To build up enough temporal momentum for Ben to leap back past his own lifetime to get to Sam. I bet we get Bakula for a short time then he opts to go back because he built a life there.

This is a great scene, but what I liked about this episode is that it spent more time in the past. The problem I had with previous episodes is that the future plots were taking up so much time that the past plots seemed to suffer. Sam used to have to spend time talking to a character, befriending them and getting them to open up, but with Ben, characters just volunteer information, because they don't have time for exposition and character building. I hope this trend continues. One or two scenes in the future are more than enough

Contradicts the original show. Magic lives regardless of Sam being there. The reason why Sam lept in was to change a mission that went wrong and Magic was at the center of it.
Sam's brother Tom was the only one who originally died. But Sam broke the rules and saved Tom's life in addition to the mission. So that got Maggie the photographer killed due to the "life for a life" balance of time travel.

    • @alphanerd7221

Not really. They only say that Magic didn't die on the same day as Sam's brother, not that he didn't die in Vietnam. He may have originally died 3 months later but he didn't because LT. Becket was still alive.
Also, another guy died on April 8th with Lt Becket and I think a couple more were maimed.

At the end of the original, it said Beckett never returned home, so I assumed he kept on leaping with Al (rip Dean Stockwell) with him - is the premise of this that they shut the program down & completely lost him then?, or else I would assume Ziggy & the project would've tracked him as they did every episode?
If there's 'files' on Sams leaps, then it would be kinda cool for them to conclude the 'Evil Leaper' story from the original series, as who they were & where/when they were from was never explained in the show!

I believe Magic is incorrect about him (Magic) being killed in the original history. I would need to check but I believe the main commander died in a helicopter crash (with pilot) on April 7th (that Sam changes), and that Tom Beckett was the only person to die in the main mission on April 8th (aside from the mission failing). Others were wounded / injured, I believe. Al explains this all to Sam right before the first commercial break in the Vietnam episode.

It's the other way around. In the early days it appeared that Sam's soul or consciousness or whatever was what leapt.
However, later on it was made clear out was his body, when leaping into the monkey he could swim although their body composition means they don't float, he leapt into the man who'd lost his legs but was able to stand and freak out the person who saw him because he looked like he was floating, etc

The one with the missing legs, yeah that's impossible for me to argue around. Can't do it outside of the argument of inaccurate narrative weaving in the series as it went along and that's just a bs argument in the end as there's no proof for it.
I still argue its his soul due to the Oswald episode as it specifically references their brainwaves being nearly identical and Sam having Oswalds memories while Oswald has his and is thinking its some Capitalist MKUltra style brainwashing as that makes the most sense though. and something in my head is reminding me that the first Jimmy episode referenced Sam having trouble thinking clearly at times.

I didn't want an ensemble show that spends more time in the present with a cast of Project QL people than on the actual leaps. It felt like any other procedural series with the time travel aspect feeling robbed of its wonder. Like the sci-fi element was just tacked on. I also missed the wit of the original. I'm glad folks are sticking with it and enjoying it, but unless they bring Sam home for Sweeps Week, I'll likely not tune in again. Little things like the original logo's font being interesting and this one being generic. The original leap effect being interesting and this new one being generic.
