How to raise a baby hummingbird part 2 of 6

- 10 - 15% of a hummingbird diet consists of insect protein. Here is a technique for getting baby hummingbirds to eat flightless fruitflies (available at PetCo and PetSmart). Put a little honey on a toothpick, catch the flightless frutiflies. If the chick will open its beak, you can gently direct feed (being very careful not to push into the crop). The other way is to let them lick the honey and bugs off like a little anteater. The first way is best as fewer of the bugs escape.
If you are just using sugar water hummingbird mix, you must supplement with insects. If you purchase the Nektar Plus, it has protein in it already.
If you look at the rest of her videos you will find that she is rehabilitating them. She even has a video of her setting them free once they are old enough. She is doing a good thing. Chill out everyone.
You are sadly mistaken. The fledgling in the last video displays behavior that indicates she is in no way prepared to be released. Any professional rehabber can see her weaknesses and would provide this young adult with an additional 2-3 weeks of training and rehab before releasing her into the wild. Moreover, if you look at the comments these videos have generated, you can see it leads people to believe they can raise hummingbirds for fun. Tragically, it's the birds that suffer so heavily from such misguided thinking.

@@wildliferescueavianlover208 I raised a hummingbird no problem. Maybe its because my sisters a rehabilitator but I still took care of it on my own. Taking care of nature is too ez
@@wildliferescueavianlover208 how can I rehabilitate a hummingbird that was separated from its mom he is flying now and is maybe 3 weeks old. don't know how to release or rehabilitate him, don't think bad of me, a guy takes him far away from home, I ask him where and he doesn't remember, since then I'm feeding him and I want him free. But I don't know how to do that
@wildliferescueavianlover208 As a rehabber surely you know there is a dearth of rehabbers during baby bird season. I have volunteered for rehabbers for a solid decade and I wouldn't wish the stress and difficulty of caring for tiny birds on my worst enemy, but I would rather a bird be raised improperly and have a chance than see it die alone with no help.
That's so awesome how the one flew up to eat, they are super cute and precious >_
Okay, then. I've never seen anyone feed a hovering animal before.
I have an elephant and that is how he gets fed all the time.

fruit flies are not even that disgusting... I mean, up close, sure, they look like flies, but at least they are made out of 100% fruit.

I thought you can't give honey to hummingbirds?
I copied this from an article: Can hummingbirds eat honey? No, honey is not an ideal choice for these birds. Its sticky, syrupy texture can coat their bills and feathers, making it difficult for them to fly or eat. Honey is also more difficult for them to digest than granulated table sugar. Other than honey, maple syrup, molasses, and powdered sugar should also not be used in hummingbird nectar. (Also, certain honey has high fructose corn syrup)

that end tho
Haha, yeah. "Oh, where did he go? Probably sitting on the.... Oooh wow! :D" I was kinda unamused the entire video, no face expressions. But that was sweet.
Who could give a thumbs down for feeding baby birds?
I feed all birds including these beautiful babies.
God created them first👒🐤
Tenderhearted wildlife rehabilitator who think this is torture, or setting up the bird for failure or smthn like that
Hi :) I am taking care of a young Anna humming bird. She hit a window and still can't fly 3 days later but seems alert and drinking store bought nector, I heard the red kind is not good for them so was told to make sugar water at home instead. I have some fruit flies buzzing around in the aquarium I have her set up in but she's not catching any I have tried to put one on her beak. But no luck. I am in a small town and don't have a let so tore with the flies you ha e in the an. So do you have any pointers as knowone seems to be of help. I have phoned a couple wildlife sanctuary and a vet an all have same knowledge as me . They only say give the sugar water, can you help me. She's so sweet and I want her to survive. Right now I keep trying to catch bugs and squish in her sugar water but its not really working hahah she's nt getting proper protein.
Yes she did I had her for a week and she flew away right off my finger when I took her outside for daily excercise and fresh air. I searched for her but she never came back. I seen her in a tree right after she flew away and that was it🌻I was so heartbroken but happy for her🌺I hope she's ok wherever she is🐣
give her eggs and sugar water she will be ok
please DO NOT by hummingbird nectar that is RED, it has been killing hummingbirds. You can just mix 1 part water with 1/4 parts sugar and heat it up in the microwave and wait for it to cool down instead :)
She sounds like such a proud mom when the little one took flight
Gorgeous little precious things
Tell me about they are super adorable!
You’re not supposed to give honey to hummingbirds it’s dangerous for them
thats semi artificial honey, u shouldn't feed them that
Logic Hurts Idiots they’re just letting the person know so next time she’s rehabilitating hummingbirds, she could at least give them better honey
One must admire the people who do this to help baby birds
Honey can kill hummingbird. Highly recommended not to give it to hummingbird
According to some ornithologists, the honey can be dangerous for Hummingbirds. ;)

