Great stuff! Right on point (imo). I went with the 155cm Gremlin and ground a crosshatch structure into the base; which helps immensely with speed as long as it's maintained with proper wax and technique. Love the Orca in Pow only conditions but choose the Gremlin if going back and forth between sidecountry pow and in resort mess. I've ridden, raced, terrain parked a gazillion decks from almost every manufacturer, some costing triple the Gremlin, over 3 decades. I cannot remember a more fun board to rip into a nasty, deep, 'nad dragging, toeside carve then pop off a side hit into the trees. This little ripper will send you into the prettiest reverts too! Not a quiver killer, one does it all...but definitely the most ridden board in my quiver of almost a dozen, late model boards!
@@thegoodridesnow I'm currently on a 158w Flight Attendant (for the resort days) and have a 160w Hometown Hero (for the off piste and freeride days). Love both boards a lot but the edgehold here in quite often hard to icy conditions is, as mentioned by you guys a lot, not quite there (at all). Thought about getting the Gremlin for those hardpack slope days. I'm 6'3" 165pounds, size 12 Burton Photons. Was thinking about the 158 Gremlin to give me the extra bit of edge underfoot to prevent that nasty toedrag. 27cm waist width for carving are definitely intriguing I must admit. Would that be the board to go to? Would appreciate your opinion on that. Thanks again for this one and a bunch of other reviews, they've really helped me a lot!!!
@@t.blaschke7461 That would be a great board for hard snow. I think your boot size is best with the 158 for a super wide hard carver but the 155 would be really good with your weight and probably be ok with toe/heel drag. Your call but I like your logic behind the 158.
@@thegoodridesnow thank you very much for your quick reply! I've always had the bootsize-weight- dilemma...That's why I switched from a 161 to a 158 FA, as I was too light for the stiffness of the 161. Would you rather go according to weight in the Gremlin as the 155 isn't narrow either? Is the Gremlin as stiff as the FA or softer to push the camber? I'd like to go with the 158 but if I end up like with the FA, too light to get proper edge grip out of the camber, it wouldn't make too much sense to have the extra width but not the weight/power to get it to dig in. Really appreciate your expertise and how you try your best to take everything into consideration, especially when comparing similar boards. That intell is priceless especially for people like me who don't have the opportunity to try before they buy.... again: thanks!!
@@t.blaschke7461 Thanks man! So I'm a size 9 but 185lbs-190lbs so I'm often choosing better control for my size 9 boot size over a wider board that matches my weight better. For you, its the opposite. I think the 158 is the better call to be drag free but it will be a lot of board to handle. I'd say if you aren't booting out on the 159w FA then go 155 as it's a little wider. It won't ride exactly like I described in the review (will turn a lot faster with 12's) but you will be soo much happier on that vs. the FA in hard snow and it won't ride you like the 158 might.
@thegoodridesnow Advanced New England/Ice Coast rider, 5’10”, 205 lbs, 11.5 boot. Daily driver is a Gnu RCC3 158w. Typical riding is 75% charging hard on black/blue, 25% goofing around on blue/green side hits and rollers. Love Mervin tech for the type of conditions I typically see. Looking hard at getting a Gremlin to make a two-board quiver. From what I have read, the Gremlin will do well in powder conditions and spring slop and just general fun boosting off of stuff. Volume shifted with magnatraction looks like it would have no problems railing high speed turns on hardpack as well. I am torn on sizing: 152 or 155 cm? Boots should fit either, not sure how much high-speed stability/carving prowess I would be trading for agility/playfulness going to the smaller board. Hoping to pick the size that won’t make me want to head to the parking lot to swap out with the RCC3 in the afternoon when the good snow is busted because the Gremlin is too squirrely.
Thanks! So tough call. If you want another directional turny board but with a ton of grip and even a little more camber go Gremlin. It still has a very different overall ride than the Showstopper. If you want an almost full camber poppy but softer more playful twin go Indoor. Cheers!
Just discovered this board and very impressed with all the reviews. I’m 5’4”, 150 lbs, boot size 7 and was wondering if a 148 gremlin would be too big for me since I usually ride a 148 for non volume shifted boards. Thanks!
This will feel like a lot of board for you in this size. Maybe the 143 Telos Back Slash might be a little better if you want to do volume shifted boards and want a similar mostly camber ride.
Hey Biesty, got the 152 gremlin and have to ride it on the front most inserts to avoid chatter, on 21" stance. Do you think a 155 or 158 would change the characteristics of the ride enough to warrant replacing it? 5'9" 180# 12 step on boots. Thank you!
