the Pops with the Who playing "I can See for Miles" He was the only drummer who mashed his kit-all the others just seemed to do tapping with a few light hits on the cymbals-I loved it . His kit was well beaten up! Now I think about how totally original and powerful is the drum track to ICSFM-it's not background, it's part of the tune. All his stuff was. There's been no one close to it in the near 50 years since KM's gone.

      The 1970 Isle of Wight footage is a master class - especially Pete doubling as sound engineer.
      But whenever Keith Moon is in frame, it’s incredibly hard to pay attention to anyone else because his playing is so… surreal 🤷🏻‍♀️ (for lack of any better adjectives) - like a force of nature 😮

    When you went to see the WHO you went to see Keith the 'juggler' too! In the early days at the WHO shows he had sticks flying in the air, catching them on beat as they destroyed their instruments by the climax of the show. He whirled and twirled those sticks to the beat. He had sticks that reflected light so you could see them. He went through quite a bit of drum sticks in a show. I'm 70 years old this was back in the 60's. It was all a part of the show with Pete doing his gymnastics.

    Technical skill is something anyone can learn. It's not important. Creativity is. Don't forget he played like no other drummer had ever played before him in the sixties: loud, wild, unpredictable, at the forefront. He is the first rock drummer, in that aspect. There is not a drummer on this world today that doesn't owe him thanks for making the drums MORE than just a way to keep time, including Bonham or Ringo for example, who've both admitted to this many times.

    Keith was not able to continue the energy he has when he was younger. Especially since he had the energy of drugs fueling his playing for so many years. As he was trying to get off drugs and play clean. He found himself gaining weight and not being to keep up. They even told him if he did not improve his playing he was out of the band. He did a Fine job in this record.
    If he did not die, his playing would have calmed down a bit. At 44 seconds in his timing changes

    When we were learning how to play instruments in the late 70's early 80's, we of course listened to all the greats, Zep, Who, Sabbath, Doors, etc. We never compared, they were all in the same rare air, Bonham, Moon, Ward, Jones, Butler, Entwhistle, etc... I don't understand where it comes from when people feel the need to compare. They were all great and their style helped make the band they were in.

    I have some technical knowledge of drumming. Enough to know that if the Beatles had Neil Peart or Billy Cobham or Dave Weckl for a drummer they would only need one more thing, a drummer! Ringo was absolutely the best and only drummer to get the Beatles sound the push it needed. Perfectly. He was/is beyond a great drummer, he's a fantastic drummer. Having said that, Ringo would be equally as lost behind Miles Davis as Philly Joe Jones would be behind the Beatles.
