My roommate wants letters for his work van - he is a painter. If i can do it myself, that would be awesome and save money really. Glad i found this. thanks again
I'm trying to find your etsy shop because I love a lot of your designs, but also thank you for the videos as I'm looking into getting a cricut and trying to watch all kinds of videos on cricut macines, projects and things like that!
Thank you for a clear cut to the point tutorial! Its SO hard to find that on any subject. I combed YT and found alot of videos on making the sticker/decals but none as straight to the point and easy to understand as this one. Again Thank you!
Thank you for an easy tutorial with great explanations! It is really difficult to find "how-to" videos for beginners with clear and concise instructions. I definitely will subscribe to your channel!!
Hi I use premium vinyl for most adhesive vinyl. I knock up the pressure to more when the blade gets duller. I also use the premium vinyl- pearl setting a lot. It works on the cricut glossy outdoor vinyl better.
I want to make decals to put on to the awning of a Tent (like people set up at venues to sell products) do I need to use the transfer tape for that or can I just remove the backing of the vinyl and stick it straight to my tent where I want it to me?
Hi! I haven't tried vinyl on that kind of material so I'm not sure how well it sticks,, but you can totally try skipping the transfer tape if the design is really simple. If you have a lot of letters and parts to the decal, it may take you a while to remove and stick each part seperately, so then I would definitely use transfer tape.
Hi! Congrats on your Cricut! Yes I am using a program called Inkscape to design. I have some tutorials on my channel on it. I love it it’s free and you can do more with design than with Design Space.👍🏻
Great video. I’m attempting to make some decals with small fonts. How small can the font be can or could you recommend A size similar to a large print book that can be cut for permanent vinyl. I can’t find a store clerk with knowledge with this question.
Hello I have the Cricut joy and it’s great. But I just ordered the Cricut air 2 and I had a question when you make car decals do people have trouble peeling back the transfer tape from the paper? Because I made a decal for a friend and he had trouble peeling back the paper
Hi! Yes that happens it really depends on the combination of transfer tape and vinyl, and also how intricate your design is. I use medium tack transfer tape and sometimes I have problems with the backing but if I opt for strong grip it does better with the backing, but wants to pull off the vinyl when trying to apply a decal on paint. I would try strong grip if you are applying decals to glass or smooth metal, and stick with medium tack if you are making decals for signs and things. Hope that helps!
Loved this video! I just got a Cricut for Christmas and I’m trying to learn all there is to learn! I’m a bit confused from other videos, could you explain what the difference in Iron On and Vinyl is? I thought they were the same but the cricut has a setting for both! Lol
Hi thank you! Iron-on material is used for placing decals on surfaces, such as T-shirts, using an iron or heat press. You would cut most iron on material backward, or mirrored. Vinyl, or adhesive vinyl, would be used for car decals or wall decals, mug decals, etc. You can get it in removable or permanent but it is placed directly on the surface either by just sticking it on or by using transfer tape to transfer the whole decal to a surface. Hope that helps!
Thanks for sharing. I bought my Cricut Maker last year as an upgrade to my Cricut Explore Air. I am now retired so planning some projects for the cricut maker. Do you think that the vinyl would stick onto wax fabric or waterproof fabric. A friend has asked if I could make some pouches with his business name on them.
Hi! It doesn't matter at all...I like to use the same colors when I am doing several different colors, just to help keep track of which color to place on the mat. But mostly I disregard the color of the text in Design Space if I am doing one color.
is that the design space software at marker 4:34? if so how'd you get the stencil layout? I also see that you physically have already separated stencil paper? or did you cut you vinyl like that? sorry for all the questions, just getting started with my daughter in this venture.
Hi. The program I used at that time stamp is called Inkscape. I love to design with it because you can do so much more than in Design space. I have a few Inkscape tutorials on my channel. And I did cut all the vinyl and stencils. That’s ok hope I answered your questions!
