Steve, You forgot to mention that I5-12400 has integrated GPU and the AMD one doesn't have. That's pretty significant for people like me that don't play games. And this probably affects power consumption of the CPU.
I was surprised when I heard it was actually going to exist. Currently planning on building a new itx build, so need to look over reviews now and check out prices for a 5600 Vs 12400(f) itx build to see what makes sense.
As a 3700x w/ B550 owner, this really helps give me some perspective as somebody who exclusively uses their computer for 1440p single player gaming. I've been thinking about upgrading, given the 5000 series price drops and the prospective 5800x3D. Seeing the very small performance uplift the newer generation offers, I think I'll pass and continue to see what AM5 has to offer. Thanks for all the work. I just bought some coasters to show support.
I am loving the fact that basically the pricing is so constant versus performance that a non technical person could theoretically buy based on price and for the most part hit the same performance regardless of manufacturer

Im sure they have this product during their R&D stage and they just observe intel dont have lower end product that time. So they decided to launch the higher end product "X" variant only to squeeze money to consumers.. That is business with no competition.. Totally unfavorable to us!

@@syrynx4454 Nah, not at all. If they released the 5600 back over a year ago when the X was out, its MSRP would've been 250-270 anyway, not the 200 it is now. Economics my good man. 😎👍
As a 5600X user, I'd advise all zen 3 users to use PBO and undervolt your CPU. It's just a couple of changes in your BIOS and in my case the 5600x hits 4.6GHz constantly on full load, lower temperature and lower consumption. Makes me wonder why it's not it's default setting, given how good it is. The channel Optimum Tech has a quick guide on it with results, if anyone wants to check it out.
Great content! Just wish that Intel had applied enough competitive pressure sooner so that AMD would have launched the 5600 a year ago. That 2021 'X' tax was crazy!
30$ extra on a 200$ part for a higher bin isn't "crazy" at all m8. If you think so then you need to go after the ENTIRE market! Also comparing a 1½ year old part to a new part and complaining about the price when it's virtually leveled out by now is - iffy at best!
intel already beat the previous ryzens with their 11th gen. amd was still selling out their stocks. both due to increased demand, chip shortage, and great marketing.
Back in December 2019 I bought the Ryzen 7 2700X for roughly $165, and I have just bought the Ryzen 5 5600 for the same price. Last realistic upgrade I'll do to this motherboard until I replace it in a few years, but I like how this AM4 architecture survived.
I've been running a 4690k since early 2016 and finally decided it was time for an upgrade so I picked up the 5600 on sale at 129.99 with a free copy of Uncharted legacy of theives collection which is worth 50 bucks. After seeing these benchmarks I'm feeling like I got a great deal.
You did, I used to have a 4690k with gtx 960 4gb and upgraded to a 5600x and rx 6600 last year and it's been brilliant (about 3x the performance of my old rig)..... I've now just ordered two 5600 and two more rx 6600 to upgrade my kid's pc's for Christmas
@@RealShadowreaper perhaps that's got something to do with the fact that the 5800 (non-X) is an OEM-only product and therefore the only place you'd find them in would be in pre-built PCs or ebay. Unless you've got a source to get the Ryzen 5800 that nobody knows about?

Regarding in-socket upgrades; I was completely sure the Haswell i5 in my 2013 build would die with the system. I stretched my budget to get that i5 so the whole build would last me years, "until the next build". I'm now in year 9 of owning this system. I can't justify dropping the cash for a new system because I'm not a professional, my gaming has dwindled to a few minutes per week, and even so, my RX 570 still has a $200 street price. But I could justify $40 for an 4C/8T Xeon with boosted frequencies. The productivity and usability boost is noticeable and respectable considering the price I paid. I guess the bottom line is, start with a chip that covers what you need it to do and don't overspend. Then if the need arises, upgrade.
Same situation here. I still have my i7-6700k from 7 years ago and I can't be any happier. Good CPU that gets the job done. I had to upgrade my GPU unfortunately to an RTX 2060S because of some software support issues I encountered (before the GPU shortage, fortunately), otherwise I would've kept my 1060 6GB. All tech RUclipsrs usually push the latest and greatest, that's their job, nothing wrong with that, but that puts pressure on the consumer. So yeah, upgrade only if you need.
I recommend waiting dro Cashback promo from MSI and Gigabyte and snatching a good b550 for 50€ in total. Coupling that with a 5600, you will have a CPU that is 100% faster in games than i7 4770k. Much smoother 1% lows in gameplay, i5 Haswell may become a stuttering mess in newer games nowadays. So you may want to look at this last AM4 platform as it will be couple years before DDR5 will be as cheap as DDR4 and so it's your last opportunity to upgrade before EoL for AM4 and LGA1700.

@@puffybuffy1503 I don't see how I'll be playing many more games with a 12900K versus a 4770 considering the GPU will have to stay the same... I am NOT paying 600€ for a NVidia 60 class card. 250€, maybe, for the OC version, but in this market I'd get a 1060 at best.
@ getting the i7 back when everyone was saying "an i5 is good enough for gaming" explains your longevity and was a really good buy. I got the 4690k and replaced it in January with a 12600k as it was really struggling with newer games/general tasks. I did consider buying a 4790k as a stopgap solution until a new system but when I saw the reviews of the 12600k my mind was made up!

@@thrashstronaut Sandy/Ivy Bridge and Haswell were legendary. Both the beginning and the end of an era. I'm proud my little i5-4440 survived 8 years. When I saw the 12400 I said to myself this is it, it's now or never. Sadly priorities are elsewhere and now my E3-1230v3 is ticking just fine. Growing up is bittersweet :')
Quick story, recently I purchased the 5600x over the i5-12400f. The reason being that when I took a trip to microcenter, I found a 5600x for $198, $20 more expensive than the Intel counterpart. However, the B550 MB where cheaper and had better features when compared to B660 MB. In other words, check whether the combo of CPU+MB offers the best value. Not Saying you should always go for a 5600x, just that you should consider the other requirements of your build.
@@bgop346 That's my suggestion. The more expensive B660 available was more expensive and had less features (e.g a worst audio codec) than the b550 counterpart. It just turned out that it made sense in my case scenario. It may be different for someone else.
Not only are they expensive, it's hit or miss just going in a store and grabbing one. Really have to research up first. Heck if you're really tight on money, grab a B450 instead, sure you lose PCIE 4.0 but it shouldn't matter as long as your GPU uses the whole X16 slot

