- This log cabin quilt block tutorial makes creating a log cabin so simple using a jelly roll.
My first quilt was a log cabin, and cutting all the strips and pieces was way more complicated back then. With these simple steps you quickly use one jelly roll, a little more fabric for borders, and you'll have a nice sized lap quilt.

I participated in a sewing ministry at a church last year and I'm HOOKED on quilting! Now that we are traveling (RVers) My hubby just bought me a small machine and YAYYYYYY! I can quilt a I go!!!
When you went to your stash, i thought, "when I grow up, I want a jellyroll in my stash...."
Thank you for an understandable tutorial!
FUN!!! So glad you had the opportunity to get a taste of quilting and you're enjoying it. It's a live time hobby!
I have a quilting friend that goes up to an RV in the summer. She has things all cut up in advance and then sews in the RV or on the picnic table. Always thought that was sooo cool!!
Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching!
Wish I had done this Log Cabin method with my Christmas jelly roll plus scraps. I did the Jelly roll race method, and I ended up with areas of same fabric bunched up all in one area. Not sure how Thaaaat happened! I like my quilt tops to be more organized. So much for organizing the order of them. Oh well, i made somewhat of a stash dent, and we'll have a nice sized cuddle quilt for the daybed or couch.🤷♀️
Well dang, I'm with you on wanting my quilt tops more organized. That's why I don't do well with truly scrappy projects... I get a little anal.
Your quilt will still be loved and enjoyed!!! And now you have a plan for the next one. Thanks so much for watching 💜
Can’t wait to see what you do with the squares.
Me too!! 🤪🥳
First time watching and enjoying hope I can save the directions cause I want to make this one
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
My fave. The nine-pack quilts.
Very smart !!
I try! 😃
Great
Good instructions.
Yeah, glad you thought so. :-) Appreciate you watching and commenting. Happy quilting!!
Oooh. I do love that jelly roll. Probably can’t find it now. 😏
Glad u liked it. You never know what u can find online. Check Etsy

Hi Wendy, I was watching your video on the log cabin quilts. Do you ever do a video making one of these quilts from beginning to end? You make it look easy but its finishing a quilt I have complications with. Thankyou, Bobbie
I usually don't as I don't have the time to get the whole thing done in time for my video schedule. The quilt that I did for this video - STILL NOT PUT TOGETHER!! 😭😱
But.. maybe that's what I need to do, is get that baby out and get a video of putting it together and finishing it.
What part of finishing it do you struggle with? I do have other videos on binding.
@@WendyJHaney Thanks anyhow. I enjoyed listening to yo, very down to earth. Ill just wing it.
You've got it!! 💜
I have dozens of jelly rolls... now to pick the one to use first...
I hear you there! So many times I'm like... Oh, I love that one too much to use it for that. 😆
Hi Jenny. I love this pattern and have one question. The 2nd pile of dark strips you said cut 12” and 6 1/2”. The other 2 piles equal 19” and this one is 18 1/2”. Is this correct or should it be 12 1/2”? Please advise. Thanks. Ellen Barry
Thanks for letting me know you figured it out.
Loved watching this video…it is the first of your videos I have seen. I have searched about but haven’t been able to find this quilt completed. Can you help?
Well...that's because I haven't finished it yet. 🤪😞
@@WendyJHaney 😂
I know, right?!? 🤪😂 On the to do list
Question: When are cutting your strips, do you end up with 2 longer and 2 shorter strips out of each strip?
Not sure I fully understand the question, but hopefully this answers it... with the dark strips, I had you create 3 piles of 6 strips each. Each strip you cut into a long strip (14.5", 12.5" or 10.5") and a short strip (4.5", 6.5" or 8.5"). This uses up 19" of your 22" jelly roll strip. With the light strips you need lengths which are 12.5", 10.5", 8.5", 6.5", 4.5", and 2.5", so if you cut the 12.5" and 6.5" together and 10.5" and 8.5" strips out of the same jelly roll strip, once again that is 19" of your 22" jelly roll strip. you could easily add the 2.5" to a few of those strips depending on the salvage and be at about the max of 22". the 4.5" strips you'll have to cut out of other strips. You can get 4 of those out of one jelly roll strip (18"). Please don't hesitate to reach out if I've made it more confusing or I didn't answer your question.
Love the ruler, what make is it? xx
Not sure which one, but I was using the Omnigrid 6x24 (amzn.to/3PhBvv6) and 6x12 (amzn.to/3awAEbw). I love these rulers and use them a ton. If it was something else, let me know about the time in the video and I can check on it again. Thanks so much for watching!!
Beautiful quilt… can I ask you what camera you are using to film
Thank you! I use two cameras, a Sony A6000 and Sony A6400. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your quick response
I didn’t realize that you could video with this camera
Yep, they both work great.
Do you have the printable page?
Yes. Go over to my website and drop me a message (Contact me link).
Love your video and your canny style I love Robert Kaufman materials please tell me the name of the jelly roll so I can buy it as it’s beautiful Helen Aberdeen Scotland x
Thank you so much Helen!! I will work to see if I can figure out what jelly roll it was when I get home in a few days. I think I might have taken a photo of it for something else. 🤞
Thanks so much for watching and letting me know how much you enjoyed it. 😍
Well darn Helen, I never got back to you on this!! I'm thinking it might be one of these jelly rolls:
* Robert Kaufman Artisan Batiks: By the Brook roll-up
* Hoffman Bali Pops: Horizon
I'm not 100% sure, but both of those look pretty close.
