  • The Intel i5-12500 vs. i5-12400 differences are small on paper (other than the IGP), so we wanted to see whether it's worth buying the i5-12500 over the 12400, ft. benchmarks for games & IGP.

    Watch our Intel UHD 770 benchmarks: • Intel Integrated Graph...
    The 12500 vs. 12400 comparison mostly boils down to the frequencies -- base and boost -- for CPU-bound performance; however, there is an IGP component difference in the UHD 770 vs. UHD 730 (and frequency differences there) as well. It's not as much our focus, but we previously tested these IGPs and can show those results to help you form an opinion on whether it's worth it.

      Both IGPU:s are sucky, don't actually tell the whole story for anyone considering it.
      If you care about IGP because GPU prices are high. The better one has 33% more flops than the worse one.
      I would say that 33% faster is in a different class. And that faster one sucks also makes that difference even more noticeable.
      And if I use the price difference to 12400f as GPU they both have about the same price/perf while beating 1030 in price/perf :D
      There is just nothing I could actually recommend for anyone to get as GPU right now other than use what you already have.
      On the other hand, waiting for GPU prices to drop and Zen4 to come to market is probably a more sensible option for anyone not NEEDING a new machine right now.

      Not a solution, but people should manually overclock. It's not as hard as people let on it is, it's just really time consuming. There's a great guide by integralfx on github about DDR4. The same general philosophy still applies. Find your highest frequency with very loose timings, once frequency is found, find your tightest primaries, then find your tightest secondaries, and if you're a glutton, find the tertiaries. Just make sure to test the hell out of your ram. Run 6-8 hours worth of testing before you consider it stable and move on, otherwise you'll get deeper in to the process, only to find that the error is coming from frequency or something. My XMP settings work, but they're far from what my ram is actually capable of. With ASUS not working with XMP, it's probably because one of the XMP settings is too tight, by manually overclocking you'll be able to find out which setting is throwing it off.

    • @ikjadoon
      @ikjadoon 2 года назад

      Just re-watched GN’s i9-12900K review: their issue was G.SKILL DDR5-6000 on ASUS! I updated to a newer BIOS (1003 vs GN’s launch BIOS of 0503 or 0702) and used a similar kit (mine is 6000 / C36) without a problem. Hit XMP I, reboot, done in 20 seconds. GN also tried Gear 1 which I assume your friend isn’t using-ADL IMC won’t run any DDR5 at Gear 1 (not without extreme coaxing / instability).
      My thoughts so far: could be that really tricky 5600 / C36 kit (I’d try a refund or selling it 😭), an older BIOS (update; 1003 has many DDR5 fixes), 4x sticks (ADL IMC can only do 3600 or 4000 w/ 4 sticks-very tough), or Gear 1 (all DDR5 is essentially Gear 2 by definition). It could also just be a bad stick / mobo / IMC, but trying JEDEC first may help rule those out.

    • @ikjadoon
      @ikjadoon 2 года назад

      Apologies; the tricky 5600 / C36 kit. Don’t understand how a faster set is more compatible, but OCN (Overclock.net ASUS Z690 megathread) is littered with people having trouble even booting with that kit on ASUS DDR5 (even 1003!). G.SKILL seemingly fucked that one up beyond repair: perhaps G.SKILL can also RMA it for a better revision? That kit alone has-unfortunately IMO-turned people against Samsung ICs even though they clock relatively well + have tight timings.

    I'd say that if you consider the whole audience of the channel as uninterested in any IGP at all, then the obvious choice is the 12400F. But if they're considering the need for an iGP almost at all, then the value of the UHD 770 does justify it.
    So in which case, I'd say my recommendations would be (considering prices to be generally proportional to today, not considering sales): 12400F for no-iGP, 12500 for iGP.

