Yeah I love it. It turns watching a movie into an all evening affair a lot of the times, but I come away very enriched. Not that I am a big into digital, but streaming made a big mistake not using full screen designed title menus like discs do for each movie/ show imo. They do have special features available on fandango, and prime which is cool, but the UI is pretty bunk, and there's very little, if any on most subscription streaming services.
35:32 I am super appreciative of what Dan is talking about here. Really enjoyed the work he did on the MST3K sets. In 2023 and 2024 Film Masters was probably my favorite label. All the commentaries, interviews, and the side-by-side restoration comparison video features are so damn cool to see for movies I would not have expected a label to show love to.
Absolutely wonderful interview, Heath! For the record, if I know a release has work done by Daniel/Ballyhoo for it, it becomes a must-buy for me. Daniel’s passion and knowledge for the projects he tackles always comes through in spades.
Great conversation with Daniel Griffith! I think good extras give you greater insight and appreciation of the subject movie. I'm a backer of Griffith's Empire Pictures doc, and I'm looking forward to its release.
I know when I see a lot of features, I count that as an extra reason to buy or upgrade. And when there’s a full-length documentary I actually count that as another movie in my count of physical movies.
i often am just as excited about the docs features audio commentaries as the movies themselves since 2002 when i bought the LOTRs extended & the alien quadrilogy
I buy lots of Blu-rays and DVDs, but if I'm not going to get any extras then I'll just stream it. The main factor in what I purchase is almost always the amount of and the quality of the special features on the disc.
I love buying packages loaded with special features. The best ones are Fright Night with that great Your So Cool Brewster documentary and Evil Dead 2 blu ray was loaded.
Recently I've started collecting those old "2 Disc Special Edition" DVD releases. It started by accident when I found a couple at a thrift shop and I thought to myself "I saw these movies at JB HiFi recently and they were both single disc without an option to get the second disc". So my collection had added to it "Die Hard", "Armageddon" and "Men In Black II" and I've gone on from there. Now there are some movies where I don't mind, I just want the movie. But I never say no to the added material. Previously I couldn't afford to pay extra if there was a single disc option. Now I [usually] can. So I do.
Love bonus features, especially a commentary. Film Detective 🔍was Excellent and is missed. I had hopes of a Restoration of George Pal's Destination Moon with them. And Film Masters is fantastic. I love and have every one so far. Always outstanding extras! This was a fantastic cast! ✌️❤️😀
Yeah, it's weird to me how many people care about the packaging and not special features. If I really love a movie, I want to dive deeper into it and watch the special features. Of course it's cool if a movie has cool artwork, but the only thing I really care about is what's on the disc. And that's the movie and bonus features. I even throw away slipcovers, and even lots of the cases, and I keep the disc and cover in the plastic sleeves that Heath featured before, cuz I lack lots of shelf space, and at the end of the day, like I said, the disc is all that matters. Steelbooks also is something I never will understand.
Shudder and itn are the reasons I still buy regular DVD's. They obtain a lot of independent and low budget horror movies from around the world to put on physical media and most often DVD is the only option available. So either buy it or miss out on new styles of movie making and content you have never seen before.
i love the honest commentaries the ones that talk about how the actors didn’t get along and the director was a violent dictator etc.. the abyss, heavens gate, cleopatra etc.. but i also loved how genuine the LOTRs friendships were. i guess it depends on how good the documentary makers are
With a collection of over 3000 movies/sets, bonus features are the #1 consideration of what I buy. If it's film only, it's gotta be a cheap price for me to consider it. I'll be honest, I can get about anything to watch somewhere online but features are what I desire the most and make me want to put it on my all. -Hearing Daniel talk about THE BEAST doc makes me want to buy it and I've never heard of it. -Beautiful to hear someone appreciate WATERWORLD like I do. Stated so well. -Nostalgia gushing docs are such a waste of time for me personally, glad this was addressed
I don't agree that bonus features are being taken for granted these days. If anything, I feel that most people don't care about them at all. They're perfectly happy just watching an inferior, streamed version of whatever they want to watch (and forget about) while it's us collectors of physical media who are passionate about buying superior packages filled with the good stuff. In other words, there are still fantastic bonus features being made, but they've moved on to the premium market.
You mean like the limited collector's edition of The Keep? To be fair with Oscar from VS, he's in a mood because the guy who owns the only surviving film negatives to Cannibal the Musical told Oscar to take a hike.
