Thank you, Tom and Melissa, for sharing this. So many young cooks do not know how to make a pot roast. This is how I make mine and is a no fail meal if you follow these directions. If you and yours are folks who like the potatoes cooked with the roast, just wash well and chunk up in top of your roast. If you do not care for the peelings, just peel them then cut into chunks. If I am having many come eat and fellowship with me, I make mashed potatoes on the side and not in the roast whereas to stretch it a bit. I also like to thicken the broth from the roast for my gravy. Perhaps you can do a segment on how to make gravy from the broth for the ones who may not know how to do that. You folks are such a blessing to many. Thank you.
I also add potatoes and make gravy from the broth. Soooo delicious! But warning don't cook your potatoes as long as the roast if you're cooking a big roast like this one! Add them toward the end of the cooking time! An hour or so.

I cook my roast exactly like my granny cooked hers. I use a big dutch oven, put about 3-4 Tbs oil in the bottom, let it get hot, flour both sides of the roast + salt & pepper both sides. Brown on both sides well, about 5 minutes on each side. Remove from pot, put 3 good size onions (quartered) in the bottom then replace the roast. Add about 3-4 cups of water and put the lid on slightly cracked and cook on medium low for an hour. Add 2-2 1/2 lbs of potatoes peeled and cut in half then I add 2 lbs of cleaned carrots (because I love carrots) Salt and pepper each layer. I cook mine on top of my stove for 3-4 hours and a light simmer. Just try it once. So good. I may add a brown gravy mix sometimes.
I don’t like potatoes cooked with beef in beef stock. I think it gives the potatoes a weird color and flavor. I never cook my potatoes in with the pot roast. I always make mashed potatoes to go with it.

I love the fact that you plan ahead for leftovers. It's just my wife and I at home and we still both work. Leftovers carry me over for a good part of the week most of the. Awesome recipe!
I came across your channel by accident, and I’m so glad I did. I’ve already copied several recipes and tried a few too, all of which I absolutely love. This one I’m anxious to try because I’ve been cooking for over 50 years and I’ve never seared my veggies before roasting. This looks delicious and I can’t wait to try it. Add my name to the onion club! Love ‘em! Thank you and Melissa for your time and effort you put into your videos and for making them so simple to follow. ❤
I am so happy you cooked a roast & seared it on each side for only a minute. I've been cooking roast for eons & it's always great. I watched a person sear their roast 4 minutes on each side & all the way around on the ends. They showed their roast as perfect but it looked tough. No, thank you. 😊. Yes, olive oil on a roast is delicious! Thank you both so very much.
I cook my pot roast in a pressure cooker. I also put potatoes chopped in half. We also love our roast meal. I have onechild who was never into the potroast thing. But he would take the meat and shred it and put melted cheese on and make a beautiful sandwich out of it.😊
You have got to be our favorite food channel. You have great recipes and easy to follow instructions. We're trying your pot roast today and I can hardly wait. Many thanks to you and your wife.

That's a great way to prepare it. It can also save your oven space if you need it for another food (like cornbread or pie- just throwing out some ideas! 😊)
One variation my aunt made was to place a frozen tomato (homegrown, usually a beefsteak) on top of the roast. You talk about melt in your mouth good, as if the meat could even be more tender, the tomato acid really did break down the meat fiber, and added a wonderful flavor.
I cook my pot roast like this, but I also add garlic, celery and new potatoes. agree on herbs, however, Veggies a must, and yes cooked all day, and the meat falls apart, have a blessed day!
I LOVE a good pot roast like that. One of my favorites is having pulled roast sandwiches the next day. Some of that roast & mayo on a good sandwich bread is all I need. Wonderful! Thank you for showing the perfect way to cook it.😊
@@babasheeny3634 My favorite is Ezekiel bread from Whole Foods, if you like the grains & texture but with everything being so expensive lately we've been going with Artisan bread from Aldi's. They're very different but the Artisan bread is a good white bread imo.
