  • When a new orangutan baby is born at the zoo, keepers become concerned that the new mother is ignoring her younger child.
Bornean orangutans are a relative of the Sumatran orangutan, although they have broader faces and are slightly darker in colour. There are three different subspecies of the Bornean orangutan that are attached to different parts of Borneo:
Northwest Bornean orangutans are the most threatened subspecies. Their habitat have been affected by logging and hunting; only 1,500 Northwest Bornean orangutans remain. Many of their habitat spaces have become small and fragmented over time.
Northeast Bornean orangutans are smallest in size; they're found in Sabah and eastern Kalimantan.
Central Bornean orangutans have at least 35,000 of their kind in the wild, making them the least endangered subspecies of the Bornean orangutans.
From The Secret Life of the Zoo: This series gives viewers behind the scenes access to Chester Zoo's 21,000 animals and the people who work there. The zoo's keepers are interviewed in each episode about the various animals and incidents, whether it's orangutans escaping their enclosure or tigers getting into scraps.

I’m not inherently anti-zoo and obviously I’m all for conservation of these amazing apes, but I don’t really understand what this program is trying to accomplish. They have Sumatran Orangutans living in unnatural social situations, and apparently spending lots of time on the ground. This behavior they’re learning in captivity will doom them to a life of captivity. Sumatran Orangs are even more arboreal than their Bornean cousins, because they have to worry about tigers in addition to snakes. No orangutan that feels safe playing on the ground will survive in the wild.
On top of that, babies don’t learn all they need to in four years. Trippa deserves all his mother’s attention until he becomes an independent adolescent. He wouldn’t have a baby sister in the wild to share his mother with. Of course he’s struggling to adjust in such an unnatural environment! As undeveloped as he is, he should still be suckling. It’s very distressing watching his mother refuse to even let him near. He should have had an advantage over the orangutans in forest school programs, but now he has no hope of a wild future and no mother.
Why didn’t she have a hormonal implant? It’s well known that pregnancies happen closer together in captivity if no precautions are taken. Breeding captive orangutans and making no effort to teach wild behaviors does very little if anything to save a species on the brink of extinction. Any orangutan physically capable of a free life should be in a rehabilitation program, not playing on the ground with other babies behind glass. There just aren’t enough left to spare.

I cannot understand how these "zoo keepers" can perform in front of a camera and talk innocently about a problem they caused. Even as actors they would be considered garbage. They have watched this animal suffer for four years and they talk about the situation as if it were an unpredictable emergency. They use all the buzz words they just learned in school and are being allowed to play with the lives of animals that require experience of people three times their age. I feel sorry for ALL of the animals in their care but hopefully by the grace of God the animals will die peacefully and not be subjected to the torture caused by the incompetence and arrogance of these childish "zoo keepers." @@tobyarcand2522 I agree. Being that monkeys, apes, and humans share various common ancestors through evolution, the similarities are interesting. I watched a male adult monkey catch fruit each time spot on each time. When a child learns to catch a ball it is a process. I wonder how the monkey learned to catch so well. Probably from humans but still I thought it was interesting. The way these two moms watched and learned from each other reminded me of the saying monkey see monkey do.

Horrible what happens in Borneo and Sumatra, for palm oil and the pet trade there!!! So sad! Since I was a little kid I spent 90 %of my time in a Zoo with Orangutans, just love them! They are the Pacifists of the great Apes! With their lovely red hair and their peaceful Attitude 🦧❤️❤️❤️🦧🦧🦧🦧🦧
