Keep the midge menace at bay with the Thermacell MR300

  • As any wild camper knows - particularly those who spend anytime attempting to enjoy the remote beauty of the Scottish Highlands - midges can ruin an otherwise idyllic experience. Head nets and spray-on repellent are an absolute essential, but wearing a mesh bag over your head spoils the views and, let's be honest, is far from stylish, while sprays can often contain unpleasant chemicals that are bad for both you and your kit.
The lightweight Thermacell MR300 offers an alternative solution. Slip in the repellent tablet, fire up the mini butane burner, and enjoy a 20m area of midge free happiness. At least, that's the promise. Does it work in a real-world experience? Well, if a warm, still evening camping on Skye isn't a good test for the MR300, we don't know what is.
Check out this video to see how Trail's gear editor Ben Weeks got on, and whether he survived the midge menace un-netted and unscathed.

I have a ThermaCell MR300 and I don't even bother packing it anymore. It does NOTHING! It may be attracting them for all I know but even after running for 30-45 minutes, I notice no difference in the mosquitos at all.

I thought these were just a Canadian and USA thing because Steve Wallace has one. Great to see them over here.