OM Goodness! That looks delicious! That is the way I used to fix pot roast and we had it almost every Sunday. I don’t fix it much now because it’s just me and I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to eat it all. I could, however, make stew out of the leftovers. I think I’ll try that when it gets a little cooler here in Texas. Lol. God bless you and your precious wife! 🙏🏼❤️
I totally understand that it's different when you're cooking for just you. We ate a couple of meals from this and then made soup with the leftovers. Some of our kids enjoyed the soup, too! And goodness gracious food is way too expensive not to use every single bit of it now. Tom and I are so happy to have you watching our channel. Thank you very much.
I could almost taste that through my screen. Pot roast was a frequent dish my mom made. the nice thing is the versatility of a pot roast. Mom always added red wine, lots of garlic and potatoes. I just couldn't get enough. Family will be visiting next weekend and you just decided for me what we're having.
Whenever we would have a pot roast we would just add these ingredients to a pan , roast , carrots , potatoes and onions then we would cover the top and put it in the oven . Then when it was time to eat we would fix some brown gravy for it , and it was just really good ! At the time there was 4 of us and our roasts were always about this size and by the time everyone else got finished eating there would still be quite a bit left but by the time I got finished eating there wasn't hardly anything left 😊 I just loved it ! We're old fashion we never used spices or anything like that and that's just really how I like my food ! Most of the time when we had a roast it would be in the fall or winter . I know that I always loved it !
Good morning Tom, oh to see such delicious food getting prepared and the end result!!, oh my goodness, what a privilege to sit down and eat such food. So nutritious and delicious. There is just nothing that can beat home cooking, prepared with love and dedication. The recipe is not complicated the oven performed all the 'magic' and the end result is just perfection. Enjoy. Many blessings, take care. Kind regards, Elize.
I’m making this tomorrow using a sirloin tip roast. Hubby is a cattle farmer so we’re pretty spoiled. I usually have the chucks ground up but I asked for some chuck roasts with our new quarter.
I hate potroast from a crackpot. My mama (1933-2004) taught me your method about 50 years ago. It's still the best! I'm glad you're passing on her old ways. Keep up the good work! I love your videos.
My mother always cooked her pot roast in the oven. I do mine on top of the stove and add gravy master and potatoes as well. The gravy master helps the potatoes turn a nice brown.
My mom always did that. We have always made mashed potatoes to pair with this though. Either way, potatoes are great additions to the meal. Thank you so much for watching our channel.
My wife puts a cup of apple juice into a saucepan, and puts it on the stove to simmer. She reduces it to a syrup. We add this sometimes to the roast. The syrup is like an apple concentrate, and adds a special flavor to the roast.
This is my first time watching you two! I loved it. I love soup and hamburger. You two are so darn cute. So real, so humble. You are on my favorites list. I will be trying the potato soup, for sure. I am from Albuquerque NM
I cook a pot roast the way my grandmother made it. In a large pot. I sear it on both sides. I add a cup of water or beef broth. When it’s cooked to my liking I add onion’s carrots and potatoes. It’s delicious no matter if it’s cooked in the oven, or the stove top.
Nothing like a pot roast dinner!!! Oh it takes me way back to our family dinner table. We had dinner together every night, including Saturday pizza night. Even up until we moved out my parents rule was dinner at the table together.
We had a roast almost every Sunday. Sometimes it was a ham. But yes it was the meal I learned to cook on. My grandparents came for dinner or we all went to my uncle and aunts for dinner. Always a big dinner.
Tom and Melissa, we really are enjoying your videos and the Mrs. has been making many of your recipes with great success. We agree with all the comments listed In lieu of giving a Thumbs on each… Take care my friends…
There must be 1,001 ways to cook a nice thick chuck roast, but you sure did work my salivary glands over. I stuffed mine with garlic pods, marinated in a good red wine, bouquet garni (herbs)for hrs & cook in roasting bag. Have also thrown on a charcoal grill after marinating in either red wine or Italian dressing. Good stuff. Thank you for sharing your recipes. God bless.
