Purposely over and under-bending notes on your guitar!
By the 1980s the finance departments and CEOs of record companies were well aware of increasing a products life cycle using various tactics. Wether the band was made aware or not, there is a good chance that the management and AnR department influenced the departure of DLR with this in mind. I imagine influential company people were always wispering in the ear of the different band members and appealing to their ego's. 1984 was the peak of Van Halen's wave. It would have been easy for them to "wipe out" after such success but with Sammy and the musical change of direction, it was enough to keep their initial momentum going for another 10 years. Even Dave initially was hugely successful as a solo artist until the 90s rolled around. I think that there is a good chance that if the original band had finished another album together after 1984, their star would have faded faster. I think it was the same for The Police after their stratospheric success with Synchronicity. Unfortunately for them, the change that happened was that Sting went solo, and the band folded. Sting prolonged his career up until this present day. U2, basically reinvented their sound at the turn of the 90s with Achtung Baby. I personally couldn't stand their change of direction , but to them it didn't matter because they created a whole new fan base that stuck with them for another ten years plus. Even though Bono has become the guy eveybody loves to hate, they are still hugely popular. The same with Queen. They spent the 80s reinventing their sound and being massively successful.
'Not in the same class as Beck and Clapton.' Let me see, they were all in the same band at different points, they were colleagues who played the same type of blues based rock, same lengthy, multi-note solos, same influences except Page was the one who was a paid session professional before the other two were making a living at it. And Beck and Page were best mates who had a lot of personal and professional admiration for each other.
Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed all the info you shared and loved being able to hear the echo plex on a modern recording. Tones sound very nice!
I love my Yamaha mt120 and mt8x

Very clever video. Thanks!
I would probably say W.A.S.P. 🤭 they had a better stage presence with the raw meat, blood, and the rack girl. Blackie can sing better than Vince Neil, in my opinion. I know they never had the fame the Crüe had, but that makes them better, in my opinion. 😻 (edit: i don’t really think they’re glam metal though they are a heavier/darker version of glam metal in my opinion)
The amount of views this has is a cruel and unjust joke. What an amazing video and a great piece of content. Thanks for the upload.
Much appreciated!
Page does this same D major arpeggio riffing at the very end of "Dazed & Confused" live from The Song Remains the Same movie. Spotted that righta way.
Yup .. it’s in there a few times :)
Is there a tab for this lick
Good stuff
Glad you enjoyed it !
A fine selection of riffs, and nicely played 👍
Thanks 🙏
Seems like a slight warple. Like a vibe going on tremolo speed all the way down and the depth up a little. Very noticeable on the clean side. What is it?
I noticed this with a couple of our videos when they were uploaded to RUclips. Not sure why it happened . But it’s not the pickups :)
Just an opinion, but DOA is a weak pick.
What would you replace it with ?
Terry and Ed were childhood friends.
Echolpex? 😂
Copyright issues 😂
You suck.
Great short review! I am 67 years old now and do want to use a small rig. Every pound extra is not fine :-) For me it seems that the Fly Rig is a good solution, so I will give it a try. Thank you!
Thanks .. check out the Kotzen one as well !
People should cherish! Page he was one of the founding fathers of rock! And he is still alive! Dont wait for him to die to appreciate all he did for rock!!
Jimmy page is the king.. great producer arranger.. and the king! In riffs!! He played emotional.. and just did things nobody did.. he pushed himself to the limit. He was genius! And even eddy van halen said it.. his tapping technique and his guitar heroe was page he got that style from the heartbraker solo!. He said himself change his whole life playing.. yes eddy is better technical player.. but he is not jimmy page! The king of solos and riffs.
Thanks for this comparison video 👍🏻
Glad you liked it!
1:40 Echoplex doesn't change tape speed, the lever adjusts the distance between record head (mobile) and pickup head.
There's not enough Lydian and Phrygian content on RUclips that isn't just about the pure scales. I appreciate you being one of the few videos that actually showed me how to use these awesome tones in a way that doesn't sound gimmick or bogged down in genre meta's.
Thank You 🙏
These pickups sound fantastic!
Never trust a mic’s up Amp that probably gets some modification on the other end to make it sound like this.
Uh .. you could say that about anything: Amp, wood , strings on and on ..
