My friends always thought I was crazy talking about so many versions of movies, from aspect ratios (Open matte needs to become more of a standard), to audio, so on. Now I can EASILY show them what im talking about. With one of my favorite movies no less. I appreciate it.
I applaud the effort you put into this. A very well made analysis. I would have preferred a new scan over the re-use of one made more than 10 years ago, with more respect given to the construction of the film (grain). It's also very disappointing that this new 4K release does not contain more audio options, and all of the amazing special features which exist. And yes - that menu screen sucks!
One of points he makes and a valid one at that is that the original negative simply do not have any new information to be scanned. Cheap production and optics plus the actual focus being all over the place.

Great feature, I was blown away in 1985 watching this on my mates crappy VHS on his crappy 19 inch telly, I had the DVD, again blown away, had the Blu , yes blown away and yesterday on my 55 inch 4k HDR enabled TV I sat there grinning like a Cheshire cat. Just watch the bloody movie and enjoy.
I remember seeing this at a cinema. It was not a high end cinema. Believe it or not it was in the basement of a multistory car park. They even gave out bumper stickers "Touch my car and you are Terminated"
Thank you so much for this insanely detailed comparison. Major respect, also for your objectivity. But sadly I'm still angry at the recent 4K release and my reasons have not changed. Maybe I'm too sensitive, because watching movies is my life and sometimes even making them, so I might notice details that the other half of the film viewing population does not. Or they don't care, because quality decline is so accepted nowadays in picture and audio related media. A compressed stream is enough for most and many monitors are not calibrated anyway. But for me and other people who do care and do notice, this is a slap in the face, especially combined with Cameron's rude comments. I have "The Terminator" in my Letterboxd Top Four of all time and seen it countless times. Starting with TV and VHS the movie has always felt the same to me on any medium, except for three changes over the last two decades that kill a home release for me. I can't deal with the new sound effects. Period. I also don't want the movie to look muddy green, like a David Fincher film set inside The Matrix. That's just not how this film is supposed to look. And third and last, I can't deal with an A.I. upscale. I agree with your resolution comparison and I really don't care about resolution. I still own a VHS copy of this movie. But I do care about the A.I. recreation of the images. I can see it in every frame. And I bet most people feel it too, at least subconsciously. I guess it's just accepted because the general perception has been tainted by ugly shit like motion smoothing. But these images are wrong and artificial. I can see with my own eyes that the 4K A.I. remaster was de-noised and then artificially sharpened again and I see it in every frame. It even affects how the images look in motion, especially when people with longer hair like Sarah move in the frame. It feels in parts like the early A.I. generated videos we all saw. It's wrong. Of course diminished here, but it is there and it's so fucking distracting. Just because it's not as bad as with "True Lies" doesn't mean we should be thankful for this. I don't want more of this. And the irony is, it could have been better and more authentic with less time, work, effort and money put into it. Just give us the latest scan, colour-corrected and even upscaled to 4K if you must. Add the real theatrical mono mix as an option (just rip it from the earliest LaserDisc for all I care) and keep all the bonus materials that already exist. It's perfectly doable. And this thing would have sold like crazy. You can add any George Lucas CGI nonsense and new 7.1 mixes you want as an option. If Cameron wants to spend additional money because a missing razor blade in one shot keeps him up at night... Fine, do it. But preserve the original as well. Give us the option. I'll pay more if this means another physical disc is needed. I'd pay up to 50-60 bucks just to have this movie in the best quality available. But I want the movie that it has been for all these years and that has made it a classic. Making the whole thing green is too much of a change. Completely changing the sound effects is too much. And having it look like a computer remade every frame is the worst you could do to it. That's literally the point of the story itself... Keep it a human work of art, not a cold, lifeless product from a machine. Sorry for being so negative, but it broke my heart. And I'm not saying boycott it or anything. If you can deal with these massive changes made, go for it. But I feel left behind and fear this is going to happen with a lot of 4K releases from now on. So I need to send the signal that I'm not satisfied with the way things are going. But thanks again for this great video, awesome work! 🙂
I agree with this... for me, ifCameron want's to dick about then fine get on with it and treat all your films like tehcnical experiments, however at least show respect to the people who want the best ORIGINAL version, so realease the 4k for exmaple with the "4k Remastered Original" and the "Cameron's just a tool Remastered/Amended/NOT Original 4k" disc as well and then we would be all happy but to release 4 of his biggest films ever including this one tampered and IMHO spoilt it beyond me. True Lies was a shambles it really is the opening scene in the mansion OMG... it's like I was watching a cheap Asda/Wallmart TV from 2005... it's just appalling and actually detracts from the film as you keep seeing things that just aren't there or smoothed and tampered with. I'm 100% with this comment you nailed it mate. I've got £1,000's of ponds of nice equipment to get the best and these Cameron tampered are NOT in any shape or form the best... Aliens now looks like it was made on a shoe string and dreaful sets never even looking grimey and dirty like we all remember it.
