Hi thank you! Iron-on material is used for placing decals on surfaces, such as T-shirts, using an iron or heat press. You would cut most iron on material backward, or mirrored. Vinyl, or adhesive vinyl, would be used for car decals or wall decals, mug decals, etc. You can get it in removable or permanent but it is placed directly on the surface either by just sticking it on or by using transfer tape to transfer the whole decal to a surface. Hope that helps!
Thanks for sharing. I bought my Cricut Maker last year as an upgrade to my Cricut Explore Air. I am now retired so planning some projects for the cricut maker. Your video is very helpful. I am trying to decide if I should buy a Cricut machine. I don't plan to sell anything because I am just a beginner and a casual crafter. I love what it can do and I think I would enjoy using it. I does seem a bit expensive to use with all the materials and tools needed. If you are just doing seasonal crafts and home decor for friends and family, do you think it would be worth it?
Hi! The thing I love most about having the Cricut is being able to make whatever pops into my head. If you like to make purely for the joy then you will enjoy a cutter. I love to make things even if they might be easier to buy lol. I have gotten comments from those who sold theirs because they got frustrated with it and I will say it is a learning experience, but I have had mine for three years and couldn’t imagine not having one. It is a lot especially for the Maker, I think Explore Air 2 is less. But if you love your hobby and keep learning with it, it will be worth it. Hope that helps a bit!
Btw, if you want more precision out of your Cricut cutting machine I offer a mod package for the Explore Air 2 for the CNC head and an upgraded blade housing for the explore and maker series that reduces slop on the machine from .040" down to .004" for really accurate cuts.