Competition doesn’t do anything btw. There’s a reason why both of these companies stick to the same product for 4-5 years at a time and only change when it’s most convenient and cheap to do so.
As an R5 AM4 early adopter looking to upgrade, and with AM4 reaching EOL, I would like to see a comparison between the 1600(x), 2600(x), 3600(x), and 5600(x).
6:10, in this graph it would be really amazing to see the integral, effectively total cycles, plotted as at the bottom of the graph. Its really hard to make out just how much extra work is being done over the time, esp as one spikes and the other slides, and the integrals would show that really well.
IMO alderlakes biggest weakness is that their boards cost more likely due to having to add a pc-e 5.0 lane, as well as a beefier vrm requirement reletive to AMD. the cheapest board you can use without performance loss of some sort are like ~130 b660 boards, as most(if not all) boards under that have a measurable performance drop. AM4's budget motherboards on the other hand are much more plentiful and affordable.
100% agree, I like that Steve metioned that too in this video. And another complication with the LGA1700 boards would be, if there is anything more specific in needs, like a ITX board or even a ITX board with DDR4 from a specific vendor of which you prefer the bios ;D I tried configuring a Intel ITX build with my stepdad, but he dislikes Gigabyte and ASUS so I had to choose a MSI board... there is no such thing as a ITX DDR4 MSI Board on that platform :D so we went with the 5800X instead.
@@freemanzweidreifunf8025 Why blame Intel? Blame the board vendor for not having DDR4 ITX board. Even so, it's fine to get DDR5, in the long run, it's still going to work in future platform, not the other way around, even though it base clock meets JEDEC spec. I find it difficult to find Skylake compatible memory, all are rated 2.4GHz, or is 2.133 GHz as based, but once XMP turned on, it boot loops, and there's no update because it's out of support.
I'm a fullstack dev, just wanted to give you a benchmark suggestion... I often need to install a bunch of npm packages for example to strat an angular project, or an express web service. It'd be interesting to measure the performance of the CPU doing those tasks because they can be time consuming (compiling, decompressing). Also building docker images could be a great indicator of the CPU performance. I know this is a gaming oriented channel, but I'm sure a lot of people do this kind of things on a daily basis.
You can disect how well a cpu will perform in everything else based on the overall gaming benchmarks. However, amd has always seemed to excel in raw compute over intel for power. You cant go weong with either, tbh. Id pick amd though.
Same here, I'd want to see more production task metrics. Run some numpy array calculations for example, easy enough to do, just a couple of line of code.

Basically the difference is probably just binned chips right? So it took them long enough to have enough 5600x's that were just outside the bounds. Most of them are above it tho and could be overclocked (not that it gains that much)
It's called clearing inventory in preperation for the next CPU launch and making as much money as they can from older silicon they have lying around yes.
i have a 5600X o/c'd to 4.75ghz on air and some corsair ddr4 3600mhz lpx ram o/c'd to 3866mhz and in 3dmark compared to stock it's a 23% uplift in score for me. tell me that is not huge (granted it's mostly the ram that is responsible).
given that the 5800 is 300$ and the 5800x is 340$ right now, it's clear that the x is worth 40$. We also know that the 5800X3D is going to be 450$, now solving for D 450$=300$+3XD : D=(450-300)/3X : D=150/(3*40) : we can see that D is a contant equal to 1.25
Really looking forward to reviews on the 4100 and 4500 for ultra budget. Gotta know how they stack up to the 12100 and possibly even snagging used but older AM4 CPUs.
Me too. I did a couple of Ryzen 3100 builds for people in 2020 when those chips first came out. Four modern Zen 2 cores with SMT in budget systems was a godsend and I'm quite miffed that AMD decided to drop that segment like a hot potato for Zen 3. If Intel didn't step in, AM4 would've been sent to the graveyard with the 5600G being the most "affordable" SKU for that generation.....
Judging by their specs I don't think 4th gen Ryzen can outperform their 3rd gen counterparts, let alone their 12th gen Intel competitors. They only make sense if you can't find a used Ryzen 3 3100/3300X wherever you live.

An important consideration is the fact 12400 has an iGPU, which is useful for troubleshooting; especially if we're still in the current GPU climate and your GPU dies, you're left with a non-working PC with AMD or Intel -F CPUs. It's a rare scenario but it's worth considering
Couldn't agree more, just bought i5 12400 recently and I would say the iGPU is pretty decent if only Im not a heavy worker, the iGPU only could definitely be a daily driver
Every xfx product I bought broke down after a couple years of use. Since 2012 I won't buy another xfx product. They take msi and gigabyte levels of cutting corners to the extreme with like zero customer support. If I ever had to buy a xfx gpu or board again I would personally put as best cooling as possible on it. Ever since my last experience with them in 2012 it seems there is all still the same complaints. Like the recent xfx China scandal of xfx selling used mining cards as new. Just avoid them. Evga, Asus, and corsair are the big quality control freaks who put out quality with great customer support.
As someone who went from a 1600 to a 5600x the 5600 non x seems to be a fantastic upgrade path for those on 1st and 2nd gen ryzen I'm just glad intel finally gave AMD a reason to release the budget options now let's hope both companies keep this trend up (imo would like intel to make their boards and cpus way less tedious and confusing to buy tho) because when they're trading blows like this and leap frogging each other we as the consumer wins
@@rob22rtt don't have exact numbers but BF2042 went from struggling to handle 35fps with a 3070 at 1440p to sitting around 100fps with the same settings depending the game the change while big isn't as night as day warzone was already pushing like 80fps with the 5600x it was around like 130fps before the bloat dragged down the numbers but for games where your gpu is being held back by the 1600 the 5600x was night and day
My policy is to buy 1 generation before the last, especially when it comes out and people start selling the previous generation, thanks to that I usually keep my equipment updated without paying the price of the latest model
In my region, AMD board are cheaper by a good margin. This make a huge difference when building low cost rig. Also, the included cooler with AMD CPU is a big advantage, it look good and perform well overall. I was choosing parts for a gaming computer the other days and it was a nightmare to find a cheap cooler for a 12600k, since the new socket require new mounting hardware.
Yep, I'm building my brother in law PC last January, and decided to go with Core i5 12400. The board price itself (it's lower end H610 board) is very expensive, but we choose it because it's more future proof. But I'm glad my own R5 2600 + B450 system still can be upgraded for the last time...

