Hey I really liked this version of a guide, but will you bring out an updated one since the rulea have massively changed as of July 19th. Not neccesserely for me but I liked this video to rewatch for some clearifications and because of your chill behavior and voice
@SebboRex Hey buddy! Yes, I'm about halfway through the script for a new and improved one. I'm off on holiday for a couple of weeks, but when I get back I will be recording the new one as the first video back. Anything else I could include in the video that you think would help new players?
Well I dont know how far the script already is but imo the following points are crucial: - mission setup / determin blue/red player - deployment - transport - cover system (so is for vehicles) - how to score / half rang ruler - backup for commanders - bomb icon upgrade rule - mayber compare old to new unit/upgrade cards (which is not a must as experienced players know and new players will learn the game with new cards anyway) These are my guesses so far. I hope this will help. Enjoy your holiday.
Yes... I found the activation rules a bit vague. I actually thought it mean that if the command card said move two units, it meant move two at a time. Glad to have it cleared up.
Hey I had a quick question! In this video you mention that the engaged player *may* move their other minis into base contact, but do they not have to? I imagine it would cause an issue in regards to hero units engaging someone, the player decides to not move them into base contact, then simply kills off the units in base contact first. This would lead to them not being engaged anymore and a very dead hero, or am I mistaken?
Aha yeah I will be, I can only manage about 1 a month at the moment, maxed out with work! I've taken on more commission painting given the cost of living increase and its annihilated my free time.
Yes, a move action is the only action you can carry out twice with any unit. Every other action (including free actions that have the same name) can only be carried out once.
Complete rules are in Rules Reference - almost 100 pages of rules. When you deploy mission, condition and deployment cards, you deploy all four, not three.
They are indeed! The issue is that they're quite daunting at first. Using this at least gets people started. Edit: just noticed your part about deployment etc - noted!
Thanks for the vid, easy to follow along to and excited to step into the game! Where did you get your StormTrooper squad leader from? Absolutely stunning mini
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 while I know and understand this is the official rule I don't think I have never seen anyone actually follow the line of site to exposed minis rule and only remove the exposed mini in any game that I have watched played, on RUclips or in person, they usually start with the basic troopers and work their way up to the leader.
@TheLawlessReaper This is the way. Alas, the guide was as close to the official rules as I could get it, people can (and will) do what they want after that. The whole guide needs redoing as Line of Sight has now changed, as has speeder movement and compulsory moves.
Really good tutorial! When a unit is hit, how do you decide which figure is hit; for example if my unit has one special weapon figure, how is it known when he is hit or a random soldier? Thanks.
Only the models that are visible can be killed, as shown in the shooting section of the video. However, if more than one of your Troopers is visible when your unit suffers damage, you as the defending player get to pick which ones are removed. The last model remaining is always your unit leader, however. If you had a squad of 4 Stormtroopers and a DLT-19 heavy weapon, you'd remove 3 regular Stormtroopers first where possible before removing your special weapon or the unit leader. Hope that helps!
26:40 Luke rolls 7 dice to attack when you said he rolls 6. Was this an error or is he generating an extra dice from an ability or rule? Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the guide. I have a question as a starter of the game. What happens when no Player has an comander left? For example i play obi wan and my opponent count doku. Both commabder are dead, does i say one of my troup Leaders is now the commander or do we make it like its a draw?
One of your squad leaders is given a commander token, and they become the de facto commander. You replace that unit's order token with a commander token, and carry on!
For those of us watching this later : It's worth noting some of these rules and systems have changed fundamentally; notably, the Panic system was reworked (the same year this video came out, even, lol) and now units that are Panicked DO actually lose all their actions, then try to dump Suppression tokens equal to its Courage (functionally trying to all its actions to rally) rather than the fleeing mechanic. This was changed for... obvious reasons.
Yeah, it changed like 3-4 months after I made this video which was really annoying. I'll be doing an update to it this year, when I finally get some time!
just brought the clone wars starter set. does it affect how general grievous plays with the different assembly option's. i.e if I assemble with 4 lightsabres can you still use the gun in game? (+ any other models in game with multiple assembly option's) coming from 40k it's normally WYSIWYG? really useful tutorial vid
You can build him however you like! When it comes to heroes, people aren't normally fussed. In a squad, it's generally WYSIWYG. You can't generally claim a regular Battle Droid is carrying a rocket Launcher if it actually isn't, for example. Glad it helped!
Hi! Is it true that speeders are allowed to make the compulsory move either before or after all their actions? I thought it had to be the first thing they do every time.
That is one of the Games Workshop Battlezone boards. 😊 You'll need to buy 2 packs to get a full size board, which is still a bit short of the legal 6'x3' Legion board.
No, though you can force them to move aside and receive a suppression token, but only during your compulsory move. It used to be any move, but now it's only the mandatory move at the beginning or end of the activation.
