Hey guys, thank you so much for bringing us along on this project! Love all your videos! I have a request. In a future video could you please teach/show us how to read the gauge you measured the snap gauge with? I appreciate you taking the time to show us but I have absolutely no idea what I'm looking at, lol! Thanks again and keep up the great videos! Say hi to Homeless for me!
@LaxerFL hey mate thanks for watching, great question, Kurtis is using a micrometer and we'll try to explain that next time but there are quite a few videos on RUclips already about "how to read a micrometer" you could check out 😁
It's lovely to see that vernier scales have not been completely displaced by digits and dials. I learned how to read them over fifty years ago in ninth grade General Science. There's no reason for this elegant 17th century device to ever go out of service!
Just awesome! I continue to be impressed that Kurtis can execute his visions so precisely. Nice video work Karen, especially liked the milling bits! Cheers 😎
Well guys, today is my first official Friday of retirement. After 46 years in machining, I get to kick back and watch others work. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent with us. Catch you next week my friends
Master Kurtis, it is because of your channel that I decided to go to school to become a machinist, even if I work long hours during the day. Thank you for the inspiration. Tonight I finished my last part for this semester and I did really well.
That's fantastic news! This absolutely makes our day to hear you're pursuing your passion in machining thanks in part to the channel. Huge congrats on finishing your last part for the semester and doing well - that's a big accomplishment! All the best with your future mate!
@CuttingEdgeEngineering Same except I'm having a hard time finding good deals on machines, however there are a lot of things I've been wanting to machine for a while now just never had the time to get around to it
Good luck Mr Sangalli, maybe one day we will be watching you with as much interest as we do with CEE and many other great machinists, fabricators, engineers, and other inventive and creative types. Onwards and upwards.
For five decades I would not have been able to identify a crane brand unless the brand was painted on it with giant letters. Today, a self-mobile crane drove past and I said, "That's a Franna!" and sure enough, a moment later I saw Franna written on the back of the boom. I was such a happy geek! Thanks for all the great videos, Kurtis and Karen. I love watching you guys!
Ha! That's awesome, what a great feeling to finally recognise a Franna in the wild! We love hearing that our videos helped you with your crane identification skills. We get a kick out of seeing Frannas out and about too 😁
I simply can't believe the quality of the videography on this channel. Karen's as inventive and accomplished in her own way as Kurtis is in his. It's a magic combination.
What sets you apart from the rest is you show the good, the bad and the ugly. Your attention to detail and thorough explanations are supreme. Thank you for the education. Love your projects.
Their is bugger all ugly in these videos compared to a normal engineering shop, the dude is one of those rare people who you can watch work doing the exact same thing as you, and go, how the bloody hell did you do that that easy.
For many years on American public access TV, there was a show called New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram. He was a master carpenter who would find interesting pieces and replicate them, often with improvements on the original design. Kurtis gives off that very same vibe. It's hypnotic to watch a master craftsman showcase their skills. Always the highlight of my Friday mornings. Kudos to Karen for keeping this one under an hour. The bar bending flashback was just right.
My father represented a company that manufactured cutting tools and he called on machine shops in Bridgeport, CT. He took me with him once when I was about 12 to show me what machine shops were all about. Since that day I've always loved machining and have thoroughly enjoyed watching this channel. I really don't know why I didn't become a machinist myself. It's a profession to be proud of.
Im from Bridgeport as well! My dad was a lathe operator at Bridgeport Brass and my uncle worked at Bridgeport Machines on Lindley Street assembling the quills on vertical mills. They don’t make them like that anymore!
Your Dads may have known my Dad, who spent a lot of time in Bridegport. My Dad worked for Bryant on Springfield, VT. His name was mine, Carl Mikkelsen, except was often known as Mickey.
1 hour episode of my favorite TV show! Every Friday I check for the next part. Edit 1.1: 20:23 A little magpie tells me the sound of moving freight is your favorite.
"We're going to make some enhancements and improvements...." Kurtis, we would expect no less! And the video edit just gets better and better, so glad you keep a consistent format.
This was one of the best CEE videos! Making something from raw material and heavy duty. Ticks lots of boxes, lathe, boring, bending and welding. Great job Kurtis and Karen
❤ Kurtis & Karen & Homeless I have enjoyed watching this series and looking forward to seeing the next episode. The work you do is fun to watch. Bringing back some old memories for me. The content is wonderfully done with Karen's keen photography and I love the bloopers. Keep em coming.
