In this video, 2nd Swing master fitters Thomas Campbell and Danny Ferrell discuss their favorite golf irons over the last five years in the players iron, players-distance iron, and game-improvement iron categories. Then, Thomas and Danny do some light testing to showcase the differences in performances.

I play Wilson Staff D7 Forged R steel and Ping G400 R Graphite. Very different clubs but I like them both equally for different reasons. I play the Wilsons in wind for lower trajectory and roll out on certain courses and pings for the height and spin on nice days. This is what works best for me - I am 9.5 handicap. Great video thank you.
Thank you for watching! Interesting options but that is the general trend I would expect to happen - Thomas
I also play Wilson D7 and they are fabulous! Still love Big Berthas and my Mizunos JP 64 but D7 are more balanced and maneuverable
As a high handicapper I love my Ping G425s! Easy to launch and not super jacked lofts like they said. I knew it was going to perform well with Thomas hitting them :)
Thank you for watching! - Thomas
I’m just starting out , watching so many videos, would you recommend them for a starting out golfer
@@wbev_thai1666
Personally, I would recommend a good cheap used set of cavity back irons for just starting out.
These are easy to hit though and if you want a better beginner set this would be great!
Im considering these this week. They are on sale from $1300 for $1000CAD.
I play t100 and I love them, the more used they get the better they are, I have tweaked them with lead tape but not much
Callaway Apex 21s! Amazing feeling iron and looks super clean in the bag!
Tour Edge 722s are incredible in quality and value. I’ve been amazed at all they deliver
Thank you for watching! They also are delivered very quickly - Thomas
I recently ordered Sub 70 699 Pro 5-PW. I hit some TM P790 against 699 demo clubs and they were pretty much identical in feel and performance. I went with Sub 70 because I was able to upgrade the shaft ($ Taper 100) and the grips and still be half the price ($654 delivered) of the Taylor Made. If you know your numbers, DTC clubs can be a great deal.
Thanks for this! I have been looking at the 699s as well. Are they similar in look to the P790s?
@@robertvandenheuvel9695 By look I assume you mean at address. Yes they are similar to my eye. Pretty minimal offset and the top line has some thickness to it but it's not screaming game improvement. (5i offset is about the same as my old game improvement 8i. Top line is MUCH thinner.) I ran into a buddy at the range a couple months ago. It was his first time seeing my new clubs. He thought they were blades. About 10 rounds with them and I don't regret my purchase.
@@1averageamerican Awesome, thanks!
Man I wish there was a location closer to me. I would spend all my free time in store!
After being away for 20 years I picked up g425 at mtka store. (New ). 2 pars on a round of 9 holes. Not bad first time out. Both par 3s by they way.
One thing to remember, however, is that if you add or remove loft you also are adding and removing bounce at the bottom of the club. It may not matter a lot depending on your swing but on the other hand it may. More bounce typically means more forgiveness.
Thomas,
I would love to see you do a comparison of Mizuno 225 vs 790 in terms of distance, ball speed, distance consistency, spin, height, decent angle and forgiveness.
Also, do you think the Mizuno 225 compares more with the P790 or P770 ?
Thanks,
Joe
P.S. add Ping i525 to this test too please!! 225 vs 790 vs i525
My previous irons were the Ping G25. I loved these clubs but decided to get fitted for Ping G425s. After three rounds I sold the G425’s and went back to my G25’s. The reason, believe it or not, was because the sharp sound hurt my ears on off center hits. I’m sure this was due to the settings on my hearing aids but not something I could live with. Next I tried Titleist T300 and love them. Forgiving, long and easy to hit. They are approximately 2* stronger than my Ping G25 but easy to adjust to.
Edited: I played the Titleist awhile but went back to my G25s. You can’t beat the feel.
Thank you for your feedback! - Thomas
Same reason I got rid of my G425. The sound is atrocious!