Very new to the game and really liking this video. A third into it, and it’s really easy to understand so far. Tried watching a how to play video from another creator and, the information isn’t wrong, just feels off. Too much information ha.
There is only one 4 pip card, and the only option is Standing Orders. It tends to be used when using any other card would be a waste, or if you've taken cards belonging to specific leaders and those leaders have died. When that happens you can no longer use their command cards during the game.
16:44- I know this is a year old and it was before the newest rules change but I thought they got rid of gaining a wound on clambering in the rule change before this?!?
They may well have done, but at the time my gaming group clearly hadn't picked up on it. There was also a bit of a gap between filming it all and posting the video, so it may have got missed in there too!
very nice tutorial ;) however i think you made some little mistakes they changed deployment so all 4 cards are avaliable when choosing battle conditions so blue player can not force any cards i also think vader only had one action in your video but thats only a detail all in all one of the best base tutorials i have seen so far
@@kevinlocke6120 It's not a free action, it's a regular action icon on the card. Force Reflexes, Barrier, Choke, Jedi Mind Trick etc are all free actions but the throw isn't unfortunately. Unless of course its been changed in an FAQ somewhere.

@@criticalhitwargaming5290 oh ok thanks. So when my unit is panicked, the only way for them to be un-panicked is if they rally and lose suppression? Otherwise they keep running away ?
@@finntay-yn2rl Yep! It's a bad position to be in. You can remove suppression tokens via other means, however, such as a nearby unit with Inspire X activating and removing suppression from the panicked unit, or command cards that allow you to recover a unit that receives an order.
22:01- Oh, it is at max speed!?! I got that part wrong……. I guess! But you are also contradicting yourself right now! I thought you said “it doesn’t matter how many suppression a unit has, it can always do 1 of their actions”?!? That is not considered one of those!
No matter how many suppression tokens a unit has it can always perform 1 action, which is true, until the next section where I explain about a unit that is panicked, and then that action MUST be a full speed move towards the nearest table edge. Either way, no-one has expressed any confusion over suppression in the comments yet, so we're all good.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 I hear you in my right earbud about 6x louder than my left. Made me think you had a stereo microphone setup, but were talking more into the right channel than the left. It's not my headphones!
20:53- That is definitely NOT true at all! Even back then! I know the panic rule has been changed a few times but one thing has already been the same! If that unit is panicked (double the amount of suppressions or more their allowed) they lose their full action!!! So in the case of these stormtroopers they are suppressed at 1! So 2 would make them panicked!!! Now I don’t remember when it changed but before it was changed to what it is now, it used to be that if you fail your rally phase and still have double or more suppressions then allowed your whole activation is used by 1 speed 1 move to the closest edge of the board! If that unit touches or goes off the edge of the board they are dead!!! And that has been the rule since this game first came out and is literally written in the rules book! The rule for panicked units are different now but still not what you said!!! Ever since it changed all the way up until now it has been if a unit is panicked by double or more suppression and fails to rally (which means they can’t get rid of enough suppression tokens to not be panic anymore) they just lose their active! Either way, it DOES MATTER how many suppression tokens a unit has on them! In a big way!!! I don’t agree with how little certain units are only allowed, but I have no control over that!
...That is literally what I said in the video. No matter how many suppression tokens a unit has it can never be reduced to less than 1 action, which is true, until the unit is panicked. I then went on to explain that a panicked unit can ONLY make a full speed move towards the nearest table edge. It can't do anything else. I did however neglect to mention the unit dies if it moves off the table, which was my bad. The Stormtroopers would be panicked at 2 if a suitable commander wasn't near them, yeah. So yes, it was true. Thanks though! 😊
In fact it turns out I did mention that the unit flees if any part of the leader's base leaves the table. I've just listened back through to the section you're talking about, and everything I said in the video was correct at the time of filming. 1. Units rally at the start of their activation by rolling defence dice equal to number of suppression tokens the unit has, removing 1 for each block or surge result. 2. If a unit has greater than or equal to their courage value they are suppressed and lose 1 action, but cannot be reduced below 1 action whilst suppressed. 3. A unit with a number of suppression tokens equal to or greater than double the courage value of the unit is panicked and may only make a full speed move (not a speed 1 as you said) towards the nearest table edge. If a part of the leader's base leaves the table the unit is removed from play. 4. A panicked unit can become un-panicked during the rally step by dropping below the panic threshold after rolling to remove suppression. All the above is correct and is exactly what I said in the video. 😅
21:19- “NEVER”?!? I keep going back to how old this video is……….. and it makes no sense because it says this video is “only” a year old! There are a few keywords and situations that will allow you to stack cover! And I think the newer rules also change the fact that you can or can’t stack off of terrain in the way ( but that part doesn’t really matter because I know that was changed after this video)! But what you said hasn’t been true for awhile now!!!