"I decided, because I am going to be rebuilding it I'm going to be making some enhancements and upgrades", We would have never expected that from you Kurtis!
Glad to see a young going into the trades. I went to school in the sixties to become a tool and die maker . That training, plus welding school , framing, and electrical courses has stood me in good stead.. I’m pushing 80 and still doing projects . 👍🏼good luck
Just amazes me how good of an old school engineer you are, these big oil companies are full of people calling themselves engineers which to me is an insult. None of them can weld, machine and do what you do but because they play on a computer and shuffle paperwork they have the audacity to say “I’m an engineer”. To me engineers are the guys like you who get shit done, the builders of worlds!
And that's your advanced class in metal fabrication and precision machining. Damn fine work, Kurtis. In fact, it's Cutting Edge Engineering (sorry, couldn't help myself!). I think you can rename this to the Franna Super Duty Crane when you are finished. It looks like your bird visitors are ready to be adopted into the family! And Karen: Gesundheit! Thanks guys for bringing us along. It is the bright spot of every Friday! Enjoy your weekend. Cheers.
Kurt's I love learning about your machinery, and I like watching the way you do things, I like learning from people that actually know things you make me want to be a machinist
The Franna Crane project had me “hooked” from the beginning. I was amazed by how much got thrown in the bin as it came apart. Thrilled to see the rebuild!
The quality of your videos has become so natural over the years... But now and then it just needs to be said: Just like in the beginning your videos are enjoyable and entertaining because of the quality work and the authenticity with which it is presented and without any profiling, artificial misshaps or any drama! Keep it up folks! All this is to rare...
19:40 great video yet again! Quick suggestion - use a spotting drill larger than your thread size to spot before drilling. That will then give you a spot for your drill AND will chamfer the hole. Save you an op and a tool change between drilling and tapping
@51:30 I LOVE seeing these birds interacting with you folks! My wife and her mother raised birds for years when she was a youth and teenager... she gets a real kick out of this.
Hey mate, WOW! 👀 That certainly is mighty generous of you! Thank you for enjoying our videos, and in particular the Franna project! Excellent and very interesting content as well as entertaining. Our dog Addie is in love with Homeless, she'll run to our bay window just to make sure he didn't run outside in our front yard! I got hooked on your series when I found your site a week ago, thanks to my wife she reminded me again to subscribe. Retired a couple of years now, finally set up my garage to the way I want it and now have that fixing bug back in me again. I guess if you loved your trade, it never leaves you. I don't miss the management part but I have always missed working on the floor, something different ever day just like your content. Keep the fantastic videos coming, cheers from Canada!
Kurtis, that was some beautiful fabrication with that heavy plate, you made it look so easy, and the fit was amazing, keep up the great work and your crane will be better than the old one.
You don't often make mistakes, or should I say you never make mistakes, but when you do you learn very quickly from them, good on you. I love the way you work with stuff. Your Lady is also an excellent camera artist.
Good evening Kurtis, just a thought. The bent section of the boom. You may want to reconsider your thought about eliminating that section of boom. If for some reason you decide to see the crane, in the future. The next possible owner may want the original boom, section intact for there own use. It may be more difficult to sell the crane. Just a thought, Joe Capo.
Top stuff from Mr and Mrs Kurtis again, engineering skills diversity at it's best. You made those processes seem so simple, yet so accurate. Good to see Homie having play time with his dad too. Cheers guys, very entertaining episode.
All the usual fine craftsmanship, precision and efficiency from Kurtis. But today I noticed some really exceptional cinematography from Karen too! Lately I've noticed you really hit the mark in your edits, Karen, with just the right amount of presentation, pause, and fast forward for the repeats. We want a moment to see the details, even seeing the repeats makes the video whole, but we don't need it all in real time, you've got quite a knack to finish the edit with the right cadence! Now, today you've really raised the bar again with the lighting, color balance, shot composition, and all the other details aligned; it's no longer about Kurtis' fine work, but the presentation has an aesthetic that is a joy to look at, too! Careful with that hammer Kurtis, your cinematographer has already pushed the envelope, she's director now. I cannot wait to see how she sets up the Franna drifting video!
Kurt's is a magician with metal - clean, simple and elegant work!! As an aside, it's certainly that he does not need to go to any poncy gym - he gets enough of a workout humping big chunks of metal around all day!! Cheers for the content guys.