I love that fabric, do you know the name of it?
I am not 100% sure. Next time I'll remember to make note of it when I do my video. I think it might be Hoffman Bali Pops Horizon - or at least pretty darn close to that. I have a feeling that might have been a variety of left over strips from another project also. Thanks for watching!!
or... it could be Robert Kaufman Artisan Batiks By the Brook roll-up. That one looks close too. 🙃
My blocks are more accurate if I precut like you do. Great tuitorial.
yeah!! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Happy to hear you're getting accurate blocks. 🙂
Jelly roll strips make me nervous because you can’t wash and prep them and if you sew them won’t your quilt get all warped after you wash the quilt?
I don't pre-wash any of my fabric, and have not had any issues. Have yet to see a 'warped' quilt due to using jelly rolls. Maybe give it a try on a small baby quilt and see what you think. Be sure all of the fabric used is NOT pre-washed. Consistency it that is key. Thanks for asking and watching!!
Wendy I watched another woman m as me a log cabin this morning and she just kept the 1st dark print facing up
Sure there are plenty of different ways to do things ☺️
You've made cutting strips the most complicated on YT ! First this way, then no, that way, and "I don't do it like this usually"? I've made 79 quilts in 2 years and not one is a log cabin, so thought I learn from this vid....... but no, I'll go climb Everest instead, it's easier !!!
Thanks for watching. You do what works for you.
What about the 2 1/2” light??
as the comments don't show in line of the video I can't tell what this was in reference too. Hopefully all came out OK and it made sense in the end.
If your light and dark are not very distinctive go by color! I would have gone dark:black, middle:brown and light: teal. 🙋🏼♀️🌷🇱🇺
Nice suggestion. Everyone has their own thoughts on colors. My husband and I are often NOT on the same page when we are picking out colors for a quilt. 😄
just found you. love your personality and your video.
long time quilter here. Did you know that a dark center historically indicated a death because the hearth fire had gone out?
Thank you! And no... I had never heard that before. Learn something new every day, thanks so much for sharing and watching!
You don’t need to cut your strips ahead of time. Just cut as you go.
True, but it would be a bummer to find your short part way thru. I'm more of an anal person that wants it all laid out and organized ahead of time to make sure I have the right fabric where I want it. 😁🤪
But everyone needs to do what works for them. Thanks for suggesting to others this might be an option that would work well for them.
My maiden name was Haney. Wonder if we are related?
My guess would be not, as Kevin has a pretty small family and Marilyn Haney doesn't ring a bell with him. Thanks so much for watching!
Nevermind the question about the strip length. It is 12 1/2”. Sorry.
Glad u figured it out. Sorry I didn't have time to get in to review to be sure I gave u the right answer. Thanks for letting me know
I hope that marker didn't bleed through onto your material. 😱
Nope, all good. But a good thing to think about!
I was thinking the same thing when I seen it
I know all about off kiltor
😜😆 Don't we all!!!
Log cabin quilt sewing orcer
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful jelly roll. Have you considered writing a script? You change your mind more than once and that’s confusing.
I do more of that now than when I first started. Working on getting better. :-)
WOW Am I confused
Sorry to hear that. Let me know if you have questions.
Instructions are not clear regarding the amount of fabric for each stack and the sizes that they were to be cut. Too much bouncing back and forth to follow instructions with confidence. Consequently, I have made errors in cutting and now have to try and salvage this jelly roll. Not happy. Would not recommend this video.
Sorry you did not find it helpful.
Go around in a square not a circle
😎
Lots of jumping around making it confusing
apologies for that. I got better as I did more videos. :-)
At minute marker nine minutes and 30 seconds when you were trimming off the edges, that’s not the recommended ruler technique. The majority of your ruler should be sitting on your fabric so if your rotary blade slips it’s not going to cut the good fabric that’s on the right. So you would’ve had to cut the right hand side since you are right handed
That way the width of your ruler would be protecting your fabric
And it looks like you are using a Martelli mat therefore you should be measuring off of the mat and not that slippery somewhat inaccurate ruler. I almost never use those rulers anymore since I bought the Martelli mat. I also bought one of their nonslip strip rulers definitely holds fabric in place and I go off the markings on the mat instead
Thanks for letting me know.
Don't want to be mean, but please get more organized
I'm a work in progress!! Thanks for watching
You don't want to be mean, yet here you are being bossy. There's better ways and more grammatically correct ways to say things. I think the video is super fun. I personally do better following along with someone that isn't the quilt police and their enjoyment of the hobby shines through, like this video.
How terribly rude! If you can be anything in life, be kind! If you don’t like a video, then move on!!! Don’t be nasty to other quilters, it is not cool and not acceptable in this community.
Ok, Karen. Let’s go to your house and critique you. I bet I could find something. Nobody is perfect. Move on…..K
You are mean, rude, and disrespectful. Creativity works best when you are flexible and unorganized. Go watch a math video.
Beautiful !
Thanks, Thank you for watching. 🥳
