This particular scripture has always confused me as so many preachers and believers interpret it different-mainly they believe that we use this passage to bind evil and loose blessings. For example, a prayer I hear often is "I bind you spirit of depression and loose the blessing power of the Holy Spirit according the Matthew 18:18". The way it's explained here makes the most sense of what that passage means.

This passage is clearly in reference to the Apostles, if you read the passage in context of Matthew 16 Jesus speaks this to Peter and the apostles. If you’re confused read the early church fathers and how they understood these passages, it was always understood in reference to the authority of the church and the bishops NOT us

      Luke 13:16-24
'And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?'
When I was discussing this with a friend I spoke the above in a slightly different way and they lost control over their legs, fell to the floor making groaning noises. After everything had finished they looked younger, fresher, and more alive.

So this idea applies perfectly to the need of a spiritual father, you need a helper on the way, since you mentioned the word "encourage". That's what church is. When you go there, you must have someone to let you know what falls under binding and loosing, to establish discipline. Thanks for years of work bro ,been following you for a decade now

I always thought that this was about the law of attraction.
That whatever you loose on earth, means that you loose it in your mind.
So, loosing towards a lazy coworker, would be to not take it seriously, and let them do whatever they are doing and the result that they will reap.
To grip it would be to worry about it, or overly concern yourself with it, which binds us in the mind and body.
And when we grip something, eventually it falls away from us, our concern pushes those we are concerned about away.
The same can be said for dating. When a partner pulls away, you shouldn't enmesh with their ego. Just loose it.
It creates peace, freedom, and independence.
When Jesus talked about forgiveness, he tells us to essentially loose it. And those who grip, it will be gripped in heaven.
It's a reality that we cannot control anyone, or influence someone who doesn't want it. Knowing this, offense is inevitable, and we must do what we can to maintain peace for others and ourselves, and go to the Father.

Interesting question. Pastors are supposed to know their flocks, but in mega church’s there is no way they can do so. The ‘church’ is really a gathering like the multitudes came out to hear a message. Jesus sent out 70 and gave them power. Then there is the 12 Apostles. I include Paul in that “first fruits” class. Then the 3 inner circle. It was to Peter Jesus gave ‘keys’. Keys are used to open something that is locked.
Go to any enormous Evangelical church and the masses will be told they have the keys to the Kingdom.
Told they can step on snakes & scorpions, told they are filled with the Holy Spirits power, anything you read in the Bible. Yet even the 12 “class” in those church’s don’t wield the abilities Jesus gave it to the 70 “class” and they did. Why can’t everyone?
Because of sin. For example Paul tells the Corinthians why people are weak and sick among them and it had to do solely with how they were treating The Lords Supper.
Anyone today who can do what the 70 did will be very incognito bc what would happen to them today?
Government forces would haul them into a science room and poke and probe and take their blood and X-ray their brains to try to figure out if they are AI, or an alien.
Today is absolutely nothing like it was in the very first century.
Leaders don’t even govern themselves according to Biblical precepts. Nepotism is rampant, tho they are not to show partiality.
They make money off the Word tho they are told ‘you received free therefore give free”
The women leaders gossip under the guise of discernment.
Both men and women leaders will put you through humiliating tasks to ‘see how humble you are’
The ‘church’ as they call it today is not made up of Ecclesia. Tho they will tell you everyone has been called. Jesus calls us out and to live separate. You could line up believers and non believing women and not tell by their scanty clothing who is who.
I may sound like I’m ranting but I’m just speaking the truth.
They do not discipline each other.
Pastors put on airs towards women and are full of self importance.
Not all of them, but the ones who do are ‘allowed to do it”. Is my point. The grosser infractions like being a drunk as well, and the fornicators need God to bring them to public disgrace. The Pastors who know about it keep silent. That’s just Calvary Chapels.

There are no longer any eye witnesses of Jesus alive on earth so there are no longer any apostles, and this authority was given only to apostles so no! :)
However we definitely taught to learn from our elders in the faith and imitate them! Assuming they are faithful to the Lord and his Scripture.
      1 Peter 5:5 ESV:
“Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

hello people I wanted to say how God is good God loves you so much that he died on the cross for you so that we could go to Heaven with him as long as we repent our sins and spread the gospel. His faithfulness doesn't stop there though he also lead the Isreal slaves out of Egypt and kept them safe and protected. He is also slow to anger and even then his anger doesn't last long. I am not ashamed to say that I praise a mighty God like him a God who loves me and, a God who cares about me and, a God who comforts me and who helps me.Jesus loves you so much that he died on the cross for you so that you can have eternal life with him so please repent and spread the word of God Seek the Lord while you can find him.
Call on him now while he is near..Jesus loves you so much that he died on the cross for you so that you can have eternal life with him so please repent and spread the word of God

@@robertdavis3036 Oh ok, sure man. I'm glad to help you out. We are all still learning brother, if anyone tells you he isn't you should be worried haha! I will just stick to this passage. In Matthew 16:9 just like in Matthew 18:18 Jesus is speaking about church discipline, here specifically to the apostles about matters of discipline, and in Matthew 18:18 to all Christians on overall church discipline. This is not a list of spiritual gifts but rather God affirming that discipline within the church, binding and loosing, is instituted from God.
As for the Spiritual gifts in Corinthians, the Bible says they exist, therefore I believe they exist! Though some of them, like tongues, do seem very rare nowadays, and I think the arguments made by many cessationists reason that out well. I am not a cessationist but I do understand their reasoning so I do lean a bit in that direction.

So, in a nutshell, binding is telling demons that you know that they have no power over you or other believers or situations. "You may as well leave demons because I have faith in the name and power of Jesus and evil will lose to the good news of the Gospel."
God's Word is our offensive weapon that we can use against Satan that gives us the ability to live a victorious Christian life.
