Ghostface costume and mask is in every street corner in Halloween night and it is recognizible even by non-horror movie fans. If there's a character that is iconic out of this bunch, it is him. I wouldn't consider the people under the costume in a Horror Icons ranking since it's the costume that is actually the horror icon, not Billy, Stu, and the others

Yep, Ghostface itself is a character and before all the unmaskings, it's always the same character. The different motivations don't really play a part until after the reveal.
Then how would you be able to do an individualized ranking of horror icons? You could make some pretty objective rankings of how "iconic" each of these characters is. The intrigue lies in finding out which of these characters Cody considers to have been utilized well in the stories of their respective films, not how they look.

Tiffany switching to camp is just character development, she was the best thing about the miserable season 2, and is an absolutely Iconic character for me.
A new tier above iconic should be created for Jason. That mask is the very first thing that should come to anyone's mind when the words "horror movie" are mentioned. Extra credit to Jason when you consider that it's been well over two decades since the series has been consistently active, yet he's still THE horror villain

It's his opinion and GF is 12 people. He isn't ranking them by how iconic or recognized the costume is. He ranked them by his personal favorites and non favorite. It is his opinion. Not too hard to understand. Plus besides F13 2009 and Freddy v Jason the F13 movies are pretty lame. Jason is recognizable but the movies are pretty cheesy and trash besides a select few

For me, Jason Voorhees will be forever and always iconic. Now admittedly, I do have a huge personal attachment to him because Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street are the first horror films I ever watched and made me a fan of the genre, but objectively speaking, there are few horror villains more iconic and recognizable than my boy. Even in his bad movies like Jason Takes Manhattan or Jason X, Jason himself is still badass (mostly). As much as I love Freddy Kruger and many other horror villains, it's hard to say the same for them.

To me, Ghostface is iconic bc the entity or character of Ghostface will never die or go away as long as someone continues to pick up the mantle. Even in the first movie there is more than 1 killer. And as the franchise goes on it gets harder and harder to pin who or how many people are Ghostface.

just remembering my school time on halloween, where 80% of kids had a Scream mask, crazy popular were those Scream mask with a pump that lets fake blood pour over it. That alone tells that its an iconic character

The ghostface mask is one of the few horror masks that truly terrifies me. Maybe its because my older cousin made me and my brothers watch scream by convincing us its not scary. That first intro scene gave me nightmares as a kid for months. Even now the mask still makes me uneasy but i have kind of gained a appreciation of it seeing as i have a poster of ghostface i put up at halloween.
I think the fact that Jigsaw is not physically present in a lot of the saw franchise makes his character even stronger.

As I see it Tobin Bell is awesome as John he is memorable and his speeches are really great the first time you hear them. But then they use those some speeches in multiple movies. The way is see the Saw movies are iconic is the kills and seeing how he is just a disembodied voice pretty much in most movie. He is not really the killer he is the best actor keeping the movie going.

Jason maybe but honestly F13 is a cheesy bot great franchise. Idk how it got so many movies. The best one is the 09 remake. The 2nd one and maybe the 3rd or 3th are OK but they are nowhere near nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween or Hellraiser or chucky it's an overrated and over done franchise
@@XvKJP2015 I disagree about Ghostface, yes 12 characters have been under the mask but Ghostface is basically a separate character, like the way Ghostface acts for most of the movie doesn't really depend on the character that is under the mask, its a separate thing and Ghostface has an entirely separate voice too
I think Lesile Vernon is a criminally under looked Horror Icon. Beyond the mask is one the best horror films of the modern horror era. Nathan Baesel's performance is absolutely brilliant. Honestly think he deserves as much love as Art gets. Hoping for a second film.

F13 (2009) and f13 part 2 and Freddy v Jason are the only good f13 movies. And one is because Freddy is in it. The .movies aren't scary, they are cheesy, boring, and nothing special. Part of the reason Ghostface is iconic for me is because I’m never watching the scream movies saying “that’s so and so in the costume,” it’s always just that is Ghostface. When the character is on screen, it’s always been separate to me than when the killer/killers are revealed.
Gf is a Beast in costume but half of the reveals were trash and way past suspending your disbelief. I agree with the way you look at it but that isn't how it works. Unfourtantley the killer with or without the mask is GF. S6 had the best and most ruthless GF until the lame reveal. Last 20 minutes almost ruined the movie. 12 people were gf maybe half were good reveals and good killers. S1, S2, and S4. S4 I'm in the minority but it was ahead of its time. Jill was a phyco legit and she almost got away with it.. it was an actual good reveal

I grew up in the peak of the slasher genre which was the 80's. The truth is that their was only 2 Iconic slashers and it wasn't close. It was Freddy and Jason. If you could find a Micheal mask people would call you "Jason". I'm a huge Freddy fan and know why Jason was the perfect rival. It's based on iconic status and power. When I see a list and it doesn't start with those 2 it makes me think it biased. At least this video admits this.