You can have Ryzen 5600 (boxed) for 110~$ and a good AsRock B550 Pro 4 is about 90~$ if one wants to make a relatively budget friendly upgrade. Thank you for your work sir!
7 months later, i built this for my brother, only difference is now with cheap good b650 and 7500f, Zen4 gets a budget option. The build difference is at about 50 bucks all in all.
I bought a brand new 5600x about a week after launch, local from Facebook. Came with a brand new case, a TUF gt501. 300 bucks for both. Still using today. Glad more will get to experience what this cpu can do for cheaper now
Just got myself to microcenter and bought a 5600 for $129. Upgrading from a 1600 ae. So from 1st generation Ryzen. I won't lie, the tech messed up and printed me outfor a 5600x and as I was walking to the checkout I was like hold on a second. With Intel and AMD so close together in the midrange now, I would be really interested in a price comparison of the platforms. Like are the mainboards also equally priced for the same feature set? Do AMD boards need more auxilliary controllers because their PCH isn't as decked out or are Intel's LGA sockets more expensive to put on boards and does that make a difference?
It's really not fair when if money is really an issue, you can get a used b450 board for a third of the price of an equivalent b660 board, or even a "new" b450 board for half the price. It's just the advantage of being on the same platform for half a decade.
@@williampaabreeves AMD is also moving to LGA for the next generation. You won't be able to drop a new CPU into a used board much longer, it'll be all used market parts. Now, a 5000 series Ryzen CPU isn't going to be slow any time soon, but that is worth noting as they have had AM4 around for so long.
@@DigitalJedi we wont start finding out how well stuff has lasted until 5-8 years after it came out. As you can still find shed loads of old Intel CPUs, but old motherboards are almost as expensive as low end new ones
Makes me happy that my R5 3600 is still a solid cpu. Not the best yes, but good enough for what i use my PC for. Also XFX stuff doesn’t work. That’s a fact
@@CarbonPanther I'd edit the question above me, WHERE is Steve salty about the 3600? Steve gave it an award for best value CPU back in the day. But the 5000 series kind of nailed it, so it is reasonable to acknowledge there is a solid potential in upgrading from 3600 to 5600(X).
The R5 5600 is currently on sale for $149 USD in my area, vs $199 for the x-sku. *Definitely* gonna jump on that today, so I can finally upgrade from my R5 2600 for less than I originally paid for it! This CPU may have come way later than it should have, but for me it'll be a worthwhile, in-socket upgrade. I can't wait. Even with my RX 580 (still haven't been able to upgrade my GPU), frame time consistency will be so much better.
@@celzolsen8988 the 5600? Impressive as hell. All of the R5s that aren't the "x-sku" have always been the best value imo. Holds up really well with my 3060ti now. I can play cp2077 at 1440p and it's beautiful. DLSS helps out too, though not really worth it with 1080p. All in all it's crazy to think of how far AMD has come, to where you can get a $150 (or even less currently) 6c/12t CPU with the single and multi-threaded capabilities it has. You gotta think, 5 years ago the R5 1600 wasn't even close to Intel in terms of IPC or clock speed, now it trades blows with the 12400 (Intel's best "budget" 6-core pre-Raptor Lake)
Just purchased one for only £126 to upgrade my ancient ryzen 1600 pc that i built in 2017 its crazy that a cpu that was technically released in 2022 is supported by my motherboard from 2017 I know original zen3 was 2020 though hopefully am5 will last aswell but I guess it will depend on if ddr6 releases sooner then they will have to change socket again
I'm still angrier at Intel over the years of "4 cores without hyperthreading is more than enough for everyone who isn't paying at least $500 for a CPU" so I waited to see if AMD would release a sub $300 part. The 5600X had dropped to $210 at microcenter so even before the announcement of the 5600 I was getting ready to upgrade. I bought the 5600 yesterday and am really pleased with it. It should carry me well into the DDR5 era when the platforms are mature and the RAM is more reasonably priced and available.
There is difference between them, isn't it? Like PBO overdrive and stuff... I am not sure about 5600 differences to 5600x in terms of limitations. Because 65W is 5600x PBO disabled, even stock PBO makes it work decently harder (which is 76W or 88W depends on mobo manufacturer and their guidline following, for Zen2 it was 88W for 65, for Zen3 officially 76W). So enabling PBO is easy step for performance. But while revievers work fair (same conditions for all), Intel removes PL1 and leaves their boosted power limit as main on 12 gen CPU-s
It's interesting to see that they both come with the same cooler, as the last gen it was widely considered that the X on the 3600 basically got you a better pack-in cooler and that was the reason for the slightly better clocks on the 3600X, not so much actual performance binning, and you could easily get the same performance with the 3600 by pairing it with a decent cheap cooler. It appears with the same pack in cooler in this generation, this is more apparent. I wonder if this maintains using the PBO, as this would better demonstrate higher clock/power tolerances, although it would have to be a bit greater than the 200Mhz difference, which would still make for very little difference in most titles.
A couple months ago, I think in September 2021 the 5600x was for sale for about 275 euros (in the Netherlands) wanted to buy it but found a better deal for a 5800x

If time permits, how does the 5600 overclock? Does it bring it up to the stock 5600X? Nice to see competition working again, and perhaps, some of the shortages going away.
Is it even worth upgrading from a 8700k to a 5600 at this point? Mines been running 5ghz for five years now with no issues and is still going strong. I want to upgrade before college so I’m not worried about components dying on a student budget but, at this point I don’t know…
@gamersnexus This video really needed to be summarized a little clearer, in my opinion. While you did talk about it, one thing that really needs to be stressed more is the purpose of the CPU purchase in regards to what is being upgraded? Just the CPU or is the consumer building a new machine? For instance, when you are talking about generational upgrades from the older AMD Ryzen CPUs like the 3600 to the 5600 vs the 12400 from an older Intel CPU, there is the added cost of a new motherboard. Performance doesn't weigh that in when comparing the 2. Someone using a Ryzen 5 3600 may not have to upgrade the B450 motherboard that they are currently using. Whereas, anyone upgrading to 12th Gen Intel would have to buy a LGA 1700 motherboard. So, even if the performance is within 13% of each other, the difference cost might be over $170 depending on which (not cheap) Intel board you use. So, the 12400's price point is only comparable to those who are building a whole new setup, not necessarily just upgrading the CPU...so basically, AMD all day long until AM5. That is just my frugal opinion.
I'm glaring at the 5600X for a while now to reach the 200€ mark, but heres hope that the 5600 non-X will start already below that. As I already have a built out B550 board with 32gig ram, but only a lowly R5 1600, this will be a nice boost. On a second note, since prices for gpus are finally dropping, would you mind give a comparison on available mid-range gpus? Its hard to tell which one is good and which not by pricetag alone. I know you did not ask me but, I'm aiming to get Rx 6600 XT when it hits msrp or below to pair with my 5600X, it is enough for gaming at 1080p with 75 or 90 fps. It also provides access to Amd FSR for games that are poorly optimized and it is a great GPU to undervolt and overclock for better performance, lower power consumption and thus lower heat generation. (It is easy to do that with Adrenaline, the AMD overclock software). Depends what you aim for in your computer, I want great performance for low power consumption and AMD delivers. The best one is the Asus RoG strix version dual fan but I'm keeping my eye on the MSI version to pair it with my motherboard (plus I had only good experiences with MSI). PS: Anything above 6600 XT has diminishing returns and you should get only if you want 4k gaming or you're loaded and can spend money on this. Also, if power consumption is not a problem and you don't want to get a GPU now, wait to see what's up with the 7000 series later this year. @@drygon9324 I recently had a very painful experience with MSI. Building a 10400 for the wife, with the cheapest stuff I could find at my local store. The motherboard had the WORST manual I have come across, the pin labels were nowhere near where they marked them on the manual. Being fairly novice at PC building (not my first time by any means) I followed the instructions. That led to what seemed to be a DOA board. I got onto MSI live chat, and explained that there were no lights on the board when powered up. The tech immediately said "sounds like a dead board" and suggested I return it. I took it to the store 45 minutes away, with everything else I had bought earlier that morning, and had the helpful fellow behind the counter test everything, and it was all in working order. Come to find out, in a most embarrassing way, that I had the front panel connected in the wrong spot, and there are no lights on that board whatsoever when powered up unless there is a problem, which would apparently light the little troubleshooting LEDs. Really great customer service on MSI's part...