Sure! I use the 30 deg (fine cut)for most thin materials like paper, HTV and adhesive vinyl. The 45 degree you can use for the same but it will cut thicker vinyls and 2-4mil stencil materials. For 6mil stencils and thicker materials like cork boards and such you can use the deep cut (60 degree) blade. If you go into your material list where you select your material (just before cutting) you will find what each material specifies, fine cut or deep cut. Hope that helps!

Hi! I typically use Oracal Vinyl and Cricut vinyl. I love both and they are very similar. You will want to go with permanent vinyl for cars since it is exposed to weather and rain. I have used temporary tho before it just doesn’t last as long. Hope that helps!
Hello, I’ve seen conflicting recommendations on whether to use “permanent” or “removable” vinyl for the body of a car. You have stated that “permanent” is preferred due to longevity, will it damage the paint on the car upon removal?
B Jolie Hi. It depends on if you plan to remove the decal or if a customer plans to remove later on. I don’t think permanent will pull off the paint but it will leave a residue that most likely won’t come off. I have a temporary vinyl sticker that is holding up great but I want the option to remove it later. If you are unsure I would stick with temporary it adheres great to glossy surfaces like glass and a car body and should last a long time 👍🏻
Hi you’re welcome! I think I have them on my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/TheAppalachianHomeCo?ref=seller-platform-mcnav. If they aren’t there I will post them for you!
Hi! You would use different blades for thicker materials such as leather or chip board, and also for fabric. For adhesive vinyl I always use the fine point blade.👍🏻
How you do it when you have more than one color???? How do you put them in the correct place when we have to transfer it over? How do you guide yourself?
Hi! You can definitely layer vinyl of different colors. I start with the largest or top color layer (it depends on the decal), cut it out, weed, apply transfer tape, remove the vinyl backing. Cut out the next color, weed, and position the transfer tape with the first layer over the second cut, pick up the second layer vinyl and remove that vinyl backing. Then next color layer and so on. Then you can place it all at one time, or if making decals, leave the last layer backing on. Hope that makes sense I will post a video on that process.👍🏻
Hi! I usually take the cost of materials and triple it to start, then adjust a bit if I need to. I have an idea of what I want out of each sign and try to keep it reasonable and comparable to other prices. That seems to work for me! I only ship thru Etsy and Etsy does the work in figuring shipping. They figure shipping for the buyers and I purchase shipping labels thru Etsy ...it’s cheaper than at the counter. If paying at the post office you can get an idea of how much it will cost thru their online shipping rates. Hope that helps!
Yes this video gave me a great start but the one question I have is where do you get your images? I seem to have a issue to find imagines that I can actually download to use for decals. Thank you
hi! my sister and i have just ordered the explore air 2 to make some decals and stickers with! could you explain what the purpose of the transfer tape is please? we aren't sure what it does :) thanks!
Of course! Transfer tape is applied over the decal after removing all the parts you don’t want to keep. The tape keeps all the parts in tact when you remove the backing when you get ready to apply a decal. Once the decal is placed on the surface you can remove the transfer by rolling and pulling it off the decal. It really just is a means of transferring the entire decal while keeping everything in place if that makes sense?☺️ Hope that helps!
Hapi Crush Hi. I think most decals you buy are permanent, but, I personally do not like to use permanent for car decals unless you are making racing stripes, business logos, and decals that are suppose to remain for a long time. For decals people would want to change after a while (“baby on board”, cute sayings, “soccer mom”,etc.) I would use temporary. I use temp for my personal car decals and they last a long time, thru rain and weather, heat and cold, and are much easier to remove. Vinyl tends to really stick even more after being in the sun for a while. That’s my personal preference tho, hope that helps!
