The funniest part about this is just how much easier it looks with save states in the beginning, BEFORE IMMEDIATELY becoming hard as balls again.
This game is actually not that bad difficulty wise, unlike the NES game. It does have the issue of needing to replay the game (NG+) and keep a certain (sucky) sub-item for a lot of the areas s that you can beat the final boss with it which will make those areas of the game a lot harder.
@@Nicholas_Steel Yeah, I "beat the game" a few times, meaning I beat level 7 and quit soon after the "replay the whole game and get the worst weapon while doing so" part.

Yes, Dan, you just described this whole game. When I beat it I basically had to memorize every move I made. Exactly where to stand and when. Exactly how many times to attack. it's basically the SHMUP of platformers. A specific kind of difficulty for a specific kind of player.
Omg, I remember this game! This was literally one of the hardest games I've ever tried to beat, and I only got like 7/8ths of the way through!
Never underestimate the power of Save States to turn a 7 hour game into a 30 minute one.
“Ep1” in the tags tells me it’s gonna be a liiiiittle bit longer than a 30 min one 😉 I’m stoked!

It's always a wonderful thing when someone gives high praise to something lesser known that is your absolute favorite. Gargoyle's Quest/Demon's Crest is such a great series. Though he forgot one, Gargoyle's Quest 2 on the NES is great too.
The bit starting at 28:20 truly killed me. The fucking music loop in the background combined with Arin's WOOPS and Dan's "you didn't." Lmao
I love that Arin says they are going to finish this on the next episode. I guess he doesn't know that you have to literally finish this game twice in a row to get the true ending.

Whenever Dan feels like they've played a game together on Grumps, he should really lean into it more because they've for sure played this before together on Grumps.

Holy shit! I was kinda surprised when you said you'd be using save states, but I'm actually really glad you are. It makes the game less frustrating but also MORE frustrating!
I love how Dan immediately understands and uses Save states correctly, by constantly updating the state at most points of rest versus Arin who just keeps going and has to repeat such longer segments
The only way to know you're using save states "correctly" is if you can beat the game legitimately right after beating it with save states. That's a good litmus test. If you save state every 0.5 seconds of gameplay, you learn pretty much nothing about the game.

@@Bluesine_R I dont think save states are used much for improving performance. I've only seen them used to suspend and return to gameplay if unable to save, or to reattempt a section thats too difficult or time consuming to attempt legitimately again and again. It'd be cool to actually break it down and see if their use of save states reduces as they play though, but they're both kind bad at this one lol

Well you have to forgive them, by their new ridiculous episode names and thumbnails you can't really tell what they are even playing anymore, so how should they remember? Its not like they can look it up in a few seconds.
And I think Dan was pretty sure about his former experience with this game on the show, but he is so agreeable with his boss, that he just took Almonds word for fact.

Key to the double jump is when to use it. Like the trouble on the pillars on the lava board, just hit the jump button again right away

My bro beat SNES version once, but only took him two days. I feel like getting occasional weapon upgrades would make this game way easier?
@@MoeChicken I don’t remember the SNES one too well, but the NES one technically gives you as many tries as you want… eventually you learn every hidden armor and can take those demons out in your sleep lol

I am so hyped the boys are playing one of my fav games and really going for the ending! Also more hyped that Arin acknowledges Gargoyles Quest and Demons Crest as being two awesome games that they should absolutely play on the show.

I have this on the SNES, it is definitely super difficult. I couldn't get further than the ghost ship back in the day when i was a kid. It took me until I was in my late 20s to beat it.
Its reverse for me. I beat it multiple times when i was a kid. Can’t do it no more)

Bow, knife and lance are all good weapons everything else is horrible I'd rather have the knife or bow over the lance though
@@7dogguy Bow is an easy number one spot, especially if you keep the gold armour and keep charging. Than knife and than lance.
Oh man, a friend of mine and I challenged this one every now and then for eight years. I came within a hair's breadth of beating it (in the second run against the final boss required to get the ending,) when my dad walked in and tripped over the controller, resetting the game.
My friend beat it in college on emulator using save states, but I never did. It just wasn't the same that way.
This game's music is burned into my memory.
14:30 look at "Mobility in Medieval Plate Armor", you can move pretty well in armor, but you need to train for that shit.

You can run fine in full plate. Properly fitted full plate has great mobility. There is even a dude that runs military obstacle courses in the stuff.
The Videogame Boy is confidently wrong once again
I believe the misconception from most people comes from the full plate jousting armor that was too heavy and restricted movement to ludicrous levels, as opposed to the foot soldiers plate mail which was made to move around in. I only learned they were two different armors recently.

I had this as a kid. The terrain deformation was hella awesome. I really enjoyed all the secret chests, such as the one right in the VERY BEGINNING. I also remember at first being totally unable to get past the first rock column because I didn't know you could double jump.
I only every made it to just past the spiraling tower section.
Watching an LP later, finding out that the gimmick is "you have to replay the whole thing again" REALLY SUCKS. At least they could have made you play it backwards, or the world changes the second time through.
Wow, forgot how much a beast Dan is at retro games. Did it kill anyone else at the end when Arin save-stated after just standing in the level for a good chunk of his time limit? 😂
So stoked for this. I only ever beat it the first time through (without the special amulet power up or whatever). Didn’t have the heart to go all the way through it a second time with the item. And that was *with* save states! In fact, first time on the final boss I accidentally save stated myself into running out of time and ended up needing to replay the whole level and focus on precision/speed. Can’t wait to see all these, fond memories of Arin solo and even that time they played it together that they sort of forgot 🥰
I did get through the three Gargoyle’s Quest games (there’s one on NES Arin forgot) which I found significantly easier and were also fantastic, like he said.
One of my favorite things ever is when arin is telling dan how good he is at a game and then instantly messes up and does the long “whoooops” 😂

Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead was in the minority on finding the challenge proper. He opined it "relies far too heavily on cheap tricks and blatantly unfair game mechanics to turn an otherwise pleasant platformer into *an exercise in cruel frustration*".
For some reason, I didn't get this video but got part 2 today. Looks like I'm spending a good chunk of my day watching someone else suffer and (presumably) beat something I could never in a million years beat!

Man this brings me back. I played this game SO many heckin' times trying to beat it on the oddly named "professional" difficulty that the entire game is encoded into my muscle memory at this point. It's weird that I remember it better than things that have happened recently.
All chest spawns in this game are predetermined and activated by standing or jumping in the right places, all chest loot is obtained in a specific order (weapon, green armor, gold armor, wizard, weapon, shield(?), fairy (iirc))Using this info, you can build up to the gold armor really quickly. In fact, all enemies and projectile spawns are determined by player location, it’s the same kind of randomization that Super Mario Maker uses iirc.

I'm sure you've already filmed the next episode, but each weapon has its own magic version and charge attack, just like the dahgurz turn into spears and you launch a dragon.
Apparently the Torch and Scythe's magic versions and charge attacks a pretty sweet.

I REALLY hope they play demon's crest some time in the future. So glad Arin loves it and it would make for a perfect Ghoul Grumps game, and it would be awesome to show Dan that game. So much amazing, god tier art and music in that game, it's so fucking rad