I just got my Cricut and I am still trying to learn everything! What website do you use for everything? Would it be easier/better for me to use an ipad or a computer compared to my phone? This video was very helpful for a lot of things!
Hi congrats on your Cricut! I use Cricut Design Space for cutting with the machine. I like computer the best because it has more designing options. If you are using a pre-made design the phone is fine though. 🙂
@@AppalachianHomeCo thank you so much for your reply! If I am wanting to do a design that is not on design space, I would have to download like an svg and print it out correct? Please let me know if you have a video on this, and I will watch it. Thank you so much 😊
To clarify - when you are selling the decal - you are sending the vinyl decal along with a piece of transfer tape for them to do that part themselves onto their desired surface?
Hands down The Best video on RUclips about this subject. Ap thankful I found this in my feed. God bless. Love your Etsy btw. 👍 Where can I get the stick figure families to print? I can't find them.
Hi! I do allow customers to request temp vinyl for car decals but I mainly use permanent vinyl. For wall decals though and for decals you would place on furniture or mirrors in the home I use temporary vinyl. Hope that helps!
If you are doing signs I would go with 651. The 631 is great and I use it a lot and it’s super easy to remove from paint, walls, glass etc. The permanent is harder to remove than 631 so only use it if planning on keeping it a while. If you sell decals I would give both options to the customer. Hope that helps!
Hi I use premium vinyl for most adhesive vinyl. I knock up the pressure to more when the blade gets duller. I also use the premium vinyl- pearl setting a lot. It works on the cricut glossy outdoor vinyl better.
hi! my sister and i have just ordered the explore air 2 to make some decals and stickers with! could you explain what the purpose of the transfer tape is please? we aren't sure what it does :) thanks!
Of course! Transfer tape is applied over the decal after removing all the parts you don’t want to keep. The tape keeps all the parts in tact when you remove the backing when you get ready to apply a decal. Once the decal is placed on the surface you can remove the transfer by rolling and pulling it off the decal. It really just is a means of transferring the entire decal while keeping everything in place if that makes sense?☺️ Hope that helps!
Hi! It all depends on the material cost for me. I add up the cost of materials including transfer tape, vinyl, and packaging and triple that. So if i make a 6x6 decal and vinyl costs $1.00 per foot, transfer cost the same, and packaging costs say 50 cents then I have about $1.00 in a decal material cost. I would make the price no less than $3, and probably more like $4-$5 depending on how complex the image is. But that’s just me and where I start when pricing stuff! Hope that helps!!
Hello I have the Cricut joy and it’s great. But I just ordered the Cricut air 2 and I had a question when you make car decals do people have trouble peeling back the transfer tape from the paper? Because I made a decal for a friend and he had trouble peeling back the paper
Hi! Yes that happens it really depends on the combination of transfer tape and vinyl, and also how intricate your design is. I use medium tack transfer tape and sometimes I have problems with the backing but if I opt for strong grip it does better with the backing, but wants to pull off the vinyl when trying to apply a decal on paint. I would try strong grip if you are applying decals to glass or smooth metal, and stick with medium tack if you are making decals for signs and things. Hope that helps!
My husband wants me to make labels for his tool boxes(metal) and some wooden boxes. Whats the smallest lettering can I make? Also can I make more than 1 word at a time ,like wrenches, screwdrivers and such or is it 1 label at a time? Thank you
Hi! For things like window decals and decorative decals I use temporary personally. I wouldn’t use permanent for decorative decals I would want to remove later on my own personal car. But for more permanent decals, like trailer numbers, racing stripes, or things that will probably stay for a long time I’d use permanent. If selling online I go with permanent (I think that’s what most decals are) and just put a note in the description that the vinyl is permanent so the customers know. Hope that helps!! 👍🏼
is that the design space software at marker 4:34? if so how'd you get the stencil layout? I also see that you physically have already separated stencil paper? or did you cut you vinyl like that? sorry for all the questions, just getting started with my daughter in this venture.
Hi. The program I used at that time stamp is called Inkscape. I love to design with it because you can do so much more than in Design space. I have a few Inkscape tutorials on my channel. And I did cut all the vinyl and stencils. That’s ok hope I answered your questions!
Hi! It depends on what you are doing with it, I would use permanent for racing stripes, business logos, and things like that. And definitely use temp for temporary decals like seasonal stickers, “baby on board” and things you will want to remove in the future.👍🏻
I’ve had my circuit for a couple years and have not yet used it 🤦🏻♀️ I’m just nervous to get started 😬😆 Can you help me get over the hump ? I need a couple decals to place in the inside of my business windows. I know the image would have to be sticky on the face so it goes onto the window so people can see it from the outside and the elements are not touching the image. Can you help me? I need to do 2 QR codes which seems tedious. Can you help give me step by step instructions, I wanna make sure I’m placing the image down the correct way so I don’t accidentally have it flipped wrong & waste material. which blade? 45*? Thoughts ?
Hi you’re welcome! I think I have them on my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/TheAppalachianHomeCo?ref=seller-platform-mcnav. If they aren’t there I will post them for you!
Hi thank you so much! For personal use I would recommend premium temporary vinyl on car glass and paint . . I have had a temp decal on my glass for several months and it is really well stuck! It also depends on the decal. For glass I would prob use temporary and for things like business logos, racing stripes, tag numbers, camper decals, etc. definitely I would use permanent👍🏻
How you do it when you have more than one color???? How do you put them in the correct place when we have to transfer it over? How do you guide yourself?
Hi! You can definitely layer vinyl of different colors. I start with the largest or top color layer (it depends on the decal), cut it out, weed, apply transfer tape, remove the vinyl backing. Cut out the next color, weed, and position the transfer tape with the first layer over the second cut, pick up the second layer vinyl and remove that vinyl backing. Then next color layer and so on. Then you can place it all at one time, or if making decals, leave the last layer backing on. Hope that makes sense I will post a video on that process.👍🏻
Hi! I really do like both. There are pros and cons to both ... I like how Cricut brand has a plastic backing and doesn’t tear and stick on the mats, but I like that Oracal has Permanent Vinyl that you can get in Matte finish. So I use them based on that mostly.
I just got a Cricut maker and the vinyl was horrible to remove compared to your video. It was Cricut brand premium vinyl. Seems as though the blade wasn’t cutting through. Any recommendations?
Hi! Permanent is suppose to last much longer than removable vinyl, and harder to peel off after a couple days. Permanent al so leaves a residue when removed. Removable adheres really well but can be removed easily with no residue left on the surface. I use temp when I am making window decals for my car or seasonal sticker decor for windows and doors. You would use permanent for say, signs, mailbox numbers, business signs, and things you would not be removing.
Hi! I usually take the cost of materials and triple it to start, then adjust a bit if I need to. I have an idea of what I want out of each sign and try to keep it reasonable and comparable to other prices. That seems to work for me! I only ship thru Etsy and Etsy does the work in figuring shipping. They figure shipping for the buyers and I purchase shipping labels thru Etsy ...it’s cheaper than at the counter. If paying at the post office you can get an idea of how much it will cost thru their online shipping rates. Hope that helps!
Hi! I typically use Oracal Vinyl and Cricut vinyl. I love both and they are very similar. You will want to go with permanent vinyl for cars since it is exposed to weather and rain. I have used temporary tho before it just doesn’t last as long. Hope that helps!
Hello, I’ve seen conflicting recommendations on whether to use “permanent” or “removable” vinyl for the body of a car. You have stated that “permanent” is preferred due to longevity, will it damage the paint on the car upon removal?
B Jolie Hi. It depends on if you plan to remove the decal or if a customer plans to remove later on. I don’t think permanent will pull off the paint but it will leave a residue that most likely won’t come off. I have a temporary vinyl sticker that is holding up great but I want the option to remove it later. If you are unsure I would stick with temporary it adheres great to glossy surfaces like glass and a car body and should last a long time 👍🏻
Hi there is the Maker 3 and the Explore Air 3 which allow you to use smart materials that do not require a mat. You can also cut longer designs, up to 12 feet long