@@dustbin5044 I don't care about The Keep, but yes, any limited or unlimited version matters. Even if all you get is a dusty old trailer, it's more than nothing.
Methinks my pals Heath and Daniel are too polite. One of the main reasons RUclipsrs are ceasing to review bonus features is because they, in their egomania, see themselves on equal footing as the filmmakers producing the supplements. So they don't want to give the extras any oxygen, out of jealousy. Heath is one of the rare good ones who doesn't act out of this jealous instinct.
i was disappointed with arrows waterworld documentary i’d come to expect a lot more from things i heard over the years like costner having his bald spot cgi’d out and his narcissism although i don’t know how accurate it was but it seemed much more interesting than what i got on that disc
I'm a bonus features guy, but now studio releases do very little for older releases, oftentimes leaving a lot off and anything new is like 5 minute interviews. You're telling me you called that person in for a 5 minute interview? Really? Instead of making one documentary type feature that equals 45 minutes, they are splitting 5 minute interviews to beef up the bonus features content as a sales gimmick. People aren't pointing out them because they are being screwed into thinking they'll be more and are disappointed. I recently got the Demolition Man release from Arrow Video & it's a great release. But those interviews for the most part are mediocre. The main draw is the new commentaries. None of the deleted scenes and subplots are viewable. Sylvester Stallone, Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt are nowhere to be seen on the disc. I do miss the candid interviews where the truth about the behind the scenes issues are discussed. Those were always my favorite. Hell the recent Rocky set is pitiful. Don't get me wrong, the quality of the video is great. But where's the Workprint cut of Rocky V? Why not have them as deleted scenes? Where's the commentary tracks for the sequels? Where's a documentary about the franchise & legacy? Hell there's several legacy features not on there. The In the Ring documentary? Gone. The Making of Rocky 4 Director's Cut is edited. The Creed films which have 4K's already aren't in the set. All we got new was a Director's Cut of Rocky 6. I only got the 4K set because I never upgraded my DVD collection to Blu-ray & felt it was time just in case disc rot ever sets in for the DVD's (they haven't yet)
Inflation feel playing big factor why some companies pull back blue-ray, but LG if this correct will make blue-ray players if see high demand. Hey old fashioned film, vintage records, plus malls start make comeback
The only problem in putting long documentaries and other extras on discs, it makes every release a special edition that sells for 40-50$. But since every movie is somebody's favorite, who decides which one gets the SE treatment? Like, i paid for Demolition Man 4k, but i'd never pay the same money for Virtuosity. I'd much prefer 4-movie packs for the same price, but then studios will cram multiple movies on one disc at lower bitrate and make them look like crap. Mill Creek was doing that for a while, but i think they stopped. Either way, boutique labels are the way to go now, they're the ones keeping the business alive. Disney seems to be coming around by putting Dolby Vision on their recent releases. But then you have morons like James Cameron who pretend to care, but do a crap job with beloved movies that fans were waiting for a disc release forever (don't buy True Lies or Aliens, those releases are a total disrespect to fans)
I hate the functionality of blu-ray. The resolution is preferable, but the operation and navigation leaves A LOT to be desired. Regular DVD will always be king for that.
@NewSonyWonderHappyMadisonFan whether anyone agrees or not, no one asked for any of these comments. So typing "no one asked" in a comment section is completely pointless and rather ignorant. Giving your opinion is the whole point. Feel free to say something clever, like "womp womp," to put me in my place.
Behind the scenes features on Blu-ray and DVDs are half the reason I buy physical media. Really enjoyed this interview.
Yeah I love it. It turns watching a movie into an all evening affair a lot of the times, but I come away very enriched. I loved the medium of movies since 1960!,that is how old I am
Supplements are usually the biggest factor in what I choose to purchase. Great interview, as always.
Yes, they are often the ONLY reason to upgrade.

Slipcover Steve says 'if it doesn't have a slipcover, it's not worth buying.'
You're honest and good.
Full Moon was doing Supplemental Material on VHS before it was ever a norm.
The first I remember was "No Strings Attached" making of Puppet Master.🤔
I have the Castle Freak VHS collector's edition which has over 30 minutes of bonus content. It's part of my permanent VHS collection.
@dustbin5044 awesome!👍

I belong to a few war/military movie groups and *The Beast* (1988) always comes up as the most underrated war movie ever made.
Clearly someone who decks out their 🌲 like that, loves themselves them bonus features.
I always make a point to watch the disc's special features after the movie. 9 times out of 10 I end up appreciating the movie more.