@@MrPugheaven They won't do that, studios and directors (with few exceptions) are too scared to offer two versions, at risk of one massively outperforming another in sales. For example, black & white versus colourised movies in the VHS era, where when given the choice, customers were ambivalent at best to the colour versions. So it's take-it-or-leave-it from Cameron who wants us all to buy his generative AI experiment, or it's tough shit if you don't like it and want something that authentically represents the analogue film and audio it was created with. "Begone, basement dweller"
@@KevinStriker Yep would be interesting to know what the sales of the new 4k's have been, good, disappointing etc? I do know having seen the Aliens 4k, it'll be my Blu ray that gets put in and I'll have less resolution and no HDR if that picture is more authentic. Like you say, Cameron was so insulting to his audience but then again he always has been he doesn't care and has always been arrogant, amazing for someone who's not done a decent film in decades :-)
I’m not sure how accurate your videos are, but I have to say, I really appreciate what you do. I love learning new things, and I’m glad you’re able to share so much information in one video. It seems like you’ve put a lot of effort into making sure it’s accurate, and I think that’s really important. I know there are times when people prefer to express their opinions, but I think it’s important to remember that there’s a difference between fact and opinion. I also think that it’s important to have fun with what you do. I love movies, and that’s why I collect physical media. I have The Terminator on 4K Blu-ray disc, a 2012 Blu-ray disc, and a 2001 DVD. I also had a steelbook DVD, but I think I sold it because I don’t see it in my collection anymore. I remember watching The Terminator on DVD and seeing player-generated subtitles for the opening scene and some visible scratches in the picture. I wasn’t too happy with that format’s presentation (possibly the steelbook). I think that was probably the first time I ever double-dipped, and that’s why I sold the Definitive Edition steelbook afterward. By the way, have you ever thought about doing a deep dive into the 4K of T2? I know that most collectors hate it, and I’m curious to know why. I’m also curious to know what actually happened with that restoration/transfer.
Holy shit! This Is one of the nerdiest responses to an internet argument that i have ever seen....And i love It! In all seriousness, it's really refreshing to see someone discusión a topic with such nuance.
Thank you for this fantastic and fascinating video👍. A written 4K Blu-ray review will never be same again😂 I bought the steelbook 4k after viewing this video💿
I very detailed and informative video, thank you for all the hard work doing this! ❤ I loved the little tease in the end when you mentioned the upcoming video! 😂
So much work, so much precision that it's a shame you do not have much more subscribers/views. I agree with your conclusion on how so many complaints are just a posture and not reality based
I snagged a copy of that digital version of the 35mm film print and was happy with it, but seeing your take on it has made me reconsider. I just love this flick so much that I don't care about the bloopers that are visible when the proper aspect ratio isn't present (the opening shot of the Terminator puppet being moved by a rig, complete with the stage lighting, for example). Thanks for making this. It's great to find an objective opinion of the film's various versions with the digital know-how to back up their arguments.
