Hope they never get tired of playing it. Should be the theme song to all travel in the outback. I can't travel, but to this American, this is the National Song Of Australia.
This song came out when I lived in Sydney back in the 1980’s. I still remember where I was and what I did when I hear this song. I remember dancing in the living room with my flatmate. Where are you now?
This song has a special place in my garden of memories. 40 years on, it's ageless! Used to live Down Under when I was a kid in the 80's, I have now settled in the south of France for 27 years and when I hit the road, I love listening to and sharing this song with my georgeous little daughter and ...she loves the bass line to it! Of course! Priceless! Being a teacher in English as well, I have even made my pupils listened to it! They couldn't have given a sh... But I enjoyed the moment so much!
What a great band they are. This really takes me back to great times........this from a Pom in New Zealand!!! Utterly brilliant!! The land of my convict 5x great aunt Mary.. This song connects me. And THAT drumming.... like the beating heart of a nation. I wish we had this in New Zealand.
I remember this song because of the movie Young Einstein lol ever since then I'm a fan of this rock pop group! Aussie music rules especially from the 1980's and 90's!
I first this song back in September 1982 and straight away I was transfixed to the sound and lyrical content of this classic song at a time I had new neighbors living next door and who were they? It was Mum Shirl (god bless her lovely soul) and a few Koori aboriginal elders and the lyrics “are you gonna let them take you over that way” still still sticks with me to this very day. A timeless Aussie classic.
I hear this and I can only think why is this not our national anthem. i never ever felt more like a aussie in music then this song. the defence forces should have this played at every camp to open the hearts and love for this country
absolutely a rock band! I said it for years and the other music journalists who thought they were too cool for pop music missed some really great shows because they just didn't bother to see Icehouse play. Now I live on the other side of the world and haven't been in Australia for nearly 9 years, this song touches me even more whenever I play it to friends here in Egypt.
I was in my early teens in New Zealand when this song was on high rotate and really didn't think much of it. It was background noise. Now I love it and I really like this version. Drummers have come a long way since then - so metronomic but still organic sounding. I am so old!
I write this before the guitar solo that ruined everything. This song is cinematic - it needs no flashes of virtuosity to elevate it. The song stands on its own without fucking rock solos.
Would make a lovely Australian National Anthem. Add some Didgeridoos would be perfect. Love this song!!!!!!! I would love to hear this in the local Aboriginal native language. It's a beautiful song. Goosebumps and tears everytime I hear it. A classic masterpiece. Well done to these amazing musicians. Yes it's one of these songs you know straight away on that first note!
Here is an Official Remix/New version that was done with Iva Davies and a heap of other people, and it features Aboriginal People performing with vocalising and singing part of the song in their language and a didgeridoo throughout... Awesome! I would play this on my way into Uluru for sunrise with my passengers. Really set the mood... ruclips.net/video/XPPl1obZ29c/видео.html
Beautiful, spiritual, connect- you-to-the-earth words and music arrangement. Been following John Farnham on youtube for just over a year which has led me to other aussie artistes I'd never heard of . Love this song, play it frequently. Apr'24. UK. E❤
Man, Flowers is the BEST name for a band. Also, your songwriting is second to none. It's fantastic, catchy, hooky, epic and unknowable in that way man searches for his maker and wants a relationship with him. I'm not a Christian btw.
I know what you mean, really great songs can make yer eyes water, hair stand up and lump in yer throat. I am not a religious person either or drug user, but some music is just THAT GOOD!
What Paul Wheeler does on the toms is genius. Originally it's a bass line on the chorus and Paul transfers those lines to the toms. Shame the camera didn't film that part but still it's awesome to hear them every time.
This performance makes me proud of Australia, and I'm not even Australian!
should become the official national anthem of the land down under! Great song, great version.
It is to me, & always will be. G.S.L
Sit at Heathrow waiting to come home. Every Aussie in the place is singing and crying.

This song came out when I lived in Sydney back in the 1980’s. I still remember where I was and what I did when I hear this song. I remember dancing in the living room with my flatmate. Where are you now?

In my top five bands of all time.
Icehouse's "Great southern Land" for Sydney Australia and U2's "One tree hill" for Auckland New Zealand !!! BOOM !!!
What Paul Wheeler does on the toms is genius. Originally it's a bass line on the chorus and Paul transfers those lines to the toms. Shame the camera didn't film that part but still it's awesome to hear them every time.
Kaleiddmode you are so right 👍🏼
Love the drummer. Absolute legend!
It must be a human drumming machine! Great timing! This man is a wizzard on the drums.
@@haraldmiller4894 Jonathon "Sugarfoot" Moffat would be proud

I thought Electric Blue and Crazy were hits for Icehouse in the US in the late 80s. Cheers from Oz.