Hi! It depends on what you are doing with it, I would use permanent for racing stripes, business logos, and things like that. And definitely use temp for temporary decals like seasonal stickers, “baby on board” and things you will want to remove in the future.👍🏻
Hi! I take the square foot area of vinyl I use time the cost per sq ft to get material cost, then at least times that by three to cover time and cutting expense. I will add some if I need to but usually that gets me to a good starting point. Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for this information. I don't have one yet but the machine I'll get cricuts air 2 I think that what it's call. Lol. Anyway I don't have a computer but I have a android smart phone. Someone told me I could use it. Do you know if I can. Thank you in advance ♡
You’re welcome! I am not sure about the Explore Air 2 with a smartphone definitely check about that tho. I know it is not Bluetooth capable like the Maker so I’m not sure how you connect to a phone . . USB maybe? The maker will connect thru Bluetooth and I use it all the time wirelessly with an iPad.
Hi the design programs I use, which is usually Inkscape, have features that let you curve text around objects. Cricut’s design program(Design Space) also allow you to curve text.
.This was a great informative video .I have the Cricut Explore Air ,I think it is the explore 1.I am looking to get the most of this machine decals seem perfect I have been thinking of selling on a Etsy. Can I ask if you would do a video on how you design your decals and convert them into SVG files .Thank you for this informative video really enjoyed but I enjoy all your videos .Love and blessings from the United Kingdom x
Hi! I really do like both. There are pros and cons to both ... I like how Cricut brand has a plastic backing and doesn’t tear and stick on the mats, but I like that Oracal has Permanent Vinyl that you can get in Matte finish. So I use them based on that mostly.
Hi! Permanent is suppose to last much longer than removable vinyl, and harder to peel off after a couple days. Permanent al so leaves a residue when removed. Removable adheres really well but can be removed easily with no residue left on the surface. I use temp when I am making window decals for my car or seasonal sticker decor for windows and doors. You would use permanent for say, signs, mailbox numbers, business signs, and things you would not be removing.
Hi there is the Maker 3 and the Explore Air 3 which allow you to use smart materials that do not require a mat. You can also cut longer designs, up to 12 feet long
Question I want to start making decals but my biggest question is how do you make the huge decals for walls etc like the settings sizes etc please help
Hi. For large wall decals I always design them the size I want them to be. Then splice them up in sections in Design Space to fit 11.5” x 23.5”. I start with splicing 2 or 3 lines of text, then if those are too long I will splice them I half or thirds at a spot there is not a lot of letter pieces. If there are large words I will splice those out too. After cutting and weeding I lay out all the pieces and line up the sentences and words. I usually tape them all down, to the table or floor, then start placing transfer tape over the whole thing together. Hope that makes sense!
My husband wants me to make labels for his tool boxes(metal) and some wooden boxes. Whats the smallest lettering can I make? Also can I make more than 1 word at a time ,like wrenches, screwdrivers and such or is it 1 label at a time? Thank you
Yes I think I have those posted on my website here is the link docs.google.com/document/d/1xDSxJdTWep0uLu3DdSGapnm37_0K7YWV3c3tpqFn8uQ/edit?usp=sharing
Hi! For things like window decals and decorative decals I use temporary personally. I wouldn’t use permanent for decorative decals I would want to remove later on my own personal car. But for more permanent decals, like trailer numbers, racing stripes, or things that will probably stay for a long time I’d use permanent. If selling online I go with permanent (I think that’s what most decals are) and just put a note in the description that the vinyl is permanent so the customers know. Hope that helps!! 👍🏼
I’ve had my circuit for a couple years and have not yet used it 🤦🏻♀️ I’m just nervous to get started 😬😆 Can you help me get over the hump ? I need a couple decals to place in the inside of my business windows. I know the image would have to be sticky on the face so it goes onto the window so people can see it from the outside and the elements are not touching the image. Can you help me? I need to do 2 QR codes which seems tedious. Can you help give me step by step instructions, I wanna make sure I’m placing the image down the correct way so I don’t accidentally have it flipped wrong & waste material. which blade? 45*? Thoughts ?
To clarify - when you are selling the decal - you are sending the vinyl decal along with a piece of transfer tape for them to do that part themselves onto their desired surface?