But yeah, sounds like they should work more on their PR if they want to attract new customers at a faster rate. Usually I just look on their website (this stands for all companies that sell tech) as there I can find well organized info. Guess they are not into paper anymore lol. Still, it is not set in stone for me, Ideally, I'd like the Asus Rog version. It will depend on what I find when I'll search to buy.
@@drygon9324 They didn't even bother to give a paper manual for the board, it was only online. I don't really care what brand of PC parts I buy for the most part, for what I do the cheap stuff has always worked well for me. I won't be buying any more MSI stuff though, that left a bad taste in my mouth. It didn't help that when I called into the store and asked if they could test the stuff the guy told me if you buy an MSI board, get the extended warranty. It turned out fine in the end, stuffed it all back into the ancient E-machines case and she isn't bugging me about the slow computer any more. I tried to explain that 50 google chrome tabs and the filled to the brim storage were the main problems, but that wasn't a fight worth fighting for $600 (cdn) The A10 6800 was pretty long in the tooth anyway. It served me well when I was using it, and she got a good few years out of it too once I moved onto a slightly better system with an actual GPU. If it wasn't for the new gen of CPUs on the horizon I would have handed down my I5-4590, but I am not ready to part with it just yet.
On a x370 and was thinking about a 5700x upgrade. Now I'm rethinking that and holding out for a better video card and keep the R7 1700. So many components that just wanna suck the money out of your wallet is unreal these days.

Haven't had a proper gaming rig for a couple of years now, and had a decent case and PSU lying around, so thought I might try to build a pretty good rig for around 3-400$ in used parts. Planned to get the ol' and reliable 3600 for around 70-80$, but saw 5600 on sale for 150$ and got it after watching this. Such a great all-round CPU, that will be more than enough for most people for many years to come, imo. Great to see Intel getting competitive again as well.
As a b350 and r5 1600 owner, that makes me consider to potentially upgrade to 5500/5600 once there will be a mb bios available. I was thinking of getting an intel mb and cpu before, because there was no way to make 5xxx series work on my board
I went from a b550i with a r1600 to the 5600x. I was so surprised how much of an insane jump in performance it was. Actually, generally just every aspect of my pc feels better. Rip r1600 ;(
I started out with a B350 board and 1300X in 2017, then swapped in a 3600 in 2019 and the improvement was insane, because the 1300X couldn't keep up with the logic in certain games and was HEAVILY bottlenecking them, so it's been a different world with the 3600 as it checks all the minimum requirements for modern gaming. I'm not gonna get a 5600, cause the 20-30% improvement is only slightly noticeable and would require a faster gfx card as well, but FOR YOU, a jump from 1600 to 5600 would totally blow your mind, you can't imagine how much the 1600 is holding back ALL your hardware
If you're buildin a whole new system, it's a pretty close match with the 12400. Maybe a slight edge towards intel in terms of value. But damn, even my x370 crosshair 6 got s BIOS update. I ran a 1600 on that board, upgraded to a 3700x, and now i could slap a 5700x onto the same board i had since 2018? That's just amazing.
AMD for the longevity win... Don't know if they will keep this kinda thing going though - AMD is becoming pretty uppity and indifferent to the normie consumers these days lol The fact that they held out this long from selling a r5 5600 should tell ya

You guys have mentioned multiple times an older am4 platform upgrade with this new launch of AND CPUs. Could you do a video evaluating a couple of these scenarios? Let's say, "ryzen early adopter has an x370 motherboard with 3000MHz DDR4 with r5 1600x" "this is their performance boost if they simply drop in an r5 5600; Here's their performance if they replaced the ram as well". Rinse/repeat for the next common platform, a b450 with an r5 2700. What does a $200 cpu upgrade on a gen1 ryzen system get you? Is it really worth the trouble vs spending another $200 on motherboard+ram upgrade?
I just bought the 5600 and 16 more gigs of Trident Z RGB 3200 ram. Just waiting for the MSI 300 series bios update which they said should be by end of April 2022. Thinking i should see some decent gains especially with 32 gigs of ram now.
Gaming benchmarks are becoming funnier and funnier to me. All of those CPU's are almost indistinguishable from each other. It's all the same, just a straight vertical line
I really enjoy this channel. Anyone looking for clear information about new cpu compared by brands and recent generations is just in the right place. I made recent upgrade from 3rd gen i7 3770 to Ryzen 7 3700x... Lucky number. I did spend 200 on this used 8 core processor when the other intel or amd options were 400 us. Now if gaming is your primary goal that 5600 is the best but I still recommend 3700x if price is lower. I use passmark PT and userbenchmark and I am getting same percentage differences like Steve GN but watching this video is so terrific and enjoyable experience. Good work. For workstation sure the 3700x's extra cores will be better. But if your on a gaming system I'd definately recommend 5600x (or now this 5600) and/or i5 12400f instead. They are just much faster in single core and gaming performance.
Unless you're gaming at low resolutions and you want the highest possible FPS for a freesynch type monitor, you're better off just getting a GPU upgrade. Edit: my benches show its just about 8 - 10% off from a zen 2 R5 3600. So you will be rewarded if you spend some time tweaking ryzen 1000 and 2000 series.
you're underestimating how much zen+ is bottlenecking most gfx cards. a friend went from a 2600 to a 5600x on a b450 board and not only are all stutters and framedrops gone - even maximum fps are up
@@elu5ive did he overclock it? What RAM speed is he running? I have an overclocked Ryzen 2600 sitting at 4.2Ghz with cheap Hynix RAM overclocked to 3333 CL14 and i've never experienced any weirdness or framedrops - been pretty solid and great bang for buck for a $120 CPU.
@@scroopynooperz9051 no overclock, basic 2133mhz cl15 ram, his board doesn't have heatsinks on all mosfets and his cpu cooler is on the cheaper side. i know, doesn't look great. people tend to underestimate all the parts without performance numbers (which ironically add up to a huge difference in performance) in any case, I helped with the 5600x swap and it worked wonders, even in his system

