  • The ThermaCell mosquito device in this video was evaluated in the most mosquito-infested place in the entire Scandinavia, Jårkastaka, which is located north of Kiruna on the road to Karesuando and Finland. The review is unbiased and truthful, although it was difficult to estimate the number of mosquitos exactly. A total of 150 to 300 mosquitos were removed from the air in the car within 15 minutes.

    Thermacells work great, I usually set up 4 of them around me so I’m covered no matter which way the wind blows. I like the ones that mount to the top of a camping stove fuel canister. It’s cheaper than buying the small butane cartridges and last a really long time with a 450g canister.

    Prallethrin being a pyrethroid is quite effective against mosquitoes in sufficient concentration and exposure time but unless trapped they rather fly away from the stuff than perish.
    At usual concentrations pretty much harmless to most mammals like humans thanks to our bodies being able to metabolise the stuff and/or it being comparably not well able to bind to our sodium channels, yet it’s highly dangerous to aquatic wildlife and cats who have been given the middle finger by Mother Nature when it comes to pyrethroids, I guess.

    I have a cabin in Northern Minnesota. Before thermacell, I soaked myself in 40% DEET. Now, with thermacell, I can be in my backyard doing whatever I want, like it's the middle of winter without a mosquito in sight in the middle of summer. I was going to hire someone to screen in our deck before so we could enjoy the summers bug free but Thermacell works just as good. I have 4 around our cabin, one by the back door and three around the backyard/ deck/ bonfire area. Works great on a boat too in the middle of the lake where mosquitos can be their absolute worst/thickest you can imagine, talking tens of thousands flying around your immediate area, so thick you could scoop them out of the sky with a net, but with thermacell they keep a good distance.
    Only drawback is if theirs a slight breeze over 10mph, then the wind nullifies the affects somewhat.

  • @nick4088
    @nick4088 Год назад +13

    It doesn't work if windy. It works great otherwise. I use this inside a mesh tent while cooking. I also it to clear my area of the 200+ mosquitoes between my mesh and tarp before I get out of my hammock in the morning or right after it gets dark. Works great after 10min of turning it on. I have had mine for 6 years already.

      @FlorinArjocu I don't mean constant wind. In that case, you wouldn't need to use it. I meant if there is gust here and there because the smoke needs to stay in the area for it to work. Like the inside of my hammock tarp space.

  • @flipadavis

    I put one of these exact Termacell units on the ground right next to my bare foot and ankle. I could see the wispy smoke coming from the insert so I knew it was working. Iv been using these devices now two years. I seem to attract mosquitoes more than anyone I know. One thing I do is add a few drops of pyrethrin to the pad to kill the mosquito's and not just push them away.
    To make this product cheaper to run I buy ebay refill insecticide pads and took the one way valve from the gas bottle so it can refilled.

    • @beyondEV
      @beyondEV Год назад +4

      the pads already contain pyrethrin (gas flame is only to disperse it). it's a biozide that kills all living things (lower dose may only cause temporary paralysis). be means of paralysis. this is also why it says you should not use it indoors. lethal dose for humans is very high, but there have been deaths, if kids got their hands on bottle's of the stuff.
      the good news it's almost certainly only acute toxic, so no long term effect like cancer.
      the fact that it's unsolvable in water, means it's mostly solved in white petroleum, which is a rather nasty irritant (e.g. in the eyes).
      important notice: since it also kills bees, it may be illegal to use during season or daytime, when bees are flying.(it strongly depends on jurisdiction).
      If you go the route of use it in liquid form: it's capable of penetrating through the skin.

So if used accordingly to manufacture directions, in an open environment, there will be wind? Tell me how much of the burned elementals do you think are actually going to deter the bugs, versus the burned elementals simply getting blown away by wind? Remember, it took 15 minutes for any effectiveness.

    anti-mosquito incense coils are just as effective as those thermacell things, which is to say not very effective at all, but they are a lot cheaper than thermacell. Costing only $1 here for a pack of 10 coils each of which burns for many hours.

      Where are you getting 10 coil for $1? Is it made from essential oils?

      @@ICheat_ILie_ISteal I live in Ecuador and in south america you can get a pack of 10 coils of anti mosquito incense for $1 or less a pack. They aren't made with essential oils, they are made with rich-D-trans allethrin and other pyrethrin variants.

      Right, having a smoldering coil in a car or tent is lots of fun.

    • @rick5078
      @rick5078 Год назад

      @@BoraHorzaGobuchul smoldering thermacell or smoldering incense coil, not much difference. If you read my comment in detail you would have noticed I said that it wouldn't be very effective at all. Besides that, they do have these metal trays to place the coils in to reduce the risk of fire etc and they do not put out as much smoke as normal incense does, burns very slowly and emits little smoke. In a tent I wouldn't recommend using unless you place one inside the tent for half an hour before going to bed and removing the coil before you go in and leave the tray with the coil outside of the tent in a safe spot or just extinguish.
      Something I do think would be a lot more effective to use is permethrin products that you apply to fabrics. (clothing, tents, sleeping bags, car upholstery, etc.) an example would be sawyer SP657.

    I couldn't be bothered with this technology stuff, although it seems to work. It certainly doesn't work well enough when it's windy, so it's mostly useless outside. I have great success with using lemon grass cream with eucalyptus on myself and top it off by spraying my clothes with repellent that uses icaridine, instead of deet. It lasts about 5hrs. Only the most persistent, hungry and desperate mosquitoes still manage to find blind spots on shirts, to poke through and attempt to suck my precious blood. I am from Canada and I live in a high density mosquito area.

      You’re using the “free” version of RUclips I’m guessing. The service you’re enjoying isn’t free to produce. So, if you don’t want to upgrade to the monthly paid service you pay by watching ads. If you’re time isn’t worth anything to you keep the free service. If you value your time and find the ads annoying, like I do, sign up for the paid service.