This is an incredible deep dive which is so fascinating. For me, I'm really happy with 4k disc and much prefer the mono mix for like gun sounds etc - thanks
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen. I don't think the 4k is a disaster. But, with that said, I don't understand why Cameron and other studios can't just scan a negative, clean it up, and put it on a disc. I don't understand why AI has to be used, and fake grain placed back on an image. Just show us the film as it was filmed and give us the option of original audio. I don't know, it seems pretty simple to me. You wouldn't take the Mona Lisa and apply AI to it or add all kinds of filters over it, so I don't understand why they do it with movies. The work is the work. You did what you did. You filmed what you filmed. Quit thinking you need to adjust and change everything every few years. LOL! Still, I don't think most people would be able to tell that anything weird was done with the Terminator 4k. True Lies was another story. That one is pretty gross and Cameron should be shamed, endlessly, for that. LOL!
I've known about the German DVD mentioned in the 1998 chapter for years now, it fascinates me and is precisely why I don't shit on the 2012 remastered Blu-ray: Because a Germany-only DVD that predates the 2001 Special Editions randomly has the same blue-green bias in its colour timing as the 2012 Blu. I just don't feel right in calling it wrong without knowing that DVD's source.
Interesting stuff ! Anyways, i prefer the 2006 bluray with all the dirt and so on, i just cant take the green/teal tint, even the 35mm versions blue/magenta is better. I have that too. My first time watching this was in the late 80's on a VHS here in Finland when i was a teenager. So maybe i'm biased more to that. Too bad the 2006 version does not inlcude the original sound mix which i prefer too🤓
I just wanted to comment to say wow and of course, thank you. What an incredible experience to see all these editions presented and the differences explained perfectly. This video (and I'm sure others on your channel I'm yet to explore) should be used as a benchmark for anyone, wanting to learn what goes into a home video transfer. from a novice, no knowledge viewer who streams up to a supposedly full "RUclips expert" that claim to have an understanding/knowledge on mastering and grading and yet don't even have calibration applied to their home display panel. This video is Absolute 1st class in its execution, production and message. I'm am now happily subscribed to see what's next.
You can have best of both worlds. I have a panasonic ub820, a deticated 4k blu-ray player with great upscaling. Dvd's look really impressive, and the audio quality is also outstanding. Great review
@@LELABODEJAY You probably do yourself a disservice. After all we are talking about a film starring Arnold with his "awful" Austrian-German accent! :) Albeit that adds to the sense of a robotic killer.
I have absolutely no idea why it's so difficult to get the colour grading done properly. I'm not buying Cameron's movies while he adds teal to everything. 🙄
Really good video analysis from someone that clearly knows what they are talking about. Much appreciation for the time and effort that you have put in. I personally have no issue with the upscale. I don’t believe there is much more detail to be found with an expensive rescan. I also like the new colour grade and think it’s the best the movie has ever looked. I do however have an issue with the use of AI to add fake detail and sharpening. I think many won’t notice it but I believe others including myself seem to be more susceptible to it, and it actually creeps me out in a weird uncanny valley type way. The image regularly looks fake or slightly off. One scene in particular that stood out to me was with Sarah and Kyle at the motel, stood next to each other, their faces in soft focus, but their hair absolutely pin sharp and highly detailed like it had been drawn on top of the film. It really breaks my immersion.
I understand and not a big fan of IA too, but to me it's the best edition to date after years of crap and Cameron does not really want to do better apparently so I can live with that
My mind is BLOW by the level of research and quality that went into this video. Not seen here, I owned a VHS set with T1 and T2 in a large slipcase that had a hologram of Arnold on the cover. It included a third cassette, that ported over some of the laser disc documentaries.
Yes, the masters on it corresponds to the LD of the time. (1995 master if I remember correctly). Jay couldn't include every variation because that would make the video too dense, and it's already very dense! It was better to include the goalposts.