I was super lucky and snagged a deal for a mobo + ram ($184) 32gb combo that had ddr5. Mobo was the same price as the ddr4 equivalent so it was, at least for me, a steal.
ddr5 price is like 3x of ddr4 here so I went with a ddr4 build when the 5800X dropped to $360. Gigabyte Aorus B550I r1.1 5800X 2x16GB DDR4-3200 CL16 with a free 500gb sata for my most played games :D
I just bought the 5600x coming from a 2600. The jump in performance was so huge, I was so happy with my purchase. Then, I watched this review, now i'm kinda regretting not doing a bit of research before making my purchase.
Part of me wonders what the landscape of CPU engineering could look like if Nvidia started designing CPUs. A three-way competition is already on the horizon in the sphere of graphics cards, so hey, what if... 👀 Then again, that's probably what they were thinking with their attempts to buy ARM, and we all know how that went. That gets me wondering if maybe we'll see some interesting desktop-grade innovations from ARM...
@@ok-jl7qo don't. no real reason to get 5800x3d. for gaming, get r5 5600 if you have am4 mobo. And from a 2600, seriously consider if you even need an upgrade and if you'd gain from it. if you have use of higher cores for something else, get 5700x or 5800x (for 320-350$). The extra cache of 5800x3d will not be of much benefit. Especially when it's overheating and has lower clocks.
It would be interesting to see a comparison with PBO and memory tweaking enabled. I got my 5600X two weeks ago 35 euro less than the 5600 launch price. I also got a B550 motherboard for just 53 euro. So for me AM4 gives better value than alder lake. The only reason I'd go with alder lake is the ability to upgrade to raptor lake later on.
I put clock offset +200MHz on my 5600X recently and it seems to run fine at 5.85GHz sustained on all cores. I'm not running blender or anything but it tops out at about 75W with the kind of loads I have. Pretty nice performance per watt!
it has practically never been worth it to do an upgrade between 2 consecutive generations. and the i7 or i9 wont lose enough value to make it worth it 3 years later either. you can always do it, but it's not the "flexible option" that it's made up to be when people mention that (more like a "i'm holding off with this weak CPU while i wait to save up for the next 6 months"). it's much more reasonable to buy now for now when you're buying in the mid~high tier. when it feels old new features will push you onto a new platform anyways rather than having a tiny bit more speed. (it was m.2 boot drive, then thunderbolt, then pcie 4.0, then direct access memory support in games... never stops)

You forgot to mention that I5-12400 has integrated GPU and the AMD one doesn't have. That's pretty significant for people like me that don't play games. And this probably affects power consumption of the CPU.

As a 3700x w/ B550 owner, this really helps give me some perspective as somebody who exclusively uses their computer for 1440p single player gaming. I've been thinking about upgrading, given the 5000 series price drops and the prospective 5800x3D. Seeing the very small performance uplift the newer generation offers, I think I'll pass and continue to see what AM5 has to offer. Thanks for all the work. I am loving the fact that basically the pricing is so constant versus performance that a non technical person could theoretically buy based on price and for the most part hit the same performance regardless of manufacturer
That is just CPU price not platform price. Intel boards tend to be rather more expensive nowadays.

As a 5600X user, I'd advise all zen 3 users to use PBO and undervolt your CPU. It's just a couple of changes in your BIOS and in my case the 5600x hits 4.6GHz constantly on full load, lower temperature and lower consumption. Makes me wonder why it's not it's default setting, given how good it is.

Back in December 2019 I bought the Ryzen 7 2700X for roughly $165, and I have just bought the Ryzen 5 5600 for the same price. Last realistic upgrade I'll do to this motherboard until I replace it in a few years, but I like how this AM4 architecture survived.
I've been running a 4690k since early 2016 and finally decided it was time for an upgrade so I picked up the 5600 on sale at 129.99 with a free copy of Uncharted legacy of theives collection which is worth 50 bucks.
After seeing these benchmarks I'm feeling like I got a great deal.
You did, I used to have a 4690k with gtx 960 4gb and upgraded to a 5600x and rx 6600 last year and it's been brilliant (about 3x the performance of my old rig)..... I've now just ordered two 5600 and two more rx 6600 to upgrade my kid's pc's for Christmas

Regarding in-socket upgrades; I was completely sure the Haswell i5 in my 2013 build would die with the system. I stretched my budget to get that i5 so the whole build would last me years, "until the next build". I'm now in year 9 of owning this system. I can't justify dropping the cash for a new system because I'm not a professional, my gaming has dwindled to a few minutes per week, and even so, my RX 570 still has a $200 street price. But I could justify $40 for an 4C/8T Xeon with boosted frequencies. The productivity and usability boost is noticeable and respectable considering the price I paid.
I guess the bottom line is, start with a chip that covers what you need it to do and don't overspend. Then if the need arises, upgrade.
Same situation here. I still have my i7-6700k from 7 years ago and I can't be any happier. Good CPU that gets the job done. I had to upgrade my GPU unfortunately to an RTX 2060S because of some software support issues I encountered (before the GPU shortage, fortunately), otherwise I would've kept my 1060 6GB. All tech RUclipsrs usually push the latest and greatest, that's their job, nothing wrong with that, but that puts pressure on the consumer. So yeah, upgrade only if you need.
I recommend waiting dro Cashback promo from MSI and Gigabyte and snatching a good b550 for 50€ in total.
Coupling that with a 5600, you will have a CPU that is 100% faster in games than i7 4770k.
Much smoother 1% lows in gameplay, i5 Haswell may become a stuttering mess in newer games nowadays.
So you may want to look at this last AM4 platform as it will be couple years before DDR5 will be as cheap as DDR4 and so it's your last opportunity to upgrade before EoL for AM4 and LGA1700.
@@puffybuffy1503 I don't see how I'll be playing many more games with a 12900K versus a 4770 considering the GPU will have to stay the same... I am NOT paying 600€ for a NVidia 60 class card. 250€, maybe, for the OC version, but in this market I'd get a 1060 at best.
@ getting the i7 back when everyone was saying "an i5 is good enough for gaming" explains your longevity and was a really good buy. I got the 4690k and replaced it in January with a 12600k as it was really struggling with newer games/general tasks.
I did consider buying a 4790k as a stopgap solution until a new system but when I saw the reviews of the 12600k my mind was made up!

I bought a 5600 for 132€. I currently have a 3600 but I simply couldn't resist to that price.
Quick story, recently I purchased the 5600x over the i5-12400f. The reason being that when I took a trip to microcenter, I found a 5600x for $198, $20 more expensive than the Intel counterpart. However, the B550 MB where cheaper and had better features when compared to B660 MB. In other words, check whether the combo of CPU+MB offers the best value. Not Saying you should always go for a 5600x, just that you should consider the other requirements of your build.

