I have been traveling to the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 since the year 2000. I can tell you one thing for sure. Do not open your mouth when you are in a taxi with a Dominican friend of yours. It’s best to let the Dominican talk. Even if you speak fluent Spanish as I do. Let the Dominican talk! The moment you open your American mouth they will here your accent and the price will be raised. Guaranteed.

I lived in the DR for 18 months. It was a bit "duro" in some respects, but if I hadn't broken my ankle, I was planning on not leaving. I loved the music, the people, the climate, the food. Pan de agua and jugo de chinola every morning from the colmado. It just doesn't get any better.

I've never had a problem in the DR it helps when you have a good amigo that lives there, tbh every where you go the ppl of the country know your not from the place that's a fact. Put it this way if your looking for trouble, trouble has a way of finding you. Just blend in with the crowed and everything will be fine. There's scammers hustlers world wide no need to be scared ppl we all get ripped off in life and that's factually but we learn from it n move on.

Learn to speak Spanish very well and understand the culture first in their country. Be firm, and courteous to everybody. Latin dominated cultures are pretty much the same from Mexico, Caribbean, Central America, and South America. Firmness is the attitude that they understand. Do not bullshit these people because they know it when it comes their way. Be genuine as a person and it goes a long way. Never interfere with their culture if it will save your own life by shutting the fuck up and keeping out of their business. I have learned this by going on summer trips to the Philippines with my parents because I was born there and know the culture first hand. The Philippines is a Hispanicized country. The traditions and cultures of Hispanic societies are the same from over 500 years plus of Spanish rule and culture to include all present countries once ruled by the Spanish Empire. I dated a woman from the DR in Panama back when I was stationed there as a soldier. The most refined woman of Spanish culture and very lady like. Very amazing indeed. Maritza is a very beautiful woman in looks and as a woman.Too bad she had to go back to her family to take care of them. I never saw her again after saying good bye to her. I looked for her on Facebook and never found her. May she have a good life and the best.

my wife is dominican and lives in santo domingo....the ppl there know right away that your a foreigner before you even speak.. alot of ppl in d.r know how americans are and their style. for instance on a hot afternoon american tourists would be wearing shorts, sandles, t-shirts signs ithat indicate they are foreigners whereas the locals wear jeans, dress shirts, polos, shirts, hoodies because they are accustomed to the heat..then when you speak ppl will know where you are from originally from whether it is from the smaller towns, other spanish speaking countries or western "gringo" countries. Im colombian and ppl know withing the first 10 words that I am colombian.... ALSO IN THE CAPITAL THERE IS ALOT OF CRIME SO BE VIGILANT!!!

I visited the D.R. back in Sept. 2011. I ended up staying in Juan Dolio instead of Santo Domingo due to hotel rate I wanted gettting sold out. I was at the "Plaza Real Resort'' for two weeks. I checked my surroundings, as well as co operated w/local Policias when getting checked prior to heading to beach. I had a pimp try to hook me up w/a prostitute but I said no due to not having any more dineros. Also I didn't think it was safe where he wanted to take me. The only thing bad happened was when I got cheated out of $20 usd for a 5 min. massage. Other than that I still had a good time, ppl was friendly. I definitely plan to revisit again but in other parts. Maybe will relocate there in the future.

I came from DR to US when I was about 12 when I came back my Spanish was different from relating with Hispanics from other countries here and they raised the prices on me all the time. Because my Spanish didn’t sound 100% Dominican. Also you can get robbed. Easily.

The Filipinos also point with thiet lips. As far a sound making that could be class based. I hang out with many professional Dominicans and they don't seem to have those traits. As far as prices, if you go to a established resturaunt prices are posted and fixed. But check your bill always! My Dominican wife don't play!
Watch for the taxi drivers they will try to upcharge you and they will even do that to other Dominicans . I saw my wife argue with a taxi driver and trust me you don't want argue with a dominican woman lol.
But honestly, if you have good Dominican friends they will watch out for you. As an American it was very easy to make friends. I have friends at the top law firm, Arizza Guzzman, Judges, police Luitenants and all it takes is one phone call to straighten things out if things get shady. Class system is big in the country.
Make friend with the right people and your good to go. And show people respect. Trust but verify everything just like you would any were else. Gr8 video.

Great tips! Thank you. When I was in China, I would wait until a local bought a good or services (in Chinese) with a local vendor at a local price and THEN (and only then) would I insist (in Chinese) for the same good at that local price!
Also, you are right -- no harm in fibbing for protection. Sometimes I would claim not to be American. Actually, you can have fun making up stories for each new encounter with someone nosey ("I'm a German executive working for Benz." or "I'm a Canadian missionary - do you believe in Jesus?").

It all depends on where you're living.. you're scaring people out... you do have to be smart especially when you're at a place you don't know but don't be too scared either because people can tell and that could get you into trouble easier than if you just enjoy it. I'm Dominican but I grew up in the States and I know something for sure. In DR, if you seem from somewhere else, they'll treat you like heaven and for the same reason you could be in danger. But only because you're in the streets. And yes, you could get charged more at the stores but, other than that foreigners are treated even better than citizens in DR quite often. You just have to get you some friends, socialice a bit because people are very nice and open... and trust me that person will tell you everything you need to know and you'll be just fine. Just make sure it is not a street boy, lol!

Can you explain about jacking up prices once they know you only speak English. I guess that happens only in low end places, they cant do that in supermarkets and mid to high level restaurants where prices are fixed unless they have menus for gringos.
Maybe you are talking about taxis but uber fixes that problem in SD.
