  • We head off for a weekend in the Peak District. It doesn't go quite as planned when the NASTY side of van life knocks on our door.
How would handle a situation like this?
Van life in the Peak District is great, surrounded by amazing views and lovely little towns and villages to visit. We had a lovely time apart from the knock.

Let us know how you would have handled the situation? I try to handle things differently most of the time. My guard was already up after the Wife had confronted Maximus with the dog - He doesn't comprehend half of the things she was saying and definitely didn't know how to reply. That upset him to start off with. Then once the guy bounced up to the window like he did and the right into my face I found it hard to keep my composure. I asked him normally twice to move back, Maximus was scared behind me and when he wouldn't move My voice changed. You can hear it break a little as the adrenalin kicks in as I enter fight or flight mode.
Editing this was very hard to be honest, it turned my stomach. There was a lot more to the confrontation but it would upset Maximus if I included it all. They would move away, they wouldn't leave. I kept trying to back them up away from the van and Maximus. In the end Michelle came out as well.
I don't understand why people have to be like that...
Please let us know your thought below?

I would have done the same and moved on afterwards.
Just ruins it all. People are vile and shouldn't behave like that. However, they do. Hopefully, you'll not be put off by that experience, guys.
Looks like you had a lovely time regardless. Well done

Yes that was awful with your family there. If you go to north Wales, things can in my experience take an even nastier turn and I'd recommend avoiding the place.
I was on Anglesey within the last couple of years, alone and fishing a night tide, and could hear some banging and shouting in the car park.
Got into the car park as they were driving away. Couldn't get the reg number and it was dark so I couldn't even tell what sort of car it was.
I got a broken front windscreen, dents down the side and trim torn off the back. Well over £1000 of damage.
Over the years we spent thousands in Wales on holidays with the kids. After that experience I'll never spend another coin there and neither do any of our friends and relatives. I assume that counts as a win for the Welsh.
It has to be said, the explosion of van ownership and "wild camping" this last year or two has changed things for the worse, and certainly in Wales its probably safer for visitors to avoid isolated places. If indeed there is still anywhere left without height bars.

    • @traveling-taylors
      @traveling-taylors  5 месяцев назад +12

Sorry to hear you had that experience, it is a sad world we live in when people think it's okay to do that to someone else.
We love Wales and have spent much of our time away in various parts. In a recent trip ( Our first in the Van to Wales) we didn't have any problems. I had read a lot about Anglesey and although we visited during the day - we made the decision to not stay the night.
We stayed a couple of nights on Llanwrst library carpark, once on the way in and again on the way back out. Llanwrst and the surrounding area are some of our favourite spots. It does look like every where has become no overnight now in and around Snowdonia. The vlog is to come but we looked for spots in Wales that it seems acceptable and there was still plenty of space. We didn't feel like having the confrontation in a wild spot.
Thanks for watching and commenting :-)

Thanks Terry, we still had a great time - it took a while to settle and reassure Maximus that night that he hadn't done anything wrong and they were just not nice people. With his developmental delay he has the social understanding of a 3-4 year old, so he need support and reassurance. This is the thing with disabilities that can't be seen, people just don't understand. Thankfully he woke up happy and the neighbours we had were lovely with him and let him ask his 100's of questions (usually the same ones over again). They let him explore their van and that helped restore his confidence.
He has been away again since and Loves his van - he is looking forward to heading north in search of snow after Christmas :-)

I think you handled very well telling him it was escalating and he had to move out of your personal space. You were defending your wife and child against an intimidation. I think it is very normal to have those emotions kick in. After all, you chose to stand your ground and not pick a fight but move. That set a good example if you ask me.

Ive dealt with these types before, best thing to do is to open the door as hard and fast as you can whilst they are stood there (use your foot to create momentum) they usual end up on the floor at which point you can jump out and determine whether or not further force is required to protect yourself and your family from potential harm..... if someone comes banging on your van in the night, deal first and ask questions later..