My mom cooked her pot roast on top of the stove with carrots and potatoes. My mother-in-law cooked her pot roast in the oven. I have always cooked mine in the crockpot but am going to do it your way now.
Pot Roast is one of my favorite meals. I think they can be well prepared many ways but we do hope you will enjoy this recipe. Thanks for spending some of your Sunday afternoon with us.
Pot roast is one of my favorites. I make it all year, but I really look forward to it in the fall. One of my recipes is very similar to yours, but I cook mine completely on the stovetop or crockpot now. The browning you get from that dutch oven is the key, I think. it just isn't the same any other way. Thank you for this video. I'm really enjoying your channel!
What about taters? I also like diced tomatoes or tomatoe juice with the broth. It really helps tenderize the meat and adds a ton of flavor. I love buttermilk cornbread with it.
I salt and pepper my roast then I flour it before I put in my hot oil. After I brown it on all sides I cover with water and let it boil for an hour or so making sure water just covers my roast. After and hour or so I turn my heat down and let it boil on a low to med heat. About 45 minutes or so before serving I add my carrots, potatoes and onions and let those get tender ! Talk about some good eating! Yum yum
My Mother was from WV. She would cook her roast like this and she would put in whole onions. It is the best part. I have one in the freezer and will make later in the week.
This is to give high marks for your Old Fashioned Pot Roast recipe! I’ve made a ton of pot roasts in my 54-years of marriage, but none of them compared to this simple, flavorful, wonderful meal. I followed your recipe to the “T” and it was excellent, even with a 2-year old chuck roast from the freezer! My husband raved about it and he’s not big on pot roast. This one is now added to our rotation meals we really enjoy! Thank you ever so much for sharing!
Well I agree Tom, autumn is always a favorite time for me too in the kitchen...and I made pot roast last night McCormicks in the bag was easy for me and a 2# chuck roast and turned out great used yellow onions, peeled potatoes and carrots sans Lipton onion soup mix mom liked but I'm tired of that oniony taste so opted for the Dutch oven too. Was at Whole Foods last week and spotted a Swedish brand of cider and couldn't resist plus they had a limited edition pumpkin ice cream and it was so creamy like 31 Flavors. Just love all these warming goodies and look forward to baking with the falling temperatures. Stocking up on broths to make big pots of homemade soups can't take the salt in canned soups anymore. Love the gorgeousness of the fall season too. Cheryl
Hi Tom and Melissa, just wanted to say thanks. Cooked my first ever pot roast today.! Your simple but delicious recipe made it so much easier. The easy to follow instructions were a lifesaver. Keep up the good work and thanks again. 🙂
After we sear our meat, we put it in our pressure Insta pot. Then we put water over the roast and pour in a bottle of Kitchen Bouquet. Then we set the time for 1hr. Then the roast is fall apart tender. Then we cook our carrots for 15 min. in our kitchen bouquet water. It flavors ìt nicely. Yummy!😊

@@comesitatmytable9044 I really enjoy your recipes. I made the Lexingtonian dressing last week and made it again yesterday to share some with my son and daughter in law. It is soooooo good and you're right . . . you do just want to eat it over and over! 😂
I am making Pot Roast next weekend. Thank y'all for all the great recipes.
I love the fact that you plan ahead for leftovers. It's just my wife and I at home and we still both work. Leftovers carry me over for a good part of the week most of the. Awesome recipe!
We deliberately cook to have leftovers. We want to "cook once, eat twice!".
Thank you for watching our channel.
Love pot roast prepared this way. Carrots always tastes so good when cooked with a roast like this.
I always thought you had to get a brown seer on a roast. And then you scrape the pot for all the flavours
No matter how long you sear a chuck roast, if you cook it for 1 hour per pound at 275 with stock or broth and veggies, it will not be tough.