I find the AI upscale dissapointing but I have to admit the first 4k HDR release is good and this video makes some real good points, If I did not own the 2012 blu ray I would buy it, especially happy to hear that it includes the original mono track. I still prefer 35mm scans for the color but the the new 4k is fine.
Hi. Your work is amazing. Thank you! By the way, have you digitized all the editions from start to finish? Is there any way to access those digitizations? I have a digitized copy of my VHS, the Argentine edition, and another VHS from a broadcast on free-to-air television in the 1990s. Thank you!
That was great. I have been a fan since I saw it the first time. TV and VHS were my prefered ones. But today, I totaly adore the 4K restore. A little too clean. I have the 35mm scan and I think that it is too dark. Please do T2. Thanks
You know what? You've convinced me that this new 4K of the movie is completely worth it. I would have preferred it without AI tools and color that represented the original "Cameron Blue", but it becomes obvious that it hasn't been processed to death like some other Cameron movies, and that the HDR is tastefully done. The inclusion of the mono is also a big plus for me (it makes re-watches more fun to have multiple options -- if I spoke Japanese, that one with a ton of dubs would be so much fun to own). Thank you very much for doing this video!
@ buddy. This is one of the best RUclips videos I have ever seen. Thank you so much for all the effort - subscribed and will talk about this upload on my podcast next week!
This is easily the most thorough and well put together video explaining all of the differences in film and technology versions I have ever seen. Very, very well done! You earned a sub from me. I know A LOT about the Terminator films. But I learned multiple new things here, that even I didn’t know. You definitely made me a fan of your work. 🦾😎👍
I'm watching this on a 2012 Macbook Pro that I think was the last pre-Retina screen version (cheapest one to buy used in 2019, when I needed a Macbook Pro with some specific minimum specs for college). I didn't think it could display HDR properly, and it might not be able to since I don't have a proper HDR screen to compare it to, but I can still clearly see a difference between the HDR and non HDR images (possibly due to other factors besides HDR). I know this video is all about picture quality and not packaging but the version of the 2001 The Terminator DVD that I bought the first day it was out in stores in Canada has the foil cover with that awesome 2D holographic effect which is still one of my favourite covers in my entire optical disk collection. I presume the DVD itself is identical to the one in the plain cover version shown in this video since I don't see any difference with the menu.
Great video! However, I KNEW that you would leave out ONE version which I had - the SUPER VHS Terminator! LOL. Yes, it was official and it was comparable to the DVD.
Regarding the missing titles on the PAL Special Edition DVD - They actually are there, but not burned in, as you would prefer, but as player generated subtitles. Imagine my disappointment when I bought that several years ago.
I have the Blu-ray version released in the UK, which has him kneeling down on the front cover. The back says MGM 2015, 20th Century Fox 2015. So I'm guessing that's a 2016 release.
I own 2 rare versions of Terminator 2. Terminator 2 on DVD-18 Disc inside a embossed Aluminium cover. Out of print around one week after release. Also the big heavy Laserdisc version with several discs that includes tons of extras. I also own Terminator 2 standard version on LaserDisc.
@@KevinStriker Yeah, but still a rare release. Not the 2 disc version that came a week or two later, but the DVD-18 version. Not many movies were ever released on DVD-18 as i think the production of those were slower and more expensive. I think i own a Hallmark mini series on a DVD-18 too.
Second half of the video you are damage controlling and defending the new version so hard and completely lost the analytic and documentary style from the beginning.. 😮
@@LELABODEJAY it's just not the type of restoration that shouldn't be the definitive version or preferred version for preservation. Instead it's a bad attempt at making a film not shot on good film stock look more like a film shot on a higher budget or film stock same with the sound which they messed up the mono/stereo mix. Which is a disservice to what the film achieved with its budget and legacy on what would be considered today a small budget.