New subscriber and van dweller. As a doorman of 22 years experience.. In no way did I see you losing your cool. I thought it was a measured response setting clear boundaries to protect your family and your personal space from an aggressor..simple. Looking forward to checking out your back catalogue and new travels :) Namaste.

Thank you for you comment and the benefit of your experience. I felt the same when he folded his arms and that's why I continued to attempt to make space between him and my boy who was sat right behind me. I feel like I did loose my cool a little when the adrenaline kicked in, I try to show Maximus a way with words. He is on the Autistic Spectrum and has developmental delay and anxiety. His emotional develop meant is around 4 years old, even though he looks like a "neurotypical" boy things can effect him.
It was definitely a balance of trying to give a measured response and trying to show Maximus the right way. In that I definitely feel I lost my cool a little.

My favourite site in the peaks is the one next to the top of Stanage Edge on the road from Ringinglow on the back road to Hathersage. A bit windy but it ensures a peaceful night's sleep from human interruptions. I have a brilliant system in my van. It's an ex-tesco delivery van and was fitted with a 4-camera system with recorder. i managed to get it to work independently off the house battery system. So if I hear a 'worrying' noise in the night I can fire up the recording system and check all the cameras on my viewing screen while still in my warm bed!

As a parent with a child with additional needs I will do anything and everything to protect my family, as you did there. I would be exactly the same playing it over and over again in my head, just the way some of us are made. The positive comments say it all 👍

Thanks, it is hard to watch someone accosting my child when it is clear once he talks back he has the communication level of a 4 year old. This didn't stop the wife and I had to place myself between them and get Maximus in the Van. I wish I had the audio but I still had the externalics plugged in and not switched on. I tried to communicate as pleasantly as possible with her that she was verbaly attacking and intimidating ( with the Shep )a child with additional needs. She didn't like that, but I just said there are now signs only the public footpath and no public access on the water works. She left saying she was going to call the police.
Then he bounced at the window and into the Van. Another person commented they heard my voice break and I was scared, I was to be fair - I was affraid I was going to have to do something in front of my son that I didn't want to do. I was afraid I would loose my cool. The adrenaline kicks in at the point my voice breaks and that is where rational thought normally leaves and fight or flight kicks in. I didn't want to fight in front of my son, but there was no other option than to push forward and get him out of the space. He clearly looked like he wanted to fight and that was not acceptable.
Even now I play it over and over again. The positive response has backed my own thought process, I am not going to lie though. My body and mind had a trauma response both to my own situation and to what Maximus had been exposed to. He is so young in his emotional and social development and things like this can leave an impression. We don't let him watch fighting or play games with fighting in. He is still more interested in Peppa pig. Some people just don't get it. He has violent outbursts towards us though and we know how hard he can hit. He is the size of a small man 😊 with the development age of a toddler. He doesn't yet understand how to control those emotions or feelings.
Sorry for the war and peace reaponse.
Best wishes to you and your family and thanks again for watching and commenting 🙂

The last guy that tried that with me regretted it, no details necessary...suffice it to say, I have not seen that fella in the area of the river since.

Thank you - sorry to hear you went through that for standing your ground. That is always a concern with any incident like that. As Maximus has developmental delay he only has the emotional age of a 4 year old and just going through that was traumatic enough for him without seeing his dad fighting with a guy.
He was right up in my face and my main thought was just to get him out of the space a Maximus was directly behind me. Thankfully I managed to move him out of the door without it escalating. There was a moment though when I worried it would become something more when he didn't move back immediately.

In nine years of full timing I 've only had one very strange incident with older Frecnhman who decided my vintage motorhome was smoking too much as I waited for the air brakes to prime on a winter morning . After a few choice French swear words he came at me with a hammer , but stopped when I didn't move an inch and pointed my finger straight at him shouting " ARRET " !😂 Luckily the age difference made it more slapstick than anything and he seemed to realise he'd lost the plot . slinking back to his own motorhome and slamming the door . I appreciate your incident was far more serious and you handled it well . Good strong response that made it clear you wouldn't be intimidated . People can be very unpredictable though so moving on after the event was the sensible thing to do !!