The 631 is great and I use it a lot and it’s super easy to remove from paint, walls, glass etc. The permanent is harder to remove than 631 so only use it if planning on keeping it a while. If you sell decals I would give both options to the customer. Hope that helps!
Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home what about for Car decals, which would you suggest using?
Love this video! Could you please list the instructions you include with the decals?
Thanks so much I will post them to my website for you. . I’ll try and have them up tonight the site is theappalachianhome.com/freeprintables. 👍🏻

What settings do you use on the cricut machine for material? Just the premium vinyl? What setting is your cricut on?
Hi I use premium vinyl for most adhesive vinyl. I knock up the pressure to more when the blade gets duller. I also use the premium vinyl- pearl setting a lot. It works on the cricut glossy outdoor vinyl better.
Thank you for your videos!
Thank so much for watching these videos!!
hi! my sister and i have just ordered the explore air 2 to make some decals and stickers with! could you explain what the purpose of the transfer tape is please? we aren't sure what it does :) thanks!
Hi! and thanks for your knowledge! I would like to ask you and if you can guide me, how to get the prices of the cuts? Thank you so much !
Hope that helps!!
ohhhh Thanks for answering me! many thanks!

Thank you
For decals that are meant for a car would you recommend the removable or the permanent vinyl?
Thank you very helpful! Following you for sure
Thank you so much! So glad it was helpful!
is that the design space software at marker 4:34? if so how'd you get the stencil layout? I also see that you physically have already separated stencil paper? or did you cut you vinyl like that? sorry for all the questions, just getting started with my daughter in this venture.
Hi. The program I used at that time stamp is called Inkscape. I love to design with it because you can do so much more than in Design space. I have a few Inkscape tutorials on my channel. And I did cut all the vinyl and stencils. That’s ok hope I answered your questions!
When making car decals, should they be made of permanent vinyl or removable vinyl?
45*? Thoughts ?
New subbie here! Thanks for sharing.
Yay!! Thanks so much!😊
Thanks for the great video! Have you tried weeding on the Cricut mat? I find it a lot easier as the mat holds the vinyl in place while you work.
Hi! Yes that’s a great tip I have tried it but I mostly forget to do it!☺️

Thank you for the video. Where can I find the family stick figure cut files?
Hi you’re welcome! I think I have them on my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/TheAppalachianHomeCo?ref=seller-platform-mcnav. If they aren’t there I will post them for you!
I did not see it on your Etsy page.
Sandra Carrillo So sorry! I have it listed on there now. Thank you!
Thank you!
hello i like the video but just one question what type software you use, 4:43 i see you using something else
Hi! I almost always use Inkscape to actually design svgs and pngs. It is free to you and easy to import designs from there to Cricut.
Can you share a link for the blades you mention from Amazon? I didn’t see it in the description box. Thanks!
So sorry! I will add them in the description!
Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home thank you!
Awesome video! Do you recommend Premium vinyl or permanent vinyl for the car decals?
Did I miss the part where you import the image and set it for cut?
Hi. I have a step by step on how to import files and save as cut here: How to use Cricut Cutting Machines (For Beginners!). It will walk you thru!
Is the Oracal vinyl better to work with than the cricut brand in your experience?
I have been trying to figure out how to make decals . Some decals can’t do unless I’m doing it wrong ..
Hi what decals do you want to make?
What's the difference between permanent vinyl and removable? What would use for both types?
How do you figure out how much to sell your products for and how do you know how much to add for shipping?
What’s the best vinyl to use for car decals?
If you are unsure I would stick with temporary it adheres great to glossy surfaces like glass and a car body and should last a long time 👍🏻
Is the circuit maker the latest model do you know? Thanks in advance
Hi there is the Maker 3 and the Explore Air 3 which allow you to use smart materials that do not require a mat. You can also cut longer designs, up to 12 feet long