I have to wear ear plugs when using my driver because it sets my tinnitus off. Annoying! It would be nice if the manufacturers thought of these things
Played Eye2's for years. Went with 425's. Ditched them because of the sound. Also ditched SIM2's, same reason. Mizuno JPX Hot Metal Pro, a little better, not that much different. So hard and loud. Want to hear "whoomp," not "snap". Need to go hit forged somewhere.
criminal to not have a mizuno iron set on this list
Thanks for the 770s guys. Mixed bag with 790 4-6
Sounds like a great set makeup. Do you weaken the P790's to help with gapping between your 6 and 7 irons? - Thomas
Shout out to the Mizuno 921 Tour. IMO more forgiving than the T100, cleaner look in the bag and feels amazing. T100 is smaller at address.
I did end up going with T100 but the 921 Tour was very very close. I would have been more than happy with either.
I just got the 921 tours and I’m very happy
Had the 921 tours with c taper 130s, they definitely have the looks, but I like the ZX7’s with px 7.0’s I have now much more
Most forgiving MP iron from 2016-17 didn't even make it to the American market. The MP-55. Talk about forgiveness, and fun to play.
Both very great options - Thomas
Played P790 and upgraded today to the T100S. It was an upgrade
Selling the P790s?
I think it would be cool to see you guys compare a heavily used driver and brand new driver of the same model to see if there is performance difference. The model that comes to mind is the 2017 M2 just because it’s still easy to get it new. Find a heavily used one. Hopefully by a stronger player. And see if the face degradation/etc has any noticeable difference. I haven’t seen anyone document this in a test. Supposedly drivers and presumably other woods or hybrids get hotter with use. Is it actually enough to actually affect performance?
Really cool idea I would watch in a heartbeat
Great suggestion. Noted and added to the list - Thomas
T100 is for higher spin but this man still can’t get enough of it
Thank you for watching! - Thomas
I have the p790s/DG x100, I really need the lower spin. They've been working out great on the course.
Great choice. Glad they are working out - Thomas
Thoughts on m1 irons vs p790?
I still can't find a better set of irons than my wilson staff FG51 tour blades.they are over 30ys old and nothing today compares to them in my opinion!
I feel like we as a golf community don’t understand fliers very well. It can’t be as simple as loft because Thomas would be hitting an extra club with the t100 to keep up and voila the loft is essentially the same. I’m certainly familiar with a low spin shot that goes 10 yards further but there seems to be some myths or uncertainty about how much the club design influences it.
I asked the PGA Pro I take lessons from, and he explained it to me like this. He said that it can be lie dependent, where sometime you’ll have contact where grass is in between your club and ball and it causes it to “jump.” When it comes to a flier lie out of the fairway he said it’s less to do with lofts and more to do with the quality of strike! He equated it to how far do you think a tour pro could hit your club! They’d hit it a lot further due to the quality of their strike, and they’re just better at compressing the ball and hitting the center of the face. It’s kind of dumb luck he said, and you get a shot where your swing and strike absolutely perfectly and goes farther than your normal! Hope that helps! I was worried about that too when I decided to get new clubs and he went through my fitting with me!
Agree with all that @Dmkfactor said. Quite simply a better ball striker should not use a game improvement iron. Also high speed golfers that need forgiveness present inconsistency challenges as when they hit it the ball will go crazy far but when they don't strike the middle it's going to be varying in distance more - Thomas
@@dmkfactor1721 your absolutely right I hit my tour edge bazooka 370 box set junk 7iron 130 on a thin/fat shot but when the stars align and o get sound and center face it goes 175 yards lofted at a pedestrian 34* lol it’s all how good you strike it
Great review 👏
Thanks for watching - Thomas
Thank you for another good video 👏🏼
Thank you for watching! - Thomas
Has anyone ever played the Wilson staff fg tour v6 irons? Any feedback is super helpful
What would be the perfect choice, if you wanted something in between the t100 and the p790?
p770 if your thinking TaylorMade. I would also throw in the Srixon ZX7's - Thomas
@@2ndswing where do you Think the Mizuno 921 forged would fit in?
