Adam, you are an earthly Slartibartfast. For those unfamiliar, He was a character in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Here is a quote from his Wikipidia entry: "Slartibartfast is a Magrathean and a designer of planets. His favourite part of the job is creating coastlines, the most notable of which are the fjords found on the coast of Norway on planet Earth, for which he won an award. "
*no doubt Slartibartfast also had an authentic replica of the Leg Lamp from a Christmas Story somewhere in his vast collection of Earth related/specific memorabilia*
Wow, thank you Adam for posting this! This brought back a very familiar memory. I too started a map back in high school, that would be the early 80's. We read the Hobbit and I sourced every map I could find. I worked on it a little bit over 10+ years and used calligraphy pens. Any mistakes could only be repaired with bleach. The charm is definitely in the imperfections, burnt edges and true weathering, as It has traveled many hundreds of miles. It did get scanned, just in case, but my original is sacred. As a side note, I even contacted the Tolkien estate to see if I could make copies and share them. I was turned down. This was just prior to the movies, so no wonder I was declined. Still have the letter, lol. Fun times!
ADAM: You need to make (or buy, but you'll have more fun making them) something called MAP WEIGHTS. These are used for various kinds of large documents, especially scrolls, but in my (limited) experience in rare-book collections, they're always called map weights. They consist of what amounts to bunches of lead shot stitched into barbell-shaped leather pillows. One side of these "pillows" is then covered in some extremely pure (i.e., totally untreated but durable) cloth that is also very soft; I believe certain kinds of raw silk and cotton are usual, but I'm no expert. You should, for a map like this LOTR map, have at least 4, but 6 would be better. You keep them in a box where they don't gather dust, and then you use them to weight anything like this map scroll. Honestly: this is a wonderful One Day Build, and you will I suspect thank me when (I hope) someone on your staff reads this and points it out to you, because you're going to have a whale of a time making these things -- and then using them.
Adam! In addition to everything else you do, you are also a digital cartographer, like I once was! I love it. I don't do this kind of work much anymore (but do still work with maps, just as a GIS instructor). I wish I could have seen the map monster up close. I have a small menagerie of digital sea creatures extracted from old Ortelius maps (fun for doing little graphic mashups or making your own antique maps!). Love your comments on the coastal vignette technique hiding rough work, can relate. Cheers.
Next time Adam heads to the UK, he should approach the Bodleian Library (Oxford), they have most of Tolkien's papers. Along with real world period maps of the real shire that Tolkien based the shire upon (Worcestershire/Gloucestershire/ Oxfordshire) They also have/had early printing presses in one of the basements that are still used.
The UK isn't real, it's a fictional land invented by C S Lewis for his Narnia children's stories. Lewis and Tolkien were room-mates at the university of Wisconsin where they studied business administration. While there, they decided to collaborate in inventing a mythical land with a rich history and complicated monarchy and that is how the idea of a "United Kingdom" was first formed.
I remember when this was first released on the RPF. I was able to print out a couple of copies and weathered them myself with coffee. I now have it proudly framed and hanging on my wall with Gandalfs' and Sarumans' staves proudly on each side.

Long ago in architectural drawing class I was taught to roll my drawings properly - face out. It works! And of course requires a cover sheet or drawing tube to protect the surface. And yep, had to draw a Middle Earth map of my own, now long gone, but replaced by another hand-drawn copy, a gift from my brother in law. I was touched. Great work! Good that you have fun with it.

Is that still around and available? I would love to get my hands on that. Thanks for the awesome content as always and keep up the good work
That map reminds me of the one I made of Britannia from the Ultima games. Similarly to Adam I looked over the versions of the maps from all the games to synthesize more details than any one of them would have. (in the end I decided mine was in between Ultima 6 and Ultima 7) Instead of hand placing the features by hand I wrote software to do hierarchical poisson disc distribution. To keep the text and the symbols looking consistent (as if they had been drawn with the same pen) I made a custom font then spent a lot of time positioning the labels including a lot of manual kerning. One thing I was particularly pleased with was instead of using a typical text halo (which has a very modern, drawn on a computer look) I removed , moved, or altered the features underneath to make a gap for the glyphs. That took a lot of time and meant that I couldn't go back and alter most of the labels but it was worth it.
I noticed that too, but in defense of that choice it was _far_ less over-used at the time (which is partially to blame for its subsequent popularity). It's still a rather lovely font, but our eyes have seen it so much now that it carries a lot of baggage external to the piece.

