    I'll never understand why people think its better to hit a 9 iron 175. The majority of rec golfers' approach shots are from 175 and under. Wouldn't it make sense to have more clubs in that range? The old lofts just make more sense to me! And, new clubs attempt to do this with the added u-wedges, sand wedges, lob wedges, etc.

    Great review. I am impressed just how competitive the revolutionary Ping Eye 2 remains. I have a set in my garage 2-SW, but the shafts have rusted so I don't play them now. It took about 25 years before I felt that a better iron was available, but only marginally. Now I have the original 2015 year Callaway Epic 3-AW.

      @@garlichoto4669 I think so, but :. Check to see if the grips are in good shape or it will cost about $9 a club to replace. Give the grips a wipe down with a little soap and water which will make them less slippery if they are worn and see what you think. Also make sure the groves are not worn. If they are forget it. They will not be as forgiving as modern cavity backs, but still quite good. The lofts are "traditional" - 7 iron is 36*, so they will play about a club shorter, but that really does not matter much.

    Super happy to see this test! I am a 16 handicap. I used ping eye 2 from 1986 for about 20 years. I went from there to ping i10 and then to Ping g10 (both used). Not sure I could tell a difference. I then got fitted for ping g420. The feel was terrible and I’m not sure anything changed. Still carry my g10 3 iron. In the end you sort of proved a point. The irons from today, especially The Ping Eye 2, hasn’t come very far in 35 years. 6 yards farther in 35 years???? That’s likely on the green bud or I club up. 3-5 yards more forgiving is a tough call with the 10k dollars easy spent by people upgrading there gear In a 35 year span. The 420 feel is trash compared to the eye 2....

      I think you are right. My understanding is the face of the G425 is forged stainless steel. That's different than the cast G10's construction. Its a far different feel. I didn't like them either I play with G2's. Remember the new irons are 3 or 4 degrees stronger - so ya, they go farther. What a surprise. Buy a uses set of G10's, tweak the loft to match todays loft and watch what happens.

The companies already have the 2023 stuff ready to go and are working on 2025. “Product development”. What we don’t know is the the best driver ever created may have been a 2007 model. When the computer has nothing left to offer they still have to change it even if it’s worse. All in the realm of product development. Gotta sell the new stuff. @@kaden1499 Go back to the original question, which was "Who cares if it is a 7 iron or a 5 iron?"
      The answer of why it matters is because a 5 iron is physically longer than a 7 iron, which makes it more difficult for a center contact.
      That's why length matters, not just in driving, but in hitting irons. It's always going to be more beneficial to hit an 8 iron from 160 than someone who needs to hit a 5 iron from 160, one because of the length of the club, and two because of the loft.

We should keep in mind though that testing a club from the 'i' eye range will give lower trajectory and less forgiveness than a 'g' range of iron as it was essentially a player's iron. Most today associate “forgiveness” in irons with a resistance to face deflection with off-center hits but the factor which motivated Solheim to create high-MOI putters and the PING was automatically keeping the face square to the swing arc in the takeaway and impact. This is evidenced in the “face balance” of the old Bulleye putters which hang vertically when suspended on a finger causing the toe bias to twist the club in the hands, open in the backswing and closed during downswing. By comparison a PING Anser style putter will hang at a 40°-45° angle causing it to stay automatically square to the type of inside-square putting stoke used back in the 1960s.
    Because everyone very quickly adopted the high MOI methodology for the “game improvement” category of irons is difficult to appreciate how different the PING EYE and EYE2 are unless comparing them to the blade irons from the 1960s and 1970s which I did for grins and giggles after finding both at thrift stores and re-gripping them identically before even swinging them for a similar “feel in hands” comparison. The difference in toe bias can be felt at the point in the backswing the force rotates the lead arm and cocks the wrists to guide the club up to the top of the backswing and when adjusting toe/face angle from square to hit fades and draws.
    The difference between the EYE2 and later similar high MOI designs just isn’t felt as much. In my experience the Maltby Playability Index which assigns a numerical score for “foregiveness” based on objective technical measurements tracks with how the the clubs feel. Those with a lower MPF having lower MOIs and more of a tendency to try to twist off square from the swing line making it more difficult to swing consistently.

