This was once asked by an IISC professor to me. I was saying the wrong reasons like (R= row. l /A) and the usual reason for long pin. The professor said that was not the answer. I was baffled as I was sure of my answer. But then he explained exactly what you said. Sad to know that even recruiting ppl from companies dont know the actual reason.
Nice and clean. In India we have 3 male pins on connector and 3 female pins on power socket. But if u take Europe countries, instead of 3 male pins they would have 2 male pins and one female pin on connector. Connector is having different structure compared to ours.

Keep up. Good. U said if the size of the pin is big, the wire size also must be big, ofcourse u r right, strong logic. The size is bigger becoz not only to hold the plug from coming out of socket, but also to have greater contact between pin and hole. If phase and earth pin are same in size there is a chance that Earth Pin alone can have less/loose contact and phase is having strong contact. At this condition the full capacity current(incase) which is supplied to the device may not be able to get grounded properly due to ground pin less contact that occurred inside the socket and hence human safety is affected when we handle device. So this pin is designed bigger to avoid less contact than phase pin contact . More contact area does double confirmation that Ground pin contact area would definitely pass full load current that is brought by phase wire.

Contact resistance between earth plug and (Even the plug is not so tight fit) resistance between earth socket to earth plug should be ensured to be minimum. That is the reason for the bigger socket. Otherwise even smaller socket will work. Owner of the intangible benefit is you cannot wrongly plug it in (however this can be achieved by different method). The interviewer was correct. But that is a simplified answer.
Dont mislead the subscribers. The big and long pin is meant for safety only. Local suppliers may keep all the cross section of the wire same for cost cutting but when i open philips branded iron box, i could see earth wire slightly bigger than the hot wire. The big is meant to give low path to the leakage currents and also prevent wrong connection. The long is meant to connect the earth pin first to discharge the static caused by previous attempt.( here consider frequent users who plug and unplug the equipment frequently ) Leakage currents is the main culprit to safegaurd a person from a electric shock. if earth wire is broken, one can feel the shock when attempting to touch equipment like wetgrinder (when grinder in wet condition that is water spilled over the body) Cause of leakage current due to imperfect insulators aging of insulator that leaks more current when water spilled over the equipment. air gets ionised and leaks the current through chassis. all house hold motors have capacitors which frequently charges and discharges. when equipment is turned off, some capacitors discharges its energy through the windings but some requires a path to ground to discharge. All capacitors have dielectric which is not perfect insulator and it has leakage currents always( thats why DRAM in computer stores charges in terms of bit but due to leakage issue, it needs to be refreshed every 2s that affects the performance when compared to static RAM) You dont bother about foreigners. their literacy rate is different than us. Moreover, if wire is double insulated as per standard, then chances of leakage is zero, not required of third pin(reason for two pin) but for some mechanical support , they used to keep the third pin other wise it would come off. Kindly publish the content with utmost care and can also provide some standards and reference for your content.

First of all ,the Earth is safety device.this is three pin top design.there is earth point first going in the Power socket.after if any short circuit in this device suddenly got trip on the circuit breaker (ELCB or RCCB). This applies even when there is No power in the Extension Box. Similarly Extension Box are used in the abroad is designed to be earthing first.when we look at the three pin is equal. But Power socket design to be earthly first.
could you explain electrical vehicle usage less compare to petrol and diesel. we know fuel cost is high but why government or scientist not implement electric vehicle usage..
Hi bro length of the pin should be high so that the equipment or machine to be bonded or grounded first. Because bonding and grounding of machine usually done to prevent static charges or leakage currents to flow. Statics charges or improper ground causes current flow when they get the path. So it is mandatory to earth and bond all the machines, in oil industries and power industries, before starting or before commissioning.( Even Clamps also used in many places where oils unloading done from oil tankers) If the length is not enough or equal, then all the pins makes the contact at the same time. Incase of any damaged or poor connection or static charges will try to prefer the least path. ELCB, one of the common lighting DB protection, based leakage current which will trip the CB immediately it measures 30mA. If all pins are same size, then MCB will trip on short circuit. Short circuit usually causes an enormous current flow depends upon voltage levels. MCBs won't save the persons at work. Finally, It is for safety reasons that these pins are designed. If not providing safety, then there will be no use of this pin.
1. As I clearly said, there's no live supply, where you get the leakage from. Maybe for static discharge. But static charges are more to look up on electronic circuits only. 2. I said only on domestic appliances. On industries earthing will be handled very precisely. 3. ELCB will even work on live condition. While there's no easy path to earthing, how the supply will choose earthing as easy path.
@@engineeringfacts Thanks for your reply. You are correct bro. Let me clarify it *Stactic charges are present on every surface due to ambient stiuation and conditions. Examples: a tanker lorry ( that's why while unloading oil , lorries will be earthed ), Clothes, etc. Not only electronics. Depends upon the amount of charges and capacity of flow from the body, it will cause damages. Most of the oil station fire are due to static charges. In household appliances, Re-Fridge, washing machines, Electronics like TV, Sound system as you mentioned are the important things which will induces or carries the statics charges. Mainly STATIC charges will stay on the surface till it gets discharged. *ELCB are mainly designed to operate on above 30mA which is used to protect the persons. MCB are used to protect the system by isolating the fault and prevent the extension of fault. Now, if all pins are of same length and in case of poor or damaged connections, a huge circulating or short circuit current flows. If by mistake, any one operating the MCBs or ELCBs or the touching the damaged wire while switching the circuit, then they might involved in severe damage. In case , if the earth PIN is contacted first, then ELCB will be tripped with no time and not allow to turn on for sometime. Else , the total current will cause uncountable damages within few cycles, till MCB comes into picture and isolate the circuits. In every system, MCB and ELCB are used in series. First MCB , then ELCB. As you said , area of the pin makes sure that earth pin must be earthed. Length of the pin makes sure that the equipment should be earthed first and disconnected at last.
I have same doubt our appliances not only only a resistive type ...it also have energy storing elements due that there will be leakage current so that should grounded frst
just want to say, some of the three plug the center pin comes with plastic which you said for earth or ground, actually for safety there is open&close protection on all holders for kids, so the center pin will go first to open the lock in holders.