If you have a bunch of posters/wall hangings, but limited room in the cave, here's an idea: instead of putting them in storage, frame them and rig up a display rack (kind of like malls in the 1980s had for displaying posters) and have it mounted so one is always visible, with the others "flipped up" or otherwise out of sight. For "going the extra mile" effort, rig it so it auto-rotates the displayed poster each day.

I've loved the LOTR since long before any of the movies came out (even the animated ones), and one thing I particularly loved was the maps. I read the Fellowship of the Ring in paperback, and the map was so tiny and poorly printed that this is what led me to buy the trilogy in hardcover, with the large maps like this one at the end of the first two books, and the closer view of Gondor and Mordor at the end of The return of the King. I didn't have the skill, nor the funds, but I fantasized at the time, about making a large tapestry of the wider scale map, with the various paths followed by the members of the Fellowship traced out in different colors. I find it wonderful that these original maps were drawn by Christopher Tolkein, and their accuracy, when compared to the text, is phenomenal. Christopher, of course, went on to continue the (multi-volume) compiling of his father's work after J. R. R. died before completed an English 'translation' of The Silmarillion.
@@PaulMcCannWebBuilder It's been so long since I've seen it, and I don't own a copy, except in paperback. Thanks for giving me something to search for!
Oh! And I remember buying the hardcover Silmarillion when it came out, and the edge of the LoTR map fit it so well (part of Middle Earth goes undersea when the earth is changed at the end of the Second Age.) Mad skills of Christopher Tolkien.
I have to say I absolutely love magnoli props! I actually purchased a life size replica of the declaration of independence from them and the details are incredible!
Small aside, but I really loved your attention to the 'reveal' of the Middle-Earth map. Putting down weights, positioning for the overhead camera, opening all in frame. It made my heart sigh!
Adam you might take a look at Campaign Cartographer, which is map drawing software. I think it's possible to have a layer set to show an existing image, so it is possible to 'trace' a current map and make it look olde worlde.
Story time, Fellowship of the Ring was.the first movie me and my sister went to see alone. I was no more then 12 and we joined the back of this LONG queue outside the theater. We panicked thinking we wouldn't be able to get into the movie, but then someone comes out of the ticket booth and proclaims "Tickets for Snow Dogs 2 are Sold Out!"🤣. At this most of the line left, and we got our tickets. The movie blew us away and we have loved it ever since. So when Adam says "Like you I love Lord of the Rings" I feel like jes talking to me personally. Helps that I am also named Adam 😅
A while back I ordered a canvas Middle Earth map as well as the written written version of Red Book of Westmarch from Indy Magnoli. Can't wait to get them!
I would like to see a set of maps for Thomas Covenant. It was one of the series that really affected me after LOTR and Nine Princes of Avalon, The Amber Chronicles
Huge map fan - love your map! We printed one out like that of Westeros at work to follow the characters on their journey for Game of Thrones. I like a good visual reference. I hope you've been to New Zealand - yes? If not, you must go! Thanks for the show and tell.
Oh these are beautiful. Only last week I found a good and reasonably accurate graphic map of Middle Earth, which my husband cleaned up and embiggened. One trip to Officeworks later and I have a B0 B&W print on 80 gsm. I am stupidly going to do a combo of hand ink, hand embroidery and machine quilting on tea dyed linen fabric. Not going to lie, it’s a daunting project, but a worthy one. Love your channel. Not sure how the hell I missed this one, but glad I was told about it by said enabling husband 😂
Great LOTR map. I've seen the movies, but not 6 times. But I have read the LOTR books 6 times as well as the Hobbit, Silmarillion, Lost Tales, Unfinished Tales etc.
Adam, the Middle-earth map is beautiful and I hate to break it to you but I saw several typos/misspellings (the swamp south of the Dead Marshes should be "Nindalf" or "Wetwang", the mountains of Gondor should be the "Ered Nimrais," the ports over in Lindon should be "Forlond" and "Harlond", etc.). I apologize for being that guy but as a big Tolkien fan and former copy editor, those jumped out at me. Just something to be aware of if you ever update the file.
I'm sure the Ghostbusters thing looks really good and all but I'm not really into that lore, and don't really know the significance of that thing. The Middle Earth map on the other hand, is absolutely beautiful! I'm totally into LOTR and would love to have a map of Middle Earth like that! Amazing!