Not raw honey
I thought you were not supposed to feed honey to humming birds, because it could give them a deadly fungus and it eventually kills them.
All the articles I’ve read say to use only white processed sugar dissolved in water at a 1 to 4 ratio.
I have a question, I found a baby hummingbird, and I'm feeding it with what I saw on your video, but how often do I have to feed it?
I came here because there's two little hummingbirds that seem to wait for their mom on this nest she made on a dangling accessory we have on the back porch. They seemed to have been there for days without flying so I rested a little bird bath nest to the nest in case they needed water (idk about these things and I don't like messing with them but I know they need nectar and the mom brings them food). Eventually right now I got a little water and saw if they wanted some but one of the hummingbirds got scared and flew away so either that one was a baby that learned how to fly or it was the mom (she seemed to bop her head a lot with her mouth open so I'm still unsure whether it was a baby or a mommy). And the other one seemed so still and calm so I tried giving that one water and it worked! Can someone please tell me what I could do and shouldn't do to care for the little one???
understandable, video but try cutting the tip so the bird wouldn't stab it self.
Jonathan Jamil Hernandez I thought exactly the same... I was scared they might get hurt by accident
Jonathan Jamil Hernandez well I guess hummingbird parents have to cut or break the tip of their beak do they don't stab the chick in its throat? Right?
Morons
Here's how they normally feed with the mom's pointy beak: ruclips.net/video/HAainUbDaec/видео.html This one had been coming to the feeder for a couple days but still cheeped for food whenever he heard mom nearby.
Honey kills Hummingbirds
You could get arrested because humming birds are protected by the law
Boring Life ..but remember she is not harming the birds.. In fact she is saving the bird
What are u the cops......?..grow a pair
people can get licenses to raise these guys up actually
Why do you give hummingbirds honey you are killing them hummingbirds can't have honey
I know When I saw it I was like wait what
Honey will cause fungal spores to germinate on their tongue or in their gullet causing them to be unable to retract their tongue, therefore being unable to feed. This is the cause of death for some hummingbirds.
Only if you mix honey with water , honey itself can’t grow bacteria or spores
You have two more now? So cute, what happen to the mother?
Do not feed honey to hummingbirds !
That baby humming bird flying to get some fruit flies is too adorable.
I'm indonesian, and I'm also honey bird lover(colibri)and I like your video,I'm waiting for the upload again
I wanna feed one give me that stick
Wtf. Now all of sudden people know honey kills hummingbirds. You can always expect an expert on RUclips to come out of the woodworks
I just found a humming bird I'm just looking out for him till he is big enough to fly any tips????
Providing protein can be made much simpler. Go to the store and buy some whey protein powder. Mix the whey power in with the nectar. I raised my bird using this method and he was up and away back to nature in no time. That was 50 years ago and I still miss him.
Any rehabber will know honey is not good for these young birds, just like how it is not good for a baby that’s younger than a year old. Rehabbing hummingbirds in the US requires a proper federal and state license too. Otherwise it is illegal.
I saw a hummingbird nest I it closer and the egg look a little broken and the rest was good I was think can the baby still survive if the egg is broken just a little
Lo más adorable que e vistooo
Oh jeez! You are NOT supposed to feed hummingbirds honey. It can cause a fungus to grow on their toung & kill them.
Beautiful, you're amazing!
I have a baby, and she needs my help. I have started her on sugar water just to get her hydrated and fulfilled. I have purchased nectar as well. How do I get fruit flies. I do have a composting in my garden I am going to use honey to lure them and make them stick. Would that be okay

Can you please tell how many times should i feed a baby humming bird in a day????
One of the most hardest bird to feed. But you did it in a best way
thanks, I'm trying to raise two baby birds
Just don't get them close to a praying mantis or they will get eaten lol
Wow! You are so patient feeding them!
This should not do that. Sweet Riesling 2012
No comen miel, les hace daño!!!
honey isn’t good for hummingbirds
i was told we cannot give honey 1 part sugar ,1 part grape jelly, 3 parts water, so which is true, some professionals that raise injrd hummingbirds until they can be released, say that the stores dont have the proper nutrients, we ourselve have to make a mixture ourselves, bugs are best protein . see we found one and so far we have got thousands of the bugs off the pine tree n mixed it into the sweet mixture. we followed this from all videos n researching hummingbirds. here in Albuquerque we dont have or we cantbfind any refuge that raises n takes injured hummingbirds. yes, we know its illehal but are we to let them die... I cannot!!!! and the lil beauty is doing great. although she/he is still lacking feathers on her/his belly, but doing great . also the wing looked injured, but now shes/hes moving it. very active hope*full she can be released soon.
Did your hummingbird you took care of survive? Were you able to release it?
This is so cute😍😍😍😍!
Love the ending that dude just takes off
dont humming birds have to eat about every 5 to 10 minutes so because there in a cage and can't get food themselves is this your life you have too feed them every 5 minutes. I'm just wondering because I heard that humming birds need to eat about every 5 to 10 minutes.
In the wild the mother will feed the baby every 20-30 minutes.
Artist paint brush migh be safer...I used
Parents beak is just as pointy lol