      True, since we don't have the carry info per hit, I would estimate that the avarege carry based on the dots on the screen, excluding the miss fire, is about 166-167. Then you add about 10 yards for the loft difference and you get 177 carry. Also look at the dispersion without the mishit! I have i3 Os as well and looked into the G425. They didn't look good in person and for now I am not embarrassed to play the i3s anymore 😂 Just forget the number on the club and focus on the loft. As a high handicapper, my biggest upgrade needs to be my club speed, not the hardware. Usually the misfits are taken out in these tests but in this case it would make it harder to sell these new clubs, no? 😂

    interesting, i upgraded to G20's back when they came out and felt my game inproved albeit i consider myself a hacker. I also bought my Father in law some Ping eye 2's for his first set, but when he past i was given them back, so recently looked into getting them lengthened to suit my game as i want to have a go. My only question is how hard to get the lie changed as my G20's are white when the the Eye2's are Red's.

    people talk about the lofts getting stronger. In reality what has happened is that the gap wedge was added which replaced the pitching wedge and the rest of the clubs where given stronger lofts The seven iron has become the six iron of old. If you will look the shaft of the older six is the same length as the shaft of the newer seven irons. In reality the irons have not changed that much they have just been given a new number where the six of old is now the seven with the newer clubs. A fair comparison would be to hit the irons with the same loft.

    • @mousepotatop9767
      @mousepotatop9767 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I don't know why people get so excited? For any given distance, just grab your club that hits that distance, be it a 7 or 5 iron. We don't all play the same distances, so why would we all play the same iron number? I don't get it. About the Gap wedge: why do we need it? Just move the ball 1/2 ball back.

      AFAIK in researching replacing my Eye 2’s , and buying G430s the old club heads are 1 type of metal so they were limited in where they could place the centre of gravity. New clubs use multiple alloys strategically placed to lower the CG lower than the old clubs making it easier to get the ball in the air, so they had to de-loft the face to compensate. I’m talking mainly game improvement clubs here. Ps I really struggled with the Eye 2’s but love the G430s, straight, way more distance and way more forgiving.

    Thomas, one question for you: You mentioned feeling like you could swing the G425 4 iron faster than the Eye 2 3 iron. Why is that? Is it related to the head weight, the swingweight, the shafts? Just curious what gave you that feeling.
    The standout to me in this test was the G5. Doesn’t have all the modern tech, but you still get a super forgiving shape and sole, with spin rates that are sort of on par with modern players’ irons and could work just fine on fast greens.

One of the underrated parts of newer irons is how they help you up your club head speed which helps with distance and other things as well. I know you’re trying for consistency but we need to know the difference between them in as many areas as you can. Just an opinion

    • @lifesaver3499
      @lifesaver3499 10 месяцев назад

      to me the only ways newer clubs would help you swing faster is if the shaft was longer and lighter and if the head was smaller or made out of a lighter material..i think you are fooled by how a modern longer shafted 5 iron is really just a traditional 3 iron...sure your modern 5 iron is as long as a trad 3i but thats because it is really a 3i

    Feedback purely from a statistical point of view:
    1. You need 10 hits per iron to have even a basic level of statistical confidence.
    2. You should throw out the two furthest outliers per club, so shoot two extra and discard two.
    3. You should alternate clubs on every hit, to correct fatigue/warmup factor.
    Amazing shooting though, extremely consistent.

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 года назад

      Thanks for the feedback. I like the idea of more data for sure. However fatigue and time can be an issue depending on the golfer. In a fitting we notice fatigue 40-50 shots in. When comparing heads 3-4 heads and 2-3 shafts that shot count adds up pretty fast. I'm a proponent for more data but after 5-6 shots you can begin to draw conclusions - Thomas