I would love to see your reaction to the newer Tommy Armour 845's. I think they are the most underrated clubs around!!!
I had the previous model (TA-1 Irons) and sold them. Big mistake…
Those were great Irons.
Agree
We still run into the 845's all the time they are great clubs that stand the test of time - Thomas
love my PxG Gen 2 0311P irons! Got them new last year for $129/club.
Thanks for your feedback - Thomas
I would have picked a 4th category the "underrated iron" and chosen either Srixon or Wilson in that spot.
Great call. Srixon really needs a different category all together. The ZX7's are not exactly players distance or cavity backs while the ZX5's fall between game improvement and players distance irons. Possibly best combo potential? - Thomas
Mizuno Pro 225’s baby, and game improvement Mizuno JPX 921 HMP.
Would been cool to see you guys compare these clubs with the same loft
its not that simple.
Love the discussion about which type of player a club might apply to
Thank you for watching! - Thomas
What about the Srixon ZX5 irons?
If there was a best underrated category, absolutely - Thomas
The only no that matters is the loft but manufacturers only put that on wedges. Most 'modern game imorovement' irons go through a loft range 1 degree less than my 'traditional' Mizuno sets but do it with only 7 clubs to my 8, meaning bigger distance gaps, usually from 7-w. This makes 'blending' sets difficult as two clubs with similar lofts have different no. / same no, different loft. The objective in last 'fitting' was to change shafts and fitter wanted me to test new clubs and I did but compared the 6 iron with my 5 (same loft) and I stayed with my clubs with new shafts, swapped Project X 5.5 for Nippon Modus3 120 S. Cheaper and better, my handicap now coming back closer to where it was prior to injuries.
Thanks for your feedback. I agree there is a little bit of loft jacking but the COG (head design) does influence different launch profiles for certain golfers needing the help - Thomas
@@2ndswing Agree, that's why I refer to the Maltby Playability Factor. It measures clubs top to bottom, front to back and side to side, for a complete comparison.
The best Srixon ZX5. love mine man.
Thank you for watching. I agree that Srixon has knocked it out of the park with ZX5 & ZX7, definitely underrated - Thomas
Good combo, fitter and player 👍 for me
Thank you for watching! - Thomas
How would you compare T300 to G425 irons?
Very comparable. T300 may go a little further but G425 may fly a little higher - Thomas
hi, I'm interested in blending the new Mizuno Pro 225, 223 and 221 into one set. Maybe split 234/567/89P or 23/456/789P. Is that possible? How would you guys adjust the lofts to blend them so I can fill up the gap.
really intersting video
I carry a set of PXG 0211 dc2s and they feel pretty solid.
Based on Maltby’s MPF measurements G425 has a tone of MOI but very highly positioned center of gravity. So it would look you are wrong saying that these Pings launche higher because of low CoG… maybe it’s just higher lofts that give you light launch and not the cog here??!
I think it's a combo of the two. I do know that if I had a blade and G425 bent to the exact same loft the G425 will be higher - Thomas
Best combo? ZX7 & 5?
That's right up there for sure they are both really awesome. If we had a couple more categories to fit the ZX5's and ZX7's into which would be between game improvement and players distance (ZX5) & players distance and cavity back (ZX7) they would be at the top for sure! - Thomas
@@2ndswing playing 4-pw in the 7 series and 3i in the 5 one and am really impressed by performance and feel but not tried and would be curious to hit the t100 and t100s, they do look on the money
I like the G425 but want something less chunky for my next set. What category do you put the Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal in?
Yep found the same with G5s
Game improvement like the Ping G425. Pro version is slightly smaller.
Callaway Apex dcb, and the best part is they’re forged! It sits in between game improvement and player distance irons! A real treat to hit, and the sound is incredible!!
921 hot metal is still in the G425 category. You could look at the hot metal pro if you want a sleeker yet still forgiving option - Thomas
@@2ndswing Thank you very much Thomas.
