They make it easy to visualize and follow the interrelationships between the stories of the different ages. You are doing a great service to Tolkien demonstrating just how well he fleshed out his mythos. I feel like I'm studying the history of a real place. Great work, NotR!
Agreed. A common talking point I hear is how Tolkien took too long to make progress with his work and because of that he "only ever completed Lord of the Rings", but this channel is a good reminder of how deep he actually went into fleshing out his universe. There might be no full trilogies about each of these elements, but they sure dwarf the War of the Ring in terms of complexity.

I recommend "Journey of Frodo". This book contains many maps showing roads, ways, land heights, city, events occor places and dates. Sry for my English
These videos are great refresher courses for Tolkien fans. There is so much history and so many names. I'm having moments like "oh ya...Lindon, that was a cool place". I didn't know about the names for it's northern and southern regions. Thanks for making these awesome videos.
09:40 Strange how south of Harad there's almost nothing on the map. Either because there really is nothing of note except plains and deserts, or it's because the people making these maps just didn't know. Look at old maps from the 18th and 19th century of Africa: The coast and places like Egypt were well known, but everything south of the Sahara was just a massive white spot. Kind of a "here be dragons" vibe. I would guess that Tolkien drew inspiration from this.
I love to watch your videos in the afternoon while having a nice cup of coffee... so relaxing and nostalgic, it's like travelling to my childhood home town.
Found your page because Silmarillion was pretty heavy at first lol I needed a map lol but when I was done I found your page. You go good work man keep it up!
Man, I remember watching your videos about a year ago, you become from little youtuber to very sucsefull one, in a year, and your videos are even bigger and deeper, keep on dweling on Silmarilion ! Cheers
This is great! I always loved staring at these maps. Hearing what significance they hold in the history of Middle Earth is fascinating. Hope you do the Third Age soon.
I really hope we get to see Harad quite a bit in the Amazon show. I'd love to see more oliphants because they're awesome and it's an area of Middle Earth that we haven't seen explored at all. It would also provide great context for the actions of the Haradrim in the third age, as we'll see why they felt such hatred for Numenor and eventually Gondor. Great video as always!
The relationship between Harad and Numenor would be a very interesting one to see play out in the show! I'm hoping to see Numenor in it's glory days, then slowly descend into evil. Would make for a compelling relationship between the two realms.
One important event that I think affects interpretation of maps of Arda was the splitting of the flat world into a spherical world and an limited access land of the Valar. The maps usually shown still interpret Arda as flat, but by the time in which LOTR is set that would have been no longer true, which is why a special (hence magical) ship is needed to take Bilbo and Frodo to the now misnomered "west".
Here's an idea for future map videos. At 1:18 you talk about the distance between Himling and the coast of Lindon. You could take a scale length thingy that we see on the full scale map, and apply it according to the zoom of every still image with character bubbles. That way, we can always get a feeling of how big places can get when zoomed in. I know it'd be extra work but I feel like it'd be worth it! Thanks for the great content!
Thank you so much for making these videos! 20+ yrs after high school I am finally revisiting the Silmarilion, and I frequently feel lost. Your geography vids (among other works of yours) are very helpful! (Btw- Andy Serkis’s narration of The Silmarillion is awesome!)

Really great to see how far this channel has come, and how you're really churning out quality content. It's also nice to see you tying in Beleriand with the remnants of it still left in Middle Earth to provide a nice cohesive picture of how time passed. It's work like this that will hopefully consign that horrible map of Beleriand (which places it to the north of Middle Earth), finally and completely to the dust of history. Good job.
I listened to several other lord of the rings informative podcasts, and they all just seem like a cheap knockoff of this channel. You have consistently accurate information, and you present it interestingly, you keep your audience captivated, without overdoing or undergoing your presentation. Well done.
I think a movie or series about Khamul and Rhun would be amazing. So many things could be explored with the dwarves, wizards, and Sauron’s influence on an entire country and its people. I think it’d be epic
I remember reading about the Númenorian voyages which sailed further than the map we have here. They effectively navigated to seas in the far south and east, way beyond Umbar.
If I could travel to any period in Middle Earth's history, I would go to Númenor in the Second Age and try to prevent its corruption. Had Númenor never been corrupted or destroyed, it could have easily stopped Sauron in his tracks.
That image of Osgiliath at 12:35 catches me off guard every time that it is used, because that dome on the right is straight up the Duomo in Florence, Italy. I climbed that thing in Assassins Creed.

Really great videos and an excellent idea. If only you mentioned that with the Downfall of Numenor the south coast has also been affected greatly. Especially Pelargir and the surrounding area. It had in its early days been a city only a few miles away from the coast, but after the Downfall of Númenor the coast along the Bay of Belfalas had retreated a great distance and the city was left far inland. Just for that, I give the video 9 out of 10 :)