could you explain electrical vehicle usage less compare to petrol and diesel. we know fuel cost is high but why government or scientist not implement electric vehicle usage..

length of the pin should be high so that the equipment or machine to be bonded or grounded first. Because bonding and grounding of machine usually done to prevent static charges or leakage currents to flow.
Statics charges or improper ground causes current flow when they get the path. So it is mandatory to earth and bond all the machines, in oil industries and power industries, before starting or before commissioning.( Even Clamps also used in many places where oils unloading done from oil tankers)
If the length is not enough or equal, then all the pins makes the contact at the same time. Incase of any damaged or poor connection or static charges will try to prefer the least path.
ELCB, one of the common lighting DB protection, based leakage current which will trip the CB immediately it measures 30mA.
If all pins are same size, then MCB will trip on short circuit. Short circuit usually causes an enormous current flow depends upon voltage levels. MCBs won't save the persons at work.
Finally,
It is for safety reasons that these pins are designed. If not providing safety, then there will be no use of this pin.
1. As I clearly said, there's no live supply, where you get the leakage from. Maybe for static discharge. But static charges are more to look up on electronic circuits only.
2. I said only on domestic appliances. On industries earthing will be handled very precisely.
3. ELCB will even work on live condition. While there's no easy path to earthing, how the supply will choose earthing as easy path.

You are correct bro. Let me clarify it
*Stactic charges are present on every surface due to ambient stiuation and conditions. Examples: a tanker lorry ( that's why while unloading oil , lorries will be earthed ), Clothes, etc. Not only electronics.
Depends upon the amount of charges and capacity of flow from the body, it will cause damages. Most of the oil station fire are due to static charges.
In household appliances, Re-Fridge, washing machines, Electronics like TV, Sound system as you mentioned are the important things which will induces or carries the statics charges.
Mainly STATIC charges will stay on the surface till it gets discharged.
*ELCB are mainly designed to operate on above 30mA which is used to protect the persons.
MCB are used to protect the system by isolating the fault and prevent the extension of fault.
Now, if all pins are of same length and in case of poor or damaged connections, a huge circulating or short circuit current flows. If by mistake, any one operating the MCBs or ELCBs or the touching the damaged wire while switching the circuit, then they might involved in severe damage.
In case , if the earth PIN is contacted first, then ELCB will be tripped with no time and not allow to turn on for sometime.
Else , the total current will cause uncountable damages within few cycles, till MCB comes into picture and isolate the circuits.
In every system, MCB and ELCB are used in series. First MCB , then ELCB.
As you said , area of the pin makes sure that earth pin must be earthed.
Length of the pin makes sure that the equipment should be earthed first and disconnected at last.
I have same doubt our appliances not only only a resistive type ...it also have energy storing elements due that there will be leakage current so that should grounded frst
just want to say, some of the three plug the center pin comes with plastic which you said for earth or ground, actually for safety there is open&close protection on all holders for kids, so the center pin will go first to open the lock in holders.