@@bgop346 That's my suggestion. The more expensive B660 available was more expensive and had less features (e.g a worst audio codec) than the b550 counterpart. It just turned out that it made sense in my case scenario. It may be different for someone else.
Not only are they expensive, it's hit or miss just going in a store and grabbing one. Really have to research up first. Heck if you're really tight on money, grab a B450 instead, sure you lose PCIE 4.0 but it shouldn't matter as long as your GPU uses the whole X16 slot

6:10, in this graph it would be really amazing to see the integral, effectively total cycles, plotted as at the bottom of the graph. Its really hard to make out just how much extra work is being done over the time, esp as one spikes and the other slides, and the integrals would show that really well.
IMO alderlakes biggest weakness is that their boards cost more likely due to having to add a pc-e 5.0 lane, as well as a beefier vrm requirement reletive to AMD. the cheapest board you can use without performance loss of some sort are like ~130 b660 boards, as most(if not all) boards under that have a measurable performance drop. AM4's budget motherboards on the other hand are much more plentiful and affordable.
100% agree, I like that Steve metioned that too in this video. And another complication with the LGA1700 boards would be, if there is anything more specific in needs, like a ITX board or even a ITX board with DDR4 from a specific vendor of which you prefer the bios ;D
I tried configuring a Intel ITX build with my stepdad, but he dislikes Gigabyte and ASUS so I had to choose a MSI board... there is no such thing as a ITX DDR4 MSI Board on that platform :D so we went with the 5800X instead.

You do know that the PCIE 5.0 is on the CPU? Plus, the VRM is more or less the same as 11th gen motherboard.

Even so, it's fine to get DDR5, in the long run, it's still going to work in future platform, not the other way around, even though it base clock meets JEDEC spec.
I find it difficult to find Skylake compatible memory, all are rated 2.4GHz, or is 2.133 GHz as based, but once XMP turned on, it boot loops, and there's no update because it's out of support.
I'm a fullstack dev, just wanted to give you a benchmark suggestion... I often need to install a bunch of npm packages for example to strat an angular project, or an express web service. It'd be interesting to measure the performance of the CPU doing those tasks because they can be time consuming (compiling, decompressing). Also building docker images could be a great indicator of the CPU performance. I know this is a gaming oriented channel, but I'm sure a lot of people do this kind of things on a daily basis.
You can disect how well a cpu will perform in everything else based on the overall gaming benchmarks. However, amd has always seemed to excel in raw compute over intel for power. You cant go weong with either, tbh. Id pick amd though.
Same here, I'd want to see more production task metrics. Run some numpy array calculations for example, easy enough to do, just a couple of line of code.

Basically the difference is probably just binned chips right? So it took them long enough to have enough 5600x's that were just outside the bounds. Most of them are above it tho and could be overclocked (not that it gains that much)

i have a 5600X o/c'd to 4.75ghz on air and some corsair ddr4 3600mhz lpx ram o/c'd to 3866mhz and in 3dmark compared to stock it's a 23% uplift in score for me. tell me that is not huge (granted it's mostly the ram that is responsible).

Me too. I did a couple of Ryzen 3100 builds for people in 2020 when those chips first came out. Four modern Zen 2 cores with SMT in budget systems was a godsend and I'm quite miffed that AMD decided to drop that segment like a hot potato for Zen 3. If Intel didn't step in, AM4 would've been sent to the graveyard with the 5600G being the most "affordable" SKU for that generation.....
Judging by their specs I don't think 4th gen Ryzen can outperform their 3rd gen counterparts, let alone their 12th gen Intel competitors. They only make sense if you can't find a used Ryzen 3 3100/3300X wherever you live.

An important consideration is the fact 12400 has an iGPU, which is useful for troubleshooting; especially if we're still in the current GPU climate and your GPU dies, you're left with a non-working PC with AMD or Intel -F CPUs. It's a rare scenario but it's worth considering
Couldn't agree more, just bought i5 12400 recently and I would say the iGPU is pretty decent if only Im not a heavy worker, the iGPU only could definitely be a daily driver

Pretty much sums up my experience with XFX stuff.
Every xfx product I bought broke down after a couple years of use. Since 2012 I won't buy another xfx product. They take msi and gigabyte levels of cutting corners to the extreme with like zero customer support. If I ever had to buy a xfx gpu or board again I would personally put as best cooling as possible on it. Ever since my last experience with them in 2012 it seems there is all still the same complaints. Like the recent xfx China scandal of xfx selling used mining cards as new. Just avoid them. Evga, Asus, and corsair are the big quality control freaks who put out quality with great customer support.

As someone who went from a 1600 to a 5600x the 5600 non x seems to be a fantastic upgrade path for those on 1st and 2nd gen ryzen I'm just glad intel finally gave AMD a reason to release the budget options now let's hope both companies keep this trend up (imo would like intel to make their boards and cpus way less tedious and confusing to buy tho) because when they're trading blows like this and leap frogging each other we as the consumer wins
@@rob22rtt don't have exact numbers but BF2042 went from struggling to handle 35fps with a 3070 at 1440p to sitting around 100fps with the same settings depending the game the change while big isn't as night as day warzone was already pushing like 80fps with the 5600x it was around like 130fps before the bloat dragged down the numbers but for games where your gpu is being held back by the 1600 the 5600x was night and day
My policy is to buy 1 generation before the last, especially when it comes out and people start selling the previous generation, thanks to that I usually keep my equipment updated without paying the price of the latest model

In my region, AMD board are cheaper by a good margin. This make a huge difference when building low cost rig. Also, the included cooler with AMD CPU is a big advantage, it look good and perform well overall. I was choosing parts for a gaming computer the other days and it was a nightmare to find a cheap cooler for a 12600k, since the new socket require new mounting hardware.

I bought a brand new 5600x about a week after launch, local from Facebook. Came with a brand new case, a TUF gt501. 300 bucks for both. Still using today. Glad more will get to experience what this cpu can do for cheaper now

With Intel and AMD so close together in the midrange now, I would be really interested in a price comparison of the platforms. Like are the mainboards also equally priced for the same feature set? Do AMD boards need more auxilliary controllers because their PCH isn't as decked out or are Intel's LGA sockets more expensive to put on boards and does that make a difference?
It's really not fair when if money is really an issue, you can get a used b450 board for a third of the price of an equivalent b660 board, or even a "new" b450 board for half the price. It's just the advantage of being on the same platform for half a decade.
in the future I expect second hand intel boards to cost a lot more due to LGA sockets being prone to breaking while AMDs PGA sockets will survive

Now, a 5000 series Ryzen CPU isn't going to be slow any time soon, but that is worth noting as they have had AM4 around for so long.

@@CarbonPanther I'd edit the question above me, WHERE is Steve salty about the 3600? Steve gave it an award for best value CPU back in the day. But the 5000 series kind of nailed it, so it is reasonable to acknowledge there is a solid potential in upgrading from 3600 to 5600(X).
The R5 5600 is currently on sale for $149 USD in my area, vs $199 for the x-sku. *Definitely* gonna jump on that today, so I can finally upgrade from my R5 2600 for less than I originally paid for it! This CPU may have come way later than it should have, but for me it'll be a worthwhile, in-socket upgrade. I can't wait. Even with my RX 580 (still haven't been able to upgrade my GPU), frame time consistency will be so much better.

