  • 20 Year Old Iron vs Modern Day Game Improvement Iron, Part 2 where I take on the common feedback from the first video of not comparing the 20 year old iron to a like for like iron of modern day times. So its time to put it up against a comparative iron in the JPX921 Forged. Lets see how the Cobra does now!

    I don’t know. I’m thinking about buying a 20 year old set of Callaway irons. The cost of new clubs is crazy to me.

      In that respect you are 100% correct. They are definitely a large outlay especially at these strange financial times. However you do have the opportunity to be correctly custom fitted for them also the new heads perform better etc etc. However that said, cost is a huge factor within the buying decision so only thing I would say to that is to make sure you buy sensibly and purchase something that works and fits better than what you use currently 👍

      I’m one of the few golfers that don’t believe in the stuff they say to sell new clubs. I bought a set of 2004 Big Bertha Irons 5-10 iron plus PW for less than 50$ and I love them. If I hit them ok I don’t get feedback but they are easy to hit and go where I want them to go.

    Great video, just what I needed to see as well. I have just come back to golf and have an old set of Cobra 3100 irons and having been thinking of getting new ones, this has made up my mind. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.

    Ive hit blade irons and cavity back irons, and honestly, I much prefer the oversized cavity back like Cobra and Callaway. Blade irons require center strikes to be accurate. Yes, you can feel miss hits with blades, but you also notice the loss in distance. I much prefer a more forgiving iron. People today seem to be all about distance, but accuracy to me is more important along with forgiveness. Older technology IMO is good enough for your weekend mid-high hanicapper golfer. You don't need the newset stuff out there to play golf, IMO it comes down to how deep ones pockets are. Worse comes to worse, I will just club up.

    I'd used a set of Mizuno T-Zoid True iron for almost 20 years before changing to new T200. New T200 is good and hits further, but I still miss the butter soft feel from my old Mizuno.

      921 Forged, ZX5 or i230 are as forgiving or more forgiving than T200 and could feel much better. Life is too short and there are too many good irons today to settle.

    Great video once again, I had the old mizuno Mx 100 which is approx 15 years old? And I've just upgraded to ping i230 and the difference between feel is very noticeable, I can feel where on the face and if the face twists etc with the i230's, with the mx100 every shot be it fat or flushed, slight toe or heel they all feel the same, you can't tell the difference at all, but they are big chunks of metal, game improvement irons designed to just get the ball in the air. I thought it was all in my head but this video confirms what I thought!

      All manufacturers have made huge strides in many areas over the years. Individual releases see relatively small improvements but taken over a longer time frame, the gains in performance, forgiveness and feel have been quite profound 👍

    Happy NY Jay. Hope your ears weren't burning last night. I was chatting to a neighbour at a get-together and mentioned you and your channel. The neighbour commented that 'I'm not a golfer', but I responded by saying that I enjoy the honesty and passion that you demonstrate in your videos. I gave an example of you reviewing older clubs to new etc etc... and here's the proof! Keep up the excellent work.

    Very cool comparison…I’m tempted to buy a set of Ping Eye2 that I used to pay eons ago and do a similar comparison….once I get my JPX 923 forged/pro combo set.

    The grip (the handle itself) as well as the shaft affects this as well as the head. If you replace the shaft and grip to exactly the same as the new club and use the old head, THEN you will be comparing apples to apples (well closer).

    I still use tommy armour 845s and sometimes ping eye 2 plus and hit them very good. I play with guys that have newer clubs and still keep up with them, oh sure they're using a 8 iron when I use a 6 iron but they are the same loft.

    Great video. So, modern thinner face with slot behind is worth about 3-5 yards depending on swing speed, out of center & likely double that out of heel & toe - that's worth it for sure for handicap golfers. Interesting when you look back at older clubs how much offset you see - and thus toe-up to toe-up (which is open) delivery vs now modern toe-at-spine-angle. That 221 Forged is honestly a club that every golfer in the world could play - just bend it weaker to 33 if you desire.

    BUT my guess is if you keep them mizunos and try them against an iron 15-20 years from now they will probably land on the same dime (unless they change the rules regarding how clubs are constructed)

  • @dagdagranger

    considering you are comparing VW vs early Porsche no wonder they feel better. forged vs steel forged clubs always feel better and are made for better golfers
    not for mid to high handicappers. this tea just confirms that the older designs are great if you had bent the lofts to be comparable you would make up the difference..iropns for me are for certain distances not to see how far they go club up or down..thank for proving that new clubs are not worth the trade up for mid handicappers..

      225 definitely holds that sector for Mizuno, this one is more of the better feeling game improvement of the JPX921 range, not full on Forgiveness of the Hot Metals so wouldn't be a fair contest against that. Trying to be as fair as I can 👍

    • @AskGolfNut

      A broken clock is correct twice a day. When it comes to dispersion then you need to look at a larger data set or at least mix in within the dataset, the use of gaming shots. On a set of a few shots each on camera I wouldn't pay too much attention to the consistency of results, that's why I do the fuller shot batches later on to fully understand what tendencies and habits one has over another 👍

    Does your higher swing speed affect these numbers, basically making the miss hits less dramatic? These kinds of tests would be interesting with slower swing speed.

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Год назад +2

      You'd effectively get the same percentage drop off. So technically if you look at it from a percentage drop off it'd be the same, however due to the slower swing speed let's say a 10% drop in ball speed is actually greater the faster you swing in relative distance than slower, so in effect it would actually be less of a difference the slower the swing 👍

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Год назад

      My eyes don't capture at the same frame rate as quad 😁
      If it's wet some days you can see a ball print, especially at the driving range where soil isn't wiping off strike marks. Spray powder on the face is a good way also, but I've never been the best at using my eyes to see impact point 👍

    shaft tyoe and length the same?

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Год назад +1

      Length the same, shaft in the Cobra is a DG, the other is a KBS Tour. I'm not shaft sensitive so I don't see any change in ball dynamics from changing shafts so no difference whatsoever from the small shaft change 👍