Hi I would like to get my hands on some of those birds? Where would you recommend?
Hummingbirds dont make great pets. They cant be handled so they are more of a look-dont-touch pet. This girl is rehibilitating the cuties, not keeping them. I would reccomend some budgies or some zebra finches to start with and moving on to more exotic breeds over time
O.... itu madu 🍯 ya
Thank you so much this video
I wonder if I put honey on a spoon on counter if bugs will get stuck on there so I can feed her them. So it's safe for the humming birds to eat the honey then too?
What is the name of the insect..??
Umm Keeping hummingbirds as pets is illegal in america....
Idiot she is rehabilitating them.
How many times you feed
Just put bugs EVERYWHERE
I mean Indian purple sunbird
theyre so cute omg
Thank you I was looking for a video like this yesterday I was outside smoking and one landed on me mom was trying to teach it to fly she fed him and just left him there 😢 it got super dark and there’s cats around I took the baby bird inside
Watching your video I became quite emotional, because hummingbirds is something special and until now I could not imagine to save a baby hummingbird, just like "that" 👍👍👍
Half of the people are acting as if they are animal vet or from a bird sanctuary.. Why she is just that little bird.. Try to just praise someone for their good act, u will feel good
Does ant works?
I just found a baby hummingbird and we’re doing sugar water and he’s loving it but I’m trying to figure out how much food to feed it so how many fruit flies we found a baby earthworm to feed it how much do I feed it?
Praise our Creator for creating hummingbirds. GOD alone is GOOD.
I truly believe He created them to especially bring us cheer, hummingbirds brought me out of a deep depression last summer by seeking me out and befriending me of their own accord when I didn't even have a feeder for them reliably. This year I was sad because I hadn't seen any by late June despite providing many feeders...then one night as I was putting my dog out I walked beneath a branch and heard the buzzing away of a humby...I looked up and right above me was a precious nest! That was how God reunited me with my sweet hummingbirds this summer. After that suddenly I saw them all over my yard. That nest was in a dangerously low exposed spot and she abandoned it and built another nearby. I discovered multiple old nests in those oak trees and realize now my front yard is a veritable hummingbird nursery. Once you spot a nest once it becomes way easier to see them. God always does special things for us via these tiny, angelic birds.
Please answer me mam
THIS IS SO GROSS!!! YOU HAVE FLIES ALL OVER YOUR TABLE
Matthieu Vonlanthen
You’re spoiled
I was thought it was impossible to raise that small bird and sparrow is basically the record :\
seriously, hummingbird eats flys? I thought they only eat flowers
did you say fruitless fruitflies? you mean wingless fruitflies!
Wonderful
You can't have humming birds as pets they will die
Wonderful they are and precious, cute, lovely. Without mother not make a cry.
Poor ants
Phyllis?
lol im 1 handed too and I love birds! is it a side effect?lol
Kimjo Lo wait what do you mean
H Wollberg she said she was one handed and I qm as well and feed the birds so I was joking about it!♥
So cute
I found a chick about as old and big as the strong flyer in this video. I have no clue how to care for it and before I even thought of doing some research I had given it away to someone who was talking like they knew how to care for it. Greta video!
Nice job..
How did you collect those flies. Any tips?
I was actually wondering how to show the babys to eat from flowers so they can go out on their own.
❤️❤️❤️
Sos un genio master, que buenisima onda, que grande.
Owww very beautiful 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
This was cute, but the problem is that whenever a person feeds a baby bird they become the "momma" bird, which makes it difficult for them to want to leave.
fairday2 well if they don't want to leave, they will have a good life around the momma human, cause the lady will provide food and nectar for the hummingbirds.
💓
feed with eggs and honey it work that way too
Man. I hope someone can help me. I'm watching your videos because one of my hummingbirds that visits the feeders broke her wing. I think. I got some flies yesterday and I have honey but I'm scared for her to panic and get stuck on the toothpick or something. I tried calling around, I dont want to sign her over to a vet but I may have to if it means she will recover. She is the only female I know of around here and I want her to get better to have babies. I already saw a male doing the mating ritual dance thingy in front of her once recently. I'm just at a loss and I dont know where to begin. I have her in a box in my home with blankets covering half the box and inside. Also have a feeder inside too.
hahahhh fruitless fruit-flies hahaha