Jason voorhees and ghostface are iconic though, they just are. Iconic isnt about quality of film or 'whos behind the mask' its about...how iconic and well known they are. Frankly having the tall man up there but not either of those is sooo off base
Absolutely love all the appreciation you showed Norman Bates and Psycho in this video. Psycho is my all time favorite film, and it initiated my love of horror, so I always love it when people give Psycho/Normal their flowers.

Tobin Bell did an amazing job as Jigsaw. His complex character is one of the most well written in my opinion.

A few missed horror characters I'd be curious to see where they'd place in your rankings; Samara from The Ring, Kayako from The Grudge, Carrie, Bagul from Sinister, The Hill People, Alex from A Clockwork Orange, Sam from Trick 'r Treat, Annie Wilkes, The Thing (I'm guessing this one for you is iconic), Regan from The Exorcist, Deadites, and Xenomorphs.
The Thing should be up there. I've been absolutely hooked lately on watching breakdown videos of that movie!

I remember Phelous stating that the best “Wrong Turn” was 2. It was because the movie knew the premise and had fun with it. They weren’t really trying to scare you, and it made it better.

Honestly, I enjoy comedic Freddy. Something about a terrifying killer with a sense of humor... Freddy was unique in that he was different.
A lot of big slashers back then were just these silent relentless forces of evil... and then you have Freddy cracking jokes and actually having a personality. He made murder fun.

Thank you for putting Norman Bates in ICONIC! He and Psycho is popular yet underrated more people should be mentioning it.
It felt impossible for anyone to portray Hannibal better than Anthony Hopkins did, but man, Mads Mikkelsen found a way to even better the character. Easily one of the best TV shows of all time and I really hope we somehow get a season four one day!

Cody you been putting in work recently. Thanks for all the consistent content you been putting out. I'd say we have agreed only like 50-60% of the time over the years but I'll be damned if you're not the first and sometimes only channel, I check for a review. Always grounded, concise and validated in your opinions and I know that takes work to form the framework for these videos. Regardless if we agree or not I never leave a video without being entertained, so just wanted to say I appreciate it brother.
I'm right there with you. More times than not I agree with Cody, but whether I do or don't the guy puts on a great show! I've probably been watching him for at least a year or so and I consistently watch his reviews and rankings.

Firefly Family are Iconic and genuinely stuff of nightmares. Capt. Spaulding, Otis and Baby are Monsters and truly iconic for the genre.
This may be a controversial take…but the Xenomorph should he in the iconic tier. To me Alien is the best horror movie ever made. The xenomorph was absolutely terrifying in that movie
Great tier list other than Ghostface. The Ghostface mask is unbelievably iconic, even to those who don't even know what Scream is. I remember seeing LOADS of teens wearing Ghostface costumes for Halloween back in the early 2000s and even today. Hell, the reason why I got into Scream is because of how cool and iconic the Ghostface mask is. I also feel like Billy The Puppet should be iconic too, probably just as much as Ghostface. Also, Pearl is great, I just don't think she made a big enough splash as a villainess, but moreso the movie Pearl did some waves along with X. I think Hannibal, Jason and Pennywise also deserve the iconic tier as well. The more I go over your list, the more I disagree, but that's perfectly fine haha, still a solid ass video.

In my opinion the reason that the strangers are so loved for me especially is that they didn’t need a creepy backstory, or build up or anything, they where just three people who decided to murder a couple in the first movie (and it was a great choice to have them be finally killed in the daytime) and the second movie has incredible atmosphere. The knocking, the skinning, the line why are you doing this “because we can” come on. Love the video man had to represent the strangers fans

The only reason I say that Ghostface, Jason, Michael, and Freddy should be under iconic, is because people of all ages know who they are. Even if they don’t like horror. They are the most known characters of ANY horror franchise. That’s just my opinion, and I agree with most of your list!

Jason has 12 movies, 2 video games and multiple cameos via pop culture references. That is iconic as fuck. Yeah a lot of the movies blow, but Jason keeps us coming back, even to Jason on a Boat
I think the movies started going down hill once Jason was on a boat lol. I mean the only good Jason movie after that, Hell, and X, was Freddy vs Jason, but that had more to do with the 2 icons duking it out, and to this day that movie is the highest grossing film in either series.

That's what a lot of folks are missing about the "icon" status. It's not about personal feelings on the characters, the movies or otherwise. Jason is one of the handful of "monsters" that broke the boundary from screen Slasher to pop culture, and whether the movies were shit or not, people kept coming back and the star only grew brighter. Taylor Swift is shit, but is absolutely the definition of an "icon". Personal feelings don't affect whether the character is iconic or not, but way too many peeps in the comments all up in their feels about "they're not iconic cause I think the movies/character are bad."
Some of you don’t seem to understand that this is a ranking based on my personal preferences, as stated clearly in the first few minutes of the video. We’re not supposed to share the same opinion…otherwise these videos would be pointless. Have fun with it and make your own.