T1 was an unreal Sci-fi movie at the time, very well made. I am not hopeful where the future leads to in another 40 yrs unfortunately. Look at societies now, millions of apps run billions? of ppl's lives around the world on mobile devices phones, tablets, yuck
The 35mm fanscan is my preferred version of the film, until a newer fanscan comes along in 4K, rather than a 1080p encode. Despite it being from a print rather than the negative, it's at least a scan of a film element rather than an ai upscale of an older master. Pure laziness on Cameron's part. And before anyone says "but the scan is barely a decade old, why bother with a new scan?", boutique labels with a fraction of the money Cameron has do new scans/restorations of films they've previously released very often: e.g. Arrow Video's 2K scans of the first three Hellraiser films back in 2015, and then doing new 4K scans/restorations from the negatives of those same films for their UHD set in 2023. In this video's logic, Arrow should have just taken their old 2K scans and put them in Topaz AI and call it a day. But labels like Arrow actually care, unlike Jimmy Cameron...
The 35mm that leaked on X was badly captured + add some additional color timing done, so it's completely remote from the original look. There was a german U-Matic made in 1985 that is a straight telecine from an interneg that does have the original look but it is very rare and impossible to get.
This to me shows that when you purchase the film you will never get what's in theater. But at the end of the day if you have watched the film either way you have seen the film
Bonjour. Bonne Année . Je tiens a te féliciter pour la qualité de ton travail et l'investissement , pour nous sortirent des vidéos test de grande qualité. Merci
I'm sorry but but the part about the new mono (38:14) is just wrong - it clearly removes anything above ~9 kHz and not only are those missing frequencies not "subtleties" but also you certainly don't need any special equipment to hear the difference, it will be noticeable even on the cheapest setups. Other than that great video!
@@LELABODEJAYwhen you do the Star Wars video make sure to get the original rental copy but the Betamax edition since it is supposedly the only release of the original mono mix which is different from every other version released with its dialogue.
Oh come on! It's The Terminator 😂 of course a new restoration would be worth it and profitable. It's not some minor B- movie from the 1960's and even some of those recieve 4K Blu-ray restorations this days by small companies dedicated to film preservation. Cameron is just obsessed with AI and doesn't care anymore about film preservation, he just cares about making his movies seem much more modern that what they really are, he is taking old-fashioned approches to film restoration we saw in the '2000s by the Infamous Lowry Digital that are not used anymore especially since 4K Blu-ray exists. There's no excuse for them to use that same old master from 13 years ago with those ugly green filters still on the picture and even less to use AI which only makes live action pictures worse always. Changing the look, the focus and creating fake details while erasing real details from the film. It's a disaster, even if "it doesn't look as bad as others", in the end it's the same shit. No one should be buying nor supporting these practices. Other companies have started to copy these bad habits and started ruining movies again.
@@LELABODEJAY thats cool bro, i'm just hoping maybe by 2026, 2027 they might do a New T2 Remaster similar to how we got T1 on BD in 2006 then another one in 2012, Cameron is a revisionist he will keep doing new transfers every couple years, i love the New T1 Transfer i just wish T2 was as equally impressive, we will have to wait and see 🤞
I was luck enough to find an original 35mm scan of both Terminator movies, they look fantastic! Thank said, the new 4k disc look incredible as well. We can enjoy both equaly. Thank you kindly for your tremendous work and effort.