The trick to fitting more maps in than you have wall space for, is by keeping the excess in a map cabinet. This allows you to pull out a drawer with the map when you need it. The drawback caused by finding a location for a map cabinet, is that it takes up space, which you already had preciously little off.
I vote for either the pull down map idea, or one of those displays they use for posters in stores, basically a bunch of frames on hinges that you can flip through, like a big book attached to the wall
Would LOVE a copy of the file so I could print this AWESOME map! Could you create an exhibition of ALL your props and suits etc so we could visit, listen to videos of you showing how they were made and so on? Just an idea.
🤔 That Ghostbusters map, on a felt backed frame, with space for the letter - with the tube either on a mount, or hung underneath. Now that's a one day build...!
Make a double sided picture frame with a glass back panel as well, so you can hang it backwards to show off the letter and other thematic accoutrements.
I too love maps and especially Lord of the rings when there is a lot of extra detail and drawings not strictly map related. So , wanting the best I set out to make my own and have put it aside for 3 years when my house burned down but I still have the tracings I did on 8.5 by 11 inch paper so as to make a giant map on ticking cloth, which can support pencil portraits of some of the main characters around the edges and Seas.... Galadrial, Gandalf, Elrond, Bilbo and Frodo and of course a nod to Aragorn and Thoren and perhaps lastly Smaug, disguised as the iron mountains... the ideas never end.
A cool one day build would be to make a map rack that looks like it comes from an old archive in Gondor or something to store all the maps rolled up on!
Idk how to use illustrator either but that pen tool made me a lot of stickers in highschool lol we had a whole graphics department for printing any type of thing but everyone just wanted to cut vinyl stickers
Iron Crown Enterprises did a really excellent job taking the Tolkien map and adding more depth for the Middle-Earth Role Playing game (MERP). They also did a MERP world map (the Peter Fenlon Map) for the game.
I hope one day that Adam open's a "Maker Museum" that includes things from his collection and also has areas where you can come and try and make simple things.
You should make a map board that hangs on the rafters so you can push a button and it lowers down so you can look at it then you can raise it back up.... You can even hang maps on each side to save more space. 😁👍
I don’t have the ability or time to make something like this, but I just started making a couple picture frames to put the Middle Earth maps I got in the 75th Anniversary Edition of Lord of the Rings and I’m really excited to get them on the wall.
If something good came out of the series of rings of power, it is the map that is seen for a few moments between scenes. It has a little more color and gold details. I hope they share it with the community. I also have one in my room.
*i've spent a lot of time generating maps and illustrations using several ai art programs and i love the idea of having something of this quality printed out or hand transcribed on papyrus or on actual vellum using era authentic pigments*
The Ghost Busters map looks so cool. I was surprised to see cuneiform writing on paper, as in ancient times it was actually written on clay tablets in Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Hittite languages. The Middle-earth map is wonderful, I'm so envious! Good to see you in a video again, Mr. Savage, it has been a long time since I watched you on MythBusters, I really enjoyed and miss that show.
Very nice. I love maps like this, although I'm not inclined to buy a Middle Earth one. I have a Warhammer map though (given away free in Games Workshop's White Dwarf magazine many decades ago), and there are a few other Warhammer maps out there I'd like to buy. It is a bit of a problem ironing out creases and displaying them in a 7x6 box room though...
That map looks great! But what about a map that shows the lands of Beleriand and the rest of Arda? That kind of map is tough to find, and the ones I've found don't look good. I know it's a tough one to do to cannon scale as Tolkien never did a good map and his son Christopher only did a few maps. Mostly of just Middle Earth and Beleriand. There's so much story in just the mapping of Arda. Thanks for sharing your cool maps.
where can I buy that version of the middle earth map? Can I? I love how the old kingdoms are in a lighter font so you can literally see the history of middle earth
I once spent 15 hours hand drawing my own Middle Earth map with pencil and fountain pens (brown and red ink). I think mine is a little smaller than yours

Woaooow!
Anyone has an idea where to find the file Adam talks about?
i want to know it too
I have to say I absolutely love magnoli props! I actually purchased a life size replica of the declaration of independence from them and the details are incredible!
Keep it secret keep it safe. Nic Cage is on the prowl.
Ant: "For Frodo!"