I cook my pot roast in a pressure cooker. I also put potatoes chopped in half. We also love our roast meal. I have onechild who was never into the potroast thing. But he would take the meat and shred it and put melted cheese on and make a beautiful sandwich out of it.😊
I'm not a big fan of beef or carrots ,except when it comes to pot roast. It's one of my favorite meals.😊 Yours looks delicious!
Thank you so much for watching. We really do appreciate it.
You have got to be our favorite food channel. You have great recipes and easy to follow instructions. We're trying your pot roast today and I can hardly wait. Many thanks to you and your wife.
I used to make it for my wife god bless her soul. Sometimes I put it in a slow cooker and cooked it all day long. Exactly the same except I used the slow cooker instead of the oven.. Good work guys
I have this on Sundays as a kid inn
Dolton.ill.so gooda i will make itthNks that was good to eat good on good times as a good memories.. as a kid a like to do or my daughter 28kate like to cook sunday as i did w my dad a mom a grandma a2 brother Sunday meals was great .a now i got a big family 3 kids a grandkids10 a they like when we st.pats day.w cirn beef a cabbagge a potatoes i lost my german larry 2yrs ago but i try to make this as im Irisha kids a even friends liked it
That beautiful pot roast is picture perfect! Yep... gonna have pot roast for supper👍🤠
Made this for Sunday dinner yesterday. Cooked in a roaster so as not to heat up the house. It was delicious too.
Looks good!!
It's one of my personal favorites! It's hard to beat this for a great meal.
I LOVE a good pot roast like that. One of my favorites is having pulled roast sandwiches the next day. Some of that roast & mayo on a good sandwich bread is all I need. Wonderful!
Thank you for showing the perfect way to cook it.😊
I love that too but lately cannot find good sandwich bread. Any suggestions?
You are welcome. We hope you can make one soon. We love it on a sandwich, too!
@@babasheeny3634 My favorite is Ezekiel bread from Whole Foods, if you like the grains & texture but with everything being so expensive lately we've been going with Artisan bread from Aldi's. They're very different but the Artisan bread is a good white bread imo.
@@deejo2 thank you!
@@babasheeny3634 😊
Tom that’s not fair eating that delicious roast in front of us!👩🏻🍳🍽️ Connie
I totally agree!
I love cooking with wine.
Excellent !! stay blessed.
Some bay leaf really adds to the flavor - great receipe!
We agree. Thank you so much for watching our channel.
My mom always cut onions a little smaller and added a bunch of cut up potatoes...it was always sooo good.
My Mom always put potatoes in her pot roast
Me too, and I make gravy only for my husband ( I have never known ANYONE who likes so much gravy on his food). I rarely eat it.
Looks soooo good! This is one of my favorite meals ever! My mouth is watering now!! Thanks, Tom and Melissa!! God bless! 💕🤗🙏🏻
My mouth is WATERING 🤤 This might be our after church meal next Sun. (if I can wait until then 😂).
I’m making this tomorrow using a sirloin tip roast. Hubby is a cattle farmer so we’re pretty spoiled. I usually have the chucks ground up but I asked for some chuck roasts with our new quarter.
French onion soup mix BEST seasoning out there
Look's yummy I cook my roast basically the same. I add mortgage different vegetables.
I hate potroast from a crackpot. My mama (1933-2004) taught me your method about 50 years ago. It's still the best! I'm glad you're passing on her old ways. Keep up the good work! I love your videos.
one of MY favorite meals too
My mother always cooked her pot roast in the oven.
That would be really nice and apple juice is a great tenderizer as well. Great tip! Thanks for sharing and for watching our channel.
This is my first time watching you two! I loved it. I love soup and hamburger. You two are so darn cute. So real, so humble. You are on my favorites list. I will be trying the potato soup, for sure. I am from Albuquerque NM
Welcome to the table! We are so glad to have you watching. We appreciate your super kind comment, also!
