Finish Building NEW Crane Boom! | Franna Crane Project | Part 17

- We're making serious progress on the new boom section for our crane! We start by salvaging parts from the old boom before getting started on the brand new 6 meter RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section). But before installing the custom-built boom end we crafted and built in Part 16, we meticulously weld in all the necessary components like pulley mounts and guide block plates. The new boom end itself goes in smoothly, and then it's time to lay down some serious welds. We weld the boom internally to the RHS and weld all the flat bar onto the main end plates. To finish things off, we tack weld flat bar to the top of the RHS, creating a barrier for the extension cable. This episode is packed with fabrication and welding, showcasing a fantastic upgrade for our Franna crane. For anyone that's never run a torch, it's difficult to convey just how much talent and discipline it takes to operate a cutting torch with that level of accuracy. I'm amazed, not sure I've ever seen anyone with a hand as steady and accurate as yours.

This might sound like I'm exaggerating, but this crane project actually taught me that difficult projects are possible if you believe in yourself and it helped me get out of a negative emotional state that I'd been in for literally years. I'm putting my life back together partly because of CEE. Thank you!!

That hand cut torched hole for the pulley mount was a pleasure to watch.
Yes though this time for sure Kurtis would have to break out the magmount drill and cutter to make it, though that possibly is being reserved for the side access holes he will have to make on that boom section later on.
Kurtis's skill with the gas axe is way up there. His cuts by hand often look like they were made by a robot.

@@onebadsavage26 allistairc123 is pretty good as well, he makes but cuts on big stuff, cutting to a pretty good accuracy even for 10 ton parts that are being rebuilt.

I have been following this project since the beginning. What have I learned in all these 17 episodes?
1. The value of quality work: you are no ‘cutting corners’ here. This is not a quick fix, but a complete overhaul. This is a lesson for life.
2. Aim for the best: If you can do it right, do it right! I see this in what both of you do, Kurtis and Karen.
3. This project has been a lesson on perseverance. Sometimes, the end seems far away, but you have shown us how important is to go on, ‘one step at a time’. Many times, I asked myself when is this disassembling part is going to end? Well, now we are enjoying the assembling part of the project. But to be able to enjoy this video, we had to accept the previous ones. Without them, today’s video wouldn’t have been as rewarding.
4. During the whole process, enjoy the simple things of life. Homeless and the birds are as enjoyable than machining and welding. I could say that without them, the whole project would have been boring!
Finally, I have to say that your field of work is totally different to my job. I work with books, ideas, and people. Not steel and machines. But I’m attracted to your channel because I can feel that yours is a vocation, not just a job. Both of you enjoy what you do. And we, the viewers, can see that.
I expect like me Kurtis goes to “work” for the enjoyment of it as much as paying the bills!

I’m always amazed by Kurtis’s skills and knowledge. Speaking into a camera seems to be his only weakness… and that’s where Karen comes in. She aces everything else. You two were made for each other. He's the hardest working person I've ever seen and he makes it look effortless. I sincerely hope all the best for him and his lovely wife who must be proud and grateful to have such a hard working husband. I'm sure he feels likewise with his wife.

Kurtis - Your spacial awareness is incredible - knowing where things are, and position they need to be in. Backing up the forklift at an angle to miss the shipping container - especially fitting the custom boom end inside the RHS in one take, was great. I have to admit, your a cutting torch demon, the circle cutting and pad cutting holes are next-level. Karen, the videography is excellent - you make a wonderful team.
Hands down one of the greatest fabrication experts I've ever seen in my life, I'm a Sheet Metal Worker in Canada & to say how rare it is to see such craftsmanship & dedication is an understatement. Kurtis has taught me more than 90% of the people I've worked with... all made possible by the outstanding videography of the wonderful & astonishing Karen.
I'm just a simple lawyer and bass player, but I've gotta say that in watching welding/repair/fabrication videos from other guys, I often find myself saying "Hmm, pretty sure Kurtis wouldn't do it like that . . ."

I am in absolute awe of both of you. Kurtis's freehand flame cutting and his welding are at another level. The pleasure I got from seeing him cut that round hole was marvellous. The delicate and precise handling of the forklift to fit that end unit into the box section was amazing. Karen matches his expertise with her filming and editing and helps with giggles and comments. As for Homeless, he must be the happiest little dog in the world. I can't thank you enough for the hours of pleasure and amusement you've given me.
I'm at work at the moment (graveyard Seattle city bus mechanic!) and I'm SO FREAKING EXCITED to go home in the morning, get comfy in my easy chair in my jammies with a cup of tea, and watch the next episode. Thank you Kurtis and Karen AND HOMELESS for hours of fabulous "edutainment".

@@RaceBanner_ Those are our bases, yes, but I currently work at South Base which is in Tukwila. We go rescue buses in Seattle proper all the time though, as well as much further south. Best job I've ever had.

The laserstraight cutting is easy to do.
So easy in fact I have made a CNC plasma machine, as all my hand cut parts tend to become one offs (even if I don't want them to)
I don't have the words to express how much joy it brings to my heart to watch a highly skilled and knowledgeable craftsman at work...along with the expertise in filming and editing who brings it into my living room. I love the regular updates of Homie and the magpies day too.