Do you guys are professionals I totally respect your work I do it every day for 47 years of all kinds of machinery pavers cranes Rock trucks supervisors you guys are cool as hell God bless you have a nice day
I enjoy watching your program on RUclips. .... Been watching for some time now.. thank you for allowing me to watch by your contacting me that you have something new you are coming out with. . You do a great job in what you do.. i tried your kind of work and tried welding as well. . I also tried auto body work as well. But ended up doing auto repair on cars. And retired in 2006... I'm 77 now still enjoy watching you make things look so easy. But that's because of your experience you became in your training yourself..... Plus you love what you do that makes it better. Good luck in the future and beish you the best. Thank you again for sharing your gift to all.
Hey mate Thanks for the kind words! Glad you're a subscriber and enjoy the channel. Love that you gave welding a shot! Experience helps make things look smooth, but you're right, there's work behind it. Passion is key, and I appreciate you following along. Cheers 😎👊
WOOHOO. For me it's Friday and that is the week day I get to enjoy your company. Hello folks. I really love builds like thai that uses all the weoding, Machining and a general mechanicing. Out takes the works. Best Tube hour I have seen all week. Take care eh.
Finally, finally, FINALLY...... the Franna crane is starting to be rebuilt! I hope this is the start of MANY "build-back" videos to come!! Ive been waiting in EXTREME anticipation for the build-back videos to start! I CANT WAIT to see the Franna crane lift the first load all upgraded and pretty looking! Once again, thanks for kicking off my Friday! Its been a really tough week the last 5 days and this video literally just made it all worth it!! CHEERS from Tulsa Oklahoma USA!!
Hello CEE team, greetings from Belgium, Franna Crane project Friday 🧑🏭🧑🏭🧑🏭, Can't wait to see the crane fully restored and see the upgrade/new feature in action, as those type of future proofing upgrades/features will become very handy in the future. Have a great weekend.
Amazing machining skills, Kurtis! What a fine example of the benefits of a good fixture table, and I’ve never seen anyone use a rosebud O/A tip that big. Nice work on the bending and the welding. This crane rebuild is really progressing nicely, and I look forward to each successive video you put out on it. It would be a real joy to be able to look over your shoulder and witness each step in the process. Homey and the birds are a real hoot…..thanks for including them…the entertainment factor goes up when you show their antics. You have my inerest peaked, so looking forward to the next one! God bless!
I am always impressed with your professionalism and skill. CEE obviously runs a very tight ship. Your shop organization, housekeeping, and equipment maintenance is on point. I never see a cringe worthy moment with any material handling or safety practices. You should be very proud of your operation. Thanks for sharing these projects with us.
On todays episode of how to make a great product even better we will be mining the ore to cast a new and better engineer. Once again you two have knocked it out of the park on the best entertainment I watch. Now I have to get back to rebuilding my 64 year old vertical bandsaw. But nothing like the crane project. Have a great day.
Im having breakfast. Mesmerized by the project. I guess im to weird 😅😅 Going to get myself together and get going on my grand daughter car serviced. Going to do my full service to make sure im comfortable about the safety of of grand daughter. Im working on a 2014 charger. She going to order an updated exhaust system and im going to install it. So thats for later. Today my youngest daughter is receiving her Masters MBA and then a reception for her later this afternoon. 3 more years than another graduation again for her Doctorate. My middle daughter has her Master's also. Im a proud Daddy. Cheers Kurtis and Karen.
As an ordinary bloke who has no experience whatsoever with all this engineering it amazes me you can just ring up and order just about anything laser cut with such a smooth finish! Australia is truly the lucky country!
Karen, I gotta hand it to you, you're becoming quite the accomplished director/producer/editor! Great angles, shots and always the perfect lighting! Another great video!
There are great minds in physics, medical and fields of law. Then there is Curtis, master of many skills; genius with his mind and hands. I hope many young folks become inspired by these videos.
I just landed my dream job !! I was building large industrial compressors, I became proficient at designing them. I became disabled, the company was sold and auctioned off. NOW.. after a decade of trying I have finally made the leap to the other side. I will be a project designer for SixFlags. My 1st task is designing a new ride/attraction. Thank you Curtis and Karen for keeping me sane during this period !!
I have seen a lot of DIY projects - DIY soda, DIY table, DIY green house, DIY house, DIY robot, DIY plasma chamber but that's a new one. DIY effin crane. Bra-vo. 👏
Every Friday, I get through my short videos, catch up on the news and late shows, then make a pot of coffee and settle in for CEE. That's my Friday routine and I can't wait for it. I effin live you guys! You make my week end up amazing! Thanks Karen and Kurtis and Homie!