@@celzolsen8988 the 5600? Impressive as hell. All of the R5s that aren't the "x-sku" have always been the best value imo. Holds up really well with my 3060ti now. I can play cp2077 at 1440p and it's beautiful. DLSS helps out too, though not really worth it with 1080p. All in all it's crazy to think of how far AMD has come, to where you can get a $150 (or even less currently) 6c/12t CPU with the single and multi-threaded capabilities it has. You gotta think, 5 years ago the R5 1600 wasn't even close to Intel in terms of IPC or clock speed, now it trades blows with the 12400 (Intel's best "budget" 6-core pre-Raptor Lake)

Just purchased one for only £126 to upgrade my ancient ryzen 1600 pc that i built in 2017 its crazy that a cpu that was technically released in 2022 is supported by my motherboard from 2017 I know original zen3 was 2020 though hopefully am5 will last aswell but I guess it will depend on if ddr6 releases sooner then they will have to change socket again

I'm still angrier at Intel over the years of "4 cores without hyperthreading is more than enough for everyone who isn't paying at least $500 for a CPU" so I waited to see if AMD would release a sub $300 part. The 5600X had dropped to $210 at microcenter so even before the announcement of the 5600 I was getting ready to upgrade. I bought the 5600 yesterday and am really pleased with it. It should carry me well into the DDR5 era when the platforms are mature and the RAM is more reasonably priced and available.
So basically, you get a 1-1.5% performance loss for a 10-15% price reduction when buying a 5600 compared to the 5600X. I'd say that is a good deal.

I am not sure about 5600 differences to 5600x in terms of limitations.
Because 65W is 5600x PBO disabled, even stock PBO makes it work decently harder (which is 76W or 88W depends on mobo manufacturer and their guidline following, for Zen2 it was 88W for 65, for Zen3 officially 76W).
So enabling PBO is easy step for performance. But while revievers work fair (same conditions for all), Intel removes PL1 and leaves their boosted power limit as main on 12 gen CPU-s

Steve, not only did you talk me out of the 5800x for the 5600x today, but you've talked me down again to the 5600...
It's interesting to see that they both come with the same cooler, as the last gen it was widely considered that the X on the 3600 basically got you a better pack-in cooler and that was the reason for the slightly better clocks on the 3600X, not so much actual performance binning, and you could easily get the same performance with the 3600 by pairing it with a decent cheap cooler. It appears with the same pack in cooler in this generation, this is more apparent. I wonder if this maintains using the PBO, as this would better demonstrate higher clock/power tolerances, although it would have to be a bit greater than the 200Mhz difference, which would still make for very little difference in most titles.
A couple months ago, I think in September 2021 the 5600x was for sale for about 275 euros (in the Netherlands) wanted to buy it but found a better deal for a 5800x

@gamersnexus This video really needed to be summarized a little clearer, in my opinion. While you did talk about it, one thing that really needs to be stressed more is the purpose of the CPU purchase in regards to what is being upgraded? Just the CPU or is the consumer building a new machine? For instance, when you are talking about generational upgrades from the older AMD Ryzen CPUs like the 3600 to the 5600 vs the 12400 from an older Intel CPU, there is the added cost of a new motherboard. Performance doesn't weigh that in when comparing the 2. Someone using a Ryzen 5 3600 may not have to upgrade the B450 motherboard that they are currently using. Whereas, anyone upgrading to 12th Gen Intel would have to buy a LGA 1700 motherboard. So, even if the performance is within 13% of each other, the difference cost might be over $170 depending on which (not cheap) Intel board you use. So, the 12400's price point is only comparable to those who are building a whole new setup, not necessarily just upgrading the CPU...so basically, AMD all day long until AM5. That is just my frugal opinion.
Same with any comparsion of 12th gen vs 5000 series cpus. Work out cost-performance for the entire upgrade not just the cpu in isolation.

I'm glaring at the 5600X for a while now to reach the 200€ mark, but heres hope that the 5600 non-X will start already below that. As I already have a built out B550 board with 32gig ram, but only a lowly R5 1600, this will be a nice boost.
On a second note, since prices for gpus are finally dropping, would you mind give a comparison on available mid-range gpus? Its hard to tell which one is good and which not by pricetag alone. Bought some coasters aswell, cheers!

I know you did not ask me but, I'm aiming to get Rx 6600 XT when it hits msrp or below to pair with my 5600X, it is enough for gaming at 1080p with 75 or 90 fps. It also provides access to Amd FSR for games that are poorly optimized and it is a great GPU to undervolt and overclock for better performance, lower power consumption and thus lower heat generation. (It is easy to do that with Adrenaline, the AMD overclock software). Depends what you aim for in your computer, I want great performance for low power consumption and AMD delivers. The best one is the Asus RoG strix version dual fan but I'm keeping my eye on the MSI version to pair it with my motherboard (plus I had only good experiences with MSI).
PS: Anything above 6600 XT has diminishing returns and you should get only if you want 4k gaming or you're loaded and can spend money on this. Also, if power consumption is not a problem and you don't want to get a GPU now, wait to see what's up with the 7000 series later this year.

@@drygon9324 I recently had a very painful experience with MSI. Building a 10400 for the wife, with the cheapest stuff I could find at my local store. The motherboard had the WORST manual I have come across, the pin labels were nowhere near where they marked them on the manual. Being fairly novice at PC building (not my first time by any means) I followed the instructions. That led to what seemed to be a DOA board. I got onto MSI live chat, and explained that there were no lights on the board when powered up. The tech immediately said "sounds like a dead board" and suggested I return it. I took it to the store 45 minutes away, with everything else I had bought earlier that morning, and had the helpful fellow behind the counter test everything, and it was all in working order. Come to find out, in a most embarrassing way, that I had the front panel connected in the wrong spot, and there are no lights on that board whatsoever when powered up unless there is a problem, which would apparently light the little troubleshooting LEDs. Really great customer service on MSI's part...

I don't really care what brand of PC parts I buy for the most part, for what I do the cheap stuff has always worked well for me. I won't be buying any more MSI stuff though, that left a bad taste in my mouth. It didn't help that when I called into the store and asked if they could test the stuff the guy told me if you buy an MSI board, get the extended warranty.
It turned out fine in the end, stuffed it all back into the ancient E-machines case and she isn't bugging me about the slow computer any more. I tried to explain that 50 google chrome tabs and the filled to the brim storage were the main problems, but that wasn't a fight worth fighting for $600 (cdn) The A10 6800 was pretty long in the tooth anyway. It served me well when I was using it, and she got a good few years out of it too once I moved onto a slightly better system with an actual GPU. If it wasn't for the new gen of CPUs on the horizon I would have handed down my I5-4590, but I am not ready to part with it just yet.
On a x370 and was thinking about a 5700x upgrade. Now I'm rethinking that and holding out for a better video card and keep the R7 1700. So many components that just wanna suck the money out of your wallet is unreal these days.
You'd be better off getting a cpu upgrade first, any new video card will be held back by your 1700
Do the 5600 and save the cash. Upgrade big later when prices drop.