The Orion laserdisc that is open matte as shown on a 4x3 is a widescreen 1:66 ratio so isn’t that French V2000 also another true open matte release? As for the pan & scan part I was under the impression that it only meant when the image was panning within the matted widescreen image to create the fullscreen picture not also for those that create an alternate 4x3 image like a majority of the terminators releases. since they show image that the matted 1:85 widescreen frammed versions do not show. For example apocalypse now; it was released pan & scan since the open matte ratio is 2:00 which is what the original widescreen releases showed the film at and the original releases on tape & Lds being 4x3 show image the now all modern releases matted at 2:35 don’t show but unlike the terminator the anamorphic image for apocalypse now is still panned due to the framing; which is what ruins the intent of the film and is what an actual pan & scan release means
It's not real 4k.....it's an upscale of a 2k restoration. This was a film shot and finished on Film. They could've gone back to the original 4k scan and do a 4k restoration. If Japanese film companies can be bothered to do it for Godzilla films. Then Cameron and other filmmakers can spend the money doing a new 4k restoration.....hell Criterion even did a 4k rebuild of Shape of Water recently for a film that was finished at 2k. There is also a huge difference between an upscale and one done by sloppy AI algorithms that don't have anyone at the wheel making sure errors aren't present. And your minimizing of the AI artifacts refuses to mention that these aren't issues that were present in previous versions. These are new issues because of the lazy and cheap way Cameron went about this upscale. This isn't a restoration. What makes this so frustrating and disastrous is that this will most likely be the last version of the film we get on physical media. As they won't likely be going back to do a new scan and restoration
Point is, they SHOULD and COULD have a 4k native image, especially when their tools introduce focus issues and the other AI issues. You CAN upscale well obviously. Your example is flawed as we are viewing through RUclips and the bike scene looks shocking
Thank you for this. I’ve been watching this movie for the past 20 years and have it on multiple formats. This version is the best the movie has ever looked, and the mono being on there is more than I was expecting.

@@ThisIsTheRoad thanks for your massive comment. 🤗
I mean the 2001 DVD in terms of colour looks better than the 4K. It's crazy! 🙄

Thanks 🙏
LOL!
If you sit in front of computer you feel the nead to change somthing even smal slider can have huge efect
Stunning video, as always!

This is excellent and clearly has taken a long time to produce. Thank you!
Thank you so much for doing such a tremendous job. Really cool content!
@@frankbizzoco1954 believe me it will be more than worse with my bad English accent and I would have kill myself making it
@@LELABODEJAY You probably do yourself a disservice. After all we are talking about a film starring Arnold with his "awful" Austrian-German accent! :) Albeit that adds to the sense of a robotic killer.
Great video. Really interesting. Thanks a lot. Subscribed! 😎
I understand and not a big fan of IA too, but to me it's the best edition to date after years of crap and Cameron does not really want to do better apparently so I can live with that
Wow! Quite possibly the most comprehensive video comparison! Wonder you did or will later do StarWars New Hope lols
i love the gun sfx in this film tbh
they just sound remarkably like DooM sound effects and I freaking love that
My mind is BLOW by the level of research and quality that went into this video.
You did your homework bud 👍
oh my mate! what a job you have done! Thanks!
Extraordinary video once again, it's amazing the work accomplished !
Awesome video my Guy keep it up 💯
I find the AI upscale dissapointing but I have to admit the first 4k HDR release is good and this video makes some real good points, If I did not own the 2012 blu ray I would buy it, especially happy to hear that it includes the original mono track.
Thank you!
Hello thanks. Sorry no, I digitized only the same clips of each film
They should use this video to market the sales of Terminator 4K!
Thank you very much for doing this video!

is the blu-ray that was bundled with Genisys the 2012 or 2006 version?
2012, they stopped producing the 2006 version after the remaster appeared.
Fantastic video, brother. Appreciate all your research and hard work.

Fantastic video, as usual.
The Star Wars video will probably be as long as the movie itself, lmao.
👏👏👏👏👏
The 35mm that leaked on X was badly captured + add some additional color timing done, so it's completely remote from the original look. There was a german U-Matic made in 1985 that is a straight telecine from an interneg that does have the original look but it is very rare and impossible to get.
This to me shows that when you purchase the film you will never get what's in theater. But at the end of the day if you have watched the film either way you have seen the film

Sorry for that… as you should notice I am more an image guy

What an amazing video - so much work - thanks so much! 🙌
How much can I donate to get a copy of that domestic mono audio?
You don't have to, it's on the UHD!
@ No it’s not that great. I need the 1991 laserdisc version.
Point is, they SHOULD and COULD have a 4k native image, especially when their tools introduce focus issues and the other AI issues.