At the time you could never remove more than 2 hits with cover, and keywords such as Low Profile only improved your cover by 1 if you had no cover or Light Cover. This has since been FAQ'd and now Low Profile can be used to ignore 3 hits with Heavy Cover (last I played in February '23).
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 yeah, that’s why I said “but that part doesn’t really matter because………”! But I also thought a few characters could stack back then!?! That was really what I was talking about. But I also negated it with the part I already repeated!!!
My only problem with Star Wars Legion (apart from Disney killing the IP) is the factions aren't built to be inclusive. You basically can only play clone vs Droid or empire vs rebels. If they had kept one time period and built factions from that I think it would be strong competition for warhammer.
You can play any faction against any faction, and the game is balanced as such for tournaments. Obviously that's a bit immersion breaking at times, when your droid army is fighting Luke Skywalker, but in terms of gameplay the whole thing works seamlessly. It's no different to all the Imperium factions constantly playing against each other in games. I think Legion's biggest issue right now is a lack of marketing and properly pushing it as an alternative. Games Workshop is such an industry giant that its very hard to break their hold.
Just take it slow and start with one unit and one leader on each side. Once you get used to choosing a command card, issuing an order, and then activating your two units, then add more stuff in.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 I tried to reply with links. Apparently YT ate the reply as spam. According to Fantasy Flight's website the game is out of print. Checked last nigh and today.

Depending on what size game you're playing, it's ordinarily 1-2 Commander units, 0-2 Operatives. You have to nominate which one is issuing the order unless you're playing a specific named card.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 another quick question about point values is it you pay it once to get a whole squad of them or pay once for each mini for example if I pay 40 points do I get a single battle droid or a squad of battle droids and it’s just called a “unit”

Well I dont know how far the script already is but imo the following points are crucial:
- mission setup / determin blue/red player
- deployment
- transport
- cover system (so is for vehicles)
- how to score / half rang ruler
- backup for commanders
- bomb icon upgrade rule
- mayber compare old to new unit/upgrade cards (which is not a must as experienced players know and new players will learn the game with new cards anyway)
These are my guesses so far.
Hey great video. Are you still planning on videos for the fellowship?
I am indeed mate, time is my lacking resource at the moment! They will be done though, as they're great models!
Thanks a ton for this tutorial! I'm really hoping you return to producing content, as this was prime stuff.
Aha yeah I will be, I can only manage about 1 a month at the moment, maxed out with work! I've taken on more commission painting given the cost of living increase and its annihilated my free time.
I like the way you painted the rebels
26:30 so Luke on his first action did a movement, and on his second action also did movement? so any unit can do movement twice?
Yes, a move action is the only action you can carry out twice with any unit. Every other action (including free actions that have the same name) can only be carried out once.
Complete rules are in Rules Reference - almost 100 pages of rules.
When you deploy mission, condition and deployment cards, you deploy all four, not three.
They are indeed! The issue is that they're quite daunting at first. Using this at least gets people started.
Edit: just noticed your part about deployment etc - noted!
in both starters both armies come out similar only cis and rebels Cac 40 points less (1 Basic unit without accessories)
So many rules, my god :D Well done!
Very helpful! Thank you!
Fantastic video. Very helpful.
Glad it helped!
20:30 what if that one unit is the unit leader?
You swap the unit leader with another model in the unit, and then remove that model. 🙂
Thanks for the vid, easy to follow along to and excited to step into the game! Where did you get your StormTrooper squad leader from? Absolutely stunning mini
The magical world of 3D printing!
I've got some fantastic models in my collection now - loads of Legion stuff to choose from nowadays.
What happens if it is the squad leader that is the only exposed unit when fired upon and killed?
You swap one of the other models with it and then remove that model. The model you replaced with the squad leader becomes the unit leader.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 Brilliant! Thank you.
Great tutorial, very good explanation.
26:40 Luke rolls 7 dice to attack when you said he rolls 6. Was this an error or is he generating an extra dice from an ability or rule? Thanks for the video.
His Operative Luke card is actually 7 Black dice, so the commentary is wrong. 🙂
This should be given as a qr code for ever legion starter box
@eros5556 Aha thanks! Hope you found it useful.
Outstanding video. Thanks.
Thanks buddy!
Maybe time for an updated version with the new rules?
I'll be making a new one over the next couple of weeks to cover all the updated rules as there's enough of a difference for it to be required. 😄
@@criticalhitwargaming5290That would be amazing!
Exellent video, well done.