Haven't had a proper gaming rig for a couple of years now, and had a decent case and PSU lying around, so thought I might try to build a pretty good rig for around 3-400$ in used parts. Planned to get the ol' and reliable 3600 for around 70-80$, but saw 5600 on sale for 150$ and got it after watching this. Such a great all-round CPU, that will be more than enough for most people for many years to come, imo.

As a b350 and r5 1600 owner, that makes me consider to potentially upgrade to 5500/5600 once there will be a mb bios available. I was thinking of getting an intel mb and cpu before, because there was no way to make 5xxx series work on my board
I went from a b550i with a r1600 to the 5600x. I was so surprised how much of an insane jump in performance it was. Actually, generally just every aspect of my pc feels better.

I started out with a B350 board and 1300X in 2017, then swapped in a 3600 in 2019 and the improvement was insane, because the 1300X couldn't keep up with the logic in certain games and was HEAVILY bottlenecking them, so it's been a different world with the 3600 as it checks all the minimum requirements for modern gaming.
I'm not gonna get a 5600, cause the 20-30% improvement is only slightly noticeable and would require a faster gfx card as well,
but FOR YOU, a jump from 1600 to 5600 would totally blow your mind, you can't imagine how much the 1600 is holding back ALL your hardware

If you're buildin a whole new system, it's a pretty close match with the 12400. Maybe a slight edge towards intel in terms of value. But damn, even my x370 crosshair 6 got s BIOS update. I ran a 1600 on that board, upgraded to a 3700x, and now i could slap a 5700x onto the same board i had since 2018? That's just amazing.
I was quite happy to read that my Asus B350 got the update. Now I am probably going to upgrade from a 1700.

Built a 5600X gaming PC for my nephew about 5 months ago (Xmas). $260 for the CPU. Not sad about this at all, at least it's got the X.
What I find impressive is the 12th Gen i3 running better then the 3600. That’s astonishing.
Would have been more excited if the 5600 and 5700X launched within the first 6 month of the Zen 3 release.

You guys have mentioned multiple times an older am4 platform upgrade with this new launch of AND CPUs. Could you do a video evaluating a couple of these scenarios?
Let's say, "ryzen early adopter has an x370 motherboard with 3000MHz DDR4 with r5 1600x" "this is their performance boost if they simply drop in an r5 5600; Here's their performance if they replaced the ram as well". Rinse/repeat for the next common platform, a b450 with an r5 2700.
What does a $200 cpu upgrade on a gen1 ryzen system get you? Is it really worth the trouble vs spending another $200 on motherboard+ram upgrade?
I just bought the 5600 and 16 more gigs of Trident Z RGB 3200 ram. Just waiting for the MSI 300 series bios update which they said should be by end of April 2022. Thinking i should see some decent gains especially with 32 gigs of ram now.

Gaming benchmarks are becoming funnier and funnier to me. All of those CPU's are almost indistinguishable from each other. It's all the same, just a straight vertical line

I really enjoy this channel. Anyone looking for clear information about new cpu compared by brands and recent generations is just in the right place. I made recent upgrade from 3rd gen i7 3770 to Ryzen 7 3700x... Lucky number. I did spend 200 on this used 8 core processor when the other intel or amd options were 400 us. Now if gaming is your primary goal that 5600 is the best but I still recommend 3700x if price is lower. I use passmark PT and userbenchmark and I am getting same percentage differences like Steve GN but watching this video is so terrific and enjoyable experience. Good work. Can you review those benchmarking platforms? Thank you
For workstation sure the 3700x's extra cores will be better. But if your on a gaming system I'd definately recommend 5600x (or now this 5600) and/or i5 12400f instead. They are just much faster in single core and gaming performance.
As someone with a 2600X, the 5600 seems great, but dang could I use a GPU upgrade so much more.
Unless you're gaming at low resolutions and you want the highest possible FPS for a freesynch type monitor, you're better off just getting a GPU upgrade.
Edit: my benches show its just about 8 - 10% off from a zen 2 R5 3600.
So you will be rewarded if you spend some time tweaking ryzen 1000 and 2000 series.
you're underestimating how much zen+ is bottlenecking most gfx cards. a friend went from a 2600 to a 5600x on a b450 board and not only are all stutters and framedrops gone - even maximum fps are up

I have an overclocked Ryzen 2600 sitting at 4.2Ghz with cheap Hynix RAM overclocked to 3333 CL14 and i've never experienced any weirdness or framedrops - been pretty solid and great bang for buck for a $120 CPU.

his board doesn't have heatsinks on all mosfets and his cpu cooler is on the cheaper side.
i know, doesn't look great. people tend to underestimate all the parts without performance numbers (which ironically add up to a huge difference in performance)
in any case, I helped with the 5600x swap and it worked wonders, even in his system

I was super lucky and snagged a deal for a mobo + ram ($184) 32gb combo that had ddr5. Mobo was the same price as the ddr4 equivalent so it was, at least for me, a steal.
ddr5 price is like 3x of ddr4 here so I went with a ddr4 build when the 5800X dropped to $360.

I just bought the 5600x coming from a 2600. The jump in performance was so huge, I was so happy with my purchase. Then, I watched this review, now i'm kinda regretting not doing a bit of research before making my purchase.

for gaming, get r5 5600 if you have am4 mobo. And from a 2600, seriously consider if you even need an upgrade and if you'd gain from it.
if you have use of higher cores for something else, get 5700x or 5800x (for 320-350$). The extra cache of 5800x3d will not be of much benefit. Especially when it's overheating and has lower clocks.

You should start bench Da Vinci Resolve, since a lot of content creators use it, and it crash less than Première ^^
It would be interesting to see a comparison with PBO and memory tweaking enabled. I got my 5600X two weeks ago 35 euro less than the 5600 launch price. I also got a B550 motherboard for just 53 euro. So for me AM4 gives better value than alder lake. The only reason I'd go with alder lake is the ability to upgrade to raptor lake later on.
I put clock offset +200MHz on my 5600X recently and it seems to run fine at 5.85GHz sustained on all cores. I'm not running blender or anything but it tops out at about 75W with the kind of loads I have. Pretty nice performance per watt!
it has practically never been worth it to do an upgrade between 2 consecutive generations. and the i7 or i9 wont lose enough value to make it worth it 3 years later either.
you can always do it, but it's not the "flexible option" that it's made up to be when people mention that (more like a "i'm holding off with this weak CPU while i wait to save up for the next 6 months").
it's much more reasonable to buy now for now when you're buying in the mid~high tier. when it feels old new features will push you onto a new platform anyways rather than having a tiny bit more speed. (it was m.2 boot drive, then thunderbolt, then pcie 4.0, then direct access memory support in games... never stops)