Hello. When cutting adhesive vinyl you will place it on the mat right side up and cut out the decal. When using heat transfer vinyl ( for T-shirts and things) the shiny side you will place down on the mat and mirror the image to cut out the iron on decal. Hope that answers your question!
Hi. I have used a lot of brands and I am currently using Greenstar Layflat clear medium tack. It’s more like surgical tape not as stiff and removes easier.
Hi! I do allow customers to request temp vinyl for car decals but I mainly use permanent vinyl. For wall decals though and for decals you would place on furniture or mirrors in the home I use temporary vinyl. Hope that helps!
Hi thank you so much! I did make my own envelopes for a while out of brown cardstock material. I haven't in a while but I have seen some at Hobby Lobby that I have thought about buying...
That was amazing product demo and you made me a fan. Just starting out on the business side of it. RUclips doesnt pay as well as it used too. Need to make some money to keep my woodworking hobie going. Well that's what the wife said lol. she claims I spend too much :)
Hi! It all depends on the material cost for me. I add up the cost of materials including transfer tape, vinyl, and packaging and triple that. So if i make a 6x6 decal and vinyl costs $1.00 per foot, transfer cost the same, and packaging costs say 50 cents then I have about $1.00 in a decal material cost. I would make the price no less than $3, and probably more like $4-$5 depending on how complex the image is. But that’s just me and where I start when pricing stuff! Hope that helps!!
Thank you for sharing such clear, concise instructions without a lot of 'talk over'

The tape keeps all the parts in tact when you remove the backing when you get ready to apply a decal. Once the decal is placed on the surface you can remove the transfer by rolling and pulling it off the decal. It really just is a means of transferring the entire decal while keeping everything in place if that makes sense?☺️ Hope that helps!
what type of vinyl do you recommend use for car decals?
Hapi Crush Hi. I think most decals you buy are permanent, but, I personally do not like to use permanent for car decals unless you are making racing stripes, business logos, and decals that are suppose to remain for a long time. For decals people would want to change after a while (“baby on board”, cute sayings, “soccer mom”,etc.) I would use temporary. I use temp for my personal car decals and they last a long time, thru rain and weather, heat and cold, and are much easier to remove. Vinyl tends to really stick even more after being in the sun for a while. That’s my personal preference tho, hope that helps!
When making car decals, should they be made of permanent vinyl or removable vinyl?
Hi! It depends on what you are doing with it, I would use permanent for racing stripes, business logos, and things like that. And definitely use temp for temporary decals like seasonal stickers, “baby on board” and things you will want to remove in the future.👍🏻
How do you go about pricing your decals
Hi! I take the square foot area of vinyl I use time the cost per sq ft to get material cost, then at least times that by three to cover time and cutting expense. I will add some if I need to but usually that gets me to a good starting point. Hope that helps!
Love your channel thank you for the time you take to teaching us how to use this machine
Oh you’re so welcome thank you!🙂
I haven’t watched the video yet, but I’m going to subscribe due to this comment. I need help!!!! 😅😅
Get Video . Just got an air 2 for Christmas.
Yay so glad for you!☺
Thank you
How do you make stick people family to use on the Cricut?
Hi. I drew them on my iPad in a program called Procreate, then uploaded them to Cricut Design Space.
@@AppalachianHomeCo thank you so much. I appreciate your response! I'm a new subscriber and I'm really enjoying you're videos!
@@joyceromero9878 I’m so glad you enjoy them thank you! 😊
@@AppalachianHomeCo Thank you. Yes I'll check it out.
$24 on amazon, I can afford this bit. Thank you and is what i wanted this for
What transfer paper are you using
Hi! I use Greenstar Layflat clear medium tack. I get it from US Cutter.
How can you use a “saying “ around your design? Such as a ball and the team name around it?
Hi the design programs I use, which is usually Inkscape, have features that let you curve text around objects. Cricut’s design program(Design Space) also allow you to curve text.