I think you stayed very calm, I can’t imagine my husband greeting such people so calmly! 😂 Hope your lad was okay though! Whether you were in the right or wrong for staying there, there was no need for their aggression. Just a polite word to advise that the road was private (if this was the case) & to ask that you kindly move on…perhaps even pointing out another spot for you to stay, as they’d know the area! People are just too quick to speak to each other so disgustingly; we are all just trying to live our lives and have some joy! 😊

He was just sat outside the van talking to his robot. Graham told her to step away from our boy and asked Max to come back in the van. Then the man opened our van door aggressively and luckily Graham managed to shut the door and tell him to step away.

I would have moved after the interaction with the woman. Unfortunately, we don't get the abuse for who we are and how we act, we get it for all the previous van dwellers who have parked there before. I don't stay in places just because I'm entitled to and it's legal, I stay in places that are safe and that is my priority. Packing up and driving 20 minutes to a back up spot is far less hassle than dealing with 'the knock'.

    • @traveling-taylors
      @traveling-taylors  4 месяца назад +10

It was so very quiet and safe we didn't expect the knock. We don't park anywhere just because we have rights but we won't be intimidated by people telling us we have no rights either. We just want a quiet, peaceful life, hence why being responsible and respectful citizens. Unfortunately for the guy that wanted to fight with Graham, he will knock on the wrong door one day and will be met with somebody less restrained. I hope that doesn't happen but inevitably it will. People know their rights nowadays and don't take kindly to bully boy tactics. We did move on though and find somewhere else that was peaceful.

Wow, that was intense. I think you can guess my reaction G. I'm so very sorry you having to go through this. I realistically agree you handled it legally and you had Maximus to think of but they had already traumatized him so they already did the damage. If that had been our Harley or Mikey they would have gone into full blown meltdown as I am sur Maximus probably did. I know for sure our Harley would probably never have got in the van again. I hope it hasnt upset Maximus badly and put him off going in Wooflie again. That would be a tragedy that would be heart breaking and destroy everything you are trying to build for a life for him. I think he was a pompous up himself prat filled with his own self importance and was darned lucky he hadnt done that to someone who would have given both of them instant flying lessons with no yoga experience needed.
This has just upset me so much. Its the first time ever from following you guys and supporting the channel that I have been so upset for you all. • @traveling-taylors
      @traveling-taylors  5 месяцев назад +6

Thanks Kenny, Maximus was really upset. They just didn't understand why we were asking the to leave and move away. Only when Maximus was already crying and rocking from the incident with the wife. I didn't show it as he doesn't want to see it again. I always ask him what he would like in the videos. It is only fair. They didn't go away proper till he was screaming and pressing the horn for long periods.
Thankfully our boy is well supported and loved and we took the time after the incident to reassure him he did nothing wrong and that they were not very nice people. His innocence and trusting of other people is still there and he still loves his Wolfie. We talked to him about what he wanted to do after that situation, about moving or going home - which ever he chose we would follow his wishes. He chose to stay and wanted to move away from the nasty people. He wanted to stay his one more night of his holiday. We moved and reassured him again and settled him down.
Thankfully he woke up happy and the people next to us were lovely with him, we spent an hour talking to them and he explored in their van and asked a million questions. They definitely helped him forget about what the night before had brought. I probably sound like I was having a moan about them - when in reality I have no problem with what they were doing. They left no trace and turned everything down at a reasonable time. We had just had a fill and wanted calm, part of the reason we seek out places of solitude to camp in the first place
Maximus has had another adventure since in Wolfie and is looking forward to his next after Christmas. He is midering me everyday to do the jobs that need doing for the colder weather 😊