Thanks!
just brought the clone wars starter set. does it affect how general grievous plays with the different assembly option's. i.e if I assemble with 4 lightsabres can you still use the gun in game? (+ any other models in game with multiple assembly option's) coming from 40k it's normally WYSIWYG? really useful tutorial vid
You can build him however you like! When it comes to heroes, people aren't normally fussed. In a squad, it's generally WYSIWYG. You can't generally claim a regular Battle Droid is carrying a rocket Launcher if it actually isn't, for example.
Glad it helped!
Excellent tutorial!
Thanks very much!
What website shows the official point cost updates thats mentioned at 5.20?
It comes up on the screen. Tabletopadmiral.com.
Really well explained.
Thanks!
Great tutorial!
Hi! Is it true that speeders are allowed to make the compulsory move either before or after all their actions? I thought it had to be the first thing they do every time.
So on some of the cards it says 'at the beginning', but the main rulebook on the website says it can be at the beginning or end.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 Thank you for the clarification!
Where can I find a playmat like that??
That is one of the Games Workshop Battlezone boards. 😊 You'll need to buy 2 packs to get a full size board, which is still a bit short of the legal 6'x3' Legion board.
Hello, is it possible to crash into enemies with speeders?
No, though you can force them to move aside and receive a suppression token, but only during your compulsory move. It used to be any move, but now it's only the mandatory move at the beginning or end of the activation.
Very new to the game and really liking this video. A third into it, and it’s really easy to understand so far. Tried watching a how to play video from another creator and, the information isn’t wrong, just feels off. Too much information ha.
Glad it helped!!
Must you have any 4 pip or does it have to be standing orders
There is only one 4 pip card, and the only option is Standing Orders. It tends to be used when using any other card would be a waste, or if you've taken cards belonging to specific leaders and those leaders have died. When that happens you can no longer use their command cards during the game.
Thanks help a ton.
I máme legion too i love it
Okay so you can dodge criticals, but cannot be avoided otherwise?
You can only Dodge critical hits if you have the Outmaneuver special rule. Otherwise, Critical hits cannot be removed by cover or Dodge tokens.
16:44- I know this is a year old and it was before the newest rules change but I thought they got rid of gaining a wound on clambering in the rule change before this?!?
They may well have done, but at the time my gaming group clearly hadn't picked up on it. There was also a bit of a gap between filming it all and posting the video, so it may have got missed in there too!
very nice tutorial ;)
however i think you made some little mistakes
they changed deployment so all 4 cards are avaliable when choosing battle conditions so blue player can not force any cards
i also think vader only had one action in your video but thats only a detail
all in all one of the best base tutorials i have seen so far
Yeah that was my mistake on the cards! As for Vader, he moved and chucked his lightsaber as his two actions.
chucking his saber after a move is a free action so he would've still had another action.
@@kevinlocke6120 It's not a free action, it's a regular action icon on the card. Force Reflexes, Barrier, Choke, Jedi Mind Trick etc are all free actions but the throw isn't unfortunately. Unless of course its been changed in an FAQ somewhere.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 vader has the relentless keyword and perform a free attack action after a move action.
Saber throw would be that free attack
Great video
Thanks very much!
nice one
Useful
I really want to play this game, but I can't. I'm so invested in Imperial Assault and almost completed the whole collection. I really can't start a new game. 😢
🫠
I throw the cards and dice in the bin and then use the cool minis for stargrave or one page rules 😅
Please send me the cards! For any units you get. I will use them. 🙂
I’m wearing head phones and your audio is pushed all the way to the right ear, why?
I have no idea mate, must have been a fuck up during the upload
When my panicked unit gets to the table edge, do they remove all panic/ suppression?
Nope. If any part of a unit leaders base leaves the table, the whole unit is removed from play - they've fled the battlefield.
Great! Thx a lot!
Do the minis come pre painted?
No, they don't. You have to build and paint them. 🙂
You can paint them
22:01- Oh, it is at max speed!?!
There’s something Vaders scared of, sand
100%
Holy stereo microphone, batman!
Elaborate, chief!
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 I hear you in my right earbud about 6x louder than my left. Made me think you had a stereo microphone setup, but were talking more into the right channel than the left. It's not my headphones!
@@HypothermicIce That's very strange. It was recorded in mono. I'll try on my headphones later and see if I get the same thing.
I find it funny my first game is a tournament not a practice game😅
I like to stop by war hammer live events and ask random people to please explain the rules real quick.
❤️🇬🇷
Does Disney get a cut of the money?
So confusing
Just take it slow and start with one unit and one leader on each side. Once you get used to choosing a command card, issuing an order, and then activating your two units, then add more stuff in.
Nice video an Tattoo on your wrist.
Aha thanks, my wife has an X-Wing in exactly the same place.

Do you know if you can have multiple commanders or is it mandatory to have just one in a game
@pufferfancyfish you get the number shown on the card, before any upgrades. 😊
