Starlink and t-mobile just signed a deal to work with the next gen satellites to connect your phone to be able to text and call eventually but is probably 2 years away from being fully reliable
Now that would probably cover some gaps for sure.
You can actually share your location with friends and family. And I bet they will keep expanding the service in the next years
Thanks for that info. Ideas for Christmas gifts :). Do you have a video on how to use your mapping app? I purchased it, but need a little guidance.
Michael, you nailed it. 👍 Thanks for the video.
I’m not sure if Starlink will be overly helpful for hikers, trail runners, bikers, motorcyclists. I think those users will rely on garmin (or similar) for many more years due to its form factor and battery life. It is always nice to have multiple options though in the worst case or emergency situations when you are not prepared. I still usually pack my iPhone with me and pair it with my inReach so it wouldn’t hurt to have the emergency backup option in the iPhone too.
Agreed!
Absolutely!
Starlink is supper cool. But you need a vehicle to tote it around. And you need to be stationary. Awesome for base camp.
But if you are hiking out from camp or just hiking in general. Or want to be on the move and have real-time info inReach is the way to go.
My 66i paired with my phone is always with me.
A weBoost is probably just as effective as the new iPhone 14 feature.
It seems I need to go further and further out every year to avoid service. I camped in the same spot last year and did not have service. This year I had two bars. No weBoost no inReach needed. A little sad. 😢
Always look forward to your videos always helpful and interesting. Looking forward to watching your Moab trip videos thanks for reading my comment.
I'm not sure Starlink obsoletes Garmin, you still have to setup Starlink. Garmin can be used while moving and in an emergency.
Let’s hope Garmin’s price will improve.
This is a rather intriguing move by Apple and one that should be commended. When they announced their satellite feature, I was kind of hoping that it WOULD make devices like the Garmin obsolete. I think Apple is dipping their toe in the water to see if there is a market for iPhones to become a replacement device to Garmin or at least, compete with it. Personally, I like this idea. I've thought about getting a Garmin or Zoleo for a while now but I just cannot justify the price of ANOTHER device and ANOTHER plan for how little I go off-grid. If I could have my iPhone BECOME a Garmin-type device when I do go off-grid, meaning Apple either adopts/copies what Garmin already does or develops their own systems, then I could see this as a major win for Apple. Alternatively, Apple buys Garmin outright and just integrates Garmin systems into a new service.
Either way, the next few years is going to be very interesting.
As for Starlink...I get it. You have full internet access while off-grid but doesnt that defeat the purpose of going off-grid in the first place? If you have kids, sure, they can watch Netflix etc... while you enjoy the great outdoors but isnt the whole point of Overlanding/Camping/Hiking etc. is to GET OFFLINE anyways? Again, I see the benefits but it's also defeating the purpose of it.
Your iphones or apple watches battery wont last long thats the major problem. Also I would never bring my iphone 14 pro to the woods, it would 100% get broken.
I can see some quick movements in Satellite integration with phones in the next 2-3 years, but for now the Garmin goes on every trip, it’s a must have item.
Interesting times ahead
I think when it comes to emergency communication, a dedicated device to me makes sense. The dedicated device does exactly what it is designed to do.
Hey, love you vids.
Does the app work in Australia? Cheers
It does!
The partnership between Starlink and T-Mobile is where the tech is going. The fact that existing phones on T-Mobile's network will be able to connect to Starlink shows that the tech is already there. My guess is that Apple has known about the new system for a while and this is just the updating the hardware in preparation for the rollout next year. I am a big fan and currently carry a Zoleo, offers live tracking, two way messaging and simple check-ins.
When your life depends on it, go with what is proven to work reliably.Currently Starlink is a nice 'I want that' and needs set up time to use. For now I'll stick with my Garmin and first-aid kit. The smart phone is to operate either GAIA or Overland Bound app or take photographs. Before I get the Starlink or upgrade my phone to iPhone 14, I'll get a nice digital camera so I don't have to unmount and remount my phone every time I want to take a picture when overloading while using the Overland Bound app.
I think I'll stay with Garmin, Apple is a satellite technology is not there yet.
I wouldn't mind having Garmin getting into the cell game since Starlink and t-mobile just hooked up.