If you got this for hard to icy snow it might be worth sizing up to the 155 would help and you could easily ride it with your specs (especially your 12 boots) because there aren't many boards that ride and grip like this. If you got this for riding all conditions you might be better off with a different board with more damp construction.
Great overall review! I recently got the 155 Gremlin. I am about 5’8, 165lbs, size 9-9.5 boot size. The front looks a lot bigger than my 156 board. Do you think that will be a problem? Unfortunately it was a package deal, so returning it might be a hassle. Thank you.
Thanks! That will feel pretty wide for your specs. As a clean groomer carver this will be exceptional. As a daily driver you might find it very challenging turning in uneven terrain or when the resorts start to get messy. I'm 5'10, 185lbs and size 9 boots. I went with the 152 after riding the 155.
great video, keep it up! I am 6'2, boot size 11 and weigh 190 lbs so the 155 Gremlin would probably fit me the best right? My carving got a lot better but with my current nitro team board I boot out a lot and lose my edge. Do you think the 155 gremlin is wide enough for my boot size so I won't boot out?
East coast. Just ordered a gremlin. Been riding a gilson with the weird edge. I don’t hate it. But in the ice, yeah, rather ride my 18 year old Lamar. Ice coast🤘🏻
I have 2 dancehauls and I love them. I can't find a dancehaul pro. I'm looking for something stiffer. I hit mostly jumps and groomers. Sounds like the GNU would be a good board for me ? What do you think? I'm looking at the GNU or the orca.
Flex is similar but you get more camber so maybe. You do get a slower base though. The Orca could work too but it's a very different ride than the Gremlin and Dancehaul's you own. It will feel loose between the feet and auto spinny one footing/flat basing but it will be more stiff.
@The Good Ride thanks for the response. I have 2 dancehauls 152. I decided to get the normal orca in 153. I still plan on getting a GNU gremlin at the end of the season. Haha
9.5 US? If so I'd probably go 155 just for your weight and height as it's a lot of fun to carve the bigger sizes. I'd only go 152 if you see a lot of uneven snow/bumps and need to turn quickly. If 9.5UK definitely go 155.
Hi Mr Beastie, thanks for such an indepth review. Great to jnderstand how the gremlin stacks up against other well known, iconic boards. I'm interested but not sure about size? I am about 180lbs and 5'10". Thinking the 152 might be fun but concerned I would boot out my size 10 feet when carving. Could I get away with it or should I size up to the 155?
Many thanks! You won't boot out with the 152 but I think you might like the 155 a little better if you want this for carving and for better float in pow. I would only go 152 if you see a lot of messy tracked up crowded days where you want an easier board to control. I am 5'10", 185-190lbs and I preferred the 152 because my size 9 boots could turn it easier. The 155 felt a bit much for me unless conditions were clean. With size 10's you should do a lot better with the 155 in messy snow.
Thanks for the review! Do you think a 148 would be a good size for someone who is 5'7, 120 lbs, and 9.5 boot? I have a riders choice 151.5 and I love it, but im looking for something that floats a bit better in the pow.
Yeah that could work but the Gremlin isn't the best in powder for boards of this design. You might like the Orca 150 and possibly the 147 but it's a lot more narrow. Maybe the Powgoda 152, Mind Expander 150 or Never Summer Swift 152 or Korua Transition Finder 150 or Excavator 150.
Great review, I'm thinking of getting the gremlin for myself after a LOT of research! I am 5'8" 140 lbs, what size would you recommend? I'm mighty confused if I should go 152 or 148 (wishing they made a 150!)
Yes give it a try and see how it feels for you. There is a 2" set back on side cut so you should be able to move it forward a lot and still not be off center. There is no right or wrong in snowboarding. Just what works for you.
What is your thought on the Gremlin vs the T Rice Pro in powder? On paper, it sounds like the Gremlin could replace it, but I'm curious on the powder performance of the two.
You mean the T.Rice Pro Pointy Twin? Both aren't that great in pow. The Pointy is very good for a twin but not compared to boards like the Orca. Speaking of the Orca would be a better call for pow vs. the Gremlin and T.Rice Pro Twins.
@@thegoodridesnow I like to ride steep (I'm in Utah and love Snowbird and Snowbasin), so I've been able to make the T Rice work quite well, but I love to carve deep as well, so that's why I was sort of starting to lean towards the Gremlin over the Orca. For a good deep powder day, I may just look into a straight powder board. Kind of hard to pick really haha. I can get the Gremlin for $400 right now, so I think I'll just pull the trigger.
Your weight is fine for the 152 and your boot size might like the 152 a little better. I think at 135 you might like the 148 a little better and your boots will be ok with it.
