You pull beech fungus from dead beech trees. It grows saucer shaped and is quite woody. You need to bang it to get it off. Next break it with a hammer or saw, into small pieces and keep it dry in a tin or box. Light it at the entrance to your tent or van, on a plate or saucer. It will smolder for hours making a smoke which repels mosquitoes, midges and anything else that flies. And it's free

Great to hear it works ok as picked up one of the Smoking Midge before I got the Campervan (and well before I started our RUclips channel) as saw it recommended and watched the videos - the theory seemed sound and looked like it would work so fantastic to hear you’ve had some success with it. As you’ve found you can get mixed results with sprays etc or if you’ve missed a patch you get got there 😄🦟
Must remember to pack it for Scotland 🏴

Thank you both, it's amazing what you buy and don't use straight away but always good to have for future, we do that all the time too 🥰 It was really noticeable when trying to inflate the kayak, they were swarming everywhere then we lit the smokin midge and they literally all disappeared 😂 Have a lovely weekend 😁

Just a bit of fun, but how do you pronounce your mates name. The spelling 'Midge' is actually pronounced 'Midgee'. So the guy in Ultravox should really be referred to as Midgee Ure. I did email him but he never got back to me :) .... Ken (The Smokin' Midge).

Smokin ! Great but unusual solution for a midge attack. We left Altnaharra when the midges came (yes I know we are weaklings) but we remembered being eaten alive by mozzies in Yosemite Valley in 1996 and still have nightmares. When we were kids they used to give us whisky at school. If you drink enough the midges stay away.

Hi Iain and Caroline (and Mollie the Collie). Thank you so much for the review. It was a lovely surprise when I did my usual search for anyone talking about Midges. I did design it to be worn on your arm as you wander about but it turns out it does work very well sitting on the table in front of you while you have a drink or food. I was driving the support car last year, for my friend who was doing a charity cycle of the NC500. We arrived at the Old Inn at Gairloch on a lovely summer evening. We thought it was shut as we couldn't see anyone sitting outside. When we opened the door to the pub it was absolutely packed as the Midges were bad outside. We got our drinks and happily sat outside for about an hour with the Smokin' Midge sitting on the table in front of us, midge free. I look forward to following your videos in the future. Awww molly the collie! My dog molly was a collie passed away last year at the ripe old age of 21, still miss her today, need to purchase these I fish and being from Scotland the midges are wild 😅

Hi Alan that's a really good idea, it does get quite hot but not enough to burn your arm through a t-shirt so there should not be any issues hanging it by the door, will give it a try next time we need it, thank you 😁

Can you use it inside the van?
Hi Ed, wouldn't advise using in the van as it does create smoke, more than a candle and this is the midge repellent so would only use it outdoors.
Best way to avoid midges is don't go where they are!!!
