I can thank Rob Zombie for introducing me to this amazing song writer including this and Brave awakening, and to be treated right in his film The Devils Rejects. I had the honor to see Terry do all three live in 2005.
I was there at the Bottom Line that night. This is very strange - Just looking for Terry Reid on RUclips, and up this popped - nearly 40 years later. My blood froze for a second. I was on my first trip away from London, courtesy of Freddie Laker's "Skytrain". Walking around Greenwich Village and there it was on Fourth Street. - The Bottom Line! I'd read all these reviews in Melody Maker / New Musical Express / Sounds of great bands and gigs there. The lovely people we were with said "No problem - We can book tickets for Saturday night". So we did. Strangely again, my memory of that night was that I loved the club, the company, and the mind blowing fact that I was actually in New York, but I wasn't really impressed with Terry Reid. I'd seen him at the Roundhouse here in London a few months previously, and again, I didn't really get it! But this recording (and I've listened to it so many times over the last few years) just knocks me out every time. And then I went to see him at the Jazz Cafe in Camden. Just brilliant. Great voice, really good band. How come I didn't figure it all out before. Sorry, I'm wandering (something that Terry admits to, but is in fact part of his talent!) but I can only recommend anyone reading this to get out and see him next time he's anywhere near you. He's a great raconteur too - what more d'you want !
+Fincar If I could pick only one place to go back in time, it would be July 23, 1976 to the Bottom Line in NYC listening to Terry Reid perform all his new songs from Seed of Memory. Hah ha, I would have been 13. I discovered him only recently and fell in love with his music so when he posted shows in NYC this year, had to traveled 5 hours to see him perform April, 2015 at the Turning Point at Piermont on the Hudson. Unforgettable night. Hope he comes back to the east coast of the US again soon.
Terry and I became good friends around 7 years ago out families keep in regular contact and he's still gigging regularly. I'm just glad he still has his health and his beautiful wife Annette. Amazing people. Terry lived a life and wrote the best songs music ever had the pleasure to grace itself with
Its a great experience when he plays norwich - i'm standing there chatting to him with friends - asking about the plane he's restoring at duxford and how the tours going - and in the back of my mind i'm like......fcuk! you opened glastonbury faye - you played iow 70' - you toured with the rolling stones! its a fantastic thing to be thinking about!
the reason why Terry is one of a kind is no one would be able to pull this off like him. ....i just saw this live on friday in New York.....even now its one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. I rarely know how to verbalize the word "beautiful" but if anyone asks me i would tell them to buy a ticket...draw a chair..sit, be still and quiet and listen to a this man perform this song.
very true! i'm gonna listen to the slower stuff on that today - yes your right power is there - register is defferent! funny you mention the smoking - I've stood outside talking to Terry on 2 occasions when he's gigged at norwich playhouse uk - and he really does go through the ciggies!!! at least 5 in an hour!
The guitar player is Doug Rodrigues, who played on Rogue Waves. I think the rhythm section is Soko Richardson and Lee Miles. 4 track set, that's on an old cassette somewhere. Saw him at the end of September with 50 ish others in Portsmouth. As always a mix of stunning and just good. Next evening he spoke at an exhibition of photographs about the Rolling Stones at Portsmouth Guildhall. Very entertaining! If you get the chance get to see him take the chance. You won't regret it!
MAN..., why have I just discovered this song after watching Devil's Rejects? I was a Rockin', Funk-i-tear all thru the 70's. How could I have missed this guy Terri Reid. I must have had my head up my ass. SHIT! Did he get radio play back in the day? PEACE
I wonder why he did this song in a higher key (Eb) ? Clearly his range can't be tested cause he still does this song justice live. Great song though Terry in any key.
I do like this 9 mins!!! - after listening to these properly - (i just had them stored last time round) - I'm quite suprised Terry had lost some of his voice range by 76 - Makes me appreciate his voice more in present day recordings i guess - its like in 6 years - power had dissappeared but his expression just over takes me! every time!
Terry was in great form @ the studio on april 6, 2009. He had the audience in his hand and gave them his heart. I 'm hoping someone has a video of TERRY REID @ THE STUDIO NYC, 4/6/09... the band was a special one: Ed Rainey from the Cosmic American Derelicts Band on guitar/ slide Tony Cimorosi NS upright bass Tony Beard Drums Benny Harris Keys Terry and the band had a great connection ... Hope to see some on RUclips soon.
I think this is one of his best songs and of course, the vocals are stellar...To me, his phrasing is very similar to Aretha. Actually, it would've been great to hear her take on Seed of Memory...
Yep. Terry was willing to try if jimmy waited after the stones tour but jimmy wanted a band then and now. Hence terry recommended plant and bonham and got on with his own life. He neither accepted or turned it down it was all timing im glad terry didnt join though wouldnt have worked at all jimmys although talent filled but completely reckless opiate drug fuelled behaviour and arrogance wouldnt have been tolerated by terry I dont think. Terrys a strong decent character himself and knows exactly what he wants from music. Just listen to his River album. Thats done HIS way. its a complete beautiful master piece
where does this bootleg come from? does anyone have a link from where it comes from? (i.e. where can i get a better copy of it?) in better Audio - not much stuff around from the seed of memory era live wise.
To the commentor bgnh1 below: your own comment is a gem unto itself! Those type of details and opinions raise the hair on your arm, and I agree about Richie Haven's "Parable of Ramon". Hauntingly beautiful in it's own right!!! (yes including the baby that cries on cue).
Just saw this post-I do have this show from the Bottom line. Just thought I'd let ya know, If you still need it-let me know,I'll get it over to you somehow..
Hmmm... not so sure he lost that much. No change really in the album versions of 1976. And I just listened to 5th of July - from the Driver album, recorded in 1991, the power is all there all right... may have dropped the pitch though, singing in a lower register than in his teen years, which is kind of normal. Remember also, he smokes like a chimney, always did...
It's nothing special, it's played during the credits. While it's a great movie and a great song I don't know why people love that it's played at the very end?
I think this is one of the best rock and roll anthems of all time...and sadly remained largely unknown.
I agree
I can thank Rob Zombie for introducing me to this amazing song writer including this and Brave awakening, and to be treated right in his film The Devils Rejects. I had the honor to see Terry do all three live in 2005.
Terry is a good friend of mine. Waltzed through life oblivious that he wrote the best song that ever was released. God bless him
It somehow took me 52 years to discover Terry Reid. Now it is all I ever listen to.
One of the greatest singers to ever grace the planet. Aretha thought so, too ❤
the day i get tired of this song will be the day i die. awesome
Lead guitar player is on fire. That was the improvised solo of his life.

ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS OF ALL TIME!!!
GREAT POETRY AND GREAT MUSIC!
Terry Reid is a genius!
Greetings from Germany
Michael Hontheim
An immortal and haunting classic.
Thanks Terry.
Don’t ever take this down! I need to somehow transfer this so I can always listen to this version
Just amazing . . . The great Terry Reid.
Only managed to catch him in 2007,2008 - I'd give any of my limbs to have seen him in the early 70's!
So good thanks Terry
Was lucky to see and meet him at a show, lovely man and great performance!
the reason why Terry is one of a kind is no one would be able to pull this off like him. ....i just saw this live on friday in New York.....even now its one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. 49 yrs to find this song just amazing and beautiful.
Everybody goes underrated singer. Great fecking guitarist too man.

Staggeringly good!
the day i get tired of this will be the day i die. awesome
Dude, I've been listening it for about a year, every single night. And it will go on till eternity.
Amazing...gives me chills every time!
great artist, not considered for what he gave to rock music...great song!! thanks!!
This is fucking gold.
Justin, great post. one of my favourite songs ever. lovely to have a raw recording of this show. thanks
great song still i love it
There were so many talents in the seventies, that it was possible that Terry stayed
a rather anonymous artist.
So you've seen him. Lucky duck. I can only hope. Never mind chatting... just to be present at a gig. *sigh*
very true! i'm gonna listen to the slower stuff on that today - yes your right power is there - register is defferent! funny you mention the smoking - I've stood outside talking to Terry on 2 occasions when he's gigged at norwich playhouse uk - and he really does go through the ciggies!!! at least 5 in an hour!
i wish i had it in better quality - glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for sharing this w/ us!!! Incredible!!
sound 4 the upload 1 of me fav tracks ever!!great 2 hear a gud quality live version

raw rock at its best
I was a bouncer at the Bottom Line many years ago. After Terry's time to be sure but a great venue is missed none the less.
MAN..., why have I just discovered this song after watching Devil's Rejects? I was a Rockin', Funk-i-tear all thru the 70's. How could I have missed this guy Terri Reid. I must have had my head up my ass. SHIT!

PEACE
Thanks for the info.
If I ever get any more info on this gig - I'll post it - I would also like to know the line up - espec the backing vocalists!
Glad you enjoyed - Justin

Yay! Nice upload, thanks!
this version sounds kinda Crazy Horse. Reminds me of "Danger Bird".... brilliant song though! Love Terry, what a talent.
o yes

Best version hands down to china town
I have to agree with you about placement of this song. In fact, all Terry's song placement in the movie was perfect, imo.

epic
Anyone know the lead guitarist? Such an incredible touch and feel.
I think this is one of his best songs and of course, the vocals are stellar...To me, his phrasing is very similar to Aretha. Actually, it would've been great to hear her take on Seed of Memory...
same with me
Who's ever playing lead guitar is a beast! I don't think it's Terry but don't know for sure
Scott Hamilton I would guess not. He's probably on acoustic. But I agree--definitely a beast.
Anyone happen to have this in mp3 form? (fingers crossed)
Is this the guy Jimmy Page wanted to be Zep's singer? Then who recommended Robert Plant to Jimmy?
yup :)
He did himself.
Yep. Terry was willing to try if jimmy waited after the stones tour but jimmy wanted a band then and now. Hence terry recommended plant and bonham and got on with his own life. Is there any way to get a copy of this? This is my favorite version of Seed of Memory.......Any info would be appreciated.

I think Neil Young’s ‘heart of Gold’ borrowed just a bit from Terry’s song
anyone have a link to this set for download?
@BluesRaves Have you see the movie yet?

no one said that man... haha
man i love this guy... but does this sound like "Dangerbird" to anyone??
One of greatest underrated songs ever written.... Reid should of been as popular as Zeppelin and others and in my opinion..... Was better
It's nothing special, it's played during the credits. While it's a great movie and a great song I don't know why people love that it's played at the very end?