Great review boys. I have been playing AP2 712 for a while and just love them. Recently I tried JPX 921 forged and all my shots started to fade, whereas I am used to getting a nice draw with my AP2s with exactly the same swing. I am back to my AP2s now. Do you think T100 may be worth a try???
Mizuno are a degree or two flatter… That would explain your fade.
Love how in the photo my AP2s 716 look like game improvement clubs compared to the T100s!
There has definitely been a trend to slim down that line - Thomas
I hit the Mizuno MP20 MMCs and I’ll put them up against any iron on the market.
Thank you for watching! - Thomas
Really there that good? I’m a high handicap player maybe 25 and was looking to get fitted for ping g425 next weekend
@@boxerboy860 you can’t go wrong with anything Ping
I like blades because they’re easier to clean
I know Thomas is gone, but is Danny still around? Haven't seen him in a while.
Where’d Thomas go…? Maybe up to Canada to work with Ian since ole Matty Boy left him??
ZX7 has to be in there.
Never thought I would buy a set of srixons, but they are absolute butter.
@@lysergicsalamander So good.
I agree ZX7 is top notch. We really need a 4th category for them. Right between players distance & cavity back/ blades. - Thomas
You have a good even swing
Please do a forged vs cast durability video.
Love the suggestion - Thomas
I tend to hit balls really high. I want to get a bit more distance out of my Irons and get them to go farther and be more forgiving. Any suggestions?
Nobody, the 2nd guy “yep, true, right, exactly”
wilson staff tour blades
Have not fit many golfers into those irons. Agree they look and feel great but they just haven't been a popular option for most golfers - Thomas
Titlest, mizuno always been the best
2 Peter Pettigrews reviewing golf clubs. What are they doing with their hands
Between Ping g425 vs Callaway Rouge Irons vs TM Stealth Irons. What would be best for a beginner golfer?
Really hard to beat the G425s. Best choice here IMO.
@@jstone4071 Or Haywood's.
@@jstone4071 or second hand
Ping all day any day for a beginner! Always the most forgiving! I’m pretty sure the majority of serious golfer have had a set of Pings somewhere early in their golfing lives! I have a smile right now thinking back to my Ping eye 2s that I learned to play with!
@@jstone4071 I’d go for a used set of Pings! Nothing beats a Ping for a beginner, just nothing else out there that matches the forgiveness which is crucial for beginners!
Titleist T100
Titleist T200
Titleist T350
They got videos on deck for months they shot this almost 6 months ago
We work hard on putting together a lot of videos of all types of content - Thomas
Once you hit callaway epic forged star all other irons just don't compare. I've hit them all..
Thanks for your feedback. Very forgiving and will provide you the distance upgrades - Thomas
Thomas must have serious FOGL on the course with that low spin. As a low spin player, I'm always in fear of nuking one over the green and the worst stuff is always over the green seems like.
I'm sure his spin is waaaay higher than that on grass mats take off so much spin I bet he's above 6000 RPM with 7 iron
Spin is definitely higher now mid 6000's. The mat does have something to do with it (attack angle) - Thomas
Taylor made CGB 2017
Thank you for watching! - Thomas
Mizuno Mizuno Mizuno
You guys need a coach to help you with your insecure hand movements - it's making me uncomfortable watching you guys squirm around like that.
Thanks for watching!
Ping i230 is all around better than the taylormade
5500 spin on a 7 iron with the T100 isn’t a lot of spin. My 30 year old Tommy Armour 845 7 iron spins more than that. I would hate to get less spin than that and need to hold a green.
845 for sure is going to spin more than that. There is 2* more loft on the 7iron. - Thomas
Zx7
Definitely underrated and a great club to reduce spin - Thomas
I cannot fathom how you can release a video talking for 20min without putting time stamps.
Based on sales...seriously guys ?
The irons must be performing well in the fitting bay if they are selling! - Thomas
No Callaway irons ? 🤣 Some of the most forgiving most playable irons in the last decade.Who are these clowns lol 😂
IM EARLY - miz 225s.
Great new option in the players distance iron category. Maybe we will be discussing that line in 5 years for our next video - Thomas