.This was a great informative video .I have the Cricut Explore Air ,I think it is the explore 1.I am looking to get the most of this machine decals seem perfect I have been thinking of selling on a Etsy. Can I ask if you would do a video on how you design your decals and convert them into SVG files .Thank you for this informative video really enjoyed but I enjoy all your videos .Love and blessings from the United Kingdom x
Thank you so much! Sure I can do a video on that for you I use Inkscape to design. So glad you enjoy these videos!
What create space do you use?
Is the Oracal vinyl better to work with than the cricut brand in your experience?
Hi! I really do like both. There are pros and cons to both ... I like how Cricut brand has a plastic backing and doesn’t tear and stick on the mats, but I like that Oracal has Permanent Vinyl that you can get in Matte finish. So I use them based on that mostly.
Can you show in a video of how you make your card stock envelopes??
Sure! I will post a tutorial for you.
What's the difference between permanent vinyl and removable? What would use for both types?
Thank you for sharing!
Is the circuit maker the latest model do you know? Thanks in advance
Hi there is the Maker 3 and the Explore Air 3 which allow you to use smart materials that do not require a mat. You can also cut longer designs, up to 12 feet long
Brilliant video. I've just subscribed.
That’s awesome thank you so much!🥰
Can I bake it to make it washable?
🤔 Haven’t tried that. . But it sounds good maybe at a low temp so not to melt the vinyl 👍🏻
Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home do u have a tutorial for the large decals you lost me at splicing rookie cricut air explore 2 =/
Thanks for all you do to help us out!!!
Of course thank you! I love doing these videos.:)
My husband wants me to make labels for his tool boxes(metal) and some wooden boxes. Whats the smallest lettering can I make? Also can I make more than 1 word at a time ,like wrenches, screwdrivers and such or is it 1 label at a time? Thank you
Hi Christy. I have a question. I need to Plotter some numbers for candles. Which Folie should I use?
Can you post you instructions list you send for your decals pls thank you
Yes I think I have those posted on my website here is the link docs.google.com/document/d/1xDSxJdTWep0uLu3DdSGapnm37_0K7YWV3c3tpqFn8uQ/edit?usp=sharing
For decals that are meant for a car would you recommend the removable or the permanent vinyl?
Thanks for sharing 😃
Hi yes the transfer goes along with the decal for the customer to use and place on the surface...and yes I do sell the decals on Etsy.
@@AppalachianHomeCo They will need the transfer tape even if the decal is going on a window?
Do you put the vinyl shiny side up or down?
Hello. When cutting adhesive vinyl you will place it on the mat right side up and cut out the decal. When using heat transfer vinyl ( for T-shirts and things) the shiny side you will place down on the mat and mirror the image to cut out the iron on decal. Hope that answers your question!
Hi, could you recommend me a high quality transfer tape? TIA
Use "cricut transfer tape". Its $8.00.. They sell it at Walmart. I got mines at target. yesterday
Hi. I have used a lot of brands and I am currently using Greenstar Layflat clear medium tack. It’s more like surgical tape not as stiff and removes easier.
Would you suggest permanent or removable vinyl for decals? Or do you let your customer decide?
Hi! I do allow customers to request temp vinyl for car decals but I mainly use permanent vinyl. For wall decals though and for decals you would place on furniture or mirrors in the home I use temporary vinyl. Hope that helps!
@@AppalachianHomeCo Awesome! Thanks so much!

Can I ask where you got your brown cardstock envelopes? Thank you! LOVED your video!
😂 Thanks so much! Hobbies can be expensive I know😏 That’s a shame about RUclips tho, guess I will have to make more decals!
Hi! and thanks for your knowledge! I would like to ask you and if you can guide me, how to get the prices of the cuts? Thank you so much !
Hope that helps!!
ohhhh Thanks for answering me! many thanks!
What design program are you using?
Hi! I use Inkscape a lot to create SVGs I have some videos on Inkscape.