I'd include the Predator franchise and the Xenomorphs from the Alien franchise. Both have really good and really bad movies, and some pretty awesome kills. It's practically criminal that Prey wasn't given a theatrical release. It was excellent! The Prometheus crap is a totally different character, only tangentially related to the Xenomorph storyline IMO.
You also forgot Sam from Trick R Treat, Pan's Labyrinth, and Krampus.
I like your ranking.. a majority of it is pretty spot on with mine, with the exception of Jason Voorhees.. I don’t have any nostalgia with the F13 movies as much as the NOES movies but I believe he deserves to be next to Freddy and Michael Myers in Icon status
In my opinion I personally think that ghostface should be put at iconic because the actual character look itself it’s so iconic. Everyone would be able to recognize who ghostface is even if they haven’t watched the movies. I separate ghostface and the people behind the mask. I see them as different but ghostface itself I feel is super iconic.

Great video Cody! Really loved your explanation of each character, your own opinions, and how it brought joy or excitement to watching horror/slasher films. Although, I can't help but mention that Jason, Ghostface, Pennywise, and Leatherface are 100% iconic villiains and have always influenced pop culture and are some of the first names you think of when talking about horror films.
I almost passed out when you placed Ghostface in Bloody Good 😂 to me, he's the best character in any horror movie, hell in any movie, and the first Scream is my favourite movie of all time.. I don't like the last two movies (early '00 vibes are missing), but he's still the most iconic villian of all time in my heart!
I understand the whole “my opinion” thing, but you can 100% make a horror villain tier list that is based on facts instead of opinion. The fact that you put all of the iconic characters in every tier except for iconic just proves that you didn’t even try to be objective. I respect your opinion, and I think it’s a valid opinion. However, I also think your opinion is insane.

I would be interested to see how this tier list would differ if you ranked these horror icons only by the movies you enjoy in the franchises and disregard the bad movies. I feel like that would be fair since it’s not technically a franchise tier list. Awesome video, as always!

Love the tier list content, this one especially. I feel like everyone's opinion on iconic horror villains comes from when they saw them first or which one scared them the most as a child. When you see the movies for the first time as an adult it isn't quite the same effect. This video has made me wanna check out X and Pearl as well.
My first introduction into horror was actually with “Jason Lives”, “The Dream Master”, “Child’s Play”, “Hellraiser” and “Sleepaway Camp II”. Michael Myers was actually, to me, was like Jason with you, I didn’t watch a single “Halloween” movie for whatever reason until “Curse of Michael Myers”.
So that’s why he put micheal in reject just because he didn’t watch the movies. Trash if he did it based of the characters that way then fs micheal would’ve been iconic ghostface, Jason, Freddy, and whoever else is basically the fore fathers of most of these horror movies

To me personally, Jason is the most iconic horror villain. We had no other horror movies in the house except for Friday the 13th (the original, Part VI, and Part VII). I watched VI and VII hundreds of times as a teenager. Part VI I think is genuinely terrifying. To this day, Jason still kills me in my nightmares regularly.

Art the clown to me is iconic already. I enjoyed even the “all hallows Eve” film. Definitely was happy to have terrifier 2 win horror fans over. But I do understand why he’s in KILLER. Part 3 will make him iconic for you though for sure😅👍🏽

Iconic should be how well known they are regardless of how people feel about certain movies cause its subjective. But you cant deny how iconic jason, pennywise and ghostface are. You can show any kid or adult a picture of all three and theyll know who they are. Household names are iconic.
100 percent agree with your opinion on Mads' Hannibal!! He is certaily my favorite in my favorite series! I love him so much. would have put him in iconic tho...especially Mads' interpretation.

When I was a young kid, I inadvertently saw the end of Phantasm - the closing of the closet door, the image of the Tall Man reflected back, "BOOOOY!", the removal of the kid. I had no idea what I had watched, and it would take me decades to eventually figure it out, but it definitely left a distinct impression on me.
I think the biggest ones are freddy Krueger, chucky, ghostface, Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees. Children and non horror fans recognize and know those characters. My personal favorites are Chucky, Freddy, ghostface and Jigsaw. Jigsaw isn’t as recognizable as others, I have noticed
I'm very surprised you didn't include Dr. Herbert West, because I feel the actor's portrayal in the first two movies are pretty great. More especially with the original Re-Animator since I consider it an all-time classic for spooky season

Great video! I think something that makes a character iconic for me is if people who do not watch or even like horror, know who the character is. Especially if they haven’t even seen the movie the character is from. Just knowing who they are I think speaks volumes to the iconic status of a character.

I absolutely loved Bill Skarsgard’s portrayal of Pennywise. Genuinely terrifying. I didn’t like Chapter 2 much. But the 2017 Part 1? One of my favorites.

Epic! My list would include Sam from Trick 'r Treat because it's to Halloween what Santa is to Christmas 🎃 However you made me re-think Horror icons; wouldn't have thought about Norman Bates. He is based on real killers which makes him the scariest character!!

Jason and Ghostface should be in the Iconic category. I see the argument with Ghostface but that costume alone has been a staple of Halloween since the first movie came out. It doesn't matter who is behind the mask it's the presence itself that brings back nostalgia and fear.

For me ,ghostface you got wrong. You see that mask and you immediately think of the scream franchise. Its impossible not to think of ghostface as an icon. You could flip your idea on it's head and argue the fact that there are so many ghostfaces, makes him so iconic as the idea of him will never go away. But hey just my opinion there