This Old Fashioned Pot Roast recipe looks so delicious 😋 Mr. Tom.
Thank you. Your words are very encouraging.
@comesitatmytable9044 I'm so glad. That's why I'm on here so that I can offer them.
Yummy, watching again!
I cook a pot roast the way my grandmother made it. In a large pot. I sear it on both sides. I add a cup of water or beef broth. When it’s cooked to my liking I add onion’s carrots and potatoes. It’s delicious no matter if it’s cooked in the oven, or the stove top.
I agree with you. Pot Roast is one of my all-time favorite foods! Thank you so much for watching our video. We really do appreciate it.
Nothing like a pot roast dinner!!! Oh it takes me way back to our family dinner table. We had dinner together every night, including Saturday pizza night. Even up until we moved out my parents rule was dinner at the table together.
Looks fantastic! Can you share what dutch oven you use?
We had a roast almost every Sunday. Sometimes it was a ham. But yes it was the meal I learned to cook on. My grandparents came for dinner or we all went to my uncle and aunts for dinner. Always a big dinner.
I love that tradition and wish we still had that in families more than we do. Thank you so much for watching our channel!
We always have mashed potatoes and make gravy from the broth. Next day we have hot beef sandwiches with all the leftovers.
Tom and Melissa, we really are enjoying your videos and the Mrs. has been making many of your recipes with great success. We agree with all the comments listed In lieu of giving a Thumbs on each… Take care my friends…
We are happy to hear that you've tried and enjoyed several recipes. Thank you so much for the nice comment. We really do appreciate it.
My family will enjoy this pot roast next Sunday after church.
Thank you for your kind words. We really do appreciate it. Have a wonderful evening!
What about taters? I also like diced tomatoes or tomatoe juice with the broth. It really helps tenderize the meat and adds a ton of flavor. I love buttermilk cornbread with it.
Love pot roast! Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome! We appreciate that you have watched our channel.
Looks just like my mom would make on a Sunday too. Yum!
Yum yum
I love making roasts on sundays as well 👌👌👌👌
It looks so good and I swear I could smell it through the screen!!! I like potatoes with mine as well as your veg choices.
You are a very good instructor
My Mother was from WV. She would cook her roast like this and she would put in whole onions. It is the best part. I have one in the freezer and will make later in the week.
I love a good pot roast too.
If my mother had leftover roast, she would make roast beef salad, similar to chicken salad. It was soooo good. Served on light bread or toast.
Wonderful! We loved reading this! Thank you so much for letting us know your family enjoyed it! That means a lot to us!
You 2 are absolutely wonderful, Thank you so much!
Then we put water over the roast and pour in a bottle
of Kitchen Bouquet. Then we set the time for 1hr. Then the roast is fall apart tender. Then we cook our carrots for 15 min. in our kitchen bouquet water. It flavors ìt nicely. Yummy!😊
Yum yum yum! My mom always put potatoes also and sometimes parsnips or turnips. Always absolutely delicious!
Looks delish. Yoi give very clear precise instructions. Thank you.
You are welcome. Thanks for joining us at the table.
Thank you Melissa for always providing the written recipe and the very important instructions. I ment to say this on your last video but missed it because the video went strait into this video. God Bless 💖💖👍👍💖💖
You're welcome. I'm glad you find it helpful. Thank you so much for watching our channel. We really appreciate it.
This is how I fix my pot roast in crockpot. Thank you for your video. 🦉🍂🍁
We love having a meal prepared in a crockpot so that's a great option. We really appreciate that you are watching our channel. It's nice to have you at the table with us.
I've just made this pot roast, it's actually still in the oven. Smells wonderful, I'll let you know how it turns out, I can hardly wait ❤😊
I cook my pot roast like you do but I also add celery and potatoes to mine also.
I just love watching both of you.
God bless you both!!!!
Love your channel! Thank you for the time that you put in to these recipes and making these videos.