The best part about watching you Kurtis is you remind me so much of the way my Dad went about things. He was a fitter and turner. Built bloody complex machines from basic sketches. Machines that ran for 40 years. Your quiet way of understanding and applying your skills is something I learned from my Dad. I often get a tear in my eye when you do something that reminds me of him. He’s long left us but guys like you help me remember him.

So I'm a physical therapist specialized in psychosomatic complaints. I do a lot of training with people on relaxation and body awareness. In my spare time I'm modding a motor cycle. Welding here and there. Welding - I found to my surprise - is an incredible source of relaxation and mindfulness. And the even more surprising part is when I see and hear Curtis welding my body automatically relaxes. Who would have thought that I can have a relaxation by proxy welding 😃

I was a welder in the Navy. I recall replacing the liner in a smoke stack on a destroyer. It was dark, dirty and anything but relaxing!😮😊
A hobby welder thinks it's relaxing because it's not their profession.
Because I'm a hobby welder 😉, it's something I enjoy.
I taught my middle daughter how to weld. In high school, she could weld. Her teacher asked where her skills came from. She said my daddy. Even though she didn't become a welder by trade. She took on the challenge.
She became a Teacher and earned her master's in childhood education.
I also knew many professional welders that did alot of welding in boilers/Boiler makers.
There were some women in that group.
Talk about flyash, working in very confined areas, workwear in proper PPE. My hats off to my fellow workers.
At the end, their eye sight are affected.

I use to weld from 06 to 15 everyday as a metal fabricator !, OK in winter, in summer you had wet undies from start to finish.. very nasty :D

This is by far one of the Engineering Fabrication Extraordinire. Most of the machining or other maker videos are either restoring old machines or run-of-the-mill small gadget-making. This is real hands-on, pure craftmanship supreme. In the age of CNC machining and other automated mass manufacturing the skill of the individual is almost disappearing but you and a few others are just a joy to watch and learn. Greeting from USA

It is nice to see the rebuild begin versus the tear down and finding more issues that need to be fixed. The content is awesome. I just hope it is still cost-effective versus buying something in better shape or new.
I'm loving the crane project, thanks guys. So much of the crane needs rebuilding/replacing/modifying I can't help wishing Kurtis had built it from scratch. Yes more work and I confess I'm being greedy wanting Kurtis to show more of his stunning ability :)
Forklift experience level: Suspiciously accurate
TGIF. It used to mean drinks after work, now it means quality work, informative chatter, and entertaining banter. Add to that animals, trains, equipment malfunctions, I think this is a much better way to spend my Friday!
Kurtis is such a pro. I look at the stuff he does and think, "I'd have misread the measurements and torched that hole 10cm out of place in the boom section." Oh, and I'd spend half my life searching the workshop for tools and equipment rather than getting on with the job. I think one of the compelling things about this wonderful channel is that Kurtis does everything the way many of us would want to do it if only we had the skill and the confidence.
The amount of talent in this mans body is incomprehensible 😮
Honestly this is my favorite channel on RUclips and I await the content weekly. Kurtis you are the absolute best at your craft and as soon as I see you miss a spot the next scene is you taking care of it. @@RaceBanner_ Unless he charges 7k AUD/day*, he also just proved he can make a whole new section for cheaper than Franna can. Depending on material delivery times, he could probably do it faster too!

@@arthurmoore9488 I’m an airline captain and happen to live near a major maintenance base, & I’m friends with many people there. I am forever amazed at what our skilled trades team can create. Frustratingly though, many aviation parts MUST come from OEM or approved suppliers at 10x the cost, and often at a lower quality than what they can build in house. Zero question Kurtis will have one of nicest Franna’s out there.
And - true story - I stopped by maintenance the other day to help out on-the-clock with some improvements testing with the manufacturer, and what was moving a bunch of rebuilt engines around in the run-up bay?

@@RaceBanner_ Even if Franna aren't at the corporate level, lots of their staff will be watching and saying "see, I told you we should have done X, not Y". Or the Italian equivalent, with gestures that would scare the birds away.

While you were working in those confined spaces, I was amazed at how calm you were. Then I saw what would have been my response in the outtakes. I'm glad to see you are human after all.
There’s Lots of clever people on RUclips who make some great things but man you do you up the game all the time, hands down my favourite fabrication channel on RUclips shout out to you both as the content has to be fun to watch and I know how much time and effort goes into that.
That's an awesome build, a lot more complex than I thought it would be, you are a master fabricator, not to mention operator, sliding that front end in with the forklift was something else!

Am I impressed or what, I never thought I'd see one guy put together one of these booms. Bloody fantastic Kurtis.
My heart sank when, on top of the cab, you had to redo the boom too.
That said I can still see this being cheaper and less hassle, you're restoring an already approved machine effectively doing rust repair to a car vs technically making a new one, the engineer signoff debacle on material types alone (much less thickness, geometries and all that ooffyiffie) for every single aspect of it would have been absolutely mind blowing.
It's a much appreciated and rare glimpse into how these cranes are built.
Once again....I feel like I have attended a course in fabrication, design and craftsmanship that I feel like I should have cost me money! Welders and fabricators young and old should acknowledge the education they are getting watching you Kurtis! As well as the truly professional videography and editing by Karen! Awesome job!