God I wish you didn’t talk through the entire video
Next time I’ll sign 🤟
AC/DC would have been the same no matter who sang for them up until Malcom past away he was AC/DC
Bought my 44 in 1999. It was my first Boogie and was the perfect entry level Mesa for me at the time. It really taught me how to dial in a Mesa as I have acquired 4 other Boogies since. It was $699 new in a box for the 1X12 combo and described in the manual as a single channel, tri-modal amp. Having shared EQ controls over all 3 modes did take some dialing in. The manual really helped unlocking the classic tones that are associated with Boogie. I called them up and found I could order a head cabinet which opened up more options for various speaker cabs but this wasn't really sold as a head. They did make a 20 watt 1X10 called the Subway Rocket, and a Subway Blues in this lineup. I still have it and will never sell it.
Here's the sterile answer. There is zero benefit for a mass manufacturer to add it. They've done the math and not enough people pay for it. The 2nd part is there is a psychological aspect where a person will attribute more value to it by having it added after the fact. Then, finally, those who do their own work have been fabricating their own compensated nuts. To go along with your point though, every custom guitar should come with a compensated nut as standard if the buyer knows exactly what strings they'll use. Most importantly if they're using a plain or wound 3rd string.
The tricks of a magician should never be givin away. 🧙♂🪄
I have a 1980 greco egf 1200 with the dry z pafs and it sounds just as good as any 59 sunburst, arguably better. Reissues don't even come close.
Thought you just cranked out a big Beer Burp there!!🤣
Excellent video man, and of an awesome lick! Cheers! This whole Jimmy Page playlist is fantastic.
Thank You 🙏
I have the combo version and it does sound like a Marshall, but it doesn't really sound like my DSL 40, more like a JCM 800 or a Silver Jubilee. (El 84 tube amps such as this Mesa never really have any low end and usually don't cut through in a band situation), so I blend it with a Carvin 100-watt tube combo that has a EV12lm speaker in it and it REALLY has low end punch, when I play them blended together (Carvin for low end punch, Mesa for top end distortion) it is one of the best amplified guitar sound I have ever heard, Not as loud as a full Plexi stack possibly but really loud enough to play anywhere.
I’ve got a 1977 Greco Eg-600 Frehley model as well and man. The Vibes and the tone that comes out of this rival some of my more expensive gibson’s! LOVE Japanese’s 70s lps
💯
1977 construction dont have same construction and specs as the 80s ones... EG-600: 2 piece top, multipiece back, U-1000 pickups
Hey buddy it says Echolplex in the title you done made a little boo boo
Nice catch :)
“Hey buddy” will always be that go to passive aggressive phrase ever to man kind.
@@Ls_corvette allright champ
Nice preamp! Can stompbox echoplex preamp pedal do the same thing?
Catalinbread Belle Epoch can do a similar thing .. and the Chase Preamp Is nice also !
@@genxguitar3599 you mean "Chase tone Secret preamp"??
sounds fantastic! 🤙
🙌
Eddie was also pretty well known for using an EP3 Echoplex. Which would make sense Page was an influence on him
Puta vtwin foot switch threw it adds contour fatten up the amp
This came standard on my Washburn Parallaxe guitars and I love it.
How could you leave “Black Diamond” out?! Especially the 2nd lead when Ace would play it on his knees live while Gene and Paul rocked in unison over top of him! it is so well choreographed and he nailed it just about every time! Check out when they played it on the Midnight Special!
It’s in part two !
Enjoyed the video very much... and so pleased you gave Tommy Bolin a mention. He deserves to be remembered as one of the all time greats💜❤🎸🎶🎶🎶
Thanks .. I’m a huge Tommy fan and covered a bunch of his tunes on my other channel.
It would be a crime to talk about the EP-3 without mentioning Tommy Bolin
I saw Tommy Bolan with Deep Purple at Lakeland Civic Center in the early 70s using an echoplex and was blown away. I finally bought one on eBay, can't wait to try it out.
Yup! Miss 80's Eddie!!
A mate had a 2 pickup black Custom (70s)... It was definitely better than another blokes 68(?) Standard... clean or dirty. I had a Jr Copy, one piece of mahogany body...it was a bit heavy, but it had that sound!!!
Great breakdown!
The fact he is calling the sound horrible is alarming to me.
One man’s treasure .. one man’s trash . Or something like that :)
This video seems to be misunderstood by Allan fans. It's clear that Ed was influenced by Holdsworth and has admitted this to be the case. This video shows five examples of it. That's it! I KNOW that Ed was a "blues/rock" player and didn't have the harmonic sophistication of Holdsworth..but that isn't the point here.