Congrats Laza!

Kurtis bought the Franna just to teach us how to build a better one from scratch.

wow what a wonderful comment to read thank you!
So well said !
You said it very well. This channel just has it all: great craftsmanship and excellent camera and sound work.
So true. Artists think in 3D. Very few engineers can do that and many actually despise engineers who can.
Couldn't agree more, but Kurtis and Karen subs for this channel should be far higher..
I simply can't believe the quality of the videography on this channel. Karen's as inventive and accomplished in her own way as Kurtis is in his. It's a magic combination.

For many years on American public access TV, there was a show called New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram. He was a master carpenter who would find interesting pieces and replicate them, often with improvements on the original design.

Kudos to Karen for keeping this one under an hour. The bar bending flashback was just right.

That whimpering _"please help me"_ absolutely broke me, I still can't stop giggling. Absolutely love your outtakes!
Kurt's is a magician with metal - clean, simple and elegant work!! As an aside, it's certainly that he does not need to go to any poncy gym - he gets enough of a workout humping big chunks of metal around all day!! Cheers for the content guys.
Excellent Fabrication Work! 👍
Karen saved the hammer. Good to have a dependable assistant!
Alright where's me hammer

Finally, finally, FINALLY...... the Franna crane is starting to be rebuilt! I hope this is the start of MANY "build-back" videos to come!! Ive been waiting in EXTREME anticipation for the build-back videos to start! I CANT WAIT to see the Franna crane lift the first load all upgraded and pretty looking!
Thanks for watching we're looking forward to keep sharing the project journey with you all!
Great video Kurt is an artist with the lathe, Karen is an artist with the camera, Homey makes sure everyone is safe it’s a good team. Thanks
Yes! We love the Franna crane. Work can wait 😂
God bless!
Lots to learn in general from your work Kurtis, but especially from your work ethic. Well done
YAY the Franna crane project!
Karen, I love how you Never skip a step. One full step then time lapse and great editing make your vids just right.
Thank you so much for the positive feedback 🥰
Franna Friday!
you know it
On todays episode of how to make a great product even better we will be mining the ore to cast a new and better engineer. Once again you two have knocked it out of the park on the best entertainment I watch. Now I have to get back to rebuilding my 64 year old vertical bandsaw. But nothing like the crane project. Have a great day.
I always enjoy your videos,
Kurtis' good job, Karen's perfect editing

Im a proud Daddy. Cheers Kurtis and Karen.
As an ordinary bloke who has no experience whatsoever with all this engineering it amazes me you can just ring up and order just about anything laser cut with such a smooth finish!
Australia is truly the lucky country!
I do it all the time in the states it’s not cheep but it’s better than bob free handing it with his plasma torch or his oxy-fuel
Karen, I gotta hand it to you, you're becoming quite the accomplished director/producer/editor! Great angles, shots and always the perfect lighting! Another great video!
Wow, thank you!
Another Friday night with CEE 😎👌 Thanks guys. Love the content
There are great minds in physics, medical and fields of law. Then there is Curtis, master of many skills; genius with his mind and hands. I hope many young folks become inspired by these videos.

We love you guys❤❤❤ from New York City
Thanks for watching from NY!
17:13 Nice!! .. not just a chamfer, a good lead in, makes it much easier to reassemble when it needs service years from now!
Will you have to get the crane recertification in some way after your rebuild to meet some sort of government regulations? Just wondering
If we want to take it offsite/on the road we'll have to look into certification for sure
Yeah I can’t wait to see all of the little extras u are doing to be putting on the crane 🏗
"Ha! I'll build my own crane, with ..." You know the drill)
Bra-vo. 👏
It's like the best mic drop ever while showing what real big D confidence can do
Every Friday, I get through my short videos, catch up on the news and late shows, then make a pot of coffee and settle in for CEE. That's my Friday routine and I can't wait for it.
I effin live you guys! You make my week end up amazing!
Thanks Karen and Kurtis and Homie!
It's like Christmas, 1 hour of Amazing Work from CEE.