Thanks Michael for info on iPhone sat. I still don’t see the Garmin going obsolete by starlink for those of us who carry while hiking, biking, fishing….unless Starlink becomes pocket size and is always on.
My thoughts exactly. It's kinda hard to fit Starlink in your pocket while hiking.
No one ever thought you’d have more technology than the first few spaceships in your pocket either….yet here we are.
It doesn’t replace Garmin…yet…until a company like Apple buys or merges with Garmin. Either way, it’s really cool to see all of this tech evolve.
Apple doesn’t need to buy Garmin they don’t have any intellectual property. They send data to a satellite network which gets relayed back down to ground stations an delivered. There’s nothing special about what they do. Satellite communications was only a niche thing because it was so expensive.
Yep, most likely acquire. Apple has no need to merge, they have way more money than Garmin.
Apple may not have individually, but T-Mobile + starlink + iPhone 14 did!! (Once T-Mobile and starlink turn on the satellite messaging that is)
Yay!
Give it time, they are just entering.
Only reason many people carry garmins is for the safety in case they do need to reach emergency services. I for one only need it for that emergency situation. No more need for the garmin if the iPhone 14 can do that. One less device to worry about
No two way comms though, if your comfortable with that, but, for now. I’m sure Apple will keep working on it.
@@OverlandBound but I see your point, you like to check in with your family so they’re aware you’re doing well and also give them your coordinates. That’s a big feature that a lot of people need
Garmin is annoying with the subscription stuff etc, haven't even bothered to set mine up yet. If it was included with the device it would be great
This is a direct shot at Garmin and Garmin should be worried. I own an InReach mini for hiking and camping. When I first got it I thought it was a joke. The interface is terrible the software integration with smartphones is terrible. They’ve had years to develop it but they stood idly by because there wasn’t much competition.
Enter Apple. You will most likely see other smartphone manufacturers enter this market like Samsung.
If Garmin was smart they would have bought companies like All Trails and integrated it with their hardware to build a ecosystem. Remember when Garmin and TomTom would sell in car GPS units and sell you map updates?
Fast forward to today they’re gone. Integrated into your smartphone for free.
The primary purpose of the InReach Mini is for emergencies and there is also a delay when sending data from your mini if you’re under tree cover or there are clouds.
Apple will continue to iterate over this feature. Garmin squandered the lead time it had. Keep in mind Garmin does not own its own Satellite network it rents time.
Garmin is going to be obsolete in 2 years
Can't carry Starlink with you on a hike or if you decide to ride your mountain bike.
I think that is changing with the TMobile agreement with starlink.
Maybe Garmin will have to start making phones
Important to note How many people carry Garmin in the normal course of their life and how many carry I Phones.
I think the star link is cool but if you have an emergency and it's not set up it could take 10 minutes to get running but if you have one of the satellite communication devices it would be faster
🍻
Second!
Third!
I don't see why Apple or other are adding sat tech for less than 1% or 1/2 % of phone users. we don't evem have cell signal at our farm so I think they are doing this just a a buzz word/ marketing thing... gimick at best.. Stick with Garmin
Second
Just wait until Elon Musk comes out with his cell phone its going to take over the cell phone business
First
This is just a first step for Apple. Eventually Apple will have their own satellites and own their own service. They don't want to be in business with cell providers anymore. Just like they left Intel in the dirt and started making their own computer chips. Services are a huge money maker for Apple now, more than hardware. They want to own the skies next.
I don’t think Apple will launch their satellites 🛰 anytime soon if not never
@@TrailRunn4r "not never" is a double negative and cancels itself out. Anyway, we'll see. I've marked this comment and will revisit it in a few years.
@@ZachBrimhall I see you have a lot of time on your hands, awesome. Thanks for the grammar lesson.
@@TrailRunn4r from my understanding they kind of already are as part of the contract with the satellite company they are using, apple will directly be funding something like 70+ satellites.
@@davidcarrico3385 yes but paying someone to do it is different from engineering and building your own
The Garmin is old tech. The new Apple Watch and iPhone is the beginning of this old technology being superseded. This is the Blackberry argument.
I think I'll stay with Garmin, Apple is a satellite technology is not there yet.