Adam: "Go back to the abyss"
I love that background... what an inspiring workshop setup 👌 👏
This is such a beautiful map, would love to have it
8:00 "Just had (an ant) crawling across Middle Earth"
This is a plot point for one of the new movies, isn't it?
You did amazing work on The Lord of the Rings movies Adam, very nice to see someone send you that fantastic map.
Was it an ant or an Ent that walked across the Middle-earth map? 🤔
Stunning maps though! ❤️🔥
Small aside, but I really loved your attention to the 'reveal' of the Middle-Earth map. Putting down weights, positioning for the overhead camera, opening all in frame. It made my heart sigh!
Lord of the Rings. Love it! We need more LOTR builds. You should make Durin's bane.
I have a deep sympathy. I don't think I've ever known a single person who had enough "horizontal wall space".I never have.
Awesome work sir
A while back I ordered a canvas Middle Earth map as well as the written written version of Red Book of Westmarch from Indy Magnoli. Can't wait to get them!
I've never thought of getting a ruler tattoo before but you've got me considering it. Seems suitable for an architect too 🤔
I have one still and I love it!
I would like to see a set of maps for Thomas Covenant. It was one of the series that really affected me after LOTR and Nine Princes of Avalon, The Amber Chronicles
_Oh I do love maps_
That's a cool map of Middle-earth
I've got a map of Middle Earth from when the first film came out also a map of AnkhMorpork, might use them one day🤫😉😁
lol is a map of AnkhMorpork just covered in grease stains
Yes...
I love this man
Would LOVE a copy of the file so I could print this AWESOME map!
Can you imagine a map of Middle Earth done like that? 😗 Would be pwetty... And I made this comment a few seconds too soon! Another LOTR lover! 😄
Iron Crown Enterprises did a really excellent job taking the Tolkien map and adding more depth for the Middle-Earth Role Playing game (MERP). They also did a MERP world map (the Peter Fenlon Map) for the game.
Please add a link to the RPF in the description. I've searched but not found a functional link.
I hope one day that Adam open's a "Maker Museum" that includes things from his collection and also has areas where you can come and try and make simple things.
If you had a museum for all of your nerdy stuff, I would visit it.
You should make a map board that hangs on the rafters so you can push a button and it lowers down so you can look at it then you can raise it back up.... You can even hang maps on each side to save more space. 😁👍
Future project Idea.. A poster wall binder.. a giant flip book for framed posters!
Sorry, noob here. What is the RPF Adam refers to when discussing the LOTR map, and how can I access it to get a copy of Adam’s map?
I'm going to purchase one of your measuring tattoos however I would be very interested in a hemp version that would last a longer time
Want it!
I hope one day you have a yard sale. So many cool things would be in it.
I don’t have the ability or time to make something like this, but I just started making a couple picture frames to put the Middle Earth maps I got in the 75th Anniversary Edition of Lord of the Rings and I’m really excited to get them on the wall.
The Red Letter Media guys would love you!
I still have one of the "Time Bandits" maps that I think you were involved with.
LOTR is an amazing novel, and the trilogy movies are masterpieces. Adam, can you even IMAGINE the movies with anyone bit Viggo as Aragorn?
If something good came out of the series of rings of power, it is the map that is seen for a few moments between scenes. It has a little more color and gold details. I hope they share it with the community. I also have one in my room.
*i've spent a lot of time generating maps and illustrations using several ai art programs and i love the idea of having something of this quality printed out or hand transcribed on papyrus or on actual vellum using era authentic pigments*
As someone with Narsil tattooed on me, I can appreciate this!
You know how many maps of Middle Earth I made when I wasca kid. Quite a few. One was 4 feet by 4 feet.
I want one!
There were two kinds of papyrus shown in this video!
One good and one bad...
Can someone pass me the link for the map please? Is gorgeous!
I want that map of middle earth so so so bad 😮😮😮😮
where can I buy that version of the middle earth map? Can I? I love how the old kingdoms are in a lighter font so you can literally see the history of middle earth
I once spent 15 hours hand drawing my own Middle Earth map with pencil and fountain pens (brown and red ink). I think mine is a little smaller than yours
Does anyone have a link for the online map? Tried searching it to no avail.
I tried giving you a link but my post got deleted. Probably can't post links on youtube. I found it by searching "RPF asavage middle earth map" on google. The first result brings you to page 15 of Adam's original 2006 post. Page 19 has a working link.