    I fully understand not really diving into the codec stuff as gaming is very much a focal point of your channel and your audience. The 12500 is already kind of a niche part when the 12400 exists (and I'd argue that for your audience, the non-F SKUs are already niche parts so it's a niche within a niche), so why not go into those niche areas where the 12500 might make a meaningful difference over the 12400, rather than just rolling out another set of standard benchmarks which mostly tell us what we already know?
    For example, does the extra codec engine meaningfully increase the number of simultaneous 10-bit 4K HEVC streams a 12500 can transcode to 8-bit 1080p AVC for something like a Plex server that someone is running on their main PC? Plex also supports hardware HDR tonemapping using the GPU for acceleration, is the UHD 770 more performant here than the UHD 730?
    Or perhaps is the quality of Quick Sync Video high enough that it provides a meaningful alternative to NVENC, especially for those who pair this with say a 6700 XT where AMD's AVC encoder is not particularly great for low-bit rate live-streaming on Twitch by comparison. Does the 12500 retain higher gaming performance than the 12400 in that scenario?
    I also understand that your desire for a rigorous testing methodology in all things would make pieces like that much more work than something like this (i.e. research, design, development, and testing of that methodology all for the sake of one content piece), but even an exploratory piece that's deliberately not a review and therefore not as rigorous could be useful.
    Again, totally respect that's well beyond what you were going for here, and not to take away anything from the work you already do (and we appreciate it!), but I feel like there might actually be something meaningful for a small sliver of users where the few bucks extra the 12500 might cost could make sense (PCs being used for business vs gaming, Plex/Jellyfin/Emby servers, and streaming with an AMD GPU is all I can really think of though).

    One thing I've seen over the years: The more obscure intel CPU SKUs are usually a bit overlooked during demand surges, so there will occasionally be, for example, at 10500 available for less than a 10400. So, I would say treat them as mostly equivalent *other than* the fact that availability and susceptibility to inflated prices may be different, so the 500 SKU gives you a chance to nab *something* at MSRP when the 400 SKU is overpriced. In addition to QuickSync like you mentioned, I could see the improved IGP being helpful to game streamers who use a DGPU. It could help a lot to offload the video encoding from the CPU and DGPU while a heavy-duty AAA title is running, particularly for a twitchy first-person shooter who needs _all_ the FPS. I'd still buy the 12500 instead of the 12400 because I've been burned before by cheaping out on the 100 MHz difference. 😅 (It was 2002 and 100 MHz increase meant a lot more then, but once bitten, twice shy, right?) 👍️

    Just quick suggestion: please include a few key e-sports games benchmarks with these IGPUs, as people building 'budget gaming PCs' or SSFX builds that choose this solution without a dedicated GPU will likely want to play games like LoL, DotA, Valorant, Apex, etc. It would be really useful for a lot of players on a budget to know if a certain IGPU is enough for 120fps, for example, in those games.
    Perhaps, in a game like LoL, there would really be a useful difference between the 730 and 770 in terms of FPS.

    I'm a little disappointed that there wasn't an attempt to find software that uses a feature of the IGP just to show if there is a reason or difference (such as for video editing) or not. *ONLY* focusing on gaming on *any* IGP is pointless. Obviously with nearly identical specs, they're going to perform nearly identically at most tasks. It's the edge-cases that exist, or not, that is the only relevant information. That said, personally, the only reason to specifically care about an IGP in my use is to run the IGP on Linux as the main OS and VGA passthrough a DGPU for Windows gaming in a VM. Something that Intel's 12th gen CPUs should? be able to do well with e cores dedicated for Linux and p cores for Windows.

Put the 60hz on iGPU and your 144hz on your dGPU and watch Twitch while you game with no weird autistic Windows refreshrate issues (primary display feels less like 144 and more like 60 then) OR performance degradation in your game. same GPU with mismatching refreshrates lead to some issues when you have something like Twitch on your lesser display. What do you hope to learn that isn't blatantly obvious when comparing two nearly identical CPUs? And why did GN even make this video if they're not going to actually go into what edge cases might actually be other than obvious? Their review, this discussion, the whole thing just makes no sense. Can you overclock integrated graphics?

    I would love to see your team custom build a PC. But build everything yourself. From the CPU and motherboard to the GPU and ram

    Perhaps the 12500 has potentially higher overclock potential from BCLK due to the higher multiplier?

    Slight error in Power Consumption charts - the 12500 is listed at 6P/0E/6T here while the 12400 is 6P/0E/12T...unless HT was really intentionally disabled for the test.

    12500 has 6P cores and 6 threads on your power consumption graphs, the rest appear to be correct
