Eddie had many creative peaks. There's something Innovative and groundbreaking about each and every album. Eddie's Peak as a guitar player was probably 1984 where you can really hear the Allan Holdsworth influence.
His peak for songwriting was the sophisticated tracks on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge that still had his unparalleled groove.
Agree. Eddie said he was most pleased with the song writing on Fair Warning. This translated into some mean multi-track guitar. Mean Street is one of my all time favs. The guitar tracks in in Dirty Movies were intertwined in an incredible synchrony as well. Miss King Edward.

I think Eddie's innovation on guitar peaked around 1984 but as a player I'm not sure he ever peaked. He called himself a "tone chaser" and after 1984 his tone didn't change much but start seeing him playing different guitars and experimenting with different techniques and incorporating more keyboard but his playing got cleaner. Listen to or watch his Smithsonian interview when his playing is top notch and he's just jamming and improving. He talks about the fact that early in his career he couldn't afford the tools to achieve the sound he wanted and that's why he innovated but later he got the tools/toys and could focus on playing and writing. In my opinion, just like most artists, early on he fulfilled his desire to do what never had been done and then he wanted to grow artistically but most fans wanted more Eruption and more Mean Street. How many bands fail on their 2nd or 3rd album because the fans want more of the same? Eddie and Van Halen made a big enough splash and had a diverse enough audience that they were afforded the freedom to grow and change without falling into the trap of always trying to repeat themselves. No one peaks in the beginning but people like you are so hungry for a 2nd lightning strike that you lose sight of the creativity and the artist's drive to move on. Eddie changed guitar forever in 1978 and 45 years later, 3 years after his death he is still revered as one of if not the best ever. He wasn't the fastest, or the cleanest, he didn't have the best technique or the best gear but he had his style and the drive to share it. He wasn't successful because he could play. There are millions of people who can play faster and cleaner and have better technique. He was successful because of his style and creativity, so who the hell are you to say he ever peaked? You peaked in 1981 or '84 because you stopped evolving with the music and wanted the same thing he had already done. They released a new album every year for 4 years because they had all that material already. Then 3 albums every 2 years then 3 long years before F.U.C.K. which I think is their best work then 4 years for Balance, which to me feels like they couldn't decide on a direction and put it out because of studio pressure. I didn't hate III and I know I'm in the minority but again I think that was put out because of pressure and it was the same pressure that got Gary kicked out and brought Dave back again in 2012. It's been said a lot of the music for ADKOT was written in the 70s and 80s and just never finished and used but listen to Eddie on that tour, he hadn't peaked.
Debut featured his superior rhythmic approach. Totally fresh in 1978. Tone never better.

Great question, but I think the definition "peak" needs to be defined more. I'd say his playing/songwriting (though older songs) was at it's peak with ADKOT. That album rips and it's 2012! But if you're just looking at guitar playing, I'd vote for 5150. IMHO.
ADKOT is a super underrated album and just about as good as anyone that they made with Roth in my opinion.

He peaked when VH were gazzari's house band. Most guitar players are at their peak before they become famous and then fame, touring, addictions and other responsibilities begin to crowd guitar out

I'm going to get hammered for this, but I think he peaked around the time they made the Zero demo. That's far from a slight. We're talking about a 21-year-old who figured out House of Pain. That's genus level talent. Of course, he did refine his songs but that's not creative. That's editing. Remember he walked into a studio and played Eruption in one take. The second album was played live in the studio. You don't do that without peaking first.

Fair Warning
I like pretty much everything off the first 2 albums and many tracks off of everything between their 3rd album and 1984. Was never a fan of the Hagar years. Love Sammy. Just didn't love Van Halen's songs with Sammy.
Why do peoplle always act like eddie ONLY played keyboard during the sammy era!? There were only like 2/9 songs off of every record that had any keyboard playing.

Fair Warning....
Me too, I agree - and My fave era was Fair Warning too. But I agree - I think he was consistently awesome from '78 all the way to '84. He had spontaneous pyrotechnics but was always in service of the song. Of course, the band was the sum of all it's parts & I personally think this all became pointless once DLR left the band because they became something that was totally different with Hagar and was frankly kind of lame and boring to my ears.