Been living in this van for around 3x years, Think I've only had 1x knock when parked at a RSPB but I could hear his friends saying "But he's got a right to park here", another occasion I was parked in a public road on the edge of a Castle Estate, I had the local security stop in front of my van flashing light, I've got a bulkhead and no windows only 2x sky lights so was hardly aware, they passed the following morning, we chatted and all was OK. My worst one was when I was parked down a country lane on a Saturday evening at a spot I've stayed at many times, was aware of a commotion outside turned out to be 5-6 Police cars with lights flashing but no sirens, clearly they were looking for someone or something, I knew that if I opened my door they would try to do me for something, but as they hadn't knocked and had no reason to I didn't open the door, they left after a few minutes but left one car with WPC's possibly Plastic cops, they tried intimidating me by saying "This is Really Suspicious, clearly up to no good"' followed by "We've called the locksmith who said he'll rip my door off in seconds so we can make an arrest", I continued to watch Star Trek with headphones on one ear, a few minutes later they said "OK a tow truck is on its way"' but then they drove off LoL.
I'm sure you do what most van folk do as in be polite and pick up rubbish etc. Hope thats your first and last knock, you can't help what others think or do, clearly their world must be pretty sad in order to chose to interfere with others rather than live and let live.

I truly believe that most people are good but they are definitely some that are not so nice and have had their closed minds convinced that vanlifers leave mess and make noise, when in reality most of us pick up rubbish from spots we stay in that locals have left. In this week's video you can see us picking up litter that we didn't leave.
All we can do is just continue doing good, keep ourselves to ourselves and be free 🙂🙂

She didn't know that of course so she was getting more angry with him not understanding her ( not that ehat she was saying was correc) she was holding her dog to try and intimidate him. When I moved between them and gor Maximus back in the van she came at me. I pointed out it where it stated public access and no public access. She left and then the husband came at me like he did.
Maximus also has anxiety and that left him very upset. We moved because he didn't want to stay. No need for any of it.

New sub. Great video and what a great Dad you are for the way you dealt with the situation. 100% did the right thing.
It's pathetic that some locals think they own the countryside. The best "weapon" so to speak is not giving them ammunition by parking legally, being quiet at late hours and leaving zero rubbish etc. If they still start something then, all is fair game. Handled like a true gent and father. As a wild camper/hiker myself, the ONLY thing I wver worry about (worry as in expect to possibly spoil the trip) is other people. There are delusional people out there who have zero self awareness and 100% self entitlement who have either never been told no, are used to getting away with bullying or simply think they own the 10 square miles around their rural home. I'm a Yorkshireman myself and you handled the situation just as I would.
On a lighter note, once I was cycling/camping in rural Somerset and stayed in one remote spot with my bike and tent in one spot for 3 days to ride out some bad weather. Some lovely dear old lady brought me a flask of fresh coffee and home made sandwiches as she had spotted me (walking her dog) on day 2 and realised what I was doing. Gives you hope in society again. Good people need to stick together.
All the best - Mark 😊

Makes me concerned about travelling solo to races or meet ups. All you want to do is break up a journey or enjoy a sunset get a good rest & get off early.
These idiots with ‘percieved’ rights both local and visiting need to be a more respectful and considerate to sharing natures beauty spots and we’ll all run along nicely.
I don't know how you kept it together???? I'll definitely remember the phrase & coach hubby to reach for ‘please step back from my door and out of my personal space’ rather than a bat 😆!

I wouldn't be to worried, we have done 44 nights in the van now since we first went out at the end of summer hols last year and that is the only incident we have had. They are apparently known locally for being not very nice and that's to the local folk. The rest of the time we have met really nice people and found some really lovely spots. We are just planning now for easter :-)
All I could think was I don't want to have to fight in front of Maximus, nor did I want to swear or shout if possible. He did swear and put his face right in mine. There was a time in my life when the reaction would have been very different, now though I just keep remembering Maximus ( although he looks 15 ) is 12 with the social and emotional understanding of a 4 year old. When he goes into meltdown he can hit out at us. We try so hard to explain and show that is not the way. You can hear the adrenalin in my voice trying to not move into full on fight, I was scared I would have to when he didn't move back.
Thankfully in the end they left and we had to move as Maximus was already upset and would not have settled there.
Thank for watching and commenting, hopefully you will enjoy a few more. Take a look at the village in Northumberland from the summer, that one will make you feel better about everything :-)

Our NC500 went without a hitch mixing up campsites, overnight paid stays in the carpark & stealth in laybys when tired and too dark to know the mountainous roads to be safe driving.
I love my 10-14 days away exploring and short overnighters but mainly long weekends doing the sports I love and hanging with friends.
More people are finding car camping accessibleso hopefully less restrictions and more facilities opening up year around like pubs, car parks & camping spots plus surf beaches, lakeside access, forests and nature reserves. Viva la van life!!!

