This will sound kinda stupid, but there it goes. 3 and a half years ago a friend gave me a couple of budgerigars (both were about 2-3 years old). When the male died, the female almost dies too, but I started spending a lot of time with her, so she survived (and we get really close). I used to sing her this song every morning since her partner passed away. Yesterday, my little girl died. Thanks a lot for bringing me this song and all these awesome momments.

I find funny how both versions evoke different emotions even being almost the same lyrics. The original feels nostalgic, like someone singing while remebering their homeland, remembering the good old times and missing the beauty of West Virginia while being far away from there. This, instead, sounds joyful, happy, like someone who's retunrning to their homeland after a long time out, celebrating their arrival to the place they called home long time ago and enjoying the fact it didin't changed at all, being the simple, yet comfortable place it used to be in their childhood.
For those of us who grew up in small towns in the country and are now living in the big city, the original and this Japanese version are both great at capturing the desire to return to the simple life of our childhood back home, but knowing that that home only exists in our memories, and that even taking those country roads back to the hometown will never actually take us back "home", ever again.

My sister used to sing this to me at bedtime. Not the English version. The Japanese one. Other than that she didn’t speak Japanese, but this was her favourite movie and we used to watch it together. It’s been five years since I heard this song, and my sister abandoned my family a year ago this month, after a huge misunderstanding. I miss her so much and I don’t know if I’ll ever see her again, but this song is one of the few things I have left of our time together. I hope I’ll see her one day again. I’m not sure I can live without her.
