I think Mr Bean's narcissistic personality was lost on alot of people. They just saw him as an oddball rather than particularly nasty, plus he did have his sweet moments, e.g. when he reunited the baby with its mother.

Did you watch the video? He literally says he enjoyed playing the character the most at the very beginning of this very short video, and it's spelled out in the sub-titles. He enjoyed PLAYING the character, but he didn't like the personality of the character he was playing.
I'm of the opinion that his 2007 iteration of Mr. Bean was handled well. He may have not been the brightest still, but at least he had courtesy that time around.