I met a couple just like that in Perth, Australia. They were as equally intentional to not just intimidate but to also disuade people from being near their property. In my case, I was on a dog beach in front of their units with my dogs swimming. What occurred has to this day left me unsettled when I think about their behaviour. However, I did later hear that they do that to everyone, even young boys going fishing, who left a backpack against a garden wall facing the beach. So all I can guess is that is specifically crafted behaviour to push people away from their exclusive areas.

We all have to protect our families, that's perhaps one of the oldest of human instincts. Here in the US, these type of encounters unfortunately escalate fairly quickly, but I have always counselled my husband to refrain from violence if at all possible. We have so many mental health issues that can easily escalate, and most people don't want to harm a mentally ill individual if at all possible. We are finishing the years long task of raising 2 special need granddaughters, and hope to go on our own "vanlife" adventures in another year, but based on the fact it will be in the US, we will have protection stashed against the worst case scenarios...

I’m so sorry to hear you all went through this, in the moment it’s bloody terrifying…. Myself and friend were in a similar position….a man didn’t like her dog (15 months old poodle).. so he kicked the dog and then came at us when we tried protecting the dog… he was nose to nose, bright red, veins popping, spitting as he shouted his diatribe (hates campers it seems)… I put my arm out and instructed him to “back off, step back” he took that really badly, he went to hit me 😮… he completely lost it…. Luckily I was able to move side on and he hit past me….. my dad taught all of his daughters well, Iv done BUJ, MMA and boxing for over 25 years…. I had trained my whole life for that interaction…. I wrapped myself around him like a snake, took his back and rear naked choke until he dozed off… then I lifted his legs to help him come around and suggested again “back off” he tried one last attack and again missed his target, at that point I hit him and we left…. He was shouting “I will get you next time”…. There are some dreadful people about… he was an angry drunk little man…. Everyone should learn self defence on some level…. I think it saved us…. Once your limbic system kicks in, it’s really hard to think outside of frames, so the more you practice the more natural it is…. Meet them with the same level of violence they meet you and if they do go nose to nose, exceed their level of violence, he really underestimated his marks that night
You handled it beautifully, clear instructions and you held your own, bloody scary

The other thing strangely I found happened with overnight camping ,out of way places down lanes and places way off road ,in this country you can get dks boy racers coming down ,sitting outside your camper playing loud music ,fkn around what a strange culture we are with some people 😂

I am replying backwards to you - just the way they pop up. Yeah we had a trip out a couple of weeks back and had 4 cars sat outside revving up, they were playing music aswell but I just didn't get the revving. I went out to talk with them and they were only kids and alright to be fair. Asked them if they were being funny or what, they didn't realise we were in there to be fair to them. They stopped the revving and turned the music down a bit. They stayed for about another 15-20 minutes and then made their way.

@@traveling-taylors yeah like I said that's a typical scenario with the boy racers ,my advice would be and don't get me wrong probably like yourself ,I'm game as a shithouse rat and normally was tooled up in the van ,but I wouldn't bother going out to em normally they get bored ,after half hour I couldn't be arsed giving them satisfaction of letting ,them know they were bothering me sometimes I've just slipped shorts on ,and gone through front curtain and re located van nearby lol.

I hear this a lot with people who sleep in vans about bullying and harassment from other people and I agree it’s completely unfair - unless your parked in a very awkward place such as blocking an entrance or a reserved place then what is the problem if people are sleeping in a van - if they’re not causing any trouble then what is the problem ? People having nothing else to do than find an excuse to argue with each other about petty things

A few local people have commented and said they are just not very nice people. Thankfully they are the only nasty folk we have run into on our travels.
Thank you for watching and commenting :-)
